Rover Dramawerks announces our second annual playwriting contest - ROVER SECONDS!

We are seeking FULL-LENGTH comedies or farces that have received ONE full production to be a part of our Sixteenth Season.
  • Submissions will be accepted from March 20 to April 20
  • Only the first 150 full-length plays will be accepted. 
  • Comedies or farces only! No musicals or dramas. 
  • Plays must have been produced ONCE previously but not in the DFW Metroplex. 
  • Plays may not be published. 
  • Playwrights may submit only one full-length play of at least 60 pages. 
  • A cast list and brief synopsis must be included. 
  • Only PDF files will be accepted. 
  • Name and contact info must not appear anywhere on the script (i.e. this is a blind submission process).

One full-length play will receive a cash prize of $500 and a full production in Rover Dramawerks’ Sixteenth Season. (No fee.)

The judges reserve the right not to award prizes or productions if they feel the caliber of plays received does not warrant a winner.

Landmark 2015 seeks 10-minute plays

We are seeking new shorts scripts for our annual Landmark Festival. This year’s theme (to which submitted scripts should be related) is “Insider/Outsider” Scripts should be about 10 minutes long and not yet produced in Chicago. Selected scripts will be produced in the fall of 2015.

Please include a cover letter indicating your level of interest in participating in script development sessions in advance of the festival (note: not being interested/available for script development will not affect a script’s eligibility to be produced as part of the festival).

Our season theme is “Insider/Outsider”. This is a theme that applies in several different ways to the shows we’ll be producing this season – so don’t feel as though you need to take the prompt literally. 

We strive for a variety of tones, styles, and tempos throughout the festival – comedy is just as welcome as tragedy. 

Also keep our mission in mind as you are writing:
The Past is Prologue. We produce new and forgotten works from underrepresented voices. In this way, we relate the experiences of yesterday with the lives of today.

Kitchen Theatre Company Play Submission Guidelines

Kitchen Theatre Company (KTC) primarily finds new plays through submissions by agents and recommendations by directors who have worked at the KTC. However, unsolicited plays are accepted on a rolling basis. Keep in mind that unsolicited plays may take up to ten months to be read.

KTC is committed to contributing to the field of American theater by producing new plays. KTC seeks plays that complement our mission of creating bold, intimate, and engaging theater. Playwrights will be contacted once KTC has received their play and again only if their play is selected for production. Due to the high volume of play submissions that the theatre receives, KTC is unable to contact every playwright when their play is not selected to be produced. Please do not e-mail or call the theatre with inquiries about a submission.

Submission Guidelines
KTC is highly unlikely to produce a play with more than 5 characters and more likely to produce a play with 4 or fewer characters. Plays with more than 6 characters will not be considered.

KTC does not accept one act plays unless they are full-length in run time (seventy-five to ninety minutes).

KTC does accept musicals on the condition that they meet the above character count and run time rules. Submit with 3 recorded songs and a complete piano score with lyrics.

Plays from international playwrights are accepted and encouraged. However, the plays must be written in English or have been translated into English.

Please submit only one play to KTC within an 18-month period.

To submit a play for consideration, download and complete the application and send it along with the first ten pages of the play (cover page and character outline is not included in this ten page count) and a FULL BUT CONCISE synopsis in PDF format (no Word documents) to submissions@kitchentheatre.org. Please do not mail submissions. KTC is a green theater and likes to go as paperless as possible.

LeaseLab invites playwrights to work collaboratively

Program Overview

OYL's LeaseLab invites playwrights from the US and abroad to work collaboratively with the OYL Artistic ensemble in the creation of new work. Collectively we take broad theatrical concepts from very early development to final draft stage. LeaseLab is a a phased process over twelve months, comprising of a series of workshops and usually involving three script drafts.

The primary goal of LeaseLab is to give playwrights the opportunity to develop work collaboratively alongside the OYL ensemble with the intention of a world premiere in New York City.

LeaseLab is a professional development program and selected playwrights receive a commission fee and workshop stipend.

As of 2014, LeaseLab is built around a concept provided by OYL on which playwrights are invited to collaborate with us to create a new work.

Selection Criteria

There are three aesthetic considerations we look for in submitted work. 1) Does the writing explore the idea of 'collective storytelling' in some way? 2) Is the writing open enough to allow for physcial expression through movement/dance? 3) Does the writing exhibit non-conventional playwriting structure? (for example written without scene headings, character names, stage directions). These are explained in more detail below:

1. Collective Storytelling.

We are interested in stories told from a group or shared perspective, in whatever form this may take.

We are an ensemble company - artists who work together consistently over long periods - and through this form we have found a reflection in approaching work from the perspective of a collective consciousness.

We seek to draw audiences into the experience as a participant, an accomplice, a part of the group, as culpable.

Theatrically a Greek chorus is defined, in part, as a collective voice contextualized by each individual participant's different experience of the shared event. We draw on this ancient principle as we modernize the chorus into a contemporary form.

2. Movement/Dance

As a highly physical company with a strong focus on movement, and with a resident movement director, we are espectially interested in writing that is open to this kind of expression. Successful submissions will undergo a rigorous physical exploration as the first step in their development. Writing that explores unique and magical worlds is strongly encouraged.

