The Submissions:
Please email new, original 10-minute plays with minimal set requirements.

Plays that have had no prior productions or with recent (last 2-3 years) production history are accepted.  Musical submissions with little or no accompaniment are accepted.   Monologues are not accepted. Plays that have been published are not accepted.

Playwrights may submit up to 2 plays in standard format (Courier or 12 pt font) in Word or PDF.

Send 2 separate emails for each play.

Email 1.
The subject line is the title of the play followed by the words 'contact info.'   (Example subject line: Fighting Mr. Right contact info).
The BODY of the email MUST include the title of the play and the playwright’s contact information (including playwright’s name, mailing address, phone(s), email).   Do not attach contact information as an attachment to this email. Send this email here.

Email 2.
The subject line and name of attached file is the title of the play.  (Example subject line: Fighting Mr. Right)
The attached file contains cast, set requirements, and script.  No contact information of any kind should be included in the script.  Send this email here.

When submitting two scripts four separate emails must be sent.  Please do not zip the files.

Submission Dates:
January 7, 2013-February 4, 2013
Submissions will start being accepted on January 7, 2013.  Plays submitted before this date will not be accepted.

Deadline:
Submissions must be received by the 5:00PM EST on February 4, 2013.  Plays will not  be accepted after this date and time.

We will notify the 25 semi-finalists by email and will post those titles on our website.

We will notify the 10 finalists by email and will post those titles on our website.

We are sorry we cannot respond to each individual playwright.

We will announce the final 10 productions by May 24, 2013.

The Award:
Playwrights receive an award of $100.

Playwrights' Gala: July 13, 2013
Playwrights who attend our Playwrights Gala on Saturday, July 13, 2013 will receive an additional $100 travel stipend. Participating playwrights are invited to a post-show discussion/reception and an overnight stay in Chapel Hill, NC.

The Space:
Our main-stage theatre is a 325-seat house with basic lighting and sound capabilities.

The Producer:
ArtsCenter Stage will provide directors, actors, designers, and technical crew for the festival.  The directors will contact the playwrights at the beginning of the rehearsal process.  For more information about The ArtsCenter visit our wesbite.

The Production:

3rd Annual NFA New Works Festival

The Newburgh Free Academy Drama Department will be accepting ten-minute play submissions for their 3rd annual new play festival hosted by the upper level acting classes. NFA is an at-risk high school located in Hudson Valley, NY. The plays will be performed in our state-of-the-art black box theatre where students run every aspect of the show, including the reading and choosing process.

Guidlines are as follows:

*Only Ten Minutes (or less). 

*Playwright may submit up to two plays only. Please send multiple copies of your work, as the school has limited faculty and staff on how many copies we’re allowed to make. 

*Plays must be unplublished. Recent past or present productions/workshops/readings are okay.

* We prefer plays with no more than three characters. Four is the maximum. There are 23 actors in the troupe (21F/2M). Of course, we cast blind so guys can play female roles and vice-versa. There is no limit on content or themes, however should your work be chosen, the playwright may be asked to rework questionable language or content. Students will NEVER change something without the consent of the playwright. In fact, one of the great things about this project is the opportunity for students  and professional writers to correspond with one another.

“Play Café” is looking for a few good playwrights for our Spring/Summer season.
This Berkshire-based (western MA) community access TV show, which presents table readings of short scenes and plays followed by a discussion with the playwright, is gearing up for its first full year of production. The series was developed to allow viewers to see how plays grow through watching them being read and discussed by the playwrights and actors themselves. The show is broadcast in the Berkshires of MA, and is streamed online for a wider audience.

In order to be considered, scripts must be under 15 minutes long with three or fewer actors. Any topic is considered, though this is broadcast during daytime and prime time.

Playwrights may submit more than one work.

Author must own the copyright for the script

The playwright must be available for in-studio taping and have the actors ready to go on the day of show. Unfortunately, due to our budget constraints, we cannot accommodate a union cast at present.

We can offer credits, glory, and a copy of the DVD for all those involved to add to their reels.

Theatre Trail Writers Competition 2013

The Arundel Festival Theatre Trail, conceived and presented by Drip Action Theatre Company, is now in its thirteenth year. It performs at the end of August, on each of the Festival’s eight days, eight short plays at eight different venues all over Arundel – this year, for example, in a church hall, a kitchen, a ballroom and Arundel Jailhouse. An audience of nearly 2,000 came to see the eight 2012 Theatre Trail plays. The Trail is firmly established as one of the major components in the Festival and is a great showcase for both new and established writers.

Writers are invited to submit plays for next year’s Trail.

Plays should be between 30 and 40 minutes long, with practicable casting, props and effects. All entries should be submitted to

Thanks to everybody who submitted work for the NYCPlaywrights February 2013 Play of the Month call for submissions. We received 115 ten-minute plays. We will be reviewing the semi-finalists on Wednesday, February 6 and will announce the winner shortly after. Thank you for your patience.

