Little Black Dress seeks 10-minute plays

web site

Submissions are now being accepted from awesome female playwrights for consideration in this year's festival. This festival utilizes a peer-review process for evaluating submissions, so please make sure to read over the following guidelines carefully before submitting.

This year's festival theme is Hot Mess. Playwrights are invited to submit short plays and/or monologues written on this theme. In the past we've had great success with short scene lets as well (10 minute plays comprised of a couple of scenes, which we can sprinkle throughout the lineup)

LBDI strongly suggests you do not submit plays or monologues longer than ten minutes. Keep in mind that in all instances, shorter is truly better. Plays running longer than ten minutes stand very little chance of making it into the festival as we strive to produce as many playwrights as possible.

Little Black Dress INK utilizes a peer review process for evaluating plays. By submitting to this fest, you agree to participate in this unique opportunity to help select plays for production.

  • Once our submission window is closed, you will receive a selection of plays to read and score using the LBDI online eval form. You MUST read and submit your evaluations by the required date in order for your play to remain in consideration.
  • Submitted works will be read by other participating playwrights and LBDI artistic personnel. But submitting to the festival, you agree to share your work for review in this process.

Submission materials must be emailed to LBDI by December 10, 2016 and should include:
The following information in the body of your email:

  • Your name
  • The title of your play
  • Your contact information *It is very important that you use a reliable email address as all correspondence will be done via email!
  • A blind PDF of your script - do NOT include your name anywhere on the scripts!
  • Email materials to submissions@LittleBlackDressINK.org

LBDI will be producing readings of the top scoring plays nation-wide. The top eight to ten scoring plays will also move on to full production with Little Black Dress INK.

New Works Festival 2017 Script Submission

web site

Each year, Kitchen Dog selects six new plays from hundreds of submissions to be part of our New Works Festival. Selected scripts receive 15-20 hours of rehearsal, one public reading in June, and a $100 honorarium for the playwright. As Founding Members of the National New Play Network, it is our goal to showcase an exciting, diverse, and inclusive slate of plays that reflect the next phase of new work coming to the fore in the American theater and beyond. This year marks our 19th annual festival of new plays. In a continued effort to go green, we are only accepting submissions through the New Play Exchange (NPX). If you are unfamiliar with NPX or how to submit a play through the new opportunity module, please scroll down for tips.

We invite playwrights to submit full-length scripts that have had no more than one production. This is more of a showcase opportunity than a developmental one, so scripts should be close to production-ready, especially since we are unable to provide travel funds. Plays that call for five or fewer actors are ideal, but not mandatory. We ask that all scripts speak to Kitchen Dog’s mission. Only one submission per playwright will be accepted.

The web-based NPX is the most efficient way to get your work in front of hundreds of new play professionals across the country. This platform allows us to easily receive your plays, and to recommend them to our colleagues in the field. While we are only able to present six plays as part of our Festival, we are committed to writing recommendations in NPX for our top 25 finalists.

Only electronic submissions will be considered – no hard copies or emailed submissions accepted.

DEADLINE is December 5th, 2016.
If you have questions about submitting your play to us through NPX, please contact haley@kitchendogtheater.org

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT PLAYWRIGHTS: Get details on how to submit your plays for our annual PUP FEST.

HOW TO USE NPX to SUBMIT YOUR PLAY

1. Go to www.newplayexchange.org and create a Writer account.
2. Once you've set up your profile, upload a full draft of the play you want to send to Kitchen Dog. Samples are not eligible for any NPX opportunities.
3. You'll get an e-mail from NPX telling you that your play is eligible (this can take up to 24 hours, but is usually much faster).
4. Make sure you're logged into NPX in your browser, click on the link in the email, review our criteria again - just to make sure - then click the big blue "tag my play" button.

Urban Stages CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS THE JANUARY PLAYS

web site

An evening of 10-minute plays
NYC/Metropolitan Area Playwrights

Dear Playwright,

You are invited to submit an original 10-minute play to Urban Stages’ THE JANUARY PLAYS, a new opportunity under the auspices of Urban Stages’ Development Program.