3. Structure

We are drawn to writing that explores unconventional structure, possibly as straight prose without scene headings, character names, stage directions (but still written specifically for the stage). We weight non-linear story-telling heavily in our selection process

Submission Requirements

International and US-based playwrights with and without professional credits are invited to submit works-in-progress in the form of treatments, monologue/s, a handful of scenes or first drafts of original work that connects to the aesthetic considerations above. Invitations to participate in LeaseLab are based wholly on the quality of the work submitted. Early drafts are encouraged.

OYL provides for all workshop-related costs, but does not provide airfare, housing (if required) or meals for playwrights during workshop periods. OYL will make every attempt to work with each selected playwright to find funding for such costs.

The Process
  • Each LeaseLab development process is unique to the selected playwright’s personality, style of writing and submitted material.
  • On selection, the playwright and OYL artistic staff begin a dialogue to define the process to be undertaken to ensure all parties understand and agree to unique and specific parameters.
  • The LeaseLab is designed to challenge playwrights to reach beyond their comfort zone, work quickly and respond to the input of the OYL collaborators. However within the collaborative structure, it is OYL’s primary focus to ensure a safe environment for the playwright that assists their creative process, without undue pressure.
  • In the early stages of the workshop, the process is reading and discussion-based, with new material being tested on a daily basis
  • When the playwright’s work is ready, basic staging is applied and ongoing group dialogue scheduled into the workday
  • Playwrights are given a draft series of minor deadlines at the outset of the workshop, which may shift according to how the work develops
  • The workshop concludes with three workshop performances, with basic staging applied for invited audiences. Audiences are encouraged to take part in post-performance feedback discussions with the cast, OYL artistic staff and the playwright
  • Workshop rehearsals continue on the days between performances.

Theatre Southwest Festival of Originals

Submissions for the Theatre Southwest Festival of Originals are being accepted now thru April 1, 2015.

Five twenty-minute plays will be chosen to play simultaneously. There will be five separate directors and five separate casts. These are not staged readings, but fully produced plays. Plays chosen will show a diverse selection of theatre. There are no prohibited subjects or themes - light comedies, satires, dark comedies, dramas, mysteries, thrillers, etc. are all welcome.

Below are the submission guidelines:
  • Playwrights may submit up to 2 plays for consideration. 
  • All entries should be UNPUBLISHED material. 
  • All entries may NOT have been PRODUCED within a 100 mile radius of Houston, Texas. 
  • All Genres are accepted (Comedies are encouraged). 
  • Monologues or one actor/character plays are NOT accepted. 
  • Plays should be 20 minutes in length (give or take a minute or two). 
  • While there is no maximum limit as to cast size or set requirements, COMMON SENSE should be used, keeping in mind that five different plays will be produced in one night. 
  • Number all pages of the scripts. 
  • Hard copies of scripts must be submitted by U.S. Postal mail ONLY. Emailed PDF files will not be considered. 
  • Scripts should be bound either in a folder with brads, or by the use of a single staple in the upper left hand corner. 
  • Please use Times New Roman, Courier or Arial fonts. 
  • Be sure to include ALL contact information (phone number, email address, and physical address) on the title page of the script. 
  • Include a list of all characters in the play, with a brief character description. 
  • Include a one paragraph summary of the play. 
  • Scripts can not be returned. 
One hundred dollars will be awarded to ALL selected playwrights.

FADE TO BLACK PLAY FESTIVAL seeks 10-minute plays

Script submissions will be accepted from Sunday, February 1, 2015 until Wednesday, April 1, 2015.

The theme and subject matters of the work is open to the playwright's imagination.
Local Houston directors and actors are encouraged to participate.
Selected playwrights will be contacted no later than Friday, May 1, 2015.
There is no fee to submit.

Winner will be awarded a cash prize of $100.00.
  • To qualify for consideration, the scripts must conform to the following guidelines:

Lakes Area Radio Theatre radio play submission guidelines

Lakes Area Radio Theatre accepts script submissions from writers. Your original radio plays can be in any genre. Please see below for further guidelines regarding scripts.

Format Your script must be in a radio play format which differs from stage plays and screenplays. There are no stage directions, visual cues, lighting directions. The scripts should include easily discernible audio cues such as dialogue, sound effects (sfx), and music cues. Number the pages and number the lines starting over with 1 on each page for the lines.

Content We ask that content be suitable for all ages and family friendly. If you include innuendo and/or adult humor, please keep in mind some “children’s shows” which appealed to adults as well: Rocky and Bullwinkle, Fractured Fairytales, and the like. We broadcast our shows on a growing network of radio stations.

Length Lakes Area Radio Theatre has a 30 minute broadcast space to fill every other week. Plays can be 29-31 minutes in length. Script lengths are in the range of 5000 +/- words.
We will accept scripts for single shows
We will accept scripts that would run for 2 installments
We will accept a series of shorter plays which fill 30 minutes

Fame Not Fortune We pay a royalty fee of $30 per half hour of entertainment. This is based on input from radio script playwrights from around the USA as well as a BBC radio script writer.

