Diez Minutos 2016 seeks 10-minute plays

Players Workshop seeks plays for the Fourth Annual International 10-Minute Play Festival. This fully-staged festival will be in English, and will take place in late March of 2016 in the international arts center of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico — a World Heritage Site brimming with charm, history, and culture. San Miguel was voted Conde Nast Traveler Magazine 2013 "Best City in the World.”

There is no fee for submitting. Each playwright whose script is selected and performed will receive a $10 USD cash honorarium and two complimentary tickets. One play will be selected as the Audience Favorite and its playwright shall receive an additional $25 USD cash award. No other remuneration will be provided, and any playwright attending must do so at his or her own expense.

Submission Guidelines
  • Players Workshop may delete, without reading, any submission that does not comply with these rules. Only one play may be submitted per entrant. Send us your best!
  • Only the first 100 plays entered are guaranteed to be considered.
  • We’re asking for blind submissions again this year. 
  • The play may be a drama or comedy and must be on the theme of “Games People Play.” 
  • No monologues, musicals, or children’s plays, please.
The play must be submitted by email, as an attached PDF file. No MS Word files or other formats will be accepted. The subject line of your email should include your name and the title of the play.

The submission shall include all contact information for the playwright, including name, address, telephone number and email address on a separate title page; the script must be in standard play format, with a title page, a character listing, the setting, props, and any technical requirements or other production considerations. Your name must not appear on the script. The two files should be titled "Submission [Name Of Play]” and "Title Page [Name Of Play].”

The play must be in English and no longer than 10 pages in standard format, with a calculated running time of no less than eight minutes and no more than twelve minutes.

Submission period opens on August 1, 2015. Entries must be received prior to midnight U.S. Central Standard Time, August 31, 2015. No late submissions will be accepted because of transmission problems.

The play must be unpublished, but may have had previous productions. If the play has had previous productions, a production history must be included with the submission. The submitting playwright must own all rights to the play.

Selection of plays will be at the absolute discretion of the judges.

Selection of a play does not guarantee production. Producers may decline to produce a selected play because of casting, directing or any other consideration, in which case no payment will be due the playwright.

Selected entrants will receive a list of the festival scripts by email. Notification is expected to be made no later than December 1, 2015. Only playwrights whose plays were received in the first 100 submitted will receive first-round notification. Only playwrights whose plays have been selected for performance will receive “finalist” notification.

Producers reserve the right to consider additional plays not received in the first 100.

Scripts must relate to the theme but are not otherwise limited in subject matter or content. However, there must be no nudity, and suitability for performance before a general adult audience will be a factor in selection.

Plays are restricted to 4 or fewer characters. Small casts are preferable, as the stage size is modest, with minimal set, props, sound cues, and costuming. Our talent pool is composed mostly of actors aged 40 and older. This will be a factor in selection.

Entering playwrights grant the producers of Diez Minutos permission to perform the play a maximum of twelve times during the Diez Minutos 2016 festival, and to make as many copies of the script as are necessary for production. All other rights remain with the playwright.

Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA) Short Forms

Each day, it seems there are more and more calls for short plays, and developing a strong portfolio of short plays is one of the fastest ways to become a produced playwright. This class at Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA) will help you hone your short form skills.

Short plays require an ability to convey character, effective dialogue, and action without extensive exposition, and in this 10-week class, you'll learn how not to waste a single word. From this class, you'll take away the skills to craft surprising pieces of theater, regardless of length, that reflect something deeper about the world at large, and you'll be well on your way to compiling a portfolio of submission-ready short plays.

Generations residency

The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company makes an ongoing commitment to new theatrical work, from world premieres to playwright residencies. Generations is BETC's new play development program. The name comes from BETC's goals for the program: to welcome all generations into the theater to see new plays, and to empower playwrights to generate new work.

Each year, one playwright is chosen from a international applicant pool to join BETC in Boulder for a one-week residency, where the writer workshops the work-in-progress with a director, actors, and a dramaturg. Each residency culminates in a public reading. Generations is made possible in part by the Sustainable Arts Foundation.

Generations 2015-16:

BETC is now accepting submissions for our next Generations residency. In order to support the work of parent playwrights, BETC is seeking full-length plays, for a cast of seven actors or less, written by a parent with at least one child under 18 years of age as of September 1, 2015.

The winning playwright will receive

· a week-long workshop residency in Boulder, Colorado, with daily rehearsals, culminating in a staged reading of the selected script;

· the chance to rewrite and revise during the week as part of the script development experience;

· a stipend for travel and lodging;

· a $250 prize; and

· a $250 childcare stipend to defray the costs associated with childcare during the residency.

During the residency, the selected play will be rehearsed with a cast of professional actors, director, and dramaturg. The week will culminate in a public reading. The selected work will be considered for full production in a future BETC season. The residency will take place during the first two weeks of May 2016; specific date arrangements will be made directly with the winning playwright.

