web site

We are looking for a series of companion pieces, written by one playwright, that speak to the spirit of the holidays, however you define them. Do you have one or two one-acts that deal with the holidays? A series of short plays or ten minutes? Then we want to read them! Don't have the plays yet but you've got a great idea? We want to read your pitch! Any and all styles and genres are open for consideration, we just want the best possible story.

We're looking to put together an ensemble evening for two-four actors, but we're flexible on casting for the right idea.

Deadline: September 1, 2014

Editing is hard. Let us help.

“I have rewritten — often several times — every word I have ever published. My pencils outlast their erasers.” ― Vladimir Nabokov, Speak, Memory

As soon as you finish your last line of dialogue, the need for rewrites begins. THE REWRITE, a 10-week class at Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA) will begin by establishing writing goals to conquer over ten weeks. Whether you choose to embark on a rewrite of your entire play or focus on individual scenes, writing exercises and in-class discussion will inspire you to ask new questions of your play, look at it from various angles, and deconstruct it with your fellow writers.

THE REWRITE
Section A with KARA LEE CORTHRON (Writer, Julius By Design at Fulcrum Theater, "Kings" on NBC)

Wednesdays from 6:30pm – 9:30pm, beginning September 17

Section B with JOSH HECHT (Director, Christine Jorgensen Reveals at New World Stages)

Fringe Theatre Company seeks 10-minute plays about holidays

Attention political playwrights: Call For Entries Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest 2015

web site

The Castillo Theatre (NYC) sponsors the Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest and reading series bi-annually. In its seventh year, the political play contest is intended to encourage the writing of scripts for the stage that engage the political/social/cultural questions affecting the world today and/or historical events and issues that impact on our heritage.

While Castillo recognizes that in the broadest sense, all theatre is political, the contest is seeking politically progressive plays that: look at social and/or economic problems and challenges; explore possibilities of social transformation; and, reflect the concerns and interests of communities or which explore the importance of community. The contest also welcomes scripts that experiment with form and seek new ways of seeing and new ways of experiencing theatrical performance.

The plays submitted to the Fratti-Newman Political Play Contest may be written in any style, set in any historical time, geographic or imaginary location, contain any number of characters and be of any length. The plays must be in English and cannot be musicals or adaptations. No scripts will be considered that have previously been submitted to this contest, have received a production or won other contests. Only one script per playwright per year will be accepted.

The contest is judged by a team of distinguished theatre artists. The winning script(s) will receive a reading at the Castillo Theatre in New York City during the theatre’s 2015 summer season.

All scripts should be submitted in hard copy and must be accompanied by:
  • a statement of the political/social/cultural questions that the script engages (scripts with no accompanying statement will not be considered)
  • a brief synopsis
  • a character breakdown, including gender, age and ethnic requirements, if any
  • a 100-word biography of the playwright
  • a current email address

Please note:
Receipt of script will be acknowledged via email.
  • Scripts will not be returned.
  • Castillo does not give critical feedback to playwrights/contestants.
  • Contest winners are required to sign a letter of agreement, which will include, but not be limited to, granting the right for Castillo to produce one or more readings and/or a full production of the winning play.
  • Contest winners are responsible for travel expenses or any other expenses incurred as a result of participating in the development of the play with Castillo, or as a result of attending the reading and/or production.
All scripts must be postmarked by October 1, 2014. The winner(s) will be publicly announced at the Otto René Castillo Awards for Political Theatre in New York City in May of 2015.

Send all submissions to:

The Exit 7 New Short Play Contest

web site

Exit 7 Players is seeking submissions for The Exit 7 New Short Play Contest, performing in February 2015. The contest producers are Janine and Jeffrey Flood (co-producers, the LabWorks 15-Minute New Play Contest 2010-2013, Valley Repertory Company) and Rebecca Johnson (co-producer, Les Miserables, Exit 7 Players).

The Exit 7 New Short Play Contest will produce short plays by twelve playwrights in an exciting audience-participation format, awarding two winning writers a prize of $150 each.

Submission Process

You may submit either one or two plays. Please use the following process to enter the contest. Read all requirements carefully so as to be considered.

1. Format your script using no smaller than 12-point type. Use 1” margins on top, bottom, and sides. Please number your pages. (Click Sample Script Format to see a properly formatted page.)

2. Page one should start with the title of the play at the top of the page (as seen on the Sample Script Format). If you consider your play to be a comedy, please follow the title with “A Comedy”. If you do NOT consider your play to be a comedy, follow the title with “A Drama”. And yes, you must label your play as either one or the other.