Royalty Agreement If we accept and use your script, we will send you a writer’s agreement. This agreement will grant us the right to produce the script; it will grant us the right to reproduce as many copies of the script as needed to produce the script; it will grant us the broadcasting and rebroadcasting rights to the taped production (radio and podcasts); the writer retains all rights to their original and/or adapted work.

Return Policy We may not take the opportunity to use your script. There could be a number of reasons for this such as its length, content not deemed suitable for our audience, or just that we believe it needs more work. We will try to give feedback so that writers can edit and resubmit their work.

Script Submission We accept hard copies and electronic copies of scripts. Electronic copies are preferred.

SEEKING SUBMISSIONS- NEW WORKS AND WRITERS FOR UNMASKED THEATRE COMPANY, a non-profit musical theatre company for social change.

Who should submit?

Both established and emerging writers with passion, drive, and commitment. We are seeking works fully or nearly at completion to be workshopped and produced in October, Fall 2015. We are also seeking an playwright in residence to work with us on further developing past works and continuing to develop new work.

What should I submit?

Any and all content that fits our mission statement:
Unmasked Theatre Company's current focus and mission is to de-stigmatize mental illness in our society. Unmasked uses musical theatre to promote social change as we believe the added elements of song and dance in musical theatre can reach people on a different and unique emotional level. We will utilize this to create discussion between people on their individual opinions, which will eventually expand to changing societal opinions on pivotal issues. The particular issues Unmasked will address are gender inequality, mental illness stigma, and class/racial inequality and mobility.

What materials should I submit?

1. A cover letter introducing yourself and the piece, complete with name, phone number, and email address.
2. A complete script of the piece
3. A demo of the score (if it is a musical)
4. If interested in the playwright in residence position- please also submit a resume and 2 references with contact information.

Moonlit Wings seeks plays for young audiences

PLAYWRIGHTS - Seeking Scripts: Summer Season 2015 Open to Submissions!!

Moonlit Wings Pro, celebrated entertainment production in the National Capitol Area & beyond, is accepting play and musical script submissions for our professional Performing Arts Camp for youth ages 7-14. Selected scripts will be workshopped and produced this summer by a DC creative team & playwrights will receive a production review with materials.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

-Plays or Musicals (straight plays are fine, although we will ask to work music into your play)

-Runtime: 20-40 minutes (hour long scripts may be submitted but we will ask to make necessary cuts)

-LARGE cast, 15 minimum - 35 maximum, ensemble shows preferred, female driven or gender neutral casts encouraged

-Material suitable to be performed by talent ages 7-14

Our theme this year is: "Season VIII: ‘GREAT 8: Championing our greatest qualities that make us unique " and we are especially seeking stories about embracing our differences and celebrating our similarities.

ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION:

Since 2008, MWP has mounted over 40 world-premieres of new theatre-for-youth workshop productions every summer. This summer we are selecting 4 brand-new shows to workshop and produce. Each show rehearses for a 2-week session with a professional director, choreographer, & tech director/stage manager and concludes with a public performance at the end of each session. Playwrights are given a thorough production review from the creative team and the chance to debut and promote their work with our leading youth arts organization. McKinney Repertory Theatre (MRT) 5th Annual MRT New Play Competition

McKinney Repertory Theatre (MRT) is pleased to announce The 5th Annual MRT New Play Competition. MRT is committed to providing quality entertainment for the community, through cultural education and inspiration. We will begin our 13th season in the Fall of 2015 and would like to encourage new playwrights to share their inspirations and hard work with us. MRT offers the competition winner the chance to see the playwright’s work fully realized on stage, and we hope that the winning play will go on to numerous productions elsewhere as well.

Prize: An MRT committee will choose one play as the winner to fully produce during our 2015-2016 Season. The winner will be announced on or before July 31st, 2015.

Guidelines:

1. Entries must be emailed in PDF format, no later than March 31, 2015.

2. Entries must be accompanied by a completed and signed and legible entry form.

3. Only original, full length, unpublished scripts will be accepted.

4. Plays must not have been previously produced nor have won awards.
However, previous stage and readings are acceptable.

5. Adaptations, translations, musicals and children’s plays will not be accepted.

6. Only one submission per playwright will be accepted. In the case of multiple
submissions, only the play determined by the committee to be the first
submission will be considered.

7. Casts of eight or fewer are preferred, with adult casts being preferred.
Please keep in mind that MRT is a family oriented theater company, so explicit
language, graphic violence, and so forth will eliminate the play for consideration.

The Franklin Furnace Fund Application 2015-2016

The Franklin Furnace Fund awards grants annually to emerging artists to enable them to produce major performance art works in New York. Grants range between $2,000 and $10,000 based on the peer review panel allocation of funding received by Franklin Furnace.

Franklin Furnace has no curator; each year a new panel of artists reviews all proposals. We believe this peer panel system allows all kinds of artists from all over the world an equal shot at presenting their work. Artists from all areas of the world are encouraged to apply; however, artists selected by the panel are expected to present their work in New York. Full-time students are ineligible.

The Franklin Furnace Fund 2015-2016 is supported by Jerome Foundation, The SHS Foundation, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and by general operating support from the New York State Council on the Arts. Artists supported by funding from Jerome Foundation must live in the five boroughs of New York City.