Scorpio Theatre is now accepting script submissions for its 2013-2014 season. Scorpio Theatre’s mandate is to workshop and stage any new work, or works which have not been staged in Calgary. If you’re interested, please direct all submissions to “aconrad@scorpio.ca“ and include the following:

  • Which aspect of the production (if any) that you’d be interested in undertaking.

Call for Submissions to the second annual BUA Takes 10: LGBT Short Stories evening of ten-minute plays.  BUA Takes 10 will run four weekends beginning June 22, 2013, at Buffalo United Artists, 119 W Chippewa St, Buffalo, NY 14202.

Submission Guidelines:

*Please review and follow guidelines. We’re more apt to take a play seriously when it’s clear that the playwright has taken us seriously.

*All plays must have an LGBT theme that is central to the play’s premise.

*Playwrights may submit no more than two plays.

*Please don’t resubmit plays that were submitted last year.

*All plays must be no longer than ten minutes, which may actually be fewer than ten pages. If you’re not sure, please read it aloud.  No exceptions, no matter how brilliant the extra minutes may be. We mean it.

*All plays must have minimal set requirements. Plays chosen will receive full productions at BUA’s black box theater, but as there will be ten plays being performed, there will be no time for elaborate set changes.

*Please email ten-minute plays with minimal set requirements to buasubmissions@gmail.com in standard format in Word or PDF.

*Important: subject line should have your name and title of the play, e.g. BROWN/MY GAY PLAY.

*Body of email should contain contact information (including email and phone) and the play’s production history ONLY. You don’t have to write a cover letter, so seriously, please don’t.

Women's Work: Call for Sapphic Scripts

Pride Films and Plays presents Women's Work, a contest for writers who just happen to be women. We endeavor to enhance the visibility of women who write and offer them opportunities to be heard loud and clear. Or in this case, loud and queer.

The Women's Work contest fosters excellence in work written by women intended for live performance. All scripts submitted must be written by a woman (or women) and feature lesbian characters, history, or themes pertinent to the lesbian community and relevant to the world. We are accepting both full-length scripts and short plays.

Scripts will be judged by a panel of theatre professionals. Past judges include Barb Lhota, Ebony Joy, Lindsay Bartlett, Marga Gomez, Rebecca Kling, Tara Mallen, and Vanda.

Contest finalists will receive a cash prize and a staged reading of their work in Chicago.

There is no entry fee if you submit between January 15 and January 31, 2013.

Ars Nova Announces ANT Fest 2013

Ars Nova announces a call for submissions for its sixth annual ANT Fest, a month-long festival of all new talent from June 3 to June 29, showcasing fresh material from New York’s most exciting emerging artists.

Ars Nova is on the prowl for talented artists who see the future of live entertainment and want the chance to show off their skills.  We’re interested in edgy, offbeat, charged performances that tell a story, make us laugh, showcase musicians with a vibrant new sound, or blur the boundaries between theater, music and comedy.  If it can be performed live on stage, we’re interested.

Beginning this year, ANT Fest will be expanded to include a late night 54/10 Concert Series, featuring performances by rising singer/songwriters, musicians and bands. The integration of Ars Nova's successful 54/10 Music Marathon into ANT Fest will create an even larger platform for burgeoning music artists, introducing them to a variety of theatre-makers and Ars Nova's artist community at large, in an effort to spark future project collaborations, in addition to showcasing individual work.

The Other Side of the Coin explores Federico Lorca’s final poems, “Ferias and acts of creative and political resistance against fascist structures and oppression.” Signdance Collective International is led by Isolte Avila and David Bower, principal figures in disability arts practice, who developed the art form signdance theater in 1987.

Signdance Collective International (SDC) was established in 2001 as a platform to further the art form through international collaborative projects. SDC is the company in residence at Bucks New University’s Theatre Department, where it empowers aspiring performers through workshops that focus on diversity as well as the technical and expressive capability of the performers. Wilder Wilder Everywhere Video Contest.

As part of the ongoing celebration of the 75th anniversary of Our Town, and in recognition of Thornton Wilder’s position as one of the preeminent chroniclers of American life, Playscripts, Inc. and The Wilder Family LLC are proud to announce the Wilder Wilder Everywhere Video Contest.

The Basics


To enter, create a video that either faithfully dramatizes, or adapts one of Thornton Wilder’s playlets into a short film.  Wilder's plays present a universal and timeless vision of American life; your videos are an opportunity to stage his work  in your America.  We'd love to see videos filmed in unexpected, intriguing or iconic settings all over America- from the top of Mount Rushmore to the bottom of your neighborhood swimming pool.  You can read all the playlets here.
During the submission period (January 14th-28th) you may upload your video to our Facebook event page here,  and encourage your friends and family to "like" your video on the page.

