Proscenium Theatre Journal

Proscenium accepts original plays of any length and style, original adaptations (as long as the rights for the adapted work are secured) and musicals. We also accept articles about playwriting and theatre.

Submission Procedures

We only accept submissions via email. Please email your original play or article to submissions@prosceniumjournal.com with the subject “Submission: [Title], [Author.]” We would like you to submit your play as both a Word Document and PDF file (If you cannot convert your play into a Word Document we are fine with just a PDF file, but we will request a Word Document if your play is accepted for publication). In addition, please submit a brief, 100-word author bio. If your play has been produced, please feel free to send us information about production history and production photos.

The deadline to be considered for the third issue of Proscenium is August 1st, 2015. However, we accept submissions year-round and will consider them for future editions.

Due to the large number of submissions we receive, we regret that we cannot acknowledge all submissions. Proscenium reserves the right to reject any submission for any reason.

Postcard Theatre's New Writing Competition.

1. All the scripts MUST be new writing, by which we mean, previously unperformed by any other company.

2. The scripts MUST have a performance run time of between 60 and 90 minutes.

3. The script MUST require a cast of no less than 2 actors but no more than 5 actors.

4. There is no restriction on the age or gender of the characters.

5. There is no restriction of the style or genre of the pieces but they MUST be suitable for fringe production.

The Process

The deadline for scripts to be submitted by is 5pm on Friday 21st August 2015. This is is to allow for writers to have time to write something new should they wish to, and have time to complete that process. However we will accept scripts at any time prior to that, and hold them until the deadline.

Round 1

During this round, a Postcard Theatre panel will read all submissions and compile a shortlist to move to the next round.


Round 2

We will submit our shortlist to a panel of external professionals who are not from within Postcard Theatre and who will shortlist further


Round 3

The playwrights who have scripts on the external panel's shortlist will be asked to select an extract which will then be presented to a public audience & panel in the form of a rehearsed reading. The audience along with a panel will decide on two scripts to take forward into the final round.


Round 4

The final two scripts will have a longer extract presented to a public audience & panel in the form of a rehearsed, read performance. The combination of audience and panel will decide on the winning script & playwright.


What You Can Win...

The winning playwright will have their script turned into our next, full Postcard Theatre production. We will also award £50 to the winning playwright for the performance rights covering the full run of the production.

North Park Playwright Festival

Our goal in building the North Park Vaudeville and Candy Shoppe was to provide a small theater to produce new, untested plays. In support of this goal we have produced the North Park Playwright Festival each October. The festival provides a platform for brand new, short (ten minute), plays written by playwrights from around the world. Over the past twelve years more than 400 new plays have been produced. We encourage new directors and actors to become involved in theater through the festival as well. Through the North Park Playwright Festival over ninety playwrights, directors, and actors each year are able to showcase their talents. We invite interested playwrights to submit work to the festival. 

Please follow the guidelines below.

We are looking for:

1. Short new plays (no more that 12 pages, less is fine) that are easily staged and have casts with no more than four people. Our theater is very small and we normally use a minimal set concept in this festival. We have to be able to change sets in just a few minutes as we do six to seven plays each evening of the festival. We don't have space for large casts.

2. We request new work. A play that has had workshops or one or two previous productions is OK, but we are not interested in work that has been produced in numerous other places. Our goal in building the theater was to have a place to produce brand new work and let playwrights have a chance to see their work done for the first time.

3. We seek complete plays rather than excerpts from a larger work.

4. Work will be chosen by the directors we have in the festival. It is not a "contest" and we are not really judging plays in the formal sense. The directors choose the plays we will produce, within the production budget guidelines we give them.

5. Most subject matter is OK. We don't do nudity or off color humor.

6. We ask that all submissions be sent to us via snail mail at the theater. Address is: North Park Vaudeville and Candy Shoppe, 2031 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, CA 92104, Attn Summer Golden, Artistic Director. We have too much trouble with differing email, word processing, and computer platform issues to take them via email. Additionally, our selection process requires the directors read the plays submitted and the cost of printing all the plays we receive each year is prohibitive. Please insure submissions have a title page with complete contact information (including email), a character summary, and are in proper script form. There is no charge to enter.

7. Submissions must be postmarked by June 30, 2015. Please do not send plays by any method that requires a signature from us. We are not often at the theater when delivery occurs. We will email notice of receipt to all playwrights submitting plays.

8. Send only one script. Multiple submissions do not increase chances of production.

General information:

We are trying to support new work and involve actors, playwrights, and directors of all experience levels. We have had a wide variety of artists involved from very experienced to first time directors and actors, to an 8 year old playwright (very short, well received play). We feel having a wide range of experience involved helps the new people learn from the more experienced.

NEW PLAY SUBMISSIONS FOR SUBURBAN HOLIDAYS 2015

Quannapowitt Players, Inc. is seeking one-act play submissions for our fourth Suburban Holidays production of new holiday plays the for November/December, 2015 Production.

Suburban Holidays explores the theme of the holiday season (in whatever form that means for the playwright) in a town “very much like Reading, MA.” As this festival is being produced in November/December, a preference for date-appropriate holidays (Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, etc.) may come into play; however, all holidays are appropriate material for this festival.

This year’s festival will consist of 4-5 full one-act plays. This means that plays under 20 minutes will not be considered. Plays must be no less than 20 minutes and no more than 45 minutes in length when performed. PLEASE NOTE: If your script is fewer than 20 pages long, the play reading committee will discard it without consideration.

Since this festival draws a large pool of talented actors, plays featuring more than 4 characters will be considered first. Larger cast plays are strongly encouraged!

