Kids with Guns - call for submissions

web site

Call for Submissions 2012

Kids with Guns is looking for new plays and musicals to produce in the 2012 season! We are a collaborative production company who partners with emerging playwrights to create and present new works in New York City.
How do we choose work?

Our curatorial process renews each year with a call for script submissions that we distribute to our own network of artists, along with many NYC-based writers programs. Last year, 80 emerging playwrights submitted excerpts from their unproduced full-length plays. Our literary team reads these excerpts, then in late spring we request full-length scripts from authors whose work resonates with us most.

Throughout the rest of the calendar year, our literary team reads these full submissions and attends workshops and readings around New York City to familiarize ourselves with these new voices. In the 4th quarter of the year, we interview the finalists and select a project for the following season.
What kind of plays or musicals are you looking for?

The answer to this question evolves over time, but we can tell you a few of the deciding factors that made us pick Anna Moench and her play, The Pillow Book for our 2011 season:

The play itself is startlingly different from anything else we read. On the surface it’s a simple story about a modern couple deciding whether or not to have a child. Almost immediately, however, the script’s unusual narrative structure takes you on an adventure that spans time and geography: an Upper West Side Apartment, a hospital waiting room years ago, the Sahara, a mountain in Colorado, and so forth. The characters dutifully maintain their integrity while their life circumstances make epic shifts. And despite its ambitious narrative style, the script is economically written, the characters and their stories have clear arcs, and the story ends as simply and perfectly as it begins.

From a production point of view, we saw opportunities for choreography, a set that creates itself on stage, and a score composed especially for this project. In essence, all opportunities to challenge ourselves and our favorite collaborators to try something completely new.

And finally, we picked Anna’s play as much as we picked her as a playwright with whom we hope to have a long-term relationship. We’ve seen and read her work; we love it; and we have every reason to believe she will enjoy a long and prosperous career in theater.
Let’s get down to brass tacks

Playwrights may only enter one play for consideration for our 2012 season. Format all written materials as PDF documents with 1-inch borders, 12pt font.

Format your files carefully using the following guidelines:

Script/book excerpt

* Must include a title page
* Must be formatted using a 12pt font with 1-inch borders on all 4 sides
* Must include 10 pages or less of script/book/lyrics. So, your document page count will total 11 when including your title page
* We prefer PDF documents, but accept .doc, .docx, and .rtf files as well
* Very important! Name your document using the following format. Note that the marks between words are hyphens, not underscores. (If your document is not a PDF file, please substitute the appropriate extension): Your-Name-Play-Title-10p.pdf

CV/resume/bio

* Must be formatted using a 12pt font with 1-inch borders on all 4 sides
* Must be only 1 page in length
* Again, we prefer PDF documents, but accept .doc, .docx, and .rtf files as well
* Name your file using the following format: Your-Name-cv.pdf

MP3 files (musicals only)

* Must be in .mp3 format
* Must be 6MB or less (Try saving the file at a lower quality setting if it’s too big)
* Name your file using the following format: Your-Name-Name-Of-Song.mp3

Please fill out the form below and click “Submit” by 11:59pm EST Sunday, March 13, 2011.

FAQ:

Q: Do you only produce works by NYC-based writers?
A: So far, yes, but we’re excited to break that pattern!

Q: Can I submit the same play I sent last year?
A: We would definitely prefer to read something new!

Q: How many plays can I submit?
A: Just one.

Q: Any cast size limitations?
A: Nope. We think larger casts are more fun, but we’ve done small casts, too!

Q: Do you do musicals?
A: We want to! If you have a completed musical you’d like to submit for consideration, please upload a 10 page excerpt of book and/or lyrics and an mp3 of a recorded song using the form below

Q: What do you mean by “new” plays/musicals?
A: We’re looking for plays and musicals which have not already enjoyed a full production, though staged readings are okay. Please submit only completed works. Works in progress will not be considered at this time.

Q: What constitutes a full-length play/musical?
A: Gosh. Not less than 60 pages, right?

Q: How do make sure I’m the first to know about Kids with Guns goings-on in the future?
A: That’s easy! Join our mailing list, friend us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter

ABINGDON’S SANCTUARY PLAYS BENEFIT CHALLENGE

Sanctuary noun
(1) a place of refuge and protection
(2) a shelter from danger or hardship
(3) a place of safety

Dear Playwright,

You are invited to submit an original 10-minute play to Abingdon Theatre Company’s THE SANCTUARY PLAYS Benefit Challenge. This effort engages artists who support a theatre dedicated to new plays.