Competition submissions are due September 1, 2015.

Entry Guidelines:

Plays must be written in the English language. Plays that have been produced by Equity or professional companies or that have been published are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading, or non-professional production or that have been published as an actor's edition will be considered. Plays may not be under option or scheduled for professional production or publication as of September 1, 2015.

To enter our 2015-16 competition, please submit the following two files in PDF format by email to submissions@betc.org:

File 1: Cover sheet, containing within a two-page limit:
1. Contact information: name, phone, email, mailing address, and a paragraph bio for yourself and any other collaborators.
2. A brief synopsis of your play (500 words or less)
3. A brief production history of the work (if applicable)
4. Character descriptions

File 2: A 20-page dialogue sample. Please do not include your name anywhere in the sample file. Full-length scripts will not be accepted.

The application deadline is September 1, 2015. A shortlist of playwrights will be contacted in early October, and we will request a full-length draft of selected works at that time. Our winning playwright will be notified by December 1, 2015.

Talos Science Fiction Theatre Festival Call for Scripts

TALOS: the 1st Science Fiction Theatre Festival of London will take place 24-25 October 2015 in Chelsea Theatre in London. The festival is seeking submissions of short plays with science fiction elements. The deadline for script submissions is 15 August 2015.

Scripts should be no more than 30 minutes long in performance and may be original or previously produced. The accepted plays will be mainly science fiction but related genres [e.g. horror, contemporary fantasy] will also be considered. The scripts must be written in English. Translations are also welcome.

Terms and Conditions

1. TALOS welcomes script submissions in English. The scripts must be no longer than 30 minutes and be submitted as a PDF attachment to talosfest@gmail.com. Please include a short bio and a synopsis in the body of your email.

Bread & Roses Theatre Company seeks short plays

The in-house Bread & Roses Theatre Company (BRTC) has been running regular new writing night The Platform since October 2012 in what was originally nothing more than the upstairs function room at the Bread & Roses Pub. This was the project that inspired the transformation of the space and eventual launch of The Bread & Roses Theatre on the 1st of November 2014!

The Platform usually takes place two times per year and features a selection of some of the best new short plays out there. It has quickly established itself as an opportunity to discover, develop and explore new scripts, whilst also providing actors, directors and writers with an opportunity to showcase their work. The BRTC has since also gone on to produce their first full length production, a 5 star reviewed adaptation of Miss Julie.

The last submission round attracted over 150 submissions. Whilst we focus on UK based writers we are also happy to include, and have previously featured, writers from across the world. If you want to know more about our previous productions, check out our reviews and writer testimonials!

The Platform VIII will take place on Sunday 1st and Monday 2nd November 2015 and will also represent the First Year Anniversary Celebration of The Bread & Roses Theatre!

We are now accepting 5 to 20 minute short play submissions until midnight on 31st July 2015. Winning scripts will receive a professional performance on both nights and the winning writers will also get a guaranteed prize of £20 plus a share of profits made from ticket sales. Previously submitted scripts may be resubmitted, please note in the comments if you have also redrafted it since. We accept up to two scripts per writer per submission round. Please note we are not looking for submissions with directors or actors already attached. You may submit plays that have previously been produced elsewhere.

DEATHSCRIBE 2015

Each December, WildClaw produces the DEATHSCRIBE Festival of Horror Radio Plays. DEATHSCRIBE is an open submission, international festival and writing competition. Writers may submit up to two radio plays to DEATHSCRIBE in any given year.

DEATHSCRIBE 2015 will take place on December 7, 2015.

Submissions are now OPEN.

Each year we seek 10-minute radio scripts that are genuinely scary, imaginative, chilling, intelligent, suspenseful, horrific or downright grotesque. We put no restrictions on contestants as to content or tone, but keep in mind that we are a Horror Theatre. We take our horror seriously, and so should you.

5 scripts will be selected from all submissions. After being selected, there will be an opportunity for the authors to refine and revise these scripts (if deemed necessary) in collaboration with WildClaw Theatre Company. There will be a “Best of the Fest” award, with the winner chosen by a celebrity panel of judges on the night of performance to receive the coveted Bloody Axe Award. Previous winners include:

Deathscribe selections are “blind.” The title page should include the title of the script, names of all authors, and the address, phone and email address of the author(s). The subsequent pages must include only the manuscript title and page number and NO identifying personal information (name, address, email, etc.) or it will be disqualified.

Scripts must be ready to produce – all sound and music cues included. Details on format can be found below. Please do not submit a traditional stageplay with the instruction that “if we like it, you will be willing to adapt it.” Scripts must already be in radio format to be eligible.

Please be aware that these scripts, if chosen, will be performed by no more than 6 actors, therefore scripts with more characters will require double casting by the director of the piece.

