I was reading things about Walt Disney and I was always interested in the Occupy Wall Street movement, and then I happened to come across Mary Poppins online and the "Step in Time" part made me think of a union rally, which is pretty funny because Disney hated unions. Firehouse Theatre Project 11th Annual Festival of New American Plays Rules for Submission

In keeping with the Firehouse Theatre’s mission of promoting new work by American artists, the Festival of New American Plays began in 2002 as a way to encourage and incubate new plays by established and emerging playwrights in the USA. It has become a grass-roots event with substantial involvement from the community, as hundreds of scripts submitted to the Playwriting Contest from all over the country are read by volunteer readers from the Greater-Richmond area. Each script is read twice (more if it needs a tiebreaker), and scripts with “two thumbs up” are passed on for further evaluation to an expert panel of judges, who then pick two finalists for a four-night Festival “showdown.” Members of the festival audience who have seen staged readings of both finalists’ work cast a vote for their favorite play, and the winner of the festival is chosen by the public. Festival winners receive cash prizes.

Submission Guidelines
  • Full length scripts only.
  • Plays must not have been previously produced. Readings are acceptable if no
    admission was charged and actors read from the script.
  • Submissions should be made in standard manuscript form and with no fancy binding. This means no discs, no e-mails. Please just use a binder clip to secure the script pages, no folders, no plastic covers, etc. All author information must be on a title page separate from the body of the manuscript and no reference to the author is permitted in the body of the script.
  • Scripts must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a theater company or individual familiar with your work. Letters of recommendation do not need to be specific to the play submitted; they may be general recommendations of the playwrights work. All letters must be received with the script, not under separate cover. Scripts received without a letter will not be considered.
  • Entries must be postmarked no later than June 30, 2012 but no earlier than January 1, 2012.
  • Due to volume of mail, manuscripts cannot be returned.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Though we are up for anything, ideally, scripts should be long one-acts (70-90 minutes) or two-act plays (100-120 minutes). If you have something else longer, please feel free to send it on.

You may submit multiple scripts.

Script submissions WILL NOT be returned to the applicant; MadLab will destroy all evidence of your creative instincts upon a funeral pyre at an undisclosed location in order to protect both the innocent and the guilty.  Ashes will NOT be returned to you unless you purchase a commemorative urn from MadLab at the bargain basement price of $999.95.

Due to our environmentally conscious president, you must email your script to us.  If emailing is absolutely impossible for you, please call us at 614.221.5418 so we can make alternate arrangements.

Please send your script attached as a Microsoft Word (2000 or older) document or PDF format.  Scripts should be emailed to andy@madlab.net.  Please put “MADLAB 2012 SEASON”  in the subject line.  If “MADLAB 2012 SEASON” is not in your subject line, your submission may not be received.  All submissions will receive a reply email to ensure that your submission was received.

MadLab pays a royalty of $200 + 10% of our box office for any playwright that is gracious enough to allow us to produce his/her work.  We know this will not be anywhere near worth the time and effort you put into writing your play, but we are happy that every little bit helps.

Seeking Script Submissions/Directors for “Better or Worse”

Freshwater Theatre is issuing a call for original scripts and directors for our upcoming fall production, Better or Worse, which will run September 8-22 at Nimbus Theatre in Minneapolis. It will subsequently be non-exclusively published in an anthology.

Our intention with Better or Worse is to examine the ways in which the institution of marriage has shifted and changed, culturally and interpersonally, to suit the needs of the people in the time in which they lived. From a mere financial merger of family wealth, to the peasant partnership model, through the rise of romantically-motivated unions, through interracial marriages to same-sex marriages and beyond, we will put marriage under the microscope to see how it has evolved over the centuries.

Any time period is fair game, as long as the subject matter has influenced the marriage debate in Minnesota or is practiced by Minnesotans daily. We would love to see submissions that speak to personal experiences, family cultures, and the experience of being a minority in Minnesota.

Writers, musicians and performance artists of all types are encouraged to send submissions (PDF preferred) or proposals to submissions@freshwatertheatre.com by June 4, 2012. 

We will consider pieces up to 25 minutes in length.

AstonRep will be holding the 4th Annual Writer's Series on June 9th which is a one-day festival of staged readings and talk-back sessions.

Shelterbelt Theatre announces its call for scripts for their annual Halloween-themed anthology, Shelterskelter (our tales of horror, suspense, the macabre, and bizarre.)

DETAILS

Deadline for script submission for 2012 is June 1. 

We are looking for NEW scripts for our regular Shelterskelter show. We are also looking for new scripts for a possible "adults only" late night show which would follow the regular show. This is a chance to push some boundaries and experiment with more mature content. In general, scripts for Shelterskelter should be 30 minutes or less in length. Indicate you are submitting for Shelterskelter in the subject line of your email.

Please indicate that your submission is for Shelterskelter in the subject line of your email, and/or on your cover or title page.

Shelterskelter runs in October, featuring short plays dealing with horror, suspense, dark humor, and the macabre. This is not a "Halloween" show, but rather a chance for playwrights to experiment with some darker subject matter, and with suspense. We also look at shorter plays for possible inclusion in one of our other season time slots, so if you have a script that doesn't fit neatly into any specific category, send it to us! Good scripts are always given a lot of attention.

Submission of script(s) does not mean that we will give you an immediate response. If you do not hear from us right away, it just means that we are very, very busy. Playwrights Are Asked to Write about “Soul Food”

GUIDELINES FOR PLAY SUBMISSION

• We are soliciting new, original monologues between two and ten minutes long. Since the festival will include ten to twelve monologues, it is important that each one require as little production as possible; set-pieces, props, or effects needing set-up, strike, or special technical support may disqualify an otherwise excellent submission.

• The plays should be inspired by the theme: “Soul Food.”

• Scripts should be a maximum of eight pages long, double-spaced, using a standard format (twelve point font), and be written for a single actor to perform. (Please read it aloud and include the approximate performance time on the first page of your submission; all lengths of up to ten minutes will be considered, with the objective of choosing monologues of varying lengths).

• We do not accept musical submissions, adaptations, or children’s plays.

• Keep in mind that you are writing for the stage – pieces must have dynamic, dramatic structure

• Each playwright may submit up to two scripts with no fee. For each additional script, there is a $5 reading fee, payable by check to Forward Theater Company. Checks may be sent to Forward Theater Company, PO Box 14574, Madison, WI  53708.

• We are looking to mount premiere productions of submitted monologues. If the piece has previously received a fully-realized production, please do NOT submit. Monologues that have been given public readings are allowed.

• Each manuscript must include an additional title page with name, address, phone number and e-mail address. Please do not list your name anywhere on the monologue itself.

• You may submit via e-mail ONLY to grice@forwardtheater.com. Please use the subject line “monologue festival.”  E-Submissions will be accepted until midnight (central time) on July 1, 2012.

• Entries will be acknowledged by e-mail once they have been received. Due to the volume of scripts we are unable to offer criticism or return any submissions.

• The winning scripts will be announced on our website (forwardtheater.com), on or before October 1, 2012.

• Writers will be credited in all marketing and playbill materials; no royalties will be paid for performance. Monologues will be individually rehearsed and coached by the director until the week of the performance when the entire company will rehearse at the Overture Center. Playwrights are entitled to two complimentary tickets to the opening performance; tickets are not transferable.

Madison, WI - Forward Theater Company is asking authors to wax poetic about food – anything from making chocolate cookies for the first time, to unearthing a coveted secret family recipe, to a dinner party gone terribly wrong. Playwrights from across the country are invited to contribute to the company’s second monologue festival, “Soul Food,” which will be presented on November 9-11 at Overture Center.  With original work by both established and up-and-coming playwrights, Forward will be assembling an engaging evening of comedy and drama that examines our relationships with comfort food, fast food, ethnic specialties, fine dining, and everything in between.

Artistic Director Jennifer Uphoff Gray commented, “When Forward was established, one of the things we wanted to do was promote the development of new plays.  This is a great way to work one-on-one with a wide variety of playwrights and get to know their writing styles.”

This event follows up Forward’s first monologue festival, which focused on monologues on the theme “The Love That Changed My Life,” and featured new work from Wisconsin writers, emerging playwrights from across the country, and more established playwrights such as Christopher Durang, Beth Henley, and Connie Congdon. Communications Director Gwen Rice explained, “The festival in 2010 was a huge success, both artistically and at the box office – we added performances and sold out every show. We’re very excited to challenge writers, directors, and actors with a new batch of plays themed around food experiences and obsessions.”

2012 FRED EBB AWARD GUIDELINES

Each applicant must be a composer/lyricist or composer/lyricist team wishing to create work for the musical theatre, and must not yet have achieved significant commercial success.

Application Materials:
1. A CD of up to four songs from one or more musical theatre pieces, with typewritten lyrics and a description of the dramatic context for each song; and

2. A completed application form.
  • We will code the applications as they arrive. Because all submissions will be reviewed blind, please do not place name(s) of writer(s) on the CD, lyric sheets, or description of dramatic context.
  • Only musical theatre work will be considered.
  • The applicant(s) must have written all the songs included in the submission. For example, a composer cannot submit one song with her own lyrics, and a second song with lyrics by another writer.
  • No individual may appear on more than one application. You cannot apply as an individual and again as part of a team, or as part of more than one songwriting team.
  • Submission Deadline and Award:
  • Applications will be accepted from June 1-30, 2012. Please mail or deliver applications to Fred Ebb Award, Roundabout Theatre, 231 West 39th Street, Suite 1200, New York, New York 10018. Potluck Productions is always looking for original scripts from women playwrights for inclusion in upcoming festivals. If you are interested in submitting a script for consideration, the following information will explain what we are looking for and how to make a submission.
How to Enter

·         Please mail two (2) paper copies of your script, a show synopsis, resume, and cover letter to the address noted below. At this time, only snail mail submissions will be accepted. Electronic submissions are not allowed.

Send email only as text within the body of your message. Do not send attachments of any kind. If we want to read the full script, we will request it.

We do read all material, and that entails a substantial response time, generally 3 - 8 months . Every script considered for production will be publicly read as part of our PlayPen Series.

We produce a variety of styles but we do not do musicals due to space limitations. Drama, comedies, farce, political - all are fine to submit. Keep in mind our production restrictions: our playing area is 16' x 12'; no wing or fly space; cast size should not exceed 10 (without doubling).

We operate under the 99 Seat Plan of Actors Equity Association, which provides for token payment of actors and stage managers. Writers are paid a percentage of the box office. Performers are not paid for student workshops or showcases.

MITF seeks short plays

The MITF Short Subjects are a repertory of plays running from 30 - 60 min. performed in the same intimate venues as the rest of the Festival, with lower participation fees and ticket prices than other plays in the MITF. The Short Subjects are an excellent opportunity to test new theatrical ideas in a supportive environment.

The following facts and rules set the Short Subjects apart from the rest of the MITF:
We do not accept Short Subjects from outside the tri-state area. If your play is from outside the tri-state area and can be coaxed to run an hour or more, please consider the "regular" MITF.

Every play gets 3 performance slots in the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex. We attempt to honor requests for slots ("third week only, please!") but our scheduling decisions are final. Performance dates are July 16 - Aug. 5, 2012, 6 - 10 pm weekdays and noon - 10 pm weekends.
All plays must be 30 - 60 min. long. Scripts must be in standard playscript format, in Word or PDF, E-mailed to us*.

There is no application fee. 

The participation fee is only $100, payable on acceptance of the script by the MITF, by check or PayPal**.

There is a simple one-page agreement, sent on acceptance of the script and payment of the participation fee.

Deadline is June 1, 2012.

The production is responsible for producing the play, including finding actors, director, board op, props, costumes, rehearsals, etc; the MITF provides the theatre and some shared scenery (cubes, table, chairs).

You may not produce your show as an Equity showcase, and Equity is not issuing waivers for this program. All shows must be non-union.

Production values must be kept to a minimum: costumes and hand props only. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table.

We provide box-office services and venue management.

The MITF keeps that share of the door representing 40% of a full house, in aggregate over your show's run. We split anything over that with you 50-50.

Tickets are $17 for shows running 45 - 60 min., and $14 for shows running 30 - 45 min. Each playwright and director gets 1 comp to each of their performances. Comps are non-transferable. There are press comps but no industry comps.  The production must purchase any additional seats they wish to comp.

Your show will be allotted a tech rehearsal running at least 2 hours, during the hours of 10 - 5:30 weekdays during the Festival (July 16 - Aug. 3).

We don't do staged readings; productions must be off-book. Plays not off-book during tech rehearsal will be removed from the line-up.

While you may submit a program of related short plays totaling 30 - 60 min., the MITF will not "marry" two or more unrelated short plays into one program.

*Standard playscript format for us is 12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions. E-mail all scripts (no snail-mail please!) to john.chatterton@gmail.com.

Undiscovered Voices Scholarship

Call For Applications for the 2013 Undiscovered Voices Scholarship will officially open Sunday, January 1, 2012. The Writer’s Center seeks promising writers earning less than $25,000 annually to apply. This scholarship program will provide complimentary writing workshops to the selected applicant for a period of one year, but not to exceed 8 workshops in that year (and not to include independent studies). We expect the recipient will use the year to make progress toward a completed manuscript of publishable work. Previous winners include Gimbiya Kettering (2012),  Lee Kaplan (2011), and Susan Bucci Mockler (2010).

The Writer’s Center believes writers of all backgrounds and experiences should have an opportunity to devote time and energy toward the perfection of their craft.

The recipient will be able to attend writing workshops offered by The Writer’s Center free of charge. In addition, he or she will give a reading from his or her work at the close of the scholarship period (June 2013) and will be invited to speak with local high school students on the craft of writing.

To apply, candidates should submit
a)  a cover letter signed by the candidate that contains the statement: “I understand and confirm I meet all eligibility requirements of the Undiscovered Voices Scholarship.” The cover letter should include information on the impact this scholarship would have on the candidate.

b) contact information for two references who can speak to the candidate’s creative work and promise

c) a work sample in a single genre:

    Eight pages of poetry, no more than one poem per page
    10 pages of fiction, double-spaced, no more than one work or excerpt

2013 Newborn Festival

The National NewBorn Festival is our flagship program, created to find talented emerging playwrights from across the US, introduce their work to the New York community, and open new doors to regional voices.

DETAILS

Submitted plays and musicals must meet the following criteria:
  •     The world of the play/musical must take place in a region outside of New York City.
  •     The play/musical must not have had a prior production in NYC.
  •     MTWorks strongly encourages writers living in any region of the United States to apply.
 The winning playwrights will be awarded:

    An initial unrehearsed private cold read of the play with company members and other artistic staff [Finalists also receive this reading]. This part of the process is what we call the Living Room Series.
    One full reading of their work in a festival environment.
    Assigned professional director / musical director and cast to work on their play.
    “Playwright Spotlight” Newsletter received by over 3,000 members of the NY Theatre Industry.

REQUIREMENTS:

We are only interested in full-length plays and full-length musicals at the moment (at least 90min in length).

  • A half (1/2) page synopsis.
  • If you are submitting a musical also include one mp3 that best represents your score.

CREATOrS, Inc. announces Accepting Inquiries for Script Commission

CREATOrS, Inc. is accepting inquiries for a playwriting commission.  The project will be collaborative with a composer to create script and lyrics for a full-length musical drama based on the true African story of Malawi, and a courageous leader who helped to organize the rejection of that country’s brutal dictator in the early 1990s.  The final project will include scoring for symphony orchestra, singers, dancers, and multimedia. Project details, story profile, a brief documentary and composer background are available at www.creatorsinc.org.