Exquisite Corpse Company is seeking playwrights for its 2015 Writers’ Lab

The Lab is designed to create a safe space for playwrights to come together, experiment, and inspire each other to create new and refreshing work that departs from what we might be more inclined to write on our own. The Lab will be led by ECC Artistic Director, Tess Howsam and Literary Director, Blake Bishton.

We will meet twice a week for the duration of April.
After voting and agreeing on a theme that gets everyone's creative juices flowing at the initial meeting, writers will then begin to both receive and submit prompts that the group will use as jumping off points for the work they create. All writers will be expected to produce approximately 10 pages of work a week. The goal is for every writer to have a draft of a new short one-act play by the end of the process.

At the conclusion of the lab, ECC will produce a public reading of each play as part of ECC's Drinks and Drama Reading Series, to take place in May. This series will feature a different Brooklyn bar as a setting for each reading!

PLAYWRITING GUIDELINES

We encourage emerging playwrights to apply at the beginning of their careers so that through the New Dramatists Fellowship, they can develop their work as well as benefit from being a part of a unique, diverse, dynamic community of professional playwrights. An applicant’s status as an emerging playwright is evaluated during the adjudication process.

One playwright will be selected to receive:
• A grant in the amount of $7,500
• A one-season (September – June) artistic residency at New Dramatists, Inc. in New York City (For Award recipients living outside of the New York metro area, your on-site residency can be adapted according to your schedule with reimbursement provided for transportation costs to/from New York)
• Inclusion of your script in New Dramatists’ library
• Advocacy for the recipient and their script to New York and National theatre communities for the duration of the fellowship
• Mentorship from a New Dramatists resident playwright for the duration of the fellowship
• Opportunity for winning play to be licensed and published by Samuel French, Inc.

Guidelines:
• All candidates must be United States citizens or have permanent resident status.

• Eligible playwrights must not have had any professional full-length productions other than those using the showcase code or in an off-off-Broadway theater with 99 or fewer seats.

(If your show used a higher contract tier than the showcase code, you are not eligible to apply. If your show received a festival production in a theater with more than 99 seats and did not use an Equity contract, you are eligible to apply.)

Development opportunities such as readings and workshops are admissible.

You must submit one unpublished, full-length play (A full-length play is a single play that constitutes a full evening of theater. For example, a 90-minute intermissionless play is a full-length play.)
• There is no restriction on subject matter
• Story, language, and characters must be original; no adaptations.
• May not have received a professional production as defined above

Sisters in the System is an immersive theatre piece about two girls navigating juvenile court, addressing issues of sibling separation, court appearances, reunification, and group home placement. Tori Rice interviewed students, judges, CASAs, attorneys, social workers, family members and many others. The resulting play is a fictionalized account of those interviews, offering a 360 view into the almost comical complexity and confusion encountered by juveniles in the foster care and court systems. The play was originally produced with great success last summer in the mock courtroom at Cal Western School of Law.

This is the third year of collaboration between Playwrights Project and SDSU, bringing two departments together at the University (Theatre, Television and Film and Guardian Scholars) through Playwrights Project’s programTelling Stories. Adapting the play to a university theatre setting provides an opportunity for students in different departments to collaborate and build empathy as the students (on stage and in the audience) learn about the challenges faced by college students who have had to navigate a "system."

Playwrights Project is a nonprofit corporation advancing literacy, creativity and communication by empowering individuals to voice their stories through playwriting programs and theatre productions.

The SDSU School of Theatre, Television, and Film provides high quality education for undergraduate and graduate students that emphasizes excellence in the arts and technology, grounded in conceptual and historical foundations.

The SDSU Guardian Scholars Program assists previous foster youth, wards of the court, students under legal guardianship, and unaccompanied homeless youth by providing a comprehensive, highly supportive program to help them earn a college degree.

Slingshot New Works Series Season 2 Episode 2: 'Sci-fi'!

The Slingshot New Works Series is proud to announce that we are officially OPEN for submissions for Season 2 Episode 2: 'Sci-fi'! We are looking for short plays that are sci-fi themed for an evening of high-quality staged readings in May at the Spitfire in Seattle.

Submission guidelines are as follows
--please be sure to follow all criteria in order to have your play considered!
1. All scripts must feature a “sci-fi” theme/element-
 ...how you interpret that is up to you!
2. All scripts must be 20 pages or less (no min. page count), not counting your title/character breakdown page. 

3. All scripts must be your own original work (parodies are great, not plagiarism.)

4. All scripts must be unpublished and previously unperformed--we're all about totally new works here at The Slingshot New Works Series.

5. All scripts must be blinded - be sure to remove your name from any part of your script (title page, page margins, and file extension alike) and submit them alongside a separate document containing your name and contact info.
- Any plays that are not blinded will be automatically disqualified.
- You will retain all copyright to any work you send us- but the reading committee will only be given the blinded scripts, in order to assure no internal biases or unfair advantages.