Guidelines:
• Scripts must be no more than TEN MINUTES in length. (Generally speaking, a 10-minute radio play is NO LONGER than 15 pages.)
• Writers may submit up to two (2) scripts for Deathscribe consideration in any year. There is no fee to submit to Deathscribe.
• PDF format is strongly preferred. If PDF is not possible, then only MS Word please. All scripts must have a title page with all contact information, but no identifying information should appear anywhere else in the document. Submissions must be in a standard font and no less than 12 point.
• NO SCREENPLAYS. SCREENPLAYS WILL BE DISCARDED. WE KNOW THEM WHEN WE SEE THEM. (Nothing against screenplays. But this is a radio play festival.)

STORY CONTEST RULES AND GUIDELINES

When you send in your story, you must include in the body of your email

1. Confirmation that the monologue submitted is completely original to you. You are the present and exclusive and sole owner of all right, title, and interest in and to the story.

2. Confirmation that the monologue has not been published, used in an anthology, or winner of any other contests.

3. Confirmation that the monologue is a true story.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You may use fictional names in order to protect the identities of those involved in your story. If you do so, please include at the top of your monologue submission "Names of people and places have been fictionalized."


ENTRY FORMAT

1. One (1) entry per person (one monologue).

2. Scripts in Microsoft Word (.doc) are requested.

3. The monologue should be double-spaced and no longer than 750 words or 3 pages; written in English, or in your native tongue and accompanied by an English translation.

HIJABI MONOLOGUES GUIDE AND TIPS


1. The hijab is to be present visually (on stage) but not the story's main subject. This project is not about explaining why a Muslim wears or does not wear a headscarf; the process of veiling and unveiling; etc. On the other hand, stories about the first day you wore hijab to work; about when your five-year old son decided to wear hijab to school to be like his mom; about that perfect purple hijab you always wear for prayer; etc. may be considered.

2. In the utterly mundane (i.e. dinner with the in-laws, writing a letter, a moment of frustration when you couldn't find matching socks, a moment of fear when the lights went out, etc.), there can be a wonderful narrative. Some of the best stories reflect an eye to see the extraordinary in the very ordinary.

3. Specific details and local references to a school, neighborhood or city are a big plus. Do not shy away from using Islamic tropes and motifs (eg. "She could not stomach the flesh of her dead brother.") and/or using language that is Muslim (eg. "She broke her wudu."), regionally specific (eg. "I was bloody furious.") or culturally specific (eg. "Her dupatta was always freshly pressed.").

4. Stories about sexuality are fine but keep in mind that Muslim women's sexuality has been a popular subject for voyeurism. Muslim women have been represented as exotic, hyper-sexual, asexual and sexually repressed in popular European and North American literary and visual arts. Be creative!

5. As an exercise, highlight the elements that are specific to the narrator's voice. Then highlight the elements that are "universal." Both elements are important.

6. Read your monologue aloud. It should sound like a story--and less like a campaign speech, advertisement, sermon and/or spoken word poetry although you may incorporate these rhetorical styles into the voice(s) of character(s). Ask yourself, “Could this be performed by an actress?”

7. Consider how the story might resonate with existing Hijabi Monologues core stories. For examples, visit -

Hijabi Monologues Story Bank?**

The Hijabi Monologues production is a specially tailored weaving of the core monologues written by Sahar I. Ullah with local stories gathered through story contests and/or workshops, some of which are included in the HM Story Bank. The Hijabi Monologues Story Bank monologues are original works and eligible for inclusion in future HM Shows. Writers of these monologues include Kamilah A. Pickett, Komita Carrington, Kiran Tahir, Rima Zalghout, Rafiah Jones and Laila Achmad. Not all contest winners or local monologues showcased in past shows are included in the HM Story Bank.

Writer Guidelines For Studio C Artists Holiday Show

Please register your intention to send us a submission ASAP at http://goo.gl/forms/jAs0HNrXsQ so that we know how many submissions to expect and can plan accordingly.
  • Writers should submit one (1) completed One Act play (preferably in PDF format) no later than Friday, July 31st @ 5PM PST
  • Email your submission to submissions@studiocartists.com
  • Please include a logline, a synopsis, and a casting/character breakdown with your submission. 
  • No more than three (3) plays will be chosen by the One Act Series selection committee. 
  • Each play should be 20-25 minutes in length, maximum. Any play significantly over the allotted time will be required to be trimmed (definitely nothing longer than 30 minutes). Please don’t go by page count, as that can differ depending on writing utility (read aloud for best guess at play length). 
  • All works should be original – having never been produced in Los Angeles before. 
  • 2 characters minimum, 4 characters maximum. Any play with more than 4 characters will not likely be considered. 
  • We have access to a lot of actors in their 20’s and early 30’s. Please focus on this age range with the roles. 
  • Each one-act play should have a holiday theme (any holiday in November-December is fine). We’re looking for shows that put you in the holiday spirit – think “Miracle On 34th St.” or “It’s A Wonderful Life”. 
  • Each one-act play will take place in the same setting, a generic living room space. It will be decorated for the holidays and will be used to resemble a home, apartment, etc. Assume the set will be fairly simple as to accommodate multiple shows. Dressing will include things like a couch, a table, and a chair. Do not expect anything more than that to work with. 
  • Actors can make entrances from one door on the stage – and through the fourth wall (audience). 
  • Keep sound and lighting cues to a minimum – if not, we will cut them. 
  • Keep props to a minimum. They must be carried on and off by the actors as they make their entrances/exits. 
  • There will be no real food/drink allowed during the play – if the piece requires eating or drinking it must be pantomimed – so please consider this. 
  • Writers must be available for possible rewrites once the pieces are chosen, prior to rehearsals in September. 
  • Writers are welcome to visit the casting sessions for their piece if chosen (Directors have final say in Cast selections). 
  • Writers are welcome to sit in on any/all rehearsals once they are scheduled (any notes/comments should be given only to the Director – and never directly to the Actors).