African-born writers are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant would:
  • receive a commission for the project
  • collaborate with the composer

GUIDELINES FOR THE 2012 MET LIFE NUESTRAS VOCES NATIONAL PLAYWRITING COMPETITION

+MISSION:
In 2000 MetLife Foundation and Repertorio Español joined forces to establish The MetLife Nuestras Voces National Playwriting Competition in the hopes of discovering new American plays by established and emerging Latino playwrights writing about the many themes and topics relevant to the Hispanic communities across the United States—plays that may be under the radar in other venues. It has been our privilege to promote and develop new plays and to encourage bright new talent to continue writing plays by providing this forum.

+REQUIREMENTS:
*PLEASE READ CAREFULLY*
PLAYS THAT DO NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS WILL NOT BE READ.

-Playwrights may be Latino or of any other ethnic or racial background as long as the play’s subject matter and characters resonate with Latino audiences and accurately depict the Hispanic experience.

-No screenplays, one act plays, musicals, adaptations or translations will be accepted.
-New and un-produced plays preferred. Plays that have had readings or a workshop production are acceptable.
-All plays must be original and full-length (minimum running time: 1 hr., 30 min) and can be written in Spanish and/or English.
-Playwrights must be at least 18 years of age and residents of the United States or Puerto Rico.
-Previously submitted scripts are accepted unless they have already placed in the top 10.

+SELECTION PROCESS:
-Each script will be read by two qualified independent judges selected by Repertorio Español, on a blind submission.
-Winners will be announced six to seven months after the deadline.
-Each participant will be notified of the results by e-mail. We request that participants do not contact the office to inquire about the competition’s results.

+PRIZES:
Round 1:
Finalists will receive a staged reading at Repertorio to further develop the script.

Round 2:
-Grand Prize Winner: $3,000 and a full production at Repertorio Español
-2nd Place: $2,000

Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab

The Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab was founded in 1998 to explore and develop the work of a new generation of theater artists and to foster new collaborations between writers and directors in the beginning stages of the creative process. Writers and directors must apply separately. At the start of the cycle, each writer and director invited to join the Lab are matched with one another.
Writer applicants should please submit a resume and a dramatic writing sample, preferably a full-length play. This play should not be the play you wish to work on in the Lab, as Lab writers will work on brand new play. In the late summer, writer finalists will be asked to interview and also to propose an idea for a new play.

Director applicants should please submit a resume, as well as written responses to the following two questions (Each response should be limited to 250 words): 1. Tell us about your current artistic obsession (to clarify, we’d like to hear about an obsession related to the making of your own work, rather than another artist’s work). 2. Tell us about your worst experience directing a play. In the late summer, director finalists will be asked in for an interview and also to provide some form of visual representation of their work.

Participation includes attendance at all Lab meetings and readings during the 2012/13 cycle. The Lab meets approximately every other week in the fall and winter to discuss the plays. In the spring, each play is given a public reading at Soho Rep, directed by the director matched with the play. There is typically one reading per week for five or six consecutive weeks.

Eligibility Writers and directors must be able to attend all Lab meetings and readings at Soho Rep in New York City during the 2012/13 cycle. They may not be full-time students at the start of the Lab in October 2012. Past participants of the Lab are eligible to apply, but Soho Rep has a policy of favoring new applicants. (While we value some degree of continuity, we wish to place emphasis on providing this opportunity for new members and expanding the circle of artists who might profit from this program.)

Applications must be submitted electronically to us by 5pm EST on May 14, 2012, and you should expect to receive a response from us no later than September 14, 2012. *What? 10-minute or 15-minute plays (15 page maximum)

*One script only. It must be a comedy.

*Playwrights can be from anywhere but plays must be in English.

*Standard play format preferred.

*There are no restrictions on content but our audiences prefer more family-friendly fare.