Our Sanctuary Series is an opportunity to challenge your creativity and write a short play that features at least one character who is seeking sanctuary, providing sanctuary, or their sanctuary is being threatened. We STRONGLY encourage original play submissions that are developed for this presentation.

Using your skills and imagination, write an original play that will be presented as a staged reading on the set of Abingdon’s next production, SUMMER IN SANCTUARY, by Al Letson and directed by Rob Urbinati. We are seeking 10-minute plays, preferably on a socially relevant theme, written in any style that reveal a fresh plot, sufficient conflict and a running time of 10 minutes, maximum. SERIES A performs on Tuesday, April 5, and SERIES B performs on April 12. Are you ready? Here are the guidelines. Please read carefully!

GENERAL GUIDELINES:
1. Abingdon presents the play. We provide the actors, directors, stage manager and the theatre (the 55-seat Dorothy Strelsin Theatre at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex, 312 W. 36th Street, NYC).
2. This is a fundraiser to support Abingdon’s New Play Development Program. All participants are donating their time and talent, and are helping recruit an audience. The suggested donation is $10. Our goal is to fill every seat in the house!
3. Each playwright and director will be able to attend the staged reading of their script in designated seating.
4. Every play gets two performances.

SCRIPT GUIDELINES:
1. Your play must adhere to the theme of seeking, providing or losing sanctuary.
2. Your play can be set anywhere. Available set pieces include rehearsal cubes, chairs and a table.
3. Write for a cast of 2-3 actors (any age, race, ethnicity, or gender).
4. We prefer scripts that can be staged without relying on stage directions. If stage directions are necessary, please keep them to a minimum.
5. Your script will be presented as a staged reading in accordance with AEA guidelines. Keep production values to a minimum. Costumes are at the discretion of the director and the willing cooperation of the actors. No hand props can be used.
6. Plays should be in standard script format: 12 point font, 1” margins on all sides, and character names on a separate line. On your title page, please include your contact information (phone, email and address). Be sure to number all pages.
7. Submit scripts in MS-Word - preferred - or PDF format.
8. Scripts longer than 10 pages – title and character breakdown pages are not counted – will NOT be considered. Regardless of the number of pages, the running time MUST be no more than 10 minutes!
9. You may only submit one script for consideration.
10. Playwrights must attend the staged reading. Please specify your availability for SERIES A (4/5), and/or SERIES B (4/12). If you are available for either slot, let us know that, too!
11. The deadline for script submission is midnight, March 11. Up to 12 scripts will be chosen.

HOW TO SUBMIT:
1. Email your scripts to Bara Swain at BCSwain4@aol.com.
2. Write in the subject line: SANCTUARY PLAY SUBMISSION / Your Name
3. In the body of the email, send your complete contact information and a one-line summary of your play.
4. You will be contacted regarding your script’s status in mid-March or when the 10-minute slots have been filled. (Submissions are selected on a rolling basis.)

Please make sure you meet all script and submission requirements. If anything is omitted, your submission will be returned to you for one last opportunity to meet those requirements.

If you have any questions, contact Bara Swain or Kim T. Sharp, Co-Producers. For more information on Abingdon Theatre Company, see our website at www.abingdontheatre.org. We look forward to hearing from you!

Deadline approaches: Share your excellent play - Due 2/15/2011

Have you written a great 10-minute play? Let NYCPlaywrights tell the world why it's so great.

In 2010, NYCPlaywrights posted an article "How do you write a good 10-minute play?"

http://nycplaywrights.org/10min/

The article presented an analysis of three 10-minute plays written by NYCPlaywrights members, along with the plays themselves.

Although the plays are very different from each other (a comedy, a horror tale, and a romance) each demonstrated qualities of a good 10-minute play.

NYCPlaywrights will post another article very much like "How do you write a good 10-minute play?" featuring three more excellent plays, on March 27, 2011. The worldwide theatre lovers who visit the NYCPlaywrights web site will get to read and appreciate these three 10-minute plays - your play could be one of them.

The Rules:

1. Send only one ten minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org.

2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or .pdf.

3. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:

http://nycp.blogspot.com/p/playscript-formatting-template.html

Plays that are not in standard format will be rejected immediately.

4. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

5. Deadline: February 15, 2011

6. The three selected plays will be announced March 12, 2011.

7. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

8. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

You are strongly advised to read the article "How do you write a good 10-minute play?" before sending work. This article is an excellent guideline for the kind of work we are looking for:
