Fall Writing Classes at Primary Stages ESPA!

Fall 2016 classes at Primary Stages ESPA are now open for enrollment! We're thrilled to announce this semester’s lineup of opportunities in our writing department:

This 10-week class will guide you through the development of your first draft, providing concrete deadlines, constructive feedback, and a collaborative environment that will encourage you to get your ideas on the page.
Annie MacRae (Associate Artistic Director, Atlantic Theater Company)
Michael Walkup (Producing Director, Page 73)
A. Rey Pamatmat (Writer, House Rules; Co-Director, Mi-Ya Writer's Lab)
Sofia Alvarez (Writer, Friend Art at Second Stage)
Bess Wohl (Writer, Small Mouth Sounds at Ars Nova)
Kara Lee Corthron (Writer, Julius By Design at Fulcrum Theater, "Kings" on NBC)

Melissa Ross (Writer, Of Good Stock at MTC, Nice Girl at Labyrinth)
This new class is for those with complete (or nearly complete!) first drafts who are ready to hear the play in full and embark on strategic rewrites.

Edwin Sanchez (Writer, Barefoot Boy with Shoes On at Primary Stages)
Whether you choose to embark on a rewrite of your entire play or focus on individual scenes, writing exercises and in-class discussion will inspire you to ask new questions of your play, look at it from various angles, and deconstruct it with your fellow writers

Leah Nanako Winkler (Writer, Kentucky at EST)
Developing a strong portfolio of short plays is one of the fastest ways to become a produced or even published playwright. In this class, you’ll learn how not to waste a single word, cut mercilessly for the sake of the story, think outside of the box of structure, and have some fun.

Kate Cortesi (Screenwriter, New Line Cinema)
In this 10-week class, you will apply the concepts of character development, visual storytelling, theme, plot, and dialogue to your own original script. Class time will be devoted to the development and discussion of new stories as well as screenplays-in-progress, with assignments and feedback tailored to the needs of your project.

Ken Urban (Writer, The Happy Sad at The Public)
This class is for playwrights who want the tools to transition from stage to screen. Writing for television has the potential to be not only artistically satisfying, but lucrative as well.

Kate Wetherhead (Writer, Director, Creator of "Submissions Only"; Actor, Broadway's Legally Blonde and ...Spelling Bee)
Over the course of this 10-week class, our studios will transform into a TV writer’s room as you develop the first season of your very own dramatic or comedic web series with the creator of “Submissions Only”, Kate Wetherhead.

Jill Rafson (Director of New Play Development, Roundabout Theater Company)
In this 2-day workshop, Jill Rafson (who personally shepherded the original commission, development, Off-Broadway and Tony-winning run of the Pulitzer-nominated The Humans) will help you conquer the overwhelming task of writing about yourself and your work.
