April 2012 Play of the Month

10-Minute Play of the Month: APRIL 2012

There is no theme - it could be about anything - BUT the play must pass the Bechdel Test.

THE BECHDEL TEST
  1. It has to have at least two women in it,
  2. Who talk to each other,
  3. About something other than a man. (Not limited to romantic relationships, for example two sisters talking about their father doesn't pass)
PLEASE NOTE: it doesn't violate the Bechdel test if the women talk about a man - it's just that they have to talk about something besides a man at some point. Also there can be more than two characters in your play and some can be men - but there has to be at least two women who talk about something besides a man. Video explanation of the Bechdel test.

The Bechdel Test movie list.

The deadline is Sunday, April 8th at 11:59 PM.

1. Send only one ten-minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org

2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or pdf. Most preferable is .pdf (Portable Document Format) because it will retain your original script formatting.

3. The script can be no longer than 10 pages (not including title page, setting info page, etc. - pages will be counted only from where the actual on-stage directions and dialog begin.)

4. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:

http://nycp.blogspot.com/p/playscript-formatting-template.html

Plays that are not in standard format, or that have more than 10 pages (not counting title page, etc.) will be rejected immediately.

5. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

6. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

7. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

8. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.

9. The play must have been written by the person making the submission.

10. The play can have had a previous production but cannot have been published.

11. All rights will remain with the playwright.

12. The selected play will be videotaped and posted during the month of April or early May.

13. The video recording of the play reading will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The embedded section may be an excerpt of the play reading rather than the entire reading. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording and approve it before it is made public.

14. The play must pass the Bechdel test.

15. The readings that are recorded are actual script-in-hand readings, not productions - although there may be some video production work, such as multi-camera views, music, titles; or minor stage work such as hand props or actor movements. To get an idea of what to expect for the video recording see the page on the NYCPlaywrights web site with samples of past readings of Plays of the Month: http://nycp.blogspot.com/p/play-of-month.html

Anne DeSalvo's Mamma Roma is about the earthy and unkempt Italian actress Anna Magnani. Magnani radiated with a fierce intelligence, uniqueness and sensuality, but lacked the bombshell good looks of her contemporaries like Bridget Bardot, Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida. She rocketed to international celebrity with Roberto Rossellini’s OPEN CITY and came to epitomize Italy’s Neo Realism movement and transcended it with an exceptional rawness, depth and honesty.

NYCPlaywrights February 2012 Play of the Month: BEAUTIFUL BOY by Joseph Jude Zito

The February 2012 Play of the Month is BEAUTIFUL BOY by Joseph Jude Zito, performed by Valerie David and Michael Indeglio. Thanks for your wonderful work and for sharing your talent. And special thanks to the actors for waking up early on a Sunday morning to record this on the subway.

Joseph discusses the play:
This play was produced in 2007 as part of Sundog's Staten Island Ferry series. The play setting has changed from in a park, on a ferry, on a subway..., etc., but the setting isn't important. The necessary set-up is that the mother gets ten minutes to be with her boy, that's it.

It is a companion piece to THIS SIDE OF BABYLON, which is my updated adaptation of Fitzgerald's short story, "Babylon revisited."

I think because I come from a family of divorce (parents split up when I was ten), the idea of an estranged parent trying to reunite with his/her child resonated with me - especially since, I was not allowed to see my father until I was an adult, so there was an 11-year gap there. Both plays explore the possibility or hope of "happy reunion" with potential for reconnecting permanently, followed by the reality of, "it's not gonna happen." Hmmm. Ok, writing is therapy! :-)

5th annual Living Room Tour commissions

web site

NOTE: deadline is March 23, 2012

cARTel: Collaborative Arts LA is proud to announce its 5th annual Living Room Tour - a Los Angeles tradition that allows audiences to get closer to theater than anywhere else - and we are looking for a playwright.

Every year we commission an emerging playwright to write us a new play that takes place in a living room. We then workshop it over a few weeks through public and private readings, and come fall we tour it through a dozen Southern California living rooms of all shapes and sizes. Every home receives a reception and an after party, since every show is opening and closing night at a new venue! It's a fantastic way for us to really be a part of several different communities in a way that is both intimate and grand at the same time. The chosen playwright will receive $200 at the end of the tour, as well as countless new connections with artists and audience members across SoCal.

Last year's Living Room Tour, Amongst the Trees sold out its entire engagement and was hailed as "intimate, pioneering, conceptually brilliant" and "one of the best productions we've seen this year" by LAist. We're going to make this year's even better and we want your words to be the star.