Chagrin Valley Little Theatre 10-10 Festival

CVLT began the biennial 10-10 Festival in 2009, putting out the call for short plays to be performed at its River Street Playhouse, the smaller venue adjacent to the main theater building. Ten plays would be chosen, each lasting roughly ten minutes. The first 10-10 that July was a resounding success, receiving submissions from all over Northeast Ohio and beyond. The second and third editions were equally a hit. Now The 10-10 is back for its fourth edition!

Play Submission Guidelines

The play selection team is now accepting script submissions for consideration! If your submission is chosen, your play will be performed tentatively in July 2015, at the River Street Playhouse a "black box" environment which seats approximately 65 patrons. 

Playwrights whose scripts are chosen will be contacted early in 2015.
Plays must be postmarked/emailed no later than April 1, 2015.
You must be 18 years or older to submit a script.
Scripts must be complete. Scenes from a full-length production or from other works cannot be accepted.
Your show should have an estimated production "running time" of 10-12 minutes.
Your script must be original – CVLT will not accept responsibility for copyright violations.
Please include a cover page which details your contact information - ensure all contact information is current.
Please do not include your name on any pages beyond the title page, as our committee will be reading the plays 'blind'.
You may submit no more than 2 scripts under your authorship.
CVLT reserves the right to choose directors for each play. You may not direct your own production.
CVLT cannot compensate you for your submission, nor will you receive compensation if your script is chosen for production.

17TH ANNUAL NEW PLAY CONTEST Theatre Conspiracy will be accepting submissions for its Seventeenth Annual New Play Contest between November 2014 and March 30, 2015. All works submitted will be read and judged by a panel of qualified theatre teachers, directors and performers.

Script Parameters: Work submitted to the contest must be a full length play with seven actors or less and have simple to moderate technical demands. Plays having up to three previous productions are welcome. No musicals, we are a tone deaf theatre company!.

Mainstage Series

Pride Films and Plays is seeking plays with lesbian characters, situations, or themes. Preferred cast size of 1-6 for production in an intimate space - Mary's Attic in Andersonville, Chicago, for example. Both new and previously produced plays will be accepted, though we prefer works that have not been previously produced in Chicago.

LezPlay Contest

LezPlay enhances the visibility and advances the viability of women who write plays. LezPlay not only advocates for more dyke drama; it honors excellence in scripts written by women in which lesbian characters and themes - past, present, and future - play a pivotal role.

We're on the lookout for new work, specifically Sapphic-centric narratives with a positive outlook. We want stories that elevate and celebrate us, refine and redefine us. We want to introduce audiences to women whose writing reflects, resonates with, and is relevant to their lives. We want stories that have a broad appeal, stories that will enable us to reach individuals of all ages and in all stages of life. And we want audiences to have a gay old time.

We are seeking scripts from women of all stripes and types: the lesbophile, the boi next door, the good-bi girl. Regardless of how you identify (or ident-defy) and even if your identity is not queer-cut, if your script puts the "out " in outstanding, then make a play for our attention.

From March 15 to May 1, we welcome submissions of short and full-length scripts from women. Only scripts that have not been professionally produced are eligible.

Scripts will be judged by a panel of industry professionals. Past judges include Fawzia Mirza, Kelli Simpkins, Ali Hoefnagel, Angela Alise Johnson, Tara Mallen, Rebecca Kling, and Carolyn Gage.

Up to five finalists will be selected in each category (Full-Length Plays and Short Scripts). The scripts that receive the highest recommendation from our reading panel, and that best align with the mission of LezPlay, will be presented as staged readings during LezPlay Weekend, which will take place in Chicago September 11-13. Writers whose work is selected for presentation will earn a cash prize ($400 for full-length scripts, $100 for shorts). In addition, LezPlay finalists in the Full-Length Plays category automatically receive production consideration for the Mainstage Series.

To enter LezPlay, you will need to complete the online entry form at FilmFreeway (https://filmfreeway.com/festival/LezPlay) and also submit your script (with NO identifying information on it) to LezPlay Literary Manager Allison Fradkin at PrideWomen@gmail.com. Entry fee is $10 if script is received by March 31. Entry fee is $20 if script is received by April 15. Entry fee is $30 if script is received by May 1. To make the final deadline, scripts must be received by 11:59 pm Central Time on May 1, 2015.

Vignettes for the Apocalypse

Award-winning company, EndTimes Productions, is now accepting submissions for its 7th Edition of Vignettes for the Apocalypse, New York’s oldest and largest Sci-fi/Horror themed theater festival. 

This year’s program will consist of two full-length plays, and three short play collections, to be presented at The Times Square Arts Center, Stage 2, 6/8-6/21, 2015. 

All submissions should fall within the horror, suspense, or sci-fi genre. 

The festival awards “The Serlings”, are determined by popular vote, with the author of the winning short play receiving $200. 

The author of each full-length will receive a $100 honorarium. 

Because we generally choose one comedy and one drama from amongst the full-lengths, awards are not given in the full-length category. 

We are also accepting radio plays for the launch of a horror/sci-fi themed podcast, to coincide with the festival.