The Rules

  • Your video must use all the original characters from the selected playet, but feel free to add characters.
  • Your video must contain at least 5 lines of dialogue (one line is defined as at least one sentence long) from the selected playet. The lines of dialogue do not have to be consecutive.
  • Your video must between 90 seconds and 3 minutes.
  • The videos with the most "likes" will advance to the finals.

  • October 8, 2012 - The contest begins
  • January 14, 2013 - Submissions open and public voting begins at 12:00 AM EST.
  • January 28, 2013-  Submissions and public voting are closed at 12:00 PM EST. Finalists will be announced later that day.

Suspense: Scriptwriting contest for radio theatre

Rules for Scriptwriting Contest for Radio Theatre

• The script should be between 15 minutes and 25 minutes in length.

• It must be an original script, unpublished, unproduced and free of royalty and copyright restrictions.

• It must be appropriate in language and theme for a “family” audience.

• There are no limits on cast size, sound effects or settings, but keep in mind that your script should be able to be performed with an ensemble of 6 to 12 people, and the sound will be created by a table full of gadgets, gizmos and the vocal talent of our sound effect wizards. We use an electronic keyboard for musical intros and outros, but we do not use pre-recorded sound effects or licensed musical recordings in our shows.

• You can choose to write in the style of old-time radio, or you can go for something completely modern and original. We want to shed new light en the audio drama as an entertainment form, and introduce a new generation to the enjoyment of Theatre for the Ear.

• Up to 3 scripts may be submitted by one author.

• All scripts must he postmarked by or before February 1, 2013. 

Winners will be notified by April 1, 2013.

• Scripts will be judged anonymously by a panel selected by the Board of Directors of the On-the-Air Radio Players.


How to Submit a Script:

All scripts should be typed, numbered and securely bound. The author’s name should not appear anywhere in the manuscript except the first title page.

Please include TWO title pages: The first one will include the title, your name, address, phone number, and email address. The second title page will have the title only.

Use a standard radio script format — see sample.

Scripts will not be returned, so save a copy for yourself!

The Bertarelli Foundation Creative Minds Festival Playwright Competition

You're a playwright? Or you're a teacher and want to encourage your students' creative self-expression using playwriting as a catalyst?

Or maybe you're a parent looking for something constructive for your kids to do this Easter, or a theatre professional hoping to make a dramatic difference for UK’s youth.

If any of these are you, then The Bertarelli Foundation Creative Minds Festival may be of interest.

An annual event, held in Stoke-on-Trent every July, the Creative Minds Team are launching a playwright competition, looking for three ten – twelve minute pieces to be staged during the 2013 festival ( 2 – 6 July 2013)

The competition will see three awards of £350 to the author / authors of the three pieces selected.

The Theme
The theme is LOCAL & GLOBAL with particular reference to Stoke and Staffordshire. It could cover such areas as:-

What is happening in the local community?
What is happening in the world at large?
What is it to be born and/or live in Stoke and Staffordshire
What does the region offer the world
What has the region offered the world

The piece should generate a great deal of discussion as it will ask participants and practitioners, those acting in it, directing it and seeing it performed, to look at current as well as historical issues within the region and, through debate, offer the opportunity to make sense of what is going on today as well as reflect upon what has happened in years gone by.

It should also encourage everyone involved to look at issues both at home and in the wider world and allow everyone the chance to explore their own attitudes and values within a structured framework

The Submissions

A submission must be:

The Selection Process

Every piece will be read by a team of professionals from the theatre industry and/or academia. Sorry, but no critique or feedback will be offered.

On Saturday, March 30, 2013, the east side’s Ensemble Theatre and the west side’s Convergence Continuum will host Northeast Ohio’s contribution to the sixth annual SWAN Day, an international celebration of women in the arts.  Here in the 4th-largest theater-producing area in the USA, SWAN Day CLE – 2013 will be staging readings of short plays to raise awareness and to celebrate women playwrights, directors, and actors.
If you’re interested in participating, meet ALL of these criteria:
1.You’re a woman
2.You’ve written a 6-10 page play* that speaks to women’s experience or history or both
3.Your play calls for 2-5 actors (double-casting for more roles is fine)
4.Your play calls for more than 50% female actors (2:1 or 3:2 women:men, or all female)
5.Your play is new or slightly used – no more than one previous public reading or workshop or production
6.You save your play in standard format* as a PDF file that includes numbered pages; a separate page with character list, settings, time period, production notes; a separate title page; 12-pt type; at-least-1-inch margins
7.You put your PDF standard-formatted play*, contact info, and a
100-word bio into an email

2013 10-Minute Plays Rules and Guidelines

Heartland Theatre Company is seeking eight short original plays to be considered for production in June of 2013 as part of our 12th annual 10-minute play festival. This year, the theme is “The Parcel, the Package or the Present,” which means we are looking for plays which involve a parcel of some sort.