FUTURE TEN FESTIVAL OF 10-MINUTE PLAYS

Future Tenant is now accepting submissions for our annual FUTURE TEN FESTIVAL OF 10-MINUTE PLAYS! Now in its 12th year, Future Ten is scheduled to run from November 6th-14th at Future Tenant in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. 

There is no fee for submission, and all playwrights are encouraged to submit. We are very interested in work from writers in the Pittsburgh areas, but we will consider writers from across the country. We will accept up to four submissions per writer; any submissions more than four will not be considered.

Overtime Theater Call for Submissions 2016

Devoted solely to producing new and original work, we are particularly interested in bold and innovative plays that are challenging and entertaining.

We are seeking unproduced original work, adaptations of films and novels, translations and adaptations of classic works, musicals, comedies, tragedies, melodramas, kitchen sink musical comedies, operas, light operas, operettas, soft rock operas, heavy metal boulevard farces and many other forms hitherto unknown.

If you can imagine it, then we will make it happen.

We are open to any genre, with a special emphasis on genres that are often neglected in theatre such as science fiction, adventure, superhero epics and cross-genre works, immersive environmental plays, or pieces that are truly uncategorizable.

While we are looking to nurture and develop local artists we are also open to giving voice to artists across Texas and to other artists national and international.

We are, in short, looking for exciting plays that will move the audience of today and perhaps be a beacon to audiences of the future.

Located between the Pearl Brewery complex and the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Overtime has been voted the favorite theater of readers of the San Antonio Current for six years in a row. The Overtime is home to two performing spaces, one of which is small while the other is quite cozy.

Compensation

Currently we do not have a stipend for playwrights.

Writers, directors, cast and crew are all compensated through an equal share of audience contributions and other donations to the “love bucket” which is divided at the end of a production’s run. Artistic staff and the board of the Overtime are all volunteers.

This is not an ideal situation, and it is hardly reflective of the value we believe art should have, but it is as fair and democratic a way we have of ensuring the survival of a theater for the people and by the people.


SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE AUGUST 1, 2015
Please submit your plays in PDF format.

We will accept full-length plays, “one-acts” and even shorter works that may be combined with other authors’ works for a full program.

We will even consider cycles of plays or anything else you can come up with.
Serials

We will accept submissions for serial pieces with the following requirements.

1. A completed pilot episode.

2. A series bible that defines characters and story arcs and an outline of the total run of the series.
3. A detailed synopsis for each of the following episodes.
4. An outline of the plan for scheduled completion of the serial season.
Movement Based Pieces/Improvisational pieces/Devised Pieces

We will consider forms of performance that are not “traditional” plays.

For these we will consider them in several forms.

1. For choreographic pieces (dance, ballet, etc.) we will consider pieces with a descriptive text.

2. If the artist is proposing to direct/perform then we will also like to see a sample of previous work and a full CV in addition to a descriptive synopsis of the piece.
3. For improvisational/devised pieces we will consider them based on a descriptive concept statement along with a full account of the process by which the proposed piece will be created.

In addition to the above we will consider other options for a play or performance that is not covered here. Please contact us with your proposals.

PLAY REQUIREMENTS
Playwrights of all ages, genders and ethnicities are encouraged to enter.
Plays must be between 5-10 pages, and no longer than ten minutes in length.
All play genres (drama, comedy, mystery, etc) are acceptable.

Playwrights are asked to explore a topic within the theme "Modern Lives". Topics may include, but are not limited to:

SELECTION, FEES AND NOTIFICATION
There is no fee to submit your play to the festival, however, accepted plays will be required to pay a $10 participation fee upon acceptance. Selected Playwrights may be notified on a rolling basis until all slots have been filled. If your play is selected you will be notified no later than August 15, 2015. Plays must not exceed 10 pages and should be written in standard play format. (one minute per page.) We highly recommend you keep your written play between 5-8 pages.