Preference is given to playwrights from New England, though any playwright may submit. If you are not a resident of New England, your play will be considered, but we do give preference to our area, to increase the chances of having the playwrights visit and see their plays in our festival.

Modern/contemporary plays are given preference. Costuming restraints might not allow for period pieces at this Festival.

Plays must be submitted electronically in MS Word or PDF format, written in standard play format to the festival Producing Director, Patrick Cleary at patrickjamescleary@gmail.com. Paper copies of plays will not be accepted.

Submissions must be received by noon on July 31, 2015.

Plays must be the original works of the playwrights and unpublished at the time of production. Preference is given to unproduced works, but works with limited production runs will be considered.

Original musicals will be considered, though musical accompaniment will be restricted to a keyboardist, should a musical be produced.

Playwrights whose plays are chosen for production will receive an honorarium of $100 for the festival.

Playwrights whose pieces are chosen will be notified via email no later than August 15, 2015. Selections will also be posted here on the Quannapowitt Players website.

About the Play

- Non-musical, full-length plays for writers 19 years and older.

- Submitted scripts must be unpublished and must not have received a full production. The Cloverdale Playhouse reading is to be a world premiere.

- The winning play will be read at the Cloverdale Playhouse by actors from the community in September 2015.

- Publicity for the event will be handled by the Cloverdale Playhouse. The winning playwright may be asked to participate in preparing the event and any media/marketing relating to the event.

The Northern Writers' Project

The Northern Writers' Project is a week-long playwriting intensive where four plays are workshopped with the playwrights, directors, actors and audience. There will be a full week of rehearsal for each play leading to two public readings of each play with talkbacks after each reading. The Project will give playwrights a chance to develop their plays more thoroughly while showcasing their talent. Playwrights from all over the country are welcome to submit.

The 2015 Northern Writers' Project will be held August 31-September 6.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?

IN PREPARATION, you should:
READ the book if you haven’t already
WATCH our video interview with playwright Dawn King on her process of adapting Brave New World for the forthcoming tour, as well as her advice on how she would approach this writing challenge.

GET WRITING:

Write a final scene for your own imagined version of Brave New World. This should NOT be a dramatised scene of the book’s actual ending. Instead it should be a scene (no more than FIVE minutes) created from your own imagination that takes place either BEFORE or AFTER or as an ALTERNATIVE to the book’s existing conclusion.

WHAT DO I GET?

All submissions will be published online here. The overall best ten submissions – as judged by writer Dawn King and producer Jenny King – will be invited to take part in a very special, one-day, playwriting workshop*, led by renowned writer and actor Nigel Planer.

PLUS, if you submit before 7 September 2015, you may ALSO be in the running to have your scene given a professional rehearsed reading on stage at one of the show’s eight touring venues.**

*Note: The workshop, which will take place in Birmingham in January 2016 (date tbc) is free of charge and includes lunch and reasonable travel expenses (within the UK). Radio Drama Revival Submission Guidelines

Radio Drama Revival is dedicated to showcasing the best of modern audio drama, though “modern” can be interpreted loosely, as the show has featured work as far back at 1980 before, and even, on occasion, Old Time Radio (OTR) remakes.

By “best,” we mean work that we feel effectively showcases the vitality of the audio drama medium. This means meeting broadcast standards of audio recording quality, music, sound effects, dialogue, mixing, and more important than them all – story. After all, the story is the reason anything is happening at all.

We’re particularly excited by work that shows a command of the audio medium and creates a uniquely audio experience – something that could not be quite the same in print, film, or stage.

Mark Time-winning audio dramatist Jonathan Mitchell explains well what we’re looking for:

Radio drama offers an opportunity for a purer form of radio — it doesn’t exist to talk about something else or interview someone about their thing. It is the thing.
What Do We Want?

We’re not looking for clever sound effects or awesome music. Even great actors do not alone make great radio. We want audio that tells stories well, and embrace the diversity of storytelling forms out there. RDR has featured comedy, contemporary drama, mystery, fantasy, science fiction, speculative fiction, theological fiction and, of course, blood-curdling horror. The show DOES go out on broadcast radio at WMPG FM in Portland, Maine so while challenging subject matter is encouraged, gratuitous violence, language, and sex usually don’t work out. We also don’t generally feature pure comedy – though work that is funny is very welcome!

Programs that are 30-60 minutes tend to work best, though on occasion longer shows have been featured in multi-part episodes, and series have been featured in excerpts. RDR also usually features interviews with the producer and/or writer and actors.

StageCoach Theatre Company seeks scripts for young audiences

At StageCoach Theatre Company, we are looking for original scripts for murder mystery dinner theatre performances.
  • Scripts should be written for 5-6 actors and include both men and women.
  • Total duration of the show including dinner and question-and-answer period from the audience should be approximately 2.5 – 3 hours. This is roughly 45 pages.
  • Show should have little or no set or technical requirements since shows will be performed in open rooms and restaurants.
  • Murderless mysteries are fine, too. They can be aimed at adults or at older children (10+).
  • All of our murder mysteries are PG13. Children’s mysteries should be PG rated.

We are also looking for original scripts for our Theatre for Young Audiences. These can be new stories or clever adaptations of traditional favorites.
  • Scripts should be written for 5-15 actors and include both men and women. Children age 12+ may be included in the cast but the show should be primarily adults acting for a young audience.
  • Show should be approximately 1 hour with no intermission.
  • Show should have simple set requirements which can be easily transported.
  • Rating should be G or PG. Primary target audience would be 5-12 years old.