THE SEVEN is one of the nation's premiere short works festivals.  It features seven fully produced world-premieres, utilizing seven different directors and a professional ensemble cast.  The scripts are read by a jury of theatre professionals (blindly, without any identification of the playwright) and the seven highest scoring scripts will be produced.  The overall Jury Award-winner will receive transportation to and lodging at the festival.  The Audience Choice Award-winner will be announced on June 15.

READ BEFORE SUBMITTING!

- Scripts must be based on the theme:  "UNFINISHED BUSINESS".  All theatrical genres are acceptable (drama, comedy, musical, monologues, etc.). 
- Do not use the phrase: "unfinished business" in the script.
- Scripts may be a maximum of 10 pages, in standard playwriting formats.  For digital submissions, only .pdf, .doc and .docx file formats will be accepted.
- THE SEVEN is comprised of world premiere productions.  The script must never have been produced before June 4th, 2015 in order to be accepted.  Scripts that have received public readings only ARE eligible. 
- Scripts must be submitted with:  1. A title page with all playwright contact information, 

2. A title page with only the title of the play.  These should be included as a part of the document file.  These pages do not count against the 10 page script maximum.

- The preferred method of submission is digital, and the process can be accessed below.  There is a $5.00 US submission fee to do so.

Submission Call from Theatre Nova in Ann Arbor

Theatre Nova in Ann Arbor, Michigan is a brand new, 501C3 non profit theatre launching its first season this year. We focus on new works and most of our season is filled, but another part of our mission is to produce playwrights of color that write stories for actors of color in non-stereotypical roles. This means we do not want to read another play about segregation in the 1960's or another play about Cesar Chavez or another play about 911. We do NOT want actors of color playing drug dealers, criminals, terrorists or slaves. Consider ways in which we can present the experiences of people of color in a way that is universal and speaks about the human condition more than stereotypes or historical conflicts. LGBT characters are greatly appreciated as well. 

For this particular submission, we are accepting full-length plays from writers of color (male or female) with strong, three dimensional roles for actors of color (though there can be white characters in the play as well).  Think of Gina Rodriguez's golden globe speech "This award represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes." Because we are a new theatre, we can have no more than 5 characters in the cast.

Cupcake Lady Productions seeks bad plays


Send us the best of your worst work! Dig through the trash and find the most terrible play you have every written. We want the most absurd, out of context, inconsistent pieces of theater possible. Clunky dialogue, offensive language without redeeming value, and wildly implausible scenarios are all pluses.

Send us one of the short plays – or an inexplicable scene from a longer play – that you scrapped ages ago (10 minutes or less), or come up with something awful right now.

Come to the show: we will be performing the five (5) finalists, which we will officially announce that night! Our carefully selected judges and an audience poll will rate the plays, and we’ll award the winner (loser?) with a very special PRIZE at the end of the night!

Four Quarter Theater seeks 10-minute plays

Four Quarter Theater involves theatrical writers, directors, and actors in collaboration to develop and to workshop previously unproduced ten-minute works in NYC. In each quarter of the year, and aligning with the seasons, Four Quarter Theater aims to produce a new set of ten-minute works. Each season is framed around a theme, which relates to the season in which the quarter falls.

Four Quarters Theater is currently accepting 10 minute plays for Four Quarter Theater’s upcoming play series. The theme for our upcoming Spring series is ALLERGIES. The theme is open to artistic interpretation and is provided as a thematic framework to guide the playwright. Below please find our submission requirements and additional guidance to successfully submit your piece to Four Quarter Theater. We are currently accepting submissions until April 1, 2015.

Submission Requirements

 Only original and never before produced plays are eligible for consideration.
 The play must be presentable in ten minutes (generally between seven to ten pages of dialogue).
 Cast should not exceed 5 actors.
 The performance will be held mid-May to mid-June at a theater space in Manhattan. Selected playwrights are encouraged to attend performances.
 There is a submission limit of three plays. Plays not chosen for this quarter may be considered for future series if considered by the company to be theme appropriate.
 Please do not submit first drafts. Due to the number of submissions, Four Quarter Theater can only read any play one time. Please submit the best and final version of your play for consideration.
 Submissions should include two separate PDF documents:
1) cover letter
2) script of play.

Cover Letter

 Title, author’s name, address, phone number, email address.

 Cover letter is the only document that the playwright’s name should appear on.

 A description of the play that is no more than ½ page in length—this need not be a summary, but may include description of the play’s world, the characters, the conflict, reason for writing the piece, connection to series theme, etc.


Script

 Playwright’s name should not appear anywhere on the actual script document.

 Title and page number must appear at the top of each page of the script.

 Title page should include at least the title, cast of characters, time and place.

 Script should be approximately 7 to 10 pages not including title page and include completed dialogue as plays cannot be edited after submission.

Selection of Plays

The play selection process is conducted by the Play Selection Committee. Plays are read blindly and at no time during the selection process will the playwright’s name be directly associated with the submitted script. As many as six plays are selected each series (approximately 4 times a year).

Four Quarter Theater is committed to highlighting work of emerging artists. There is no financial compensation for entries, nor is any financial commitment required by the playwright.

Four Quarter Theater reserves the sole right to make all production decisions with regard to the plays selected.