THE PARCEL, THE PACKAGE OR THE PRESENT

The Misdelivered Package is a plot staple, whether the parcel in question contains the Maltese Falcon, a bomb about to go off, the names of all the spies in Poland, or a kilo of cocaine from Colombia. There have been more packages used as McGuffins in plays, movies and TV shows than you can fit inside the largest box UPS will deliver.
When you have a parcel, when you don’t know what’s inside, when the recipient is suspicious of the giver or the sender, when the giver can’t rely on how the recipient will react, there’s plenty of dramatic potential.
Your 10-minute play can center on a tiny blue box from Tiffany & Co., a beautifully wrapped birthday present, a weird old shoebox with breathing holes poked in the top, a wooden crate full of albums from the 70s, a plastic “cremains” container, a makeup case with Barbie stickers on the outside, or a strange, lumpy parcel covered in stained brown paper and secured with string, bearing no return address but postage from Ulan Bator.
It can be any kind of parcel, package, packet, box, bundle, case, carton or container, as long as it’s no smaller than a ring box and no bigger than an orange crate. Anything in the middle is just fine. And what’s inside this mysterious parcel is completely up to you.


The competition is open to all playwrights who wish to submit a play. Eight plays will be selected and performed from among all the submissions

RULES & GUIDELINES

1. Your play must fit the theme – THE PARCEL, THE PACKAGE OR THE PRESENT – or it will not be considered.
2. Your play must fit our theater and its performance space.
3. We require internet submissions in MS Word.
4. When formatting your play, we ask that you follow our style sheet.
4. We are looking for NEW plays. Please do not send us anything that has previously been produced.
5. Your play may contain no more than four (4) characters and no less than two (2).
6. Heartland Theatre Company has a pool of actors ranging in age from 18 to 70. Make sure that your characters can be played by actors within that range.
7. Your play should consist mainly of dialogue, not monologues.
8. No children’s plays, musicals, or plays which were previously chosen as winners in any Heartland Theatre playwriting competition will be considered.
9. Do not put your name on the play itself, as submissions are judged blind. Make sure your title appears on every page of the play, however.
10. If your play cannot be considered for any reason, we will notify you as soon as possible. If, in the judges’ opinion, the problem is easily fixable and the play otherwise has merit, we may ask you for revisions. Asking for revisions is completely up to the judges and depends a great deal on timing. No plays submitted after January 1 will be considered for revisions.
11. Those plays which win and are staged will be videotaped for archival purposes.
12. No contracts beyond the guidelines mentioned here will be offered.
13. Only one entry will be accepted from any playwright.
14. Your play must be written in English.
15. Keep your play under ten minutes in length.
16. Remember that something has to happen in those ten minutes.
17. MAKE IT GOOD!

Columbia-Greene Playwright Project 2013 - JFK

Director Stewart J. Zully, in association with Columbia-Greene Community College, has announced a play competition for spring 2013 that focuses on the subject of former President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Taking its inspiration from the 50th anniversary of the J.F.K. assassination, in 2013, the Columbia-Greene Playwright Project 2013 kicks off with requests for plays related to any of the individuals connected to the date Nov. 22, 1963, including such figures as J.F.K. himself, former President Lyndon B. Johnson, Jackie Kennedy or Lee Harvey Oswald. Submitted plays should be full length, with a maximum of eight characters. Only one play per writer will be accepted.

"I am please to initiate this exciting new project at Columbia-Greene Community College," Zully said.

Deadline for submission is February 1, 2013. 

The selected play will be chosen March 15, with the winning playwright receiving a $200 stipend.

Play Submissions

The Landing Theatre Company in conjunction with Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company and Wordsmyth Theater is now accepting full-length plays for the new Landing Theatre Festival being held July 17-21, 2013 in Houston, Texas. Four plays will be selected for staged readings at the festival. Selected playwrights receive a complimentary Festival Pass, but must cover their own travel expenses. The Festival will offer a number of workshops, and discounts to Landing Theatre Company productions.

Fees

There are no fees for submitting.

Format

  1. Selected playwrights must attend the festival.  
  2. Each playwright will be paired with a local director prior to the Festival to prepare for the event.
  3. Director will cast the play prior to the festival.
  4. Each production will receive at least two rehearsals prior to the official reading.
  5. One rehearsal will be scheduled when the playwright can attend.
  6. The play will then be read in front of an audience, with a moderated discussion of the play afterwards.
  7. Video tape of reading and discussion will be provided to the playwright after the event.

Submissions must meet the following criteria:

  1. Playwright must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States of America.
  2. Play must not have been produced.
  3. Play must not have had a public reading in the Houston area.
  4. Submission must be received on or before January 31, 2013.
  5. Submission must be a minimum of 30 pages long and have a minimum run time of 45 minutes.
  6. Submission must be in .doc, .pdf or .rtf format.
  7. Plays are given blind reads, so there should be no playwright identifiers anywhere on the script.  Your name and/or contact information should only be in the email.
  8. Only one play per playwright per submission period.
  9. No musicals, children's plays, or one-person plays. 
  10. Playwrights will only be notified if your play is selected.