Cimientos seeks plays

Cimientos 2015 brings together a curation of what contemporary playwriting has to offer in the most exhilarating of forms. Genres are bent out of shape and reborn in ways that methodically explode on the paper that will then be exposed on stage. Now in its 15th year, this play development program continues to fuel the genesis of theater: the playwright. With an array of national and cross-continental writers, Cimientos will be the host to the bravest of theatrical statements; all plays are not created equal and our avant-garde is a solemn cry into what theater can and should do today.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • There is no submission fee for Cimientos.
  • Submissions lacking any of the following guidelines will not be considered.
  • Submission will only be accepted through the online form. See link above (only visible in June 2015.)
  • Submissions must be the author's own work. The piece shall be free from copyright restrictions and the author agrees to hold IATI Theater and directors free and harmless from all copyright claims.
  • The playwright must commit to be present on the staged reading performance of his/her work.
  • The playwright must commit to be present on the PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel) assigned to his/her work.
  • This program is open to authors from anywhere in the world with original works in English or Spanish who are interested in a New York audience feedback. However, because of the PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel), every playwright must be present to take part in the monthly meetings or commit to presenting feedback electronically or in written form on the dates of the PPP's and with no delay.
  • Only one play may be submitted per playwright, per season.
  • Submissions must not exceed 90 minutes in length.
  • The play must require 5 actors or less. Plays that have more than 5 actors and do not provide a clear and stageable doubling explanation will not be reviewed. If doubling is possible, it must be expressed clearly on the online form.
  • The submission must be a completed full-length play that has not previously been produced in any setting. If the play has undergone a workshop, staged reading or development of any kind, the playwright must inform IATI Theater of the specifics on the online form.
  • The author’s name(s) should be nowhere within the script, any authorship information must not be visible in the play document. Scripts will be read ‘blind’.
  • Submissions for the 2016 Season will only be accepted from June 1 to June 30, 2015.


*The 2016 Cimientos will consists of two main components:

*PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel): Playwrights accepted to the program, IATI Theater’s artistic staff and other specially invited theater professionals will converge in workshop meetings to discuss the new works that make up the particular season. Every meeting will be dedicated to a single playwright in the program, the focus being in further advancing the text before it is presented in front of a live audience.

*SRP (Staged Reading Presentation): Each playwright in the program will be given the opportunity to present his/her play in a directed, professionally acted staged reading. Thus, the piece will be exposed to a receptive audience that further develops the featured script through a post-reading talkback.

Scary Theater Festival

Nightmare New York announces Nightmare Horror Show: New York's Only Scary Theater Festival

After 12 years of producing the city's oldest, largest and most horrifying Haunted House for Halloween, the Nightmare creators are going back to their theatrical roots and are producing the city's only horror theater festival. In addition to the works being presented by the artistic team of the haunted house, they are looking for a select few of the creepiest, most terrifying additional works to be a part of the oeuvre for the 4 week festival taking place at the same venue that the haunted house has been staged for the past 12 years (The Clemente in the lower east side). Nightmare entertains tens of thousands of patrons each year, and if selected your piece will be a part of a very visible and highly attended Halloween happening.

Requirements:
- Work approximately 30 minutes
- must be scary
- Must be NYC premieres, preferably US premieres.
- The production costs for your show are your own. You will be provided the space, general lighting and sound packages, a base set to work from, as well as a run crew (you can add to it) and promotion.
- no application or festival fee - all box offices is split 50/50
- 4 week run, no less than 3 performance dates a week
- You will be coupled with 2 other works on the same bill
- You will have appropriate tech time

GUIDELINES for PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE SEARCH

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting is seeking applications from playwrights of color for the 2015-2016 Harold Clurman Playwright-in-Residence program. This is a collaborative residency that is mutually beneficial to the mission of the studio and the playwright. We are seeking playwrights who:

- self-identify as people of color

- are in their early careers

- are unpublished

- have not yet had professional productions other than those using the showcase code

- have a vested interest in working with a community of artists

- are interested in engaging in a discussion about how the studio can support and challenge their work

While this is a merit-based residency search, we are particularly interested in diversity – diverse writers, voices, viewpoints, perspectives. The studio is interested in co-designing a residency with the playwright that will support and challenge their process. The course of the residency is not regimented, but may be described as “playwright’s choice” within the resources and capabilities of the studio. Past participants have chosen some of the following:

1) a series of readings on a play written during the course of the year

2) a series of readings on a variety of plays/pages

3) writing a new work for an ensemble of graduate level actors

4) a showcase production

The resident will engage in a discussion with the Artistic Director and other staff to explore what activities might be most helpful to their process during the year. Residencies typically begin in September and culminate in June. Resident playwrights receive a $1000 stipend and have access to the Studio’s space, members of the Clurman Lab Theatre Company, and student actors for readings and workshops.

Completed applications must include a required online application form AND a full-length, polished but unpublished play (a full-length play is one that constitutes a full evening of theater; a 90-minute one act play is acceptable). Playwrights must read and agree to the Letter of Agreement before applying. By applying for this residency, playwrights confirm that they have read and agree to the Letter of Agreement.

Your play submission should be “blind”. The cover page should ONLY include the title of your play. Your name should not be anywhere on the blinded script. This copy will be shared with the committee of play readers who will not know the authors of the plays they are reading.

Completed applications must be received by Monday, July 6, 2015.

Please note that applicants who advance to the final round of consideration may be asked for a second work sample.

Applicants will be considered for the playwright-in-residence position as well as:

- participation in the First Breath New Play Reading Series (Spring 2016)

- participation in the Teen Program Ten-Minute new play program (Summer 2016)

All plays will be read by a committee composed of alumni and upperclassmen in the first round. Plays that advance to the second and third rounds will be read by theater professionals and staff.