3. Your play must be limited to 15 pages total. Any script 16 pages or longer will be rejected.

4. The plays we produce are chosen blind, so do not include ANY author information on the script itself. The contest Play Selection Committee does not see any playwrights’ names until the final selections for production have been made. Therefore, if you put your name on the script so that a member of the Committee sees it, it will be rejected. A company member who is not on the Play Selection Committee keeps the playwright contact info until the final 12 plays are selected for production.

5. Save your script(s) in .pdf format. You can submit your script(s) until Saturday, September 13th, 2014 via the form found in the link. Do not attempt to submit the script in any other format or to any other destination. Snail mail submissions are NOT being accepted.

Submission Restrictions

Please read the following carefully so that your script can be given due consideration:

1. Playwrights can submit 2 plays, but only 1 play per writer will be produced. Members of Exit 7 Players are eligible to submit to the contest, but if their script is chosen as one of the 12 semifinalists, they will be prohibited from working on the production of the contest in any capacity.

2. Scripts should require 2 to 5 actors. Please note that a play can include more than 5 characters, as long as they can be played by 2 to 5 actors. Scripts requiring more than 5 actors will be rejected.

3. We will not consider one-man or one-woman shows, musicals, or children’s theatre.

4. Entries must be original plays. Scripts may be co-authored, based on factual  material, or an adaptation. Legal clearance of materials not in the public domain is the full responsibility of the playwright.

5. We will consider unproduced works as well as plays that have been previously produced, so long as their first date of production was on, or after, June 15th of 2013.

6. Submissions are restricted to plays that have not been published in any form, and they must be royalty-free to Exit 7 for this contest.

7. We’re seeking plays, not skits or sketches. Plays should have a beginning, a middle, and an end (though not necessarily in that order) and feature character development. Above all, make the script compelling.

8. Exit 7 is a community theatre. If we foresee difficulty producing a play due to unusual script requirements, the play may be rejected.

9. While Exit 7 is a family-friendly theatre, adult content is acceptable. Profanity, if it is fully justified by the script and for the character, will not be cause for outright rejection; however, profanity is no replacement for good writing. We will reject any script that requires nudity.

10. Keep set, lighting, sound, costume, and prop requirements to a minimum. The contest will feature 6 plays per night, with quick changeovers. A script with complex technical requirements could lead to its rejection.

Play Selection Process and Contest Format

1. Plays which do not meet submission requirements will be disqualified. A play selection committee of five Exit 7 members will read those plays which meet the submission requirements.

2. The play reading committee will select 12 plays for competition: 6 comedies and 6 dramas. Six plays will be presented on the first semifinals night (3 dramas and 3 comedies) and six plays on the second (again, 3 dramas and 3 comedies).

3. An audience vote on each semifinals night will select the finalists—four dramas and four comedies. The audience of the finals night will select a winner in the drama category and a winner in the comedy category, who will receive a prize of $150 each. A detailed explanation of the performance format and of the audience voting system will be made available to the playwrights whose plays are chosen as semifinalists.

Additional Information
1. By submitting your script you are agreeing to the following:
a. You have read, understand, and agree to all of the contest rules and guidelines as detailed on Exit 7’s website.

b. You understand that Exit 7 reserves the right to change any contest rules as needed (but we will attempt to keep any such changes to a minimum).

c. You attest that your submission is an original piece, and that you are the author of said submission.

d. You attest that your play has not had a production prior to June 15, 2013.

e. You understand that Exit 7 reserves the right to reject any submission for reasons including, but not limited to, length, quality, content, or for otherwise not meeting submission requirements.

f. You give Exit 7 non-exclusive permission to perform your play as part of The Exit 7 New Short Play Contest free of any royalties, as well as to record any performance of your play for archival purposes (not for resale or profit).
2. No playwright revisions will be accepted once a script has been submitted; Exit 7 reserves the right to request changes to any script, but none will be made without playwright consent.

3. No written or oral critique will be given on plays submitted.

4. Exit 7 will post the names of the semifinalists and their plays on its website and Facebook page once the selections have been made.

5. We will promote your play, but you should too.

6. Complimentary tickets will be made available to participating playwrights; those playwrights will be informed of our comp policy at a future date.

7. Playwrights must agree to allow Exit 7 to record their plays for archival purposes (not for resale or profit). A DVD copy of your play only will be copied for all semifinalist playwrights. You may use the footage of your play for self-promotion purposes, e.g. on your own website, if desired.