To submit, e-mail us at cartelsubmissions@gmail.com. Please include a writing sample and tell us in a few sentences what draws you to this project. Submissions end on 3/23, and our new playwright will be announced by early April.

Previous playwrights have loved to be a part of the Living Room Tour. Last year's featured playwright, Lauren Smerkanich, had this to say:

"The Living Room Tour forces the writer to tell the truth. Without the crutch of a set, or scene changes, or even a theater, you're free to focus on what really matters - a strong plot, and well-defined, three dimensional characters who really need something from one another. It's simple story-telling that can happen anywhere, which, as a writer, is incredibly exciting to be a part of."

Let's share your brilliant, beautiful words with the world.

Sincerely,
Negin Singh
Artistic Director

Currently seeking play submissions from high school, college and university students

web site

About the Festival

Students are invited to submit completed one-act plays for consideration in Horizon Theatre Company’s New South Young Playwrights' Festival Contest. The contest has two divisions: High School (grades 9 – 12); and College (Full or part-time college students enrolled in academic year 2010 – 2011, under 25 years old). 20 – 30 playwrights will be selected to participate in the New South Young Playwrights' Festival at Horizon Theatre Company in the Little Five Points area of Atlanta. This week-long festival will include playwriting workshops, seminars, and rehearsals with professional theatre actors, directors, and playwrights. Submitting playwrights must be available to come to Atlanta from May 28 through June 2. We are currently taking submissions through April 1, 2012.

The Festival

The week of the Festival consists of four days of residency, and the final day culminates in a performance of their work written during the week. Each playwright will be assigned a dramaturg whom they will be working with during the Festival.

Young playwrights will meet like-minded peers and colleagues, and participate in seminars aimed at their professional development. Past seminar leaders include dramaturgs, playwrights, college professors, literary directors, and artistic associates. Each playwright will have a portion of their submitted work read by professional actors living and working in Atlanta, and will have the ability to receive feedback from their peers and colleagues. Each evening there is a group excursion, often to see a performance in the Atlanta area. The last day of the Festival is a Short Play Festival, where the playwrights five-minute plays written during the week are performed by professional actors for family and friends.

The Festival is free for all participants; those selected from out-of-state will receive a travel stipend and housing. Lunch and dinner are provided for all playwrights, and the evening activities are donated to the Festival.

Seeking Submissions for 2012 GPS (Gay Play Series)

Seeking Submissions for 2012 GPS (Gay Play Series)

The Ringwald Theatre is sounding a call for new, original one-act plays to be performed at their 3rd annual Gay Play Series (GPS). The Detroit-area’s only GLBT short play festival is striving to provide early-career writers the opportunity to see their work produced, giving them what is oft-needed exposure.

Last year’s expanded festival proved to be wildly successful, with Jason Sebacher’s play, A Few Survivors, winning the top prize. The 2011 Festival also saw more prizes handed out with Christa Coulter winning the Audience Award for Favorite Performance and Matthew Turner Shelton winning the Audience Award for Best Director, both for Rich Orloff’s play Vowed and Wowed. Artistic Director Joe Bailey says, “The GPS Festivals have continually exceeded our expectations and we have no doubt that the 3rd annual one will be no different. We are incredibly excited to get to planning the 2012 festivities.”

The plays submitted should have a performance time of 30 minutes or less and deal directly with issues or characters that are identified as gay/lesbian/transgender, or contain a gay sensibility. From the initial submission pool, a final line up will be chosen by a panel of judges to be performed at The Ringwald Theatre in June, 2012. From those performed, an audience poll will be conducted to select one script that will receive a full production at The Ringwald Theatre during the 2012/2013 season.

All submissions must be submitted electronically to: submissions@theringwald.com

  •  The submitted script must be the script proposed for presentation, with no major alterations    necessary.
  •  Please provide an approximate running time and a one sentence synopsis in the body of the email.
  •  Neither fax nor paper submissions will be accepted.
  •  Submission materials will not be returned.
  •  Previously submitted scripts will not be eligible.
  •  The deadline for submissions is March 16, 2012.
  •  The final line-up will be announced in May, 2012.

Towne Street Theatre announces winners of the 5th Annual Ten-Minute Play Festival

Short plays wanted for MITF

(no web site available)

NOTE: no submission fee, $100 participation fee

Dear friend in the theatre,

I just finished producing a very successful and varied Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival in Times Square. It's time to think seriously about the summer equivalent, the Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF)'s Short Subjects, now in its fourth season. (The MITF itself is enjoying its 13th season.)