Playwrights may submit up to two original never performed plays between 5 and 10 minutes in length. Submitted Plays may not have received a stage reading or performance of any caliber (professional or nonprofessional) prior to the festival dates.

PERFORMING YOUR PLAY
Participating Playwrights will be required to create and hire a production team; a director, cast and narrator (for stage direction), and must absorb all related costs. No props will be permitted. Costumes are acceptable. Use of chairs and music stands only. The Festival will supply a moderator, stage manager and technical director for each performance series. The Festival will run a mandatory Tech/Dress Rehearsal the same day of each sessions scheduled performance. Director, actors, and narrator must be present for the Tech/Dress Rehearsal. Playwrights are welcome and encouraged to attend. One seat will be reserved for the playwright for his/her play's performance session.

FESTIVAL SCHEDULE
Saturday October 10, 2015 - Monday October 19, 2015.

Playwrights may not select their date of performance or venue. Notification of date and venue will be assigned. Notification will occur via email on or before August 15th 2015.

Each day of the festival will feature 10 plays per day (2 sessions of 5 plays each). All performances will be at NYC venues easily accessible by public transportation. Session running times are approximately 50 minutes with no intermission. Weekend festival dates may run in the afternoon or evening. Weekday performances will run 7:00 pm (session 1) and 8:30 pm (session 2).

THIRD ANNUAL UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS- AMHERST NEW PLAY LAB: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

WHAT IS THE UMASS AMHERST NEW PLAY LAB?
The Play Lab is a UMass Department of Theater mainstage production, running from March 20 – April 2, 2016. One playwright will be chosen for a two week residency during this period. These residencies are structured around a series of public staged readings directed and dramaturged by UMass Amherst graduate students and performed by undergraduate actors. The two week workshop term allows time for exploration in rehearsal and the generation of new material.

WHAT IS THE UMASS AMHERST NEW PLAY LAB’S MISSION?
Our mission this year is to develop two exceptional new plays: one from our current visiting artist Kim Euell, and the other selected through this call. The Play Lab is process oriented, focusing on an experience that is educational, exploratory, and collaborative. The workshops will have minimal technical/design support, but the emphasis will be on presenting and responding to the text. The UMass Amherst Department of Theater's commitment to new play development is internationally recognized, from our groundbreaking work with New WORLD Theater to our recent collaborations with artists like MJ Kaufman, Michael Yates Crowley, Will Power, Marcus Gardley, and Constance Congdon. We approach new play development with rigor and sensitivity and we're seeking playwrights who are as passionate about this process as we are.

WHAT SUPPORT DOES THE UMASS AMHERST NEW PLAY LAB PROVIDE?
We offer a $750 honorarium per playwright. Accommodations will be provided. Playwrights are responsible for booking their travel arrangements, and will be reimbursed for a portion of the cost. The playwright may be asked to give a playwriting workshop to students for an additional honorarium.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF PLAYWRIGHTS DURING RESIDENCY?
The playwright is expected to be in residency for the full 2 week workshop period. During this time, the playwright may provide as many changes as desired. The playwright is expected to attend nightly rehearsals and the three readings. The playwright can choose to participate in audience talkbacks. Playwrights may be asked to meet or discuss the play with the team prior to residency as available.

WHAT KINDS OF PLAYS CAN I SUBMIT?
Plays must be full-length. Musicals are not accepted. Submissions may have had a previous reading, workshop, or production; as a rule, though, the Play Lab exists to develop relatively new work, so unproduced material will be given priority in our selection.
This year we are specifically seeking plays and playwrights that:
offer something fresh, bold, or even dangerous in their form, style, or themes
center around issues relevant to a campus community
will benefit from a workshop with undergraduate performers and graduate student staff
may give voice to underrepresented communities (e.g. LGBTQA folks, people of color, women, etc.)

HOW DO I SUBMIT MY PLAY(S)?
Submit manuscripts to umassplaylab@gmail.com. All documents must be submitted in .pdf format; plays formatted otherwise will be disqualified. Please include a concise playwright’s bio and a short summary of how you think your play might benefit from a developmental reading.

London Horror Festival

Calling all writers and horror fans! To celebrate our 5th year and as part of our dedication to support new work in the horror theatre world, this year the London Horror Festival and the Etcetera Theatre are teaming up to host a short playwriting competition with the guiding theme ‘It’s not what it seems …’

We are looking for unique, dark and intimate storytelling to terrify and disturb our opening night audience. We welcome entries from anyone and everyone, whether you are a first time scribe or a seasoned horror theatre pro. If you have a penchant for writing and a love for horror we can’t wait to hear from you.

Submissions are open from now until Saturday 15th August, after which the festival team will shortlist 3 plays to be staged by a professional cast and crew at The Etcetera Theatre, one of London’s top fringe venues and official home of the London Horror Festival. The plays will be performed on Monday 5th October, at the opening night of the 2015 festival.