NYCPlaywrights Play of the Month - February 2013


Submissions are now being accepted for the NYCPlaywrights February 2013 Play of the Month.

The theme is "Two Hander in Love." It can be a comedy or a drama, but should not have a bitter, cynical, take-my-wife-please approach. This is about sincere romantic love. The romantic love can be hetero-normative or LGBT, but the script should call for no more than two characters on stage - it should be a two-hander.

The deadline is Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 11:59 PM EDT.
  1. Send only one ten-minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org
  2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or pdf. Most preferable is .pdf (Portable Document Format) because it will retain your original script formatting.
  3. The script can be no longer than 10 pages (not including title page, setting info page, etc. - pages will be counted only from where the actual stage directions and dialog begin.)
  4. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site: http://nycp.blogspot.com/p/playscript-formatting-template.html
    Plays that are not in standard format, or that have more than 10 pages (not counting title page, etc.) will be rejected immediately.
  5. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.
  6. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)
  7. There is no fee for submission.
  8. The writer of the selected play will be awarded $10.
  9. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.
  10. The play must have been written by the person making the submission.
  11. A play that has had a production is acceptable.
  12. A play that has been published is not acceptable.
  13. All rights will remain with the playwright.
  14. The selected play will be video-recorded and posted during the month of February 2013.
  15. The video recording of the play will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording and approve it before it is made public.
  16. The play must reflect the month's theme in some meaningful way.
  17. The play should be a complete 10-minute play, not an excerpt from a longer work.
  18. Save yourself some time and trouble - don't send your bio, resume and list of theater accomplishments along with your submission. We only care about the script. If your play is selected, you will then be asked for your theater bio.

Minifest

Each year, the Acadia Theatre Company presents a student run festival of 6-8 one act plays. Minifest, now in its 22nd year, is one of Acadia's most popular student events. Minifest is the final production of the Theatre year.

We welcome submissions from new and experienced playwrights. If you have a play that meets these guidelines, please submit it for our consideration. Plays are selected by a student selection committee.

Minifest Submission Guidelines

Anyone can submit an original play, provided that it has not been previously performed.

Guidelines

  1. The play can be NO longer then 30 minutes in length. Playwrights can submit more than one play.
  2. Plays with more than two or three characters, and plays with substantial parts for women actors will be of particular interest.
  3. The plays selected will be chosen for their dramatic quality, but also for their suitability for the actors and numbers of actors available in any year. Since Minifest is modestly funded, plays will also be considered from the point of view of their simplicity in staging requirements. Plays requiring elaborate scenery and effects may have to be passed over in spite of their quality.
  4. Manuscripts must be submitted no later than midnight on January 31, 2013.
  5. Playwrights are invited to attend rehearsals, by agreement with their director. Rehearsals start in March 2013.
  6. Minifest will present up to six plays on two consecutive nights. Each evening of plays will then play two more times. Minifest 2013 will take place April 3-6, 2013.
  7. Successful playwrights will not be offered royalties, but will be offered four complimentary tickets for their first night.
  8. To ensure anonymity in the selection process, the author's name should only appear on a page that can be separated from the script.
  9. Scripts which have not been selected will be returned to their authors, provided that a stamped, self-addressed envelope is included with the MS.

The Modern-Day Griot Theatre Company is accepting submissions of one-act plays to be performed during a weekend of staged readings for our “See, Hear, Taste, Touch” series in March.  This event is part of our Women’s Month celebration and will be performed in New York City.

We are only accepting original work by women playwrights.

All plays must be production-ready, typewritten, have 1-6 characters, and must have a running time of 20 minutes or less.

Any genre (comedy, tragedy, etc) is accepted, but the plays must have a fresh plot, sufficient conflict, and a provocative and engaging text.

Deadline for submissions is January 25, 2013 at 10pm EST.

ATHE's Playwrights and Creative Teams Program (PACT) seeks new, previously unproduced short plays for its 24th annual New Play Development Workshop at the ATHE Conference, at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, Orlando, Florida, July 31 – August 4, 2013.

We invite playwrights to submit plays ranging in length from 4-10 minutes (scripts over 10 pages long – not including cover page - will not be accepted); there is no restriction on subject matter, style, or intended audience. A jury of readers will select six to eight scripts. Each playwright will be assigned a director, dramaturg, scenographer, and a group of actors; these creative teams collaborate on the scripts throughout the conference in a developmental process (participants may attend the rest of the conference). The workshop culminates in a public, script-in-hand reading of the plays in a SHOWCASE OF SCRIPTS.