2015 FRED EBB AWARD

GUIDELINES Eligibility: Each applicant must be a composer/lyricist or composer/lyricist team wishing to create work for the musical theatre, and must not yet have achieved significant commercial success.

1. A CD of up to four songs from one or more musical theatre pieces, with typewritten lyrics and a description of the dramatic context for each song; and

2. A completed application form.

• We will code the applications as they arrive. Because all submissions will be reviewed blind, please do not place name(s) of writer(s) on the CD, lyric sheets, or description of dramatic context.

• Only musical theatre work will be considered.

• Please do not submit live recordings.

• The applicant(s) must have written all the songs included in the submission. For example, a composer cannot submit one song with her own lyrics, and a second song with lyrics by another writer.

• No individual may appear on more than one application. You cannot apply as an individual and again as part of a team, or as part of more than one songwriting team. Submission Deadline and Award: Applications will be accepted from June 1-30, 2015.

The Relentless Award, established in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman

The Relentless Award, established in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman and his pursuit of truth in the theater, is the largest annual cash prize in American theater awarded to a playwright in recognition of a new play.

What we are looking for:
  • Plays that are challenging.
  • Plays that exhibit fearlessness.
  • Plays that are not mainstream.
  • Plays that exude passion.
  • Plays that are relentlessly truthful
The American Playwriting Foundation encourages submissions by first time playwrights, women and playwrights of color.

Prize:
  • The author of the Relentless Award-winning play will receive $45,000.
  • The winning playwright will have the option to have the winning play published by the Dramatists Play Service.
  • The winning playwright will have a week-long residency at SPACE on Ryder Farm, an artist residency program housed on a working organic farm in Brewster, New York. The author can elect to have a director, a dramaturg and actors join him or her while in residence on the farm.
  • The selected play will have a national roll-out through the Ed Vassallo Relentless Reading Series, established to help bring to life and develop the winning play by presenting a series of staged readings at some of the top theaters across the United States.
  • When the winning play is selected, three runners-up will also be named.

Deadlines:

Submissions will be accepted up until midnight of July 10, 2015. The winner and three finalists will be announced on October 2, 2015.

Eligibility/Criteria for Submission:
  • Any unproduced play written by a United States citizen is eligible for The Relentless Award.
  • Each play must be submitted with a letter from a theater professional recommending the play. “Theater Professional” is defined as anyone who has worked in theater in any artistic capacity for a minimum of four years.
  • Plays with a producer, producing organization or theater attached are not eligible.
  • As much as we love them, one-act plays, musicals and plays for children are not eligible.
  • The author must be at least 21 years old.
How to submit your play:
  • Use the form to submit your play and accompanying letter of recommendation to The American Playwriting Foundation.
  • Please do not have your name or other identifying info (email/phone number) on any of your manuscript pages. This will preserve the author's anonymity for the judges.
  • We prefer to receive your files as pdfs (rather than Word documents).
  • You will receive a confirmation email after we receive your files.

AFO now accepting submissions for their Works-in-Progress

All For One Theater, an NYC based solo theater production company, is now accepting submissions for their Works-in-Progress program.

All For One’s Works In Progress series provides an outlet for solo shows in progress to receive outside help in their development. AFO will help connect solo show artists with directors and other collaborators as needed to help develop their work and present a reading in front of an audience, AFO community members, and industry professionals to receive feedback.

Artists selected for the Works-In-Progress Series receive:

· 10 hours of rehearsal space
· Assistance in choosing a director
· Support and guidance from AFO staff
· A staged reading, presented in front of an audience of AFO community members and invited industry
· Structured feedback from both the audience and AFO staff

GUIDELINES for ENSEMBLE PLAY SEARCH

Seeking new, full-length ensemble plays for young actors with casts of 7-10 roles that have a majority of female characters or gender neutral characters. One play or more may be selected for a student production (this is a curricular project for full-time acting students). Plays must be new, unproduced works and require minimal set, props, costumes.

Completed applications must include a required application form and a full-length play.

Please note: Your play submission should be “blind”. The cover page should ONLY include the title of your play. Your name should not be anywhere on the blinded script. This copy will be shared with the committee of play readers who will not know the authors of the plays they are reading.

Completed applications must be received by Monday, July 6, 2015.

Please note, however, that we have submissions guidelines for those interested in being considered for publication. We require as follows -
Show Synopsis and brief CV of the individual (s) submitting their work.
If we do request material from you, please submit typed scripts and computer generated (i.e. not hand-written) scores for musicals, along with a CD.
Any supporting material (Reviews, videos, photos etc.) will be considered when making a final assessment of your work.

Due to the large amount of submissions we receive, we regret that we cannot at this time return submitted materials - therefore please always submit copies of your work, not originals.

The Ingram New Works Project

The Ingram New Works Project was launched by Nashville Repertory Theatre in 2009 thanks to the generous support of Martha Ingram. With the mission to support the creation of new works for the theatre, Nashville Rep created a project that includes the New Works Lab.

The Ingram New Works Lab is intended to be an artistic home for emerging playwrights to share and develop new work, hone craft, receive direction, and springboard themselves into the next phase of their writing career, providing a fertile environment for the emergence of great new plays.