A Final Note

We are expecting literally hundreds of submissions…so make your plays compelling from the very first line of dialogue!

Audiences will choose the two prize winning plays from only 12 semifinalists, so once you’re in the contest, your chances are pretty good…the tough part is getting a play into the semifinals. Write a great script that grabs us, makes us laugh or makes us think, or both. Good luck! Keep an eye out for announcements on exit7players.org, and “Like” Exit 7 Players Theater on Facebook.

Schwarzman Building (formerly the Humanities and Social Sciences Library). The Center looks for top-quality writing from academics as well as from creative writers and independent scholars. It aims to promote dynamic conversation about the humanities, social sciences, and scholarship at the very highest level — within the Center, in public forums throughout the Library, and in the Fellows’ published work.

Candidates who need to work primarily in The New York Public Library’s other research centers — The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the Science, Industry and Business Library — are not eligible for this fellowship.

In order to avoid real or apparent conflicts of interest, the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers does not accept applications from New York Public Library staff members or their partners, or from people active on the Library’s Board of Trustees, Board Advisory Committees, or Library Council.

Please visit www.nypl.org/research-collections for detailed information about the collections of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street.

Fellows are required to work at the Cullman Center, on the project for which they applied, for the duration of the fellowship term. Fellows may have a few prior brief commitments, but must limit research trips, attendance at scholarly meetings, and speaking engagements, and may not accept other major work obligations during the course of this fellowship. Anyone who needs to be away for more than two days must notify the Director or Deputy Director in advance. The Library will pro-rate stipends for Fellows who spend too much time away from the Center.

Fellowships will not be granted to post-doctoral fellows or to applicants doing graduate-school dissertation research.

Seven Dictators Guidelines:

-You can submit your work in two ways:

Or as: A theater-acting team, with the team/theater’s name, and the name of the team leader/representative.

Write a play with a three-act structure ranging from 20 to 35 pages using seven characters of dictators that existed/still exist in the 21st Century, in any possible theme you may wish to put/gather them in.

During the play, the playwright is free to be creative in any possible way (no limitations) to create their piece.

The playwright is allowed to add up to three more anonymous characters (not real existing people).

Strange Sun Theater, The Greenhouse Project seeks submissions

web site

The Strange Sun Greenhouse will be accepting play submissions from June 1 through September 15, 2014.

for the 2014 submission cycle: All submissions must be written by women, and the playwright must be amenable to a female director.

Strange Sun’s goal is to create magical theater, but we know that magic can be elusive, and often takes time and care to manifest. The Greenhouse was created to give theater artists the resources they need to coax the magic from their work, and nurture and grow the seeds of their artistic vision.

Part of our mission for creating exciting new theater is to bring the finest theater artists together with dynamic audiences to focus upon our shared humanity, releasing us from the ordinary and igniting us with the power of possibility. “Possibility” is an exciting word, one that theater artists engage with every time a writer sits down to a blank page, a director picks up a script for the first time, or an actor walks into their first rehearsal. It is ever-present when the lights dim and an audience takes the journey of a new play.

Our aim is to engage with artists throughout this entire process. Each 2 year Greenhouse cycle begins with a theme we feel can inspire dialogue amongst artist, audience and community. The Greenhouse will be open to submissions yearly, and throughout the course of each theatrical season we will be working with plays in different cycles of the Greenhouse process.

Endeavor Ensemble seeks full-length plays

No web site available.

Endeavor Ensemble is seeking full-length, unproduced new plays for a staged reading and potential full production during the 2014-2015 season.

Endeavor Ensemble strives to close the gap between the development and production of new work, using collaborative dramaturgical development that leads to a guaranteed full production, demonstrating our commitment to the playwrights whose work we select. We are also committed to collaborating with a diverse group of playwrights, actors, directors, and dramaturgs who are able to bring their varied experiences to the work.

We are interested in forming long-term partnerships with emerging playwrights who have strong perspectives, voices, and senses of humor; who are engaged with current events and social issues, both domestically and globally; and who make bold choices in their writing. This can be in the form of an entirely original story, or a new take on a well-known story.

While scripts should be complete drafts, they do not need to be performance-ready, as dramaturgical work is built into this process.

TO SUBMIT:
Please email your scripts as a PDF by August 15 to endeavor.ensemble@gmail.com and include a short bio with your contact info.