The New Play Development Workshop affords playwrights the opportunity to work on their scripts with artists experienced with original material from all over the country and to have their work presented at a major academic theatre conference. In past years, plays which have gone through this process have been published in a PACT Program anthology.  These plays achieve a high rate of success in securing subsequent productions and publication.

PLEASE READ SUBMISSION POLICY CAREFULLY AS INCOMPLETE/INCORRECT SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED:

AWARDS
The selected playwright's script will be workshopped, culminating in either a staged reading or a fully realized production by the WSU School of Performing Arts Program. Active participation by the playwright is required. The production will be an associate or participating entry in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and the script will be submitted to KCACTF for consideration in playwriting award categories.The "prize" for the winner is travel and lodging so that the playwright may attend the production.

JUDGING
Judging will be conducted by a panel of three or more selected from the school faculty and may also include up to three experienced, faculty approved WSU School of Performing Arts students.

RULES
1) The contest will be open to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at any college or university in the United States. Please indicate school affiliation.

2) All submissions must be original, unpublished and unproduced.

3) Both full-length and one act plays may be submitted.
(a) Full length plays in one or more acts should be a minimum of 90 minutes playing time.
(b) Two or three short plays on related themes by the same author will be judged
as one entry. The total playing time should be a minimum of 90 minutes.
(c) One act plays should be a minimum of 30 minutes playing time to a maximum
of 60 minutes playing time.
(d) Musicals should be a minimum of 90 minutes playing time and must include
a CD of the accompanying music.

4) Scripts should contain no more than 4 to 6 characters and setting must be suitable for
an 85-seat Black box theatre.

5) Eligible playwrights may submit up to two entries per contest year.

6) One typewritten, bound copy should be submitted. Scripts must be typed and arranged in professional play script format. See information provided in The Dramatist's Source Book or the following website: http://www.pubinfo.vcu.edu/artweb/playwriting/format.html for instruction on use of professional format. Two title pages must be included: one bound and the other unbound. The unbound title page should display the author's name, address, telephone number and email address if applicable. BIG Theatre Company is currently seeking submissions for a spring production of "Untitled Poe Project" as part of their FlashWorks Series, which showcases original works inspired by the writings of a single, iconic author or subject matter.

Submissions should be no longer than 15 minutes in length and based on a short-story and/or poem of Edgar Allan Poe. Examples include "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Black Cat," "The Bells," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "Eldorado," and so on.

Call for Scripts: Freshwater Theatre Goes Back to High School

Freshwater is issuing a call for original one act scripts for our upcoming spring repertory production, Freshwater Goes to High School.  All chosen scripts will be non-exclusively published in an anthology.  Authors will retain all rights to their work and all future royalties.

These scripts should be written to follow the Minnesota State High School League guidelines for one act play competitions (please see link below).   Our goal with this show is to produce an evening of truly new, topical one acts suited in tone, content and length for production at the high school level, and provide new material for high school directors in the region.

Set and costume requirements should be simple, as they must be portable and quickly set up in a competition situation.  Thirty five minutes is the maximum length allowed.

We are looking for pieces that will stretch and challenge young actors.  Just because we are seeking scripts appropriate for teens does not mean the shows cannot grapple with tough issues. Comedies and dramas will be be given equal consideration.

Quickies is a Live Girls! trademark event and the longest running program. 2013 will bring our 14th installation of this short play event, which includes 7 short plays by women every year, as well as up and coming local directors and actors. Quickies Volume 14 will be performed in association with Theater Off Jackson in June 2013. We are working with the themes of  ”Exploration” & “Discovery” for our 14th edition and plays that fit these themes are highly encouraged (though not required).

Returning for 2013 is our Spring Cupcake Reading Series. We will be presenting readings of 5-8 plays over a week to showcase a wide variety of plays and writers.  Dates and location TBA.

GENERAL

In the body of your email please introduce yourself. We are always excited about meeting new playwrights! You should also include: any previous production history for plays submitted.  You may include a bio or resume if you like, but they are not required.
Plays submitted should be sent as attachments;  MS Word is preferable (More compatible with e-readers) but PDFs are also accepted.

We are looking for a wide variety of interesting plays for readings.  All styles and subject matter are welcome.
Playwrights may submit up to two plays and should include a brief synopsis of the play along with character descriptions.

Works selected will meet with a Producer/ Director/ Choreographer to discuss an individual plan for your musical including submitting it to festivals after a series of readings and workshop productions. Musicals selected will have their musical COMPLETELY financially produced as well as turn there work over to an extremely collaborative Director/ Choreographer who will work with the authors the entire time to ensure their work is being handled properly.

To submit, please send a detailed Synopsis of your musical including a Cast List. Please also send a recording of what you consider the best song in the show and a brief context to go with the song (who sings it? When? Why?). Please also send a list of writers including their bios.