Nashville Rep seeks committed playwrights for residency in the 2015-2016 Ingram New Works Lab.
THE INGRAM NEW WORKS LAB

The Ingram New Works Lab is a generative residency in which selected playwrights will create a new work for the theatre. Nashville Rep will serve and support selected playwrights as they work to develop their play from the idea stage to a muscular full draft. Nashville Rep will provide the playwrights-in-residence:
  • A season-long playwright-run script lab that meets once a month.
  • Access to professional actors, providing a choice of collaborators amongst theatre artists in Nashville.
  • Workshop sessions involving professional directors, designers, and dramaturgs.
  • Access to professional marketing and audience development resources.
  • A symposium with the Ingram New Works Fellow, a playwright with a national reputation.
  • Participation in the Ingram New Works Festival, giving the playwrights the opportunity to work with a professional director and actors in rehearsal and hear their script read in front of a live audience.
  • A supportive environment to foster and support the playwright’s process.
  • Housing during residency dates in Nashville.
  • Travel reimbursement up to $375.00 for each trip to Nashville.
  • A small stipend to defray additional expenses.

PARTICIPATION IN MONTHLY SCRIPT LAB

The New Works Lab will meet once a month to provide playwrights-in-residence with a supportive but disciplined environment to workshop their scripts. By definition a laboratory is a testing ground inasmuch as it offers opportunities for observation, practice and experimentation. Every playwright will have the opportunity to hear multiple drafts of their script read aloud by actors and receive feedback from their fellow playwrights. The lab will provide the opportunity for playwrights to shape, mold, and develop as many drafts as they feel necessary before festival rehearsals begin.

Lab Meeting dates (a full day commitment on the following dates):
2015: Sept. 11; Oct. 16, 17; Nov. 6, 7; Dec. 11, 12
2016: Jan. 9-15 Feb. 19, 20; March 25, 26; April TBA

SYMPOSIUM WEEK WITH NEW WORKS FELLOW

Playwrights-in-residence will participate in a week-long New Works Lab symposium with the recipient of the Ingram New Works Fellowship, a nationally recognized playwright. The symposium will take advantage of the New Works Fellow’s experience and skill, focusing on a wide variety of issues related to working as a playwright: everything from how an emerging playwright gets a script produced to how to manage the pitfalls of the development process to specific guidance on the art of playwriting. The New Works Fellow will serve as a mentor to the playwrights-in-residence throughout the season via electronic communication. Lab participants should be prepared to clear their schedule for the entirety of the week-long symposium.

PARTICIPATION IN INGRAM NEW WORKS FESTIVAL

Work in the Lab will be focused on goals established by the Lab Playwrights. However, each playwright will be expected to work toward the creation of a new play that will be presented in a staged reading at the New Works Festival, whether completed or as a work in progress. Please note the following criteria for New Works festival plays being developed in the lab:


Full-length plays (prefer 80-120 mins. running time).
Plays that utilize no more than 8 actors.
Plays that have not previously been produced by any professional company.

May 4-14, 2016

APPLICATION GUIDELINES FOR THE INGRAM NEW WORKS LAB

Nashville Rep will award up to four residencies in the New Works Lab. Each playwright who accepts the residency will commit to participating in the monthly Lab meeting, the New Works symposium, rehearsals for the New Works Festival, and assisting with the New Works Festival in May 2016 as auxiliary artistic staff. All playwrights who accept a residency must commit to be available for all lab, symposium, rehearsal and festival dates. Should a playwright-in-residence miss multiple commitments, they may be asked to forgo their place in the New Works Lab. Nashville Rep provides limited travel reimbursement for playwrights-in-residence and encourages regional playwrights to consider travel costs and commitments before applying.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

All applications should include the following material:


A letter stating your objectives for working on a new play in the Ingram New Works Lab at Nashville Rep. You must include a description of your proposed play.
One Page Bio with history as a playwright.
One Page Artistic Statement.
A play that best represents your writing skill. Full-length is preferred, but a substantial one-act play (minimum of one hour running time) will be acceptable for this application. Author and contact information must appear on the title page. Please do not submit musicals, screenplays, TV scripts, or children’s theatre.

The 5th annual
NEWvember New Plays Festival
Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th November 2015

Inaugurated in 2011 as a co-production of Tangent Theatre Company and AboutFACE Ireland, NEWvember is a festival of rehearsed readings of new plays that takes place over four days at the Carpenter Shop Theatre in the historic village of Tivoli in upstate New York.

We are now pleased to invite submissions of new plays for the 2015 NEWvember festival:

CRITERIA FOR SUBMISSIONS
– submitted plays should be previously unproduced (we will consider plays that have had readings before but are still in development)
– plays cannot have previously been submitted to the NEWvember Festival
– plays should have a cast size of 2-8
– plays should have a running time of 30 to 120 minutes
– we will only accept one submission per writer
– we ask that the writers of the chosen plays attend the reading of their play towards its further development and to be present for a post-reading Q&A with the audience. We will provide $50 towards travel for those traveling more than 50 miles, as well as local private housing accommodation in the Tivoli area
– there is no fee for submissions
– while we are open to all styles and subjects, our companies do have a preference for narrative and character driven stories

PROCESS OF SUBMISSION:

you will be asked to include
– your play as a PDF (without the writer’s name, email or other identifying marks on any page throughout the script – to aid our blind reading process)
– the title page, listing the name of author, separately

SUBMISSION DATES:
The window for submissions opens Friday May 1st 2015.
The closing date for submissions is Monday June 15th 2015 (12 midnight EST).
This year, we will only consider the first 400 scripts submitted meeting these criteria.

Please note that these criteria will be applied strictly and any submissions made after the closing date or not following the submission guidelines will not be considered. In addition, our festival’s reading panel will not be able to provide feedback on specific plays or on the status of your application.