And for one lucky writer, there will be an amazing special prize… The overall winning play, which will be chosen and announced on the night by a special guest judge, will be automatically granted a 3 night performance slot at the Black Box Festival in January 2016, with the opportunity to stage a fully developed production of their play!

Below are the competition requirements:

• Submissions should be between 10-15 minutes long
• Plays should be written to the theme of ‘It’s not what it seems…’ and fit into the horror genre. Be imaginative with this! The more creatively this is interpreted the better!
• The play must be set in one room only
• The play must be limited to two characters.
• To give you an idea of the performance space the specs of the Etcetera are as follows:
– The stage is 5m wide x 3m70 deep.
– Two entrances are downstage left (main theatre entrance) and upstage left (to the dressing room).
– The dressing room links back to the main corridor so both entrances can be used during the performance.
– We have a number of furniture items available (chairs, stools, bench, tables, sofa)
– Due to health and safety regulations, the fire exit signs have to be on so be aware the theatre can’t go to complete black.
• Submission deadlines are Saturday 15th August, 2015. Entries received after this time will not be considered.
• Shortlisted plays will be announced in September.
• Plays should be submitted by email, in Word or PDF formats.

South Street Players (southstreetplayers.org) is seeking short (20 minutes or less), original, one-act plays for its 5thAnnual Tri-State Theatre Festival. The event will take place October 16-18, 2015 in Spring Lake, NJ.

The festival, which receives about 300 plays annually, is committed to presenting the finest and most unique original one-acts written by local playwrights from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The event also serves as an artistic fundraiser, with all proceeds going to SSP to help the group maintain its commitment to producing high-quality, extremely engaging theatre experiences for the 2015-16 season… and beyond.

Submission Rules and Process:

Seeking original comedic and dramatic one-act plays from playwrights currently living in the Tri-State area only (NJ, NY and PA).

Plays must be 20 pages or less. Submissions of longer than 20 pages will be declined for consideration.

Plays must be in standard playscript format.

4th Annual nuVoices New Play Festival

We are currently accepting submissions for our fourth annual nuVoices New Play Festival. Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte envisions nuVoices as a springboard to catapult new plays to the national stage through our existing relationship with the National New Play Network (NNPN). We also strive to develop nuVoices into a program to mentor the next generation of professional artistic talent in the Charlotte region.

Diana Grisanti’s RIVER CITY, the winner of our second annual nuVoices Festival, was selected as a Rolling World Premiere by NNPN. It had a total of three premiere productions during the 2014-15 season with Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte serving as the lead theatre in that effort. This success was accomplished in only the festival’s second year, proving that we are on our way to fulfilling our goals for nuVoices.

The goals of nuVoices are three-fold:

  • To celebrate and cultivate new plays by emerging American playwrights.
  • To incubate professional artistic talent in the Charlotte region.
  • To educate the public on the process of taking new plays from page to stage.

nuVoices was created by Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte to honor and encourage emerging playwrights in the American Theatre. Four playwrights will be awarded a $500 honorarium, with transportation and housing provided, and a week-long residency at the theatre January 10-17, 2016. The residency will encompass a four-day festival that will feature two public, script-in-hand readings for each of the four plays selected. Following the end of the festival, the festival winner, who will be determined by a panel of audience members, arts professionals, and Actor’s Theatre staff, will be invited by the theatre to have a full production mounted in the 2016-2017 season.

Eligibility

- Scripts must be unpublished and have not received a fully staged, professional production at the time of the festival. Workshops and readings are acceptable.

- Selected playwrights must be in attendance for the festival, which will be held January 10-17, 2016

- Previous submissions to the nuVoices Festival will NOT be considered

Guidelines for Submission

Please note the following when preparing your submission:

- All submissions MUST be received electronically.

- One script submission per playwright

- Full-length, original plays only (no musicals, translations, adaptations or children's plays)

Script submissions must be made through our online submission form. Email submissions and submissions submitted by mail will not be accepted. Your documents should be submitted as PDFs and consist of the following:

1. Your resume, which should include:

- Your name, contact information, and mailing address

- You may also provide contact info for your agent or representation, if applicable.

2. Your script with observance to the following:

- All personal information that would identify you as the playwright should be removed from the script. This includes the title page and any page headers or footers that may include your name. If applicable, remove the contact information for your agent or representation as well.

- Text in 12pt type and in a plain font, such as Times New Roman

- Include the title and page numbers in the header or footer on each page

The Yale Drama Series is seeking submissions for its 2016 playwriting competition. The winning play will be selected by the series' current judge, distinguished playwright Nicholas Wright. The winner of this annual competition will be awarded the David Charles Horn Prize of $10,000, publication of his/her manuscript by Yale University Press, and a staged reading at Lincoln Center Theater. The prize and publication are contingent on the playwright’s agreeing to the terms of the publishing agreement.