The Chameleon Theatre Circle's 13th Annual New Play Contest

The Chameleon Theatre Circle located in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, is seeking original works that have never been produced. All styles and genres are welcomed (i.e. one-acts, musicals, full length dramas, etc.). The winning plays will be showcased in a concert-format festival in September 2012. All shows submitted will automatically be placed on the slate of shows in consideration for the 2013/2014 season by the Season Planning Committee.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
We are proud to announce that for the 13th consecutive year we are not charging a submission fee! To enter you must complete an entry form (available on the web site) and submit it along with three (3) copies of each script to the address below. If you are submitting a musical, also include 3 copies of a CD of the music or 3 copies of the score. Do not bind any author identification with your scripts. We will distribute the scripts "blind" to our readers for complete objectivity. Include the show's title on at least the first bound page. Once the winning scripts have been chosen, we will disclose the playwrights' identity to our readers (and the world).

We do not accept plays that have been previously produced. We do accept plays that have had workshops and other readings. Receipt of play(s) will be acknowledged by e-mail only upon request. Scripts are non-returnable.

As in past years, this year's contest will have multiple categories:

TEN-MINUTE PLAYS
Three to five winners will receive $25 each plus a reading at the New Play Festival. All short plays will be entered in this contest. Generally, scripts of about 15 pages or less will fall into this category.

ONE-ACT
One to three winners will receive $50 each plus a reading at the New Play Festival. Any play that can be joined with one or two other shows of similar length to make up a complete evening of theatre will be entered in this contest. Generally, scripts of about 20-60 pages will fall into this category.

FULL-LENGTH
One to two winners will receive $100 plus a reading at the New Play Festival. Any play that can constitute a complete evening of theatre will be entered in this contest. It is important to note that these shows can be one, two, or more acts, as long as it makes up a complete evening of theatre.

MUSICALS
If five or more musicals are submitted, the theatre reserves the right to create a "musical" category. Musicals are defined as any original play using original or rights permitted musical dialogue to further the story and/or the characters. In the absence of enough qualifying scripts, or if the theatre determines not to create an additional category, any musical will be entered into the appropriate category as defined above.

THEATRE-FOR-YOUTH
If five or more plays intended for and/or by youth are submitted, the theatre reserves the right to create a "theatre-for-youth" category. Theatre-for-youth plays are defined as any original play intended for young audiences, young participants, or both. In the absence of enough qualifying scripts, or if the theatre determines not to create an additional category, any theatre-for-youth submission will be entered into the appropriate category as defined above.

OVERALL CONTEST WINNER/AUDIENCE FAVORITE WINNER
At the theatre's discretion, we reserve the right to designate or not designate an "Overall Contest Winner" from any category and an "Audience-Favorite Winner" from any category at the conclusion of the New Play Festival. No additional prize money is awarded, just bragging rights.

Each playwright may submit up to two plays in any of these combinations:

It is submission time for The Thistle Dew Theatre's New Summer Reading Series!

Readings are sponsored by the Thistle Dew Theatre of Sacramento and presented on the last Sunday of every month.

It is time to submit your play for a self-produced public reading.  

The next available dates are May 27, June 24, July 29, August 25 and September 29.

The Production Particulars:
  1. There is no fee to the playwright.
  2. There will be a $5.00 general admission (No complimentary tickets).  As always, desserts and coffee/tea will be served.
  3. Self-produced means that you, as the playwright, are responsible for casting your actors and for any rehearsals you deem necessary.   Preparation is key to a good reading.  A short critique will follow each reading.
  4. Props are not allowed.
  5. The theatre is NOT open for rehearsals before your reading.
  6. I may book one full-length or two back-to-back full-lengths or one-acts, or a number of monologues from a number of playwrights depending on the submissions I receive.  Each reading will last between 2 and four hours.
  7. One-act plays must be between 10 minutes and 55 minutes; full-lengths between 70 minutes and 120 minutes.  Please indicate the running time when applying.
  8. Your readers will remain seated (no stage blocking) so that the audience can concentrate on your play's structure and your words.
  9. Audiences are formed by reservation only!