The writers of the plays that have been shortlisted will be contacted in early September and will be asked to send any updated version of their play, as this will be the final version considered and the version read at the festival if chosen.

The invited plays will be announced in October.

CASTING: Please note – the chosen plays will be read by an ensemble of actors, each performing roles in multiple plays in the festival. While we will endeavor to provide the best match of cast for each play that is read, in terms of characters’ listed ages/ethnicities, we also need to form an ensemble to best cover the entire range of the festival’s program. We appreciate our playwrights’ understanding of our ensemble-based casting.

Seeking submissions of short scripts for podcast

Seeking submissions of short scripts (plays, monologues, screenplays, sketches, etc.) ideally between 10-30 minutes in length, for a podcast called Amy's Horse. Kind of an NPR vibe. Actors in multiple locations will connect remotely from their own homes via the internet, and be recorded in a studio in Vermont. We’ll chat with the authors, read a short script or two, talk about the plays, and gossip about what we’re all working on! It’s more of a gathering. Very relaxed. Part play reading, part cocktail party, all fun! All subject matter is welcome.

Submission Rules

How to Submit your work to the Thespis Festival
In order to submit a play please send the following via email:
1. A short synopsis of the play and the Production history
2. The complete script and character breakdown
3. Your telephone number and home address,
4. Your bio.
All genres of shows are welcome to submit to our festivals. Musicals need to attach at least 3 tracks with their submission
Shows that have already been staged can also participate as long as the run was
BEFORE 2014 and will participate with AN ENTIRELY NEW CAST AND CREW.

As soon as your play is accepted, you will be sent the festival guidelines.

Prizes
After all plays have had their performance run, the best 6 plays will be selected by the Thespis jury as nominees for the $3,500 prize of Best Play. Those 6 shows will be given a fourth performance.
That will be seen by judges, who are theater professionals invited by the Thespis team. Along with the judges, you are encouraged to invite audience members to attend your fourth performance.

In Addition to the Best Pay there will also be several nominations:
Best actress ($500 prize) Best Actor ($500),
Best Director ($500), Best Singer $500, Best Original play $200 and

Winners will be announced during a special prize ceremony at the end of the festival to which the cast and crew of all nominated productions will be invited.

All winners leave the prize ceremonywith their check in hand.

There is no fee to submit your play to the Thespis Festival. Once you are accepted:

Productions will be asked to send in a $200 participation fee if their plays are accepted.

Plays from every part of the US are accepted.

This festival has no hidden costs. Again, there is no submission fee. Only those plays that are accepted will be required to send a participant payment. Submissions will be accepted until July 1, 2015.

Undiscovered Voices Scholarship

The Writer’s Center seeks promising writers in the Washington area earning less than $25,000 annually to apply. This scholarship program will provide complimentary writing workshops to the selected applicant for a period of one year, but not to exceed 8 workshops in that year (and not to include independent studies). We expect the recipient will use the year to make progress toward a completed manuscript of publishable work.

Previous winners include Marija Stajic (2013) Rose Fitzpatrick (2013), Nicole Idar (2012), Gimbiya Kettering (2011), Lee Kaplan (2010) and Susan Bucci Mockler (2009).

The Writer’s Center believes writers of all backgrounds and experiences should have an opportunity to devote time and energy toward the perfection of their craft.

The recipient will be able to attend writing workshops offered by The Writer’s Center free of charge. In addition, he or she will give a reading from his or her work after the close of the scholarship period and will be invited to join our community in ways most intereting to them.

To apply, candidates should submit:

a) a cover letter signed by the candidate that contains the statement: “I understand and confirm I meet all eligibility requirements of the Undiscovered Voices Scholarship.” The cover letter should include information on the impact this scholarship would have on the candidate.

b) contact information for two references who can speak to the candidate’s creative work and promise

c) a work sample in a single genre:
8 pages of poetry, no more than one poem per page
10 pages of fiction, double-spaced, no more than one work or excerpt

Qu is a literary journal, published by the MFA program at Queens University of Charlotte. The Qu editorial staff is comprised of current students.

We publish fiction, poetry, essays and script excerpts of outstanding quality. Payment upon publication is $100 per prose piece and $50 per poem.

New York New Works Festival Now Accepting Submissions

NYNW is a play competition in which the audience and the NYNW Panel of elite Broadway Producers, Emmy award winners and leading industry professionals cast their votes with the audience to select the best play of the season. Plays move from the 1st Round to the Semi-Finals and then to the Finals.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS JUNE 20, 2015.
  • The playwright of the winning play, contingent upon abiding by the festival rules, receives $500.00 and the opportunity to have their play aired on a local media outlet.
  • NYNW (Aug. & Sept. 2015) is seeking NEW one act or short works plays for our 2015 New York New Works Theatre Festival. We are searching for engaging new work that is commercially viable. NYNW is a showcase for comedies, musicals, and dramas told with an original voice and compelling storytelling.
  • Two to three plays from each evening will be selected to go on to the semi-final rounds.
  • Five to six plays from the semi-final rounds will be selected to continue to the final round.
  • All projects should have a beginning, middle, and an end (no excerpts without a full story). NYNW will not consider submissions over 30 minutes in length.
  • Playwrights may submit up to two plays per year for consideration.

WE WANT YOUR FULL-LENGTH SCRIPTS

What are you working on? What are you excited about? What would you like to discuss and develop with a creative team? Bring it on.

Panglossian is seeking new full-length plays for our new global/local developmental reading series, Plays in Progress.

We work with writers across the globe to develop work locally here in Williamsburg.

