2014 Centre Stage New Play Festival

web site

We are now accepting submissions for the 2014 Centre Stage New Play Festival!

There is NO FEE for submitting a script.

Submissions are open to any playwright or playwright’s representative.

The playwright is not required to have agent representation.

Submissions must meet the following criteria:

  • The play must be full length
  • No musicals will be accepted
  • The play must not have had a full production (previous readings and workshops are acceptable)
  • The play must not have been published
  • The play is limited to the use of 7 actors. If an actor is required to play multiple parts this doubling must be structurally relevant for the storytelling of the play. The use of an actor to play multiple parts cannot be implemented for the sole purpose of meeting the submissions criteria.

THE SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE IS MARCH 1ST, 2014.

To submit, fill out the online submission application form.

Once completed, email a pdf file of the script to npfsubmissions@centrestage.org. The title of the play must be in the pdf file name and in the subject line of the email.
Finalists will be notified the week of June 24, 2014.

Evaluations:

All entries that meet the submission criteria will be read and evaluated by at least two qualified script evaluators. Comments and scores from the evaluators will determine the scripts designated as semi-finalists. Semi-finalists will be read, scored and discussed by a select group of evaluators who will determine the three finalists to be presented at the 2014 Centre Stage New Play Festival.

New Play Festival Week:

Three scripts will be selected for readings. Professional directors are recruited to direct each reading. Open auditions are held for casting actors. After the reading is cast, three formal rehearsals are required prior to the staged reading at the Centre Stage New Play Festival.

The readings are staged with minimal technical support. No costumes, props, lighting specials or sound effects will be utilized. Actors are positioned at script stands to deliver the reading of the script.

Play Festival Participant Requirements:

Playwrights whose scripts are selected as finalists MUST ATTEND THE FULL WEEK of Centre Stage New Play Festival activities and presentations. Centre Stage will assist the playwright finalists with travel expenses and will provide hotel accommodations.

Professional feedback:

After the staged reading of their script, playwright finalists will receive feedback from qualified writers, academics and/or industry professionals. Participating audience members will complete score and comment sheets.

All comments and scores will be considered and a New Play Festival Winner will be declared on the final night of the Festival. The winning playwright will receive a monetary prize to encourage further development of their play and craft.

The dates of the 2014 Centre Stage New Play Festival are pending and will likely be announced in the New Year with the unveiling of our 2014-2015 season.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the New Play Festival Director, Melanie Ann Wiliford, at melanie.wiliford@centrestage.org.

We look forward to reading your submissions!