The MITF Short Subjects are a repertory of plays running from 30 - 60 min. performed in their own intimate venue, with lower participation fees and ticket prices than other plays in the MITF. The Short Subjects is an excellent opportunity to test new theatrical ideas in a less demanding environment than full-length plays in larger venues.
The following facts and rules set the Short Subjects apart from the rest of the MITF:
  • We do not accept Short Subjects from outside the tri-state area. If your play is from outside the tri-state area and can be coaxed to run an hour or more, please consider the "regular" MITF.
  •  Every play gets 3 performance slots in the WorkShop Theater's 30-seat Jewel Box theater. We attempt to honor requests for slots ("third week only, please!") but our scheduling decisions are final. Performance dates are July 16 - Aug. 5, 2012, 6 - 10 pm weekdays and noon - 10 pm weekends.
  • All plays must be 30 - 60 min. long. Scripts must be in standard playscript format, in Word or PDF, E-mailed to us*.
  • There is no application fee.
  • The participation fee is only $100, payable on acceptance of the script by the MITF, by check or PayPal**.
  • There is a simple one-page agreement, sent on acceptance of the script and payment of the participation fee.
  • Deadline is June 1, 2012.
  • The production is responsible for producing the play, including finding actors, director, board op, props, costumes, rehearsals, etc; the MITF provides the theatre and some shared scenery (cubes, table, chairs).
  • You may not produce your show as an Equity showcase, and Equity is not issuing waivers for this program. All shows must be non-union.
  • Production values must be kept to a minimum: costumes and hand props only. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table.
  • We provide box office services and venue management.
  • The MITF keeps 100% of the door.
  • Tickets are $17 for shows running 45 - 60 min., and $14 for shows running 30 - 45 min. Each playwright and director gets 1 comp to each of their performances. Comps are non-transferable. There are press comps but no industry comps.  The production must purchase any additional seats they wish to comp.
  • Your show will be allotted a tech rehearsal running at least 2 hours, during the hours of 10 - 5:30 weekdays during the Festival (July 16 - Aug. 3).
  • We don't do staged readings; productions must be off-book. Plays not off-book during tech rehearsal will be removed from the line-up.
  • While you may submit a program of related short plays totaling 30 - 60 min., the MITF will not "marry" two or more unrelated short plays into one program.

*Standard playscript format for us is 12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions. E-mail all scripts (no snail-mail please!) to john.chatterton@gmail.com.

**Please add 3% for PayPal handling fees. Make PayPal payments to john.chatterton@gmail.com. Send all paper checks to: John Chatterton, 2578 Broadway #145, New York, NY 10025. Paper checks should be made out to MITF.

Thanks,
John Chatterton
MITF executive producer

Director/Producer Carl Forsman (Keen Company) on selecting plays for production

A pal wrote and asked if I’d talk about how I pick the season. It’s a very, very complicated question to answer.  It is by far the most important part of my job, something I take very seriously. It is both a creative and business endeavor, one I collaborate on in some ways,  but also do very much alone. I have picked some shows very slowly, and some quickly. Shows I have rejected in one year, and have gone on to do in another. We have done big and small, old and new, plays everyone knows and obscure gems. So there isn’t one answer, of course. Each play has its own story of how it comes to the top of my pile.

The simple, quick answer is: we do plays that are within our mission. Plays that champion decency and kindness, plays that speak to our ability to connect. Nothing that is outside our mission gets seriously considered, although there are plays outside our mission that I admire greatly (I love Agatha Christie, but she’s not very Keen). But literally thousands of plays are still on that list. How do I choose from there?

Orange Hanky Productions is accepting submissions of original gay plays

web site

 (no deadline specified)

Orange Hanky Productions is accepting submissions of original gay plays for future reading series and productions.

Orange Hanky’s mission is to produce original plays which raise the bar on gay theater, tackling the issues facing gay people in a truthful, raw and fresh way. OHP seeks out plays which break new ground in the representation of gay characters, plays in which simply being gay is not in and of itself the conflict. Orange Hanky’s productions present situations which are uniquely gay but are motivated by needs and fears which resonate with everyone, regardless of sexuality.

Put more simply, none of the main conflicts in the play should be about any characters dealing with, or coming to terms with, their sexuality or gender identity.

Submitted plays should be between one and two hours in length, and must contain significant LGBT content. Plays may have had prior readings and workshops, but must never have had a production in New York.

To apply, please email to orangehanky@gmail.com your script and a cover letter, including your contact information, the title of the play, a brief (no more than one paragraph) synopsis, and (if applicable) the play’s previous reading, workshop and non-NY production history.

Please attach your script to your email as a .pdf, MS Word, or plain text document. We will not accept submissions in other formats, nor will we accept hard copies.