Yale Institute for Music Theatre seeks three original music theatre works

The YALE INSTITUTE FOR MUSIC THEATRE (Mark Brokaw, Artistic Director) will select up to three original music theatre works to be developed in an intensive lab setting in New Haven June 3–16, 2013.

Submissions will be accepted October 29, 2012, through January 8, 2013. 

Now in its fifth year, the Yale Institute for Music Theatre bridges the gap between training and the professional world for emerging composers, book writers, and lyricists. The Institute seeks distinctive and original music theatre works by emerging composers and writers to be developed in an intensive lab setting. During a two-week summer residency in New Haven, the Institute matches the authors of the selected works with collaborators, including professional directors and music directors, as well as a company of actors and singers that includes professionals from NYC and current Yale students. The residency culminates with open rehearsal readings of each project, presented as part of the 2013 International Festival of Arts & Ideas.

Originally established in 2009 by Yale School of Drama and Yale School of Music, the Institute became a part of the Binger Center for New Theatre in the 2012-13 season.


ELIGIBILITY

The Yale Institute for Music Theatre accepts applications for projects at various stages of development but focuses on work that is ready to be explored musically and dramatically with performers and directors. Submissions cannot have had a professional production.

Book musicals and other imaginative music theatre projects are welcome. Only composers, book writers, or lyricists who are current graduate students; or who have graduated from an accredited degree-granting institution (undergraduate or graduate) within the past five years; or who are current Yale students (undergraduate or graduate) are eligible to apply.

Applicants may only submit one work for consideration. Composers and writers may apply as individuals or as part of a team.

Participants must be available for the full duration of the residency. Each member of the writing team will receive an honorarium of $1,000, as well as round-trip transportation and accommodation.



GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION

Submissions will be accepted beginning October 29, 2012, and must be received by January 8, 2013. Note: this is not a postmark date.

All submissions must include one copy of each of the following:

a script with lyrics or a full libretto (no DVDs, videotapes, or photographs);
a synopsis of no more than one page, with a list of characters and instrumentation;
a CD (no audio tapes) of at least 20 minutes of music, including a minimum of five songs accompanied by the sheet music for those songs. Piano and vocals are sufficient, and a composer’s demo is acceptable though not preferred. Studio demos are not necessary. No midi recordings will be accepted. Music files must be in mp3 format. Songs must be in sequence on the CD and clearly noted in the script;
a one-page biography or resume for each creative artist;
the history of the work’s development and a brief description of what the creative team hopes to achieve at the Institute;
a completed application form signed by all collaborators (composer, book writer, lyricist). If the proposed project is an adaptation of an existing work that is not in the public domain, proof of fully secured rights must accompany the submission.

Shoestring Radio Theatre accepts submissions from writers

"Shoestring Radio Theatre" accepts submissions from writers. We are always looking for good, original radio plays of any genre. We have produced dozens of scripts submitted by writers from all over the world who originally found us on the web.

Format
Your script needs to be a radio play (i.e. no stage directions or visual cues). We do not accept stage plays or screenplays. Radio drama scripts should include only things you can hear—i.e. dialogue, sound effects and music cues (stings, transitions, etc.). There is no industry standard for radio drama script layout, so we will leave the exact formatting up to you; just make sure that it's easy to distinguish the dialogue from the sfx and music.

Length
To fit into our weekly 30-minute broadcast, plays can be a maximum of 28 minutes long (most scripts are about one minute per page but it depends on the formatting). Therefore, we accept 25-28 minute plays (which air in one part) and 50-56 minute plays (which air in two parts). We also accept shorts, which can be up to 10 minutes in length.

Fame Not Fortune
As a non-profit organization which really does operate on a shoestring budget, we do not pay for scripts at this point in time. However, if we produce your play, we absorb all production costs and it will air nationally on public radio stations across the country (including our RealAudio simulcast). You will also receive a copy of the finished production.

Agreement
If we accept your script, we will send you a writer's agreement, which:

  • Grants us permission to produce your script
  • Grants us Public Broadcasting rights to the finished production
  • Grants you, the writer, all rights to the original script


Feedback Policy
Unfortunately, due to the volume of scripts we receive, we cannot provide feedback on your scripts. Please do not be discouraged if we reject your submission. We reject scripts for any number of reasons, including excessive length, unsuitable content, and sometimes writing quality. Unfortunately, even if we really like the idea, we do not have time to work with writers to improve their scripts. Our advice is to keep writing as much as possible to gain experience, show your scripts to others for feedback, and take writing classes if you feel it would be helpful. Good luck!