The Flux Salon - Now Accepting New Play Submissions

web site

The Flux Salon series based in Seattle is currently accepting new play submissions. The Salon is produced by Forward Flux Productions, an arts production company in NYC and Seattle who's mission is to present innovative projects that connect people with art in unexpected ways. Please find all the details below:

The Flux Salon is a new works series that offers play readings in living rooms and unconventional spaces throughout Seattle. It is an intimate evening of art and conversation for an invite-only crowd. We focus on presenting the best new plays from around the country that have rarely or never been seen. The readings are book-in-hand, and the playwrights have an opportunity to engage with the audience for a post-reading talk back (either in person, or via Skype).

What we are looking for:
We are seeking stellar, full-length, polished new works from fresh voices. Specifically seeking plays that speak to the right now (modern themes and settings preferred). The piece should be unknown to most audiences (no Seattle productions, although out-of-town, school, workshop, reading, or theatre festival productions are acceptable). Works by or featuring women and/or under-represented voices are strongly encouraged to submit. Please limit your submissions to plays that have 6 or fewer characters.

If Selected:
If chosen, your play will get a reading at one of our upcoming Salons in Seattle. It will be performed in front of influential Seattle arts patrons, and we will work with you to frame a helpful post-performance conversation so you can get the feedback you want from the audience (if desired). In addition, you will be offered a stipend of $100, with potential for your play to continue on for a full production with Forward Flux at a future date.

How to submit:
To submit, please send the following in an email to salon@forwardflux.com
- A one paragraph synopsis
- A brief bio
- Links to relevant reviews (if available)
- A character breakdown (remember: no more than 6 characters please)
- The script in PDF format

We will respond within 3 months.

The Hive Theatre company is seeking submissions for its 2015 Hive Exposed Series

web site

Hive Exposed Series 2015

The goal of the Hive Exposed series is to present staged readings of new and underexposed playwrights and to share the work of those playwrights with the NYC community.

Of all the submissions, The Hive will choose four plays (musicals also accepted) to stage as readings in winter/spring of 2015. Our goal is to choose one of the four selected pieces to later be mounted as a full production.

The Hive is deeply committed to nurturing artists of all ages, type, and background.

2013’s Exposed reading of A Brief History of the Soviet Union by Vladimir Zelevinsky was mounted as part of our 2014 Season. From 2014’s Exposed Series, we plan to produce The Accidental Death of Nelson Fritz by Noah Schechter as part of our 2015 season.

The Hive’s Mission:

DEVISE through collaboration with an emphasis on experimentation. EXPOSE what must be said for those who won’t say it and for those who refuse to hear it. ILLUMINATE our fears because the truth is what scares us the most.

We are committed to:

- Producing original works created from the ground up by the full company, reinventing the classics, and fostering the work of new and underexposed playwrights.

- Providing affordable productions that engage audiences as participants in an immersive theatrical event rather than simply spectators

- Nurturing artists in and around the NYC metro area

- Continuing to demonstrate how theater raises social awareness

- Reaching out to artists, audiences and sponsors in order to enrich and expand our community.

Hive Exposed Series Submission Guidelines:

- The deadline for submissions is August 15, 2014

- If you are submitting a musical for consideration, please send up to 3 songs from the musical in mp3 format to literary.submissions.thehive@gmail.com. Include your name and the title of the musical in the subject line. You must still complete the form and upload the script via the website as requested above. The Acadiana Repertory Theatre is a small ensemble in Lafayette, Louisiana that is committed to producing and developing new works, and working hand in hand with playwrights to assist them in whatever stage of development their show might be in.

We are open to new show ideas as well, even if the show is not written yet but you are interested in writing an adaptation for us.

- Be received by August 15th, 2014

Diez Minutos 2015 seeks 10-minute plays

No web site available

Diez Minutos Productions is seeking plays for its Third Annual International 10-Minute Play Festival. This fully-staged festival will be in English, and will take place in late March of 2015 in the international arts center of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico — a World Heritage Site brimming with charm, history, and culture. San Miguel was voted Conde Nast Traveler Magazine 2013 "Best City in the World.”

There is no fee for submitting.

Each playwright whose script is selected and performed will receive a $10 USD cash honorarium and two complimentary tickets to the production. One play will be selected as the Audience Favorite and its playwright shall receive an additional $25 USD cash award.  No other remuneration will be provided, and any playwright attending must do so at his or her own expense.