There is no application form or entry fee. Please follow these guidelines in preparing your manuscript:

1. This contest is restricted to plays written in the English language. Worldwide submissions are accepted.

2. Submissions must be original, unpublished full-length plays written in English. Translations, musicals, and children's plays are not accepted. The Yale Drama Series is intended to support emerging playwrights. Playwrights may win the competition only once.

3. Playwrights may submit only one manuscript per year.

4. Plays that have been professionally produced or published are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading, or non-professional production or that have been published as an actor’s edition will be considered.

5. Plays may not be under option or scheduled for professional production or publication at the time of submission.

The LIC One Act Festival is now accepting plays for its 3rd annual. The Secret Theatre seeks to promote new work and emerging playwrights through our annual One Act Festival. We also promote playwrights through publishing anthologies of the winning plays; all of the final plays including the festival winner are offered a non-exclusive publishing agreement we have currently published five volumes of short plays.

No fee to submit or produce.

· $200 Cash Prize for Best Play

· $100 Cash Prize for Best director

· $50 Cash Prize for Best Actor

· $50 Cash Prize for Best Actress

· Each Play is guaranteed 3-5 performances

· The final selected plays are eligible for publishing in Top Secret Books’ The LIC One Act Festival Vol 3 on a non-exclusive basis.

Guidelines:
  • Plays must be between 10 – 20 minutes in length. Preference given to plays that have not been produced before.
  • Playwrights are responsible for selecting director and cast. (We may be able to help you if you do not have a director but preference will be given to playwrights who can provide their own directors and actors.)
  • Easy to produce. (If you have a play which for instance includes a swimming pool, a large amount of sets and props, or anything else too elaborate or is impossible to cast we may reject it)
  • Please submit plays in PDF or Word format only
  • We will divide selected plays into three programs which will play in an alternating order over three weeks. 

Selected Playwrights will be informed July 27th.

PHOENIX THEATRE’S HORMEL NEW WORKS FESTIVAL is accepting full length play submissions for 2016.

PHOENIX THEATRE announces its 18th Hormel New Works Festival, and its 9th national playwrights’ competition. The New Works Festival presents four staged readings of plays and musicals each summer at Phoenix Theatre, the oldest arts organization in Arizona and the largest Phoenix-based producing theatre. Playwrights whose work has been presented include Beau Willimon, Y York, Donna Hoke, Kris Bauske, Jack Heifner, Janet Neipris, Craig Bohmler, Hal Corley, James McClure, Rich Orloff, Eric Coble, Dale Wasserman, & Richard Warren.

The New Works festival is accepting submissions for the following:

Full Length Plays: Both dramatic and comedic. Plays should be original, un-produced full length, bound scripts that are finished enough to profit from a workshop reading by professional actors but still open to revision. Do not send synopsis or screen plays. No multiple authors or collaborations will be accepted. Scripts may not exceed 100 pages of dialogue and must be bound in traditional script form. Cast size must be limited to 5 characters or less and no more than 3 locations. Full length plays would receive a staged reading.

Full Length Musicals: Musicals should be original, un-produced full length, bound script and score. CD’s of studio recordings are accepted as well. Musicals should be finished enough to profit from a workshop reading by professional actors but still open to revision. No more than 3 authors (book writer, lyricist and composer) will be accepted. Scripts may not exceed 100 pages of dialogue and must be bound in traditional script form. Cast size must be limited to 8 actors (could play multiple characters) or less and no more than 5 locations. Full Length Musicals would receive a staged reading. Submission Fee $10. Please send hard copy to mailing address below. *Fees are waived for members of NAMT, Dramatist Guild and/or WGA.

Short Plays: 10 to 45 minutes: (NO FEE REQUIRED) Plays should use 5 or less actors, comedy or drama, (please no musicals). Selected short plays will receive a staged reading in our annual Evening of Short Plays. Please email submissions to r.harper@phoenixtheatre.com (Robbie Harper: Associate Artistic Director) Please put Short Play submission in subject line. Please make sure that the play is submitted as a PDF. No more than 3 submissions per playwright are accepted. Travel and lodging not included.

Songs for our Composer/Lyricist cabaret: (NO FEE REQUIRED) We are looking to feature new voices in the American Musical Theatre.


  • Please submit 3 complete songs: 1 ballad, 1 up-tempo and one production number. (preferred but not required)
  • Include sheet music and/or recording of the songs. Recordings do not need to be professional recordings. If sending recording through mail, please have song list written on song sheet included with your CD.
  • Please submit by email, please use QuickTime, WMP (Mp3 or Mp4) and/or DROP BOX. Please have files labeled and saved as PDF. Include Composer/Lyricist Cabaret in the subject line.
  • Please let us know whether the musical is complete or in development or just a sampling of your work.
  • Include draft of libretto (if available) or a possible synopsis. Please have these files as PDF.
  • Songs will be featured in a cabaret setting with 2 other composers.
  • Composers will receive airfare and housing and are requested to attend the cabaret.