CALL FOR SCRIPTS: M-NCPPC ONE-ACT MUSICAL

DEADLINE JANUARY 15, 2013

The Maryland-National Capital Parka and Planning Commission, Arts & Cultural Heritage Division in Prince George's County, announces a call for submission of original scripts, in English, musical or non-musical, to be used for the annual children's theatre production that tours Prince George's County as part of M-NCPPC programs. Intended audience is children 6 to 12 years of age. The play will be developed as a musical and performed by actors aged 16 to 20. Awards of $1,000.00 will be presented to finalists, whose plays shall be developed during the Spring of 2013 and produced by M-NCPPC during the Summer of 2013, at its sole discretion. Up to two First Prize Awards may be chosen. A play submitted with full musical score including recorded soundtrack suitable for performance use shall be eligible for an additional award of $1,200 for Musical Composition. 

Guidelines: Original plays to be submitted may be new, original conceptions or may be adaptations or dramatizations of fairytales, myths or other works. If adapted material is submitted, written proof must also be submitted indicating that the material used for the script is in the public domain. Only one submission per playwright or collaborating team will be permitted. 

A collaborating team, who will share the First Prize Awards, may write the book, lyrics and musical score. In the case of a play submitted as book and lyrics only, a composer will be selected by The M-NCPPC to score the music and produce the recorded soundtrack. 

Submissions must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2013.

Total Playing Time, must be 45 minutes minimum to a maximum of one hour.
Plays submitted must limit to no more than ten (10), the number of actors needed to perform the piece, although actors may perform more than one role. Scenic elements are set-up by the actors in 30 minutes before each performance and are loaded out after each performance. Plays should not be dependent upon theatrical lighting instruments. Plays may call for a pre-recorded musical sound track and other sound cues, but cannot require a live orchestra or band for production. Electronically synthesized music or pre-recorded piano accompaniment is acceptable.

THE COLD CASE CRISIS PLAYS

Dear Playwright,

You are invited to submit an original 10-minute play to Abingdon Theatre Company’s THE COLD CASE CRISIS PLAYS Benefit Challenge Series. This effort engages artists who support a theatre dedicated to new plays.

Our Cold Case Crisis Benefit Challenge Series asks you to unleash your creativity by writing a short play where a character deals with or is confronted by a person, item, or unresolved issue that has been long gone, dormant or missing but has been suddenly reactivated.  It can be an internal revelation or an external force where the character is driven to seek resolution.  This resolution may not be successful.  Be creative!  Consider all forms of the cold case, from a missing person or item, to an unsolved crime, to an unresolved relationship.

We strongly encourage original play submissions that are developed for this presentation.

Using your skills and imagination, write an original play that will be presented as a staged reading on the set of Abingdon’s next production, BODEGA BAY, by Elisabeth Karlin and directed by Sturgis Warner.   The Benefit Challenge Series seeks plays written in any style that reveal a fresh plot, sufficient conflict and a running time of 10 minutes, maximum. Plays are due at midnight on Friday, January 11, 2013.  SERIES A performs on Tuesday, February 5, and SERIES B performs on Tuesday, February 12. Are you ready? Here are the guidelines. Please read carefully! 

GENERAL GUIDELINES:
  1. Abingdon presents the play. We provide the actors, directors, stage manager, rehearsal space and the theatre (the 55-seat Dorothy Strelsin Theatre at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex, 312 W. 36th Street, NYC).  There is no fee or cost to the playwright!
  2. This is also a fundraiser to support Abingdon’s New Play Development Program. ALL participants are donating their time and talent, and HELPING TO RECRUIT AN AUDIENCE. Our goal is to fill every seat in the house!  The suggested audience donation is $10.
  3. Each playwright and director will be able to attend the staged reading of their script in designated seating.
  4. Every play gets two performances.


Please make sure you follow all submission requirements.

SCRIPT GUIDELINES:
1.     Your play must adhere to the theme of a cold case.
2.     Your play must define the setting.  The stage is a raised, open platform.  Your play can take place in or out of doors.  Available set pieces are a table and 2 chairs.
3.     Write for a cast of 2-3 actors (any age, race, ethnicity, or gender).
4.     We prefer scripts that can be staged without relying on stage directions. If stage directions are necessary, please keep them to a minimum.
5.     Your script will be presented as a staged reading in accordance with AEA guidelines. Keep production values to a minimum. Costumes are at the discretion of the director and the willing cooperation of the actors. No hand props can be used.
6.     Plays should be in standard script format: 12 point font, 1” margins on all sides, and character names on a separate line. On your title page, please include your contact information (phone, email and address).  Be sure to number all pages.
7.     Submit scripts in MS-Word - preferred - or PDF format.
8.     Scripts longer than 10 pages – title and character breakdown pages are not counted – will NOT be considered.  Regardless of the number of pages, the running time MUST be no more than 10 minutes!
9.     You may only submit one script for consideration.
10.  Playwrights must attend the staged readings of their play.  Please specify your availability for SERIES A (2/5), and/or SERIES B (2/12). If you are available for either slot, let us know that, too!
11.  We encourage you to attend rehearsals, if possible.  The schedule will be determined later.
12.  The deadline for script submission is midnight, January 11. Up to 12 scripts will be chosen.