We are now accepting submissions for completed plays and works in progress that are suitable for staged reading. For consideration, scripts must be no longer than 150 typed pages and should not require more than 150 minutes total to perform. Filmscripts, screenplays, and adaptations of other authors’ work are not eligible.

We're especially interested in playwrights from the Tri-State area who will bring their supporters to The Seeing Place, aiding us in developing an audience hungry for new works.

Send us your full length plays. Long one-acts, two-acts, three-acts if you think you have what it takes! We can take it, and...well...we want it. These will be considered for our regular theatre season (not for THEATRE ROULETTE, I repeat...not for THEATRE ROULETTE). Bring it on, playwrights. We want you! We need some length.

WE ARE ONLY ACCEPTING 500 SUBMISSIONS.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We are looking for plays that are a bit off the beaten path. Things that are different, edgy, strange, unique, etc. I think you get our drift here.

Though we are up for anything, ideally, scripts should be long one-acts (70-90 minutes) or two-act plays (100-120 minutes). If you have something else longer, please feel free to send it on.

You may submit multiple scripts. If you are submitting multiple scripts, please include them all in a single email.

Please include your name, address, phone number, and email address in the body of your email message.

Script submissions WILL NOT be returned to the applicant; MadLab will destroy all evidence of your creative instincts upon a funeral pyre at an undisclosed location in order to protect both the innocent and the guilty. Ashes will NOT be returned to you unless you purchase a commemorative urn from MadLab at the bargain basement price of $999.95.

Due to our environmentally conscious president, you must email your script to us. Please send your script attached as a Microsoft Word document or PDF format. Scripts should be emailed to andy@madlab.net. Please put “MADLAB 2016 SEASON” in the subject line. If “MADLAB 2016 SEASON” is not in your subject line, your submission may not be received. All submissions will receive a reply email to ensure that your submission was received.

MadLab pays a royalty of $200 + 10% of our box office for any playwright that is gracious enough to allow us to produce his/her work. We know this will not be anywhere near worth the time and effort you put into writing your play, but we are happy that every little bit helps.

Backwell Playhouse seeks radio plays

Backwell Playhouse will be presenting classic-style radio plays in 2015, which will be released as free podcasts shortly after recording.

We are looking for plays that can be recorded in a radio style, with the ability to tell a story without visuals.

The plays can be of any length (although preference would be between 15-45 mins long), and for any number of actors. They can also be of any genre and style, from drama to comedy, noir to science fiction. We are looking for a diverse collection of plays to present an interesting range for listeners and actors alike.

The plays will be recorded in front of a live studio audience – with the cast performing as many sound effects as possible live.

Initially we will be recording 3-5 shows at a single performance. However, should the recordings prove to be a success, we would hope to record more in the future.

Sadly, no payment can be made for the use of the plays. However, the copyright for the play will remain with the writer who will be appropriately credited for the work in distribution. Copyright for all other elements of the production, including distribution, will remain with the Playhouse.

Studio C Artists seeks one acts

Studio C Artists is announcing the continuation of its One Act Series as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Each show in the series has revolved around a particular room. For 2015, we are pleased to present “In The Basement”. With today’s announcement, we are also putting out the call for writers’ submissions for this show in the Series, which is set to open June 12th and run through the end of July.

In this next collection of original works, Studio C Artists will produce up to ten one-acts written, directed, and performed around a common setting (to make a cohesive show) – this time it’s an unfinished basement. Everyone will eventually have the chance to participate, but right now we’re putting out a call for writers. (And not to worry – professional writers are encouraged to participate, but prior experience as a writer is not necessary.)

Here’s the scoop…

If you wish to submit, please send in a completed One Act play no more than 12 minutes in length by the deadline below (PDF format is preferred). The scenarios should involve anything that could take place in a basement, and be sure to make the room integral to the plot (in other words, plays that could be set anywhere, and are just placed in a basement, are less likely to be chosen). Please remember to keep things simple, as we are limited in the size of our stage. No more than 2-4 characters per piece (focus on ages 20-35) – and props and other elements are kept to a bare minimum. The story is key. They can be either comedies or dramas, your choice.

In short:
  • 8-10 plays will be chosen.
  • Please provide 1 completed One Act play, 12 minutes in length.
  • All works should be original – not having been produced at another theater in Los Angeles before.
  • Submissions are due no later than Friday, March 13th @ 5PM PST. (You can send them in earlier if you have it ready.)
  • Include a logline, a synopsis, and casting (character) breakdowns with your submission.
  • Email you submission to submissions@studiocartists.com.

Plays will be chosen by committee for this Series based upon the originality or their scenarios, along with the competency of the writing. The best way to ensure your play is chosen is to submit a well-written piece, which plays in a bare space, with no props, no more than 4 characters, and roles which require actors in their 20’s-early-30’s.

Festival@First 8: Fractured Fairy Tales

Theatre@First seeks scripts for an evening of short plays to be performed in Somerville over the weekends of July 31-August 8, 2015. Our Selection Committee will be looking for quality plays by new or established playwrights that draw the broadest possible audience while creating a vibrant evening of theatre. Boston-local playwrights are particularly encouraged to submit.