Submission Guidelines
Diez Minutos Productions may delete, without reading, any submission that does not comply with these rules.

Only one play may be submitted per entrant. Send us your best!

Only the first 100 plays entered are guaranteed to be considered.

We’re asking for blind submissions this year.

The play may be a drama or comedy and must be on the theme of LOST IN TRANSLATION.

No musicals or children’s plays, please.

The play must be submitted by email, as an attached PDF file. No MS Word files or other formats will be accepted. The subject line of your email should include your name and the title of the play.

The submission shall include all contact information for the playwright, including name, address, telephone number and email address on a separate title page; the script must be in standard play format, with a title page, a character listing, the setting, props, and any technical requirements or other production considerations.  Your name must not appear on the script. The two files should be titled "Submission [Name Of Play]” and "Title Page [Name Of Play].”

The play must be in English and no longer than 10 pages in standard format, with a calculated running time of no less than eight minutes and no more than twelve minutes.

Submission period opens on August 18, 2014.

Entries must be received prior to midnight U.S. Central Standard Time, September 30, 2014. No late submissions will be accepted because of transmission problems.

The play must be unpublished, but may have had previous productions. If the play has had previous productions, a production history must be included with the submission. The submitting playwright must own all rights to the play.

Selection of plays will be at the absolute discretion of the judges.

Selection of a play does not guarantee production. Producers may decline to produce a selected play because of casting, directing or any other consideration, in which case no payment will be due the playwright.

Selected entrants will receive a list of the festival scripts by email. Notification is expected to be made no later than January 15, 2015. Only playwrights whose plays were received in the first 100 submitted will be notified. Producers reserve the right to consider additional plays not received in the first 100.

Scripts must relate to the theme but are not otherwise limited in subject matter or content. However, there must be no nudity, and suitability for performance before a general adult audience will be a factor in selection.

Plays are restricted to 5 or fewer characters. Small casts are preferable, as the stage size is modest, with minimal set, props, sound cues, and costuming. Our talent pool is composed mostly of actors over 40. This will be a factor in selection.

By making the submission the entering playwright grants the producers of Diez Minutos permission to perform the play a maximum of ten times during the Diez Minutos 2015 festival, and to make as many copies of the script as are necessary for production.  All other rights remain with the playwright.

Submitting Your Play
Please address your submission to: diezminutosfestival@yahoo.com. Any inquiries should be sent to the same address.

Saludos,
Mark Saunders & Michael Hager

Applications for the 2015 New York Children's Theater Festival will be accepted July 7 to August 18, 2013. To submit your show, download the Application and Application Instructions for a step by step guide.

The Submission Process

The New York Children's Theater Festival has eliminated all Submission Fees for the 2015 Season in order to better serve our mission and our artists!

When you submit to the New York Children's Theater Festival, your work is adjudicated by a panel of Children's Theater experts. The entire process is anonymous and extensive, and helps The New York Children's Theater Festival choose the final works that will be presented each spring!

In an effort to assist the artists in development, the Festival also provides feedback from adjudicators to the top 20 finalists who are not chosen to participate this year. We hope that this important professional feedback is helpful in introducing interesting avenues of creative development for your work!

All artists who submit for the 2015 Festival Season will also receive notices and information on our TYA fall symposium series! Good luck!

Asylum Theatre seeks plays

web site

The Asylum Theatre in Las Vegas is looking for scripts for its 2014-15 season.

We produce 2-3 staged readings and 1-2 full productions of contemporary new work. Playwrights whose work is chosen MUST travel to attend the performance and observe the post show discussion of the play (if applicable).

The Asylum offers travel and accommodation, or a stipend toward the travel expense in exchange for permission to development and/or production of the project. The length of stay in Vegas depends upon the arrangements made with the company.
Play genre, length and cast size are not a factor in the decision-making process, though we are hoping to offer at least one comedy in our upcoming season if the right script comes our way. If your play has been previously produced it may still be considered for production, as long as it has not been done on Broadway or Off-Broadway.

The Asylum is is committed to making sure that innovative theatre happens in Vegas, but doesn't stay in Vegas. Our aim is to find asylum for progressive work in the theatre in as many places as possible by strengthening the fellowship between venues across the country, and individual artists looking to introduce their work to new audiences.

SUBMISSIONS ARE BY EMAIL ONLY. We hope to have our season decided by August 15, 2014.

Send your scripts to: info@asylumtheatre.org with the subject line showing: SCRIPT - "Play Title'
