PERFORMING OUR FAITH - The FIAT LUX Drama Award for an One-Act Play

Purpose: With the power to expose, enlighten, and empower us to understand and grow as God's beloved people, theatre can engage us with God's Good News in a gripping way.  Theatre is a powerful tool for showing us who we are created to be and arming us against the threat of meaninglessness.

The winning one-act play will incorporate the above understanding of theatre as an opportunity to reveal the "meaningfulness" of life according to Christian belief.

The play can take any form (comedy, tragedy, etc.) and will dramatically reveal the "meaningfulness" of life according to Christian belief and how our faith nourishes our growth and helps us overcome meaninglessness and evil.

The winning play will be performed as a staged reading in St. Mary's Church in Canadaigua, New York on July 6, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.

Length:  30 minutes
Characters: 5 (max.)
Award criteria:

  • creativity and originality for illustrating the struggle for meaning and value in the context of the Gospel.

Our Judges:
Dr. Kazimierz Braun is a professional theatre director, playwright and scholar.
Kevin O'Brien is the founder and artistic director of Theatre of the Word Incorporated, which travels the country evangelizing through drama, performing plays which Kevin has written.  He hosts "The Theatre of the Word" television series on EWTN, and appears regularly on EWTN's "The Apostle of Common Sense".  Kevin is the editor of the site www.christianshakespeare.com, which is devoted to critical essays on the Christian elements in William Shakespeare's plays.
Emily C. A. Snyder is a published playwright and novelist, whose work has been performed both nationally and internationally, from Dublin, Ireland to Christchurch, New Zealand.  An alumna of Franciscan University of Steubenville (BA: Directing) and Emerson College (MA: Theatre Education), she has also studied at The Shakespeare School in London and Stratford-upon-Avon, where she developed new approaches to performing and writing in verse drama.  In 2009, her original five act iambic pentameter play, Cupid and Psyche was performed in Boston, and is currently in workshops in New York City