The festival's theme is "Fractured Fairy Tales." We hope to see this theme interpreted broadly! Consider not only familiar Western fairy tales but also those less popular or from other cultures ("The Mouse, the Bird and the Sausage," "Momotaro," "Baba Yaga") as well as myths and legends. Comedy is welcome, but so is drama – fairy tales contain poverty, child abuse, and serial-killer husbands as often as talking animals and charming princes. Think realism, like Pygmalion, as well as spoofs likeRocky & Bullwinkle and fantasy like Into the Woods. Use fairy tales as a jumping-off point for your imagination!

Directors will be sought after the Selection Committee chooses the slate of plays. Each play will have its own director and cast, and all casting will take place via a general audition this spring. Submission criteria is as follows:
  • Plays should be 10-15 minutes long.
  • Recommended cast size 2-5.
  • Theatre@First embraces diversity; writers are encouraged to imagine plays for actors across a wide spectrum of race, gender expression, religion, age, body type, and ability.
  • No improvisation or straight dance pieces.
  • Published, unpublished, new, or previously performed plays are all welcome.
  • Plays will be performed on a simple stage with minimal prop and set requirements and a repertory light plot.
  • Maximum two play submissions per playwright.
  • The plays must be royalty-free as unfortunately we cannot offer payment for rights. Theatre@First was founded to provide affordable theatre to our community and to offer an artistic venue to community members wishing to volunteer their skills and talents.
DEADLINE for submission is March 15, 2015, with notification of intent to submit no later than March 1.

Gulfport Community Players (Gulfport, Florida) seeking original one-act plays

The Gulfport Community Players (Gulfport, Florida) are seeking original one-act plays. Plays selected will be performed during the 15th Annual Summer One-Acts Festival being held July 9-19, 2015.

Playwrights are encouraged to submit family-friendly, 5-20 minute plays. Plays should be submitted between February 1 and March 15, 2015. The Players prefer light-hearted comedies and light drama. Scripts must be simple to stage and produce.

We are NOW accepting submissions for Lama Theater Company’s Monthly Question! The Monthly Question is a monthly reading series of new writing (short plays/ Monologues/ poems/ Songs) around Lama’s monthly question that will be performed at Dixon Place Lounge, New York.

Mission: Lama means WHY in Hebrew. The Lama Theater Company is a writer/director-driven company that continually raises questions and fearlessly searches for artistic exploration, provoking and risk-taking collaborative work between Israeli and American artists in the State of New York, and throughout the nation.

Everyday Inferno Theatre Company Development Lab

Everyday Inferno Theatre Company is seeking submissions from playwrights for its inaugural Development Lab. Each writer selected will be paired with a director with whom she or he will develop new material. All participants will meet once a month over a six-month period (June-December 2015) to critique each others’ work; the process will culminate in an invited reading. EITC will provide space for rehearsal and presentation of the projects.

Interested candidates should submit a résumé and two samples of your writing: one 10-page excerpt and one complete script (excerpts may or may not come from the complete script). A graduate from The American Musical Dramatic Academy, author Ariana Figueroa describes her play RED WINE IN PAPER CUPS as "a dramatic comedy alternately and affectionately deemed 'a different kind of fag-hag story.'" The Collective NY seeks submissions for the third annual Collective:10. Original 10-minute plays will be selected to premiere in a fully produced Fall run at a prominent Manhattan venue and published in The Collective:10 Play Anthology, Vol. 3.

Lakes Area Radio Theatre accepts script submissions from writers

Lakes Area Radio Theatre accepts script submissions from writers. Your original radio plays can be in any genre. Please see below for further guidelines regarding scripts.

Format Your script must be in a radio play format which differs from stage plays and screenplays. There are no stage directions, visual cues, lighting directions. The scripts should include easily discernible audio cues such as dialogue, sound effects (sfx), and music cues. Number the pages and number the lines starting over with 1 on each page for the lines.

Content We ask that content be suitable for all ages and family friendly. If you include innuendo and/or adult humor, please keep in mind some “children’s shows” which appealed to adults as well: Rocky and Bullwinkle, Fractured Fairytales, and the like. We broadcast our shows on a growing network of radio stations.

Length Lakes Area Radio Theatre has a 30 minute broadcast space to fill every other week. Plays can be 29-31 minutes in length. Script lengths are in the range of 5000 +/- words.
We will accept scripts for single shows
We will accept scripts that would run for 2 installments
We will accept a series of shorter plays which fill 30 minutes

Fame Not Fortune We pay a royalty fee of $30 per half hour of entertainment. This is based on input from radio script playwrights from around the USA as well as a BBC radio script writer.

Royalty Agreement If we accept and use your script, we will send you a writer’s agreement. This agreement will grant us the right to produce the script; it will grant us the right to reproduce as many copies of the script as needed to produce the script; it will grant us the broadcasting and rebroadcasting rights to the taped production (radio and podcasts); the writer retains all rights to their original and/or adapted work.

Return Policy We may not take the opportunity to use your script. There could be a number of reasons for this such as its length, content not deemed suitable for our audience, or just that we believe it needs more work. We will try to give feedback so that writers can edit and resubmit their work.

Script Submission We accept hard copies and electronic copies of scripts. Electronic copies are preferred.