My inspiration for this play hit me around the time I graduated college. I was burnt out on spending a year working on my thesis and I wanted to write a fun ten minute as a progressive distraction.  I always loved the absurd idea of trying to buy only one shoe.  I like writing about absurd and quirky elements and using those as catalysts to explain real and true emotions.

SUBMISSION CATEGORIES

NEW PLAY PRODUCTION
We produce scripts that will receive its world, national, regional, and state premiere at The Players Guild Theatre. Submissions must be new, non-musical scripts that are polished and outstanding from cover to cover. Scripts considered for NEW PLAY PRODUCTIONS (typically) have a history of development, be it professional or otherwise, and be producible on our intimate 139 seat thrust stage with mild to moderate technical support.

Note: Playwrights are advised to consider our SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT program if not 100% sure their script is ready for production. Reading plays takes value time and resources. Please, submit to the correct program. Script that start in the SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT program may be considered for future production at The Players Guild Theatre.
Royalty average for NEW PLAY PRODUCTION is $40 per performance; royalty range is $30 to $60 per performance, pending funds.

SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT
We offer two types of script development programs for playwrights:
SCRIPT WORKSHOPS and STAGED READINGS.
All plays submitted into these categories must be professionally un-prodced.

STAGED READINGS are for complete full length scripts in need of artistic and/or audience feedback. Scripts should be in the late or near complete stages development. Viewing may be open to the public audiences or by invite. Please, do not apply for the staged reading program unless your script has received prior feedback, be it professional or private, and should be noted in your cover letter and/or resume. Staged readings, when performed, will be either 1) full script reading or 2) a select scene coupled with other select scenes from other scripts.

SCRIPT WORKSHOPS – limited to Ohio playwrights, native or resident, for 2012-2013 - are designed for completed scripts/drafts that are in need of feedback or a first professional look. This program is great for scripts in the beginning to middle stages of development. These are private workshops that last four to five days evenings/days. Playwrights must be able to attend this program.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL PROGRAMS

Playwrights may submit one new full length stage script. A completed script is required for all programs and must contain a minimum of 45 pages. For NEW PLAY PRODUCTION, scripts must receive its world, national, regional, or Ohio state premiere at The Players Guild Theatre. For SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT, scripts must be professionally un-produced. There is NO submission fee.

All Submission Packages must be e-mailed and include materials in the following order as ONE FILE in PDF format. Again, all three items below, (1) (2) and (3), should arrive in ONE E-MAIL with ONE PDF file attached. Thank you for your compliance.

The DreamCatcher Collective 2012 Inaugural Atlanta Nu-Works Theatre Festival

PARTICIPATION FEES: Once a piece has been selected, the Producer (or party responsible for delivering the production) will be required to submit a particpation fee. This fee is based on the size of the stage and the number of shows requested.

The DreamCatcher Collective (a 501c3) is proud to announce its 2012 Inaugural Atlanta Nu-Works Theatre Festival, a 3-day festival celebrating emerging works and artists in the growing theatre community of Atlanta, GA, October 19 – October 21, 2012.

We are looking for works in all genres; including pieces that incorporate movement, dance, and music. To be eligible to submit, each piece must address a social concern and highlight a person of color in one of four roles: Playwright, Director, Producer, or Lead Actor. This criterion is inapplicable to the Workshop Proposals. Playwrights of all skill levels are encouraged to submit. All chosen Full-length Plays, Short Plays, Children’s Plays, and Scripts (“Just Scripted” Reading Series) will be required to submit a participation fee based on the size and location of the project. The Strawberry Theatre Festival

The Riant Theatre is seeking submissions for The Strawberry Theatre Festival (runs Aug. 3-26) and The Strawberry One-Act Festival (runs July 31-Aug. 18). Van Dirk Fisher, artistic dir. Both festivals run at the 160-seat Theatre at St. Clements in NYC.