For the Full Length scripts selected, we offer a staged reading, with professional actors, directors and dramaturges, to be held May 2nd – May 15th 2016 in Phoenix.

If your script/musical is selected, you must be available to be in residence for a 10 day time span during the span of the festival.

Please make checks, money orders, etc., payable to Phoenix Theatre.

Payments must be included with your script. Do not send cash. Scripts will NOT be returned.

Deadline for submission postmarked by: August 1st 2015

“This Round’s On Us” TRAVEL TIME

We are accepting new works for our quarterly 2015 This Round’s On Us festivals, each of which will focus on certain broad eras of the 20th Century (see below). The plays do not necessarily have to be set in these time periods, but they should at least be informed by the social, cultural and/or political happenings of the time. Whether you find inspiration in the movies, music or theater of a particular decade, the major events that formed the historical narrative or which have been ignored by history, or the everyday lives of people in the bygone days of the not-so-long-ago, you can send your 10-minute play to NylonSubmissions@gmail.com

1812 Productions Submission Guidelines

1812 is always on the lookout for new comedies and is happy to consider plays, solo pieces and devised work.

Agents and Professional Recommendation
1812 gratefully accepts scripts and/or video from literary agents, theater professionals and artists with whom we have existing relationships. Please contact Producing Artistic
Director, Jennifer Childs, prior to sending your materials at jen@1812productions.org.

Don’t have an agent?
Please e-mail the following information to artistic@1812productions.org.

• Synopsis of play/piece (no more than one page)
• Bio of playwright/artist
• Cast size and production/workshop history of play/piece
• The first 10 pages of your script

If you are a solo or devising artist and your piece does not have a formal “script”, please let us know if you have video available and we will contact you about sending it to us.
Similarly, if you are a playwright submitting a musical and would like to include a demo, let us know and we’ll contact you about the best way to send it to us.

Please allow two months for the review process of your script and video samples.

Some submission guidance for playwrights and artists seeking production.
• 1812’s mission is comedy. We only produce comedy and therefore do not accept
submissions of drama or tragedy. That said, we have an expansive view of what comedy is, what it can do and the kinds of subjects it can tackle. We are interested in all kinds of
comedy – comedy with an edge, comedy with a heart, dark comedy, slapstick comedy,
farce, romantic comedy, musical comedy – you name it.
• Please no holiday themed pieces. We produce our own original work during the holiday season every year so do not have a need for anything to program during that time.
• While we are happy to accept political comedies, they are tricky for us. Each season we produce our own original political humor show entitled This Is the Week That Is. We will always consider politically themed work but most often are looking for other types of work to fill out our season and give our audience a variety of comic experiences.

July Short Play Lab

Dear Friend in the Theatre,

Whether you've thought about doing a short play in New York but have never tried, or if you're a regular at such events around town, please give a thought to producing a show in the July Short Play Lab. Not only do you rub shoulders with your fellow short-play playwrights, but you get to showcase your work to people you don't know yet. Our Labs are always well-attended, and they can lead to other festivals and events that we produce, such as the Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival and the Midtown International Theatre Festival (visit our website: www.midtownfestival.org for submission opportunities and requirements). The rules for submitting to July's Short Play Lab are easy-peasy:

  • Deadline is July 10. 
  • Notification will be soon after submission, depending on number of submissions. The sooner you get your script in, the more time you have to prepare. Get that script in pronto!
  • Plays should be 1 - 10 pp. in standard playscript format.* (The shorter the better; shorter plays get priority.) Include a title page, as the first page of the script, with your contact info (only means of contact is by email). 
  • Submit scripts in a MS Word document or PDF file. 
  • You produce the play whether or not you live in New York. The SPL provides the theatre. This Lab will take place at Roy Arias Theatre, 7th Ave., New York, NY 10036. 
  • Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.) 
  • Keep production values to a minimum: costumes and hand props are okay. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table. You can't leave your stuff in the theatre overnight.
  • Scripts requiring the use of guns are not accepted. 
  • We provide a board op, box office, and venue management.
  • There are no fees. The SPL keeps the door. 
  • Tickets are $20. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps.
  • There will be a tech rehearsal in the daytime on Saturday, July 25. The production dates are Saturday, July 25 - Sunday, July 26
  • Every play gets 2 performances, 1 on Sat. and 1 on Sun. Each play will be part of 1 of 2 programs: Program A or Program B, but not both. Program A takes place at 7 pm Sat. and 4 pm Sun. Program B takes place at 9 pm Sat. and 2 pm Sun. 
  • We don't do staged readings. Be off-book, please! Plays not off-book during tech will be removed from the line-up. 
  • THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTION IN EACH PROGRAM RECEIVES A CASH PRIZE OF $75. Winners are determined by polling patrons after the performance. We reserve the right to break ties.
  • *12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions. 

The SPL is a lot of fun and a good way to see your work on its feet in a supportive environment. It's also a great way to see actors and directors at work, so you can recruit people for later productions.