Selected playwrights will discuss their goals for the script with our staff, attend one or two discussion/rehearsals, and participate in a public reading, which will be streamed online. Writers who are not local may participate virtually over Skype.

What are we looking for?

Playwrights at different stages in their careers who share our sense of daring and passion, and a desire to develop their work in a collaborative, supportive setting.

Plays that show muscular language and strong theatricality and that say something universal in a unique way. While we are open to any genre, we would love to receive more comedic full-lengths and smart plays for young audiences.

How to join the Dramatists Guild

For those submitting digitally – the $15 fee cannot be waived, and may be mailed separately or processed by contacting the theatre.

ELIGIBILITY:
Entry must be a full length original work or adaptation with a minimum running time of 85 minutes that has not been published prior to the festival in 2016. Cast size of 7 or less is preferred. Staged readings/workshop productions are not disqualifying factors.

ENTRIES ACCEPTED:
Submissions will be accepted January 1 through June 30, 2015 (checked by postmark or time stamp).

SCRIPTS:
Submit a blind copy of your script, securely bound, typed in standard play format, with pages numbered. Include a list of characters/descriptions, scene breakdown, and a brief synopsis of your play. Your script(s) should be accompanied by a cover letter, including playwright contact information (name, address, phone number, e-mail address) and resume. Musicals must include a demo CD. If applicable, also submit a photocopy of your Dramatists Guild membership card.

The acceptable electronic format is an Adobe PDF file.

Please note that entries that do not comply with our guidelines will not be accepted. If you would like your script returned, please include a SASE. Script evaluations will not be provided.

CONSENT:
The playwright gives the Jewish Ensemble Theatre permission to photocopy scripts for reading/ production purposes. Should your script be selected as one of the 4 finalists, you are encouraged to attend the two readings and talkbacks.

The four finalists award the Jewish Ensemble Theatre the option to produce any of the finalist plays as part of its main stage season. Finalists must acknowledge the Jewish Ensemble Theatre if/when script is published.

AWARDS:
Each of the four finalists will receive a $500 honorarium. No other expenses will be paid.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Each entry is guaranteed a minimum of 2 evaluations. The committee narrows down the entries to 15 – 20, which are then read by the entire committee who selects the 4 finalists.

Unfortunately we cannot give feedback on all scripts which we read and do not accept; however in a very few cases, we may give feedback to playwrights who we feel have great potential, but whose submission may have just missed the mark.

What We Are Looking For
FIRST TIME playwrights. Of course, the more experienced you are, the more likely your writing will be of good quality and thus accepted. However, we strongly encourage you to be brave and send in your writing, even if you have never written a play in your life. If you need more encouragement, look up how playwright Shelagh Delaney got started!
EMERGING playwrights who would like to have an audio play produced and develop their audio writing.

ESTABLISHED playwrights who would like to experiment with a new piece of writing which suits audio; in the past, playwrights have found Frequency a good testing ground for new material.
We are looking for a wide range of plays; we will consider all genres, styles, content, issues etc. However we are especially interested in plays which: take risks with the medium of audio; embrace what can be communicated through audio (ie. large scale/abstract/imaginative events which would be difficult or expensive to convey visually); tell stories which often go unheard in the theatre/in society.


Before You Send Us Your Script
Please read the following script submission guidelines carefully:


  • All scripts must be for AUDIO. Scripts for the stage, screen plays, or any other dramatic work which has not been written or adapted for the medium of audio will not be accepted.
  • All work submitted must be in the form of a SCRIPT; please do not send in novels or short stories. If you are a poet wishing to work within the medium of audio theatre, please give some thought as to how your poetry will work in dramatic form, and indicate how you would like this to be achieved.
  • We prefer scripts to be TEN TO FIFTEEN MINUITES IN LENGTH. However we may consider plays up to twenty minutes, or as short as five minutes. PLEASE NOTE THAT PLAYS ANY LONGER THAN THIS WILL NOT BE READ. It can be difficult to judge how long your play will be pre-performance, but as a rough guide: in size 12 font, one page of dialogue is a minute long. For further help with this, we recommend the online BBC Writer’s Room.
  • All scripts must be predominantly in the ENGLISH language; if parts of your play are in another language, please provide accurate translations.
  • Scripts should not have been professionally performed/produced previously; we are looking for BRAND NEW WRITING. However, if you feel there are particular circumstances you would like us to take into consideration, get in touch.
  • We accept the use of ‘bad language’ in our productions.
  • We aim to produce plays with a wide range of views, including those not necessarily held by any of Frequency’s actors, directors or producers, however we would not produce any work which could be deemed ‘malicious’.
  • We accept plays of both large and small cast sizes, including monologues. Please be aware however, that if you do send us a script with a very large cast (i.e. more than ten characters), there may be less chance of it being produced.

After You Have Sent Us Your Script


Your script will be read and you will hear as to whether we would like to produce your work within two months of us receiving your work.

If we are going to produce your work, we will usually ask for a further draft of your script and provide you with feedback from a script reader. You may also receive advice from the director who has been assigned to your script.

Terms of a contract between the writer and Frequency will be drawn up before the play is recorded. For all plays Frequency produces which have not been commissioned, there is a standard form of contract which Frequency uses, usually without alteration; the details of which may be discussed after a play has been accepted for production.

Frequency’s first duty is to the playwright; once a final draft has been agreed on, we will not alter your dialogue during the recording or editing. However playwrights should be aware that artistic choices such as casting do reside with the director and producer.

Once a play has been rehearsed and recorded, it is then edited (a process which includes adding sound effects and music not present in the recording) and made ready for release. Once a play is released, it is available for free via our website (where it will remain indefinitely), iTunes, and for a limited time, Sound Cloud. Aside from providing an audience for your play, we hope playwrights will find it useful to always have a piece of their work which can be easily shared and accessed in order to promote the playwright’s work.