The Strawberry Theatre Festival—Full-Length Plays: 60-90 minutes; Full-Length Musicals: not to exceed 120 minutes; Short Plays: 40-60 minutes; Staged Readings.

The Strawberry One-Act Festival—One Act Plays: 15-30 minutes. Note: Plays can advance from the first round to semi-finals, finals, and the awards show and performance. The judges for the finals will consist of two artistic directors, one agent, and one casting dir. The four best plays will perform at the awards ceremony on Aug. 18 and have the option to do an encore performance at one of the Riant Theatre's partner theater companies.

Those producing plays selected for The Strawberry Theatre Festival can perform for three to five performances and elect to share a percentage of the box office by paying a theater usage fee between $1-$9 per ticket to receive a 10-100 percent share of the box office. For the Strawberry One-Act Festival, plays can advance from round one, semi-finals, finals, and the awards show and performance. The judges for the finals will consist of two artistic directors, one agent, and one casting director. The four best plays will perform at the awards ceremony on Aug. 18 and have the option to do an encore performance at one of the Riant Theatre's partner theater companies. Participation fee for the Strawberry Theatre Festival for short plays is $350 and $500 for all other types of work; participation fee for the Strawberry One-Act Festival is $350, which includes an on-camera interview for your play, inclusion in the Riant Theatre's mailing brochures and the Riant Theatre Review Magazine, one ticket to the launch party, two comp tickets whenever your play is performed, one ticket to the finals, and one ticket to the awards ceremony. The production voted "Best Play" receives $1,500; additional awards are given for Best Director ($150), Best Actor ($150), Best Actress ($150), and Best Short Film—The Video Diaries Project, a documentary about the artists in The Strawberry One Act Festival ($250). Some plays will be selected for publication in the "The Best Plays from the Strawberry One Act Festival," an anthology. There is no sharing of the box office for the One-Act Festival.

A. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Your play must meet at least ONE of these:
  • Written or Co-written or Directed by an African-American or individual of African descent.
  • The main character (or at least 2 key roles) performed by an African-American or individual of African descent.
  • Subject or theme based on an historic figure, incident, or period relating to the black experience.
B. PLAY CATEGORIES

Full Length Performance
  •  Production ready (meaning producer, director, cast & crew ready to go by Oct.).
  •  Low impact set, sound, technical & lighting requirement.
  •  Minimum amount of cast & crew.
  •  Total running time of 90-100 minutes without intermission.
  •  U.S. as well as international English speaking submissions are welcome.
  •  Producers must possess 100% of all copyrights including musical scores.
  •  Adhere to the Terms & Conditions set forth by the Festival.
Solo Performance Series
  •  Production ready (meaning producer, director, cast & crew ready to go by Oct.).
  •  Low impact set, sound, technical & lighting requirement.
  •  Cast of ONE (1) actor & crew of less than 3.
  •  Total running time of 45-60 minutes without intermission.
  •  Subject or theme based on an historic figure, incident, or period in black history (preferably well known).
  • U.S. as well as international English speaking submissions are welcome.
  • Producers must possess 100% of all copyrights including musical scores.
  •  Adhere to the Terms & Conditions set forth by the Festival.

    One Act Plays or Shorts
  •   Production ready (meaning producer, director, cast & crew ready to go by Oct.).
  •   Low impact set, sound, technical & lighting requirement.
  •   Total running time of 45-60 minutes without intermission.
  •   U.S. as well as international English speaking submissions are welcome.
  •   Producers must possess 100% of all copyrights including musical scores.
  •   Adhere to the Terms & Conditions set forth by the Festival.
One Act Comedy or Improv - NEW CATEGORY!
  •  Production Ready (meaning producer, director, cast & crew ready to go by Oct.).
  •  Low impact set, sound, technical & lighting requirement.
  •  Total running time 45-60 minutes without intermission.
  •  U.S. as well as international English speaking submissions are welcome.
  •  Producer must possess 100% of all copyrights including musical scores.