Mystery on the Menu needs several 5-10 minute mysteries for its second annual mystery festival on July 13th

 Plays must be 5-10 minutes in length (5-10 typewritten, double spaced pages), have no more than four characters and have something to do with the number thirteen...

Plays chosen will receive a staged reading at the festival on July 13th.

Acadiana Repertory Theatre submission guidelines

The Acadiana Repertory Theatre is comitted to serve playwrights as a place where they feel they can develop work with a company that has a desire to help in the growth of both the playwright and the play. We strive to create a safe, creative, open environment for our playwrights and, using our own experience, along with the experiences of some of our friends from across the country, we seek to help playwrights create and develop shows that have the best chance of a long life of production.

Through developmental readings, a new works festival, and soon, the posibilities of residences, we hope to help, through working with the amazing playwrights we come in contact with, the voices of new american playwrights be heard.

Briefs: A Festival of Short LGBT Plays

It's that time of year again, and we are opening short play submissions for our fifth annual Briefs: A Festival of Short LGBT Plays, which will be held in Spring 2016 in St Louis, Missouri. The festival is well attended and received and usually gets excellent coverage.

We are looking for plays that are 8-12 minutes in length, have two to five characters and that can be done with simple staging/props (we only use cubes for the set and minimal props), and that are LGBT themed. In the past few years, we have gotten a lot of pieces about coming out and also on marriage equality. We would prefer to get pieces based around other concerns unless the piece is really special or offers a new perspective. LGBT characters or themes must be central to the piece, and we are especially interested in reading plays that explore the experiences of LGBT people of color, trans experience, youth and seniors. Comedy is a plus.

We worked with a dramaturg this year and it was a very successful addition to the festival, especially for work that has not yet been produced or that might have needed additional attention. Do let us know if you would be open to using his services if we suggest it.

Theater for the New City Scratch Night

Scratch Night at TNC

Crystal Field and Theater for the New City (TNC) will present a varied schedule "Scratch Night” performance program, which offers the opportunity for artists to present work in progress to an audience for one night. Scratch Night started in the United Kingdom in 2000 as a way to show work in progress in an evolution of performances. At TNC, we will put our own spin on the idea to best serve our own theatre community and New York area audiences.

Our hope is that participating artists will learn something that will feed their work. And the best thing that can happen is that a piece of work will go forward into… either at TNC or elsewhere.

Scratch Night is looking for a variety of the most daring artists to try out their most cool thoughts on stage and the audience will help in the development by way of TNC’s scratch ballot. Scratch Nights will take place throughout the year on a varied schedule. All theatrical forms are welcome. All stages of development are welcome.

What are we looking for?

Original theatre, puppetry, performance art, music, dance, and mixed media collaborations. No set running time.

Plays In Progress Series Submissions

Athena Project is proud to announce the call for submissions for its Plays In Progress Series (PIP Series). This series will take place in Denver over the course of 3 weekends, in March 2016, as part of a larger arts festival celebrating women artists, including the yet-to-be named world premiere, winner of this year’s PIP Series. Four new plays will be selected based on a blind submission process and given a dramaturg, director, designers, cast and workshop presentation during the festival. One play from the 2016 PIP Series will win a full production to be produced in March of 2017, based on a combination of audience vote and board input. Scripts are being accepted online from now until midnight, June 19, 2015.

Submissions Guidelines

1. Playwright must be female and may only submit ONE full-length script.

2. The play must not ever have had a fully mounted production. Prior workshop presentations are permissible but the script must be a new version since the time of the workshop.

3. Submission must include:

--Full copy of script (without playwright contact info*)
--Character breakdown (without playwright contact info*)
--Short synopsis of script (300 word limit, without playwright contact info*)
--Resume

--Cover letter addressing what the playwright would like to accomplish with the workshop presentation and how she heard about the call for submissions

*Contact info must be listed ONLY on resume and cover letter, not on script or any other documents (submissions will be read blind). All documents should include the Title of the Play, but no playwright contact information.

4. Plays submitted without all supporting materials included will be disqualified.

5. We recommend the playwright be able to travel to the area for rehearsals as needed if selected (or may Skype in). Attendance at least one workshop production performance during the festival at the playwright's own expense is mandatory. We will select 4 playwrights to participate in the PIP Series and hope to strike a balance between local and national work. Exact rehearsal and performance schedules will be worked out with the director, dramaturg, and playwright after all plays are selected.

12 Peers Theater is accepting play submissions for a 2015 – 2016 New Play Podcast Series from April 10th – June 15th, 2015.

12 Peers Theater is accepting unsolicited submissions of new full-length plays to be recorded and released monthly on a podcast about and featuring new plays.  In an effort to maximize exposure for playwrights and assist them in securing full productions, 12 Peers Theater will record and release readings of new plays to be aired on our 12 Peers Podcast throughout late 2015 and 2016.

We understand that there are many forms of theatrical storytelling, but here are a few guidelines that will help you determine if your play is right for us.  We will not consider plays that have had a full production elsewhere.  

We will only accept full-length plays, no one-acts, collections of one-acts, or musicals.  

Due to recording limitations, plays should be able to be performed with no more than 6 actors (doubling permitted)  As a company we are drawn to plays with themes of social and cultural identity, plays that are politically, socially, and ethically relevant, and plays with mythic themes. We are also drawn to plays with a clear sense of dramatic action, an excellent use of language, and a creative use of theatrical resources.