THE JANUARY PLAYS challenges your creativity to write an original play using the month of January as the springboard, subject or theme. Think of holidays and observances in January – New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, and Chinese New Year. January is also National Glaucoma Awareness Month, National Blood Donor Month, and National Mentoring Month. The Golden Globe Awards are on January 17, and Holocaust Memorial Day is observed on January 27. Or think outside the box! Perhaps your play is inspired by a celebrity who was born in January (Elvis Presley, Al Capone, Albert Schweitzer) or who died that month (Audrey Hepburn, Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel).

We are seeking plays written in any style that reveal a fresh plot, sufficient conflict and a running time of 10 minutes, maximum. Plays are due at midnight on Saturday, December 10.

The first 100 submissions will be considered for programming. Selected plays will be presented as a staged reading at Urban Stages’ 74-seat theatre located at 259 West 30th Street in Manhattan. Performances will be Sunday, January 8th @ 2:00 & 4:00. Are you ready? Here are the guidelines.

Please read carefully!

SCRIPT GUIDELINES:
· The springboard, subject or theme for your play must be the month of January.
· Write for a cast of 2-3 actors.
· We strongly encourage scripts that can be staged without relying on stage directions. If stage directions are necessary, please keep them to a minimum.
· Your script will be presented as a staged reading in accordance with AEA guidelines. Keep production values to a minimum. Standard set pieces will be available. Costumes are at the discretion of the director and the willing cooperation of the actors. No hand props can be used. Remember, less is more!
· Plays should be in standard script format: 12 point font, 1” margins on all sides, and character names on a separate line. Be sure to number all pages.
· Submit scripts in MS-Word - preferred - or PDF format.
· Scripts longer than 10 pages – title and character breakdown pages are not counted – will NOT be considered. Regardless of the number of pages, the running time MUST be no more than 10 minutes!
· You may only submit one script for consideration.
· Playwrights must attend both performances of the staged reading on January 8th.
· We encourage you to attend rehearsals, if possible. The schedule will be determined later.
· The deadline for script submission is midnight, Saturday, December 10.

We strongly encourage original scripts developed for this presentation. Do not submit a play that has been previously produced.

GENERAL GUIDELINES:
· Urban Stages presents the play. We provide the actors, directors, stage manager, rehearsal space and the theatre (located at 259 West 30th Street).
· ALL participants are donating their time and talent. There is no fee or cost to the playwright.
· Each playwright and director will attend the staged readings of their script in designated seating.
· Every play gets two performances on the same day.

Please make sure you follow all submission requirements.

HOW TO SUBMIT:
· Email your scripts to Bara@urbanstages.org.
· Write in the subject line: THE JANUARY PLAYS / Your Name
· In the body of the email send:
o Your complete contact information – name, mailing address, email address and phone number
o A one-line summary of the action of your play, including how your script relates to the month of January.
· You will be contacted regarding your play’s status by mid-late December.

If you have any questions, use the email address above. For more information on Urban Stages, see our website at www.urbanstages.org. We look forward to hearing from you!

2017 ARTIST AS ACTIVIST TWO-YEAR FELLOWSHIP

Through that lens we are seeking proposals from activist artists who are pursuing ambitious creative projects that directly tackle the issue of mass incarceration.

Applying lessons from the inaugural round of fellowship applications, the foundation decided to narrow the focus of future open calls by inviting projects addressing a specific issue or theme. Theatre InspiraTO's 12th Playwriting Contest is now open

web site

Deadline to submit is November 20, 2016 (11:59 pm E.S.T.)
Theme: Grow Up

1. This year's creative challenge: Grow Up. The theme "Grow Up" must be an integral part of the play.

You decide: Grow Up! Stop speculating, take action. Decrease your immaturity. Stop daydreaming. Become an adult.

You decide: Grow Up! Aim for what society believes is adult behavior. Lose your child-like wonder. Become pragmatic, sensible and rational. Lose your curiosity.

2. The play must be a ten-minute play. You must submit online by November 20, 2016. There are no fees. Once you submit you will be taken to a page confirming that we have received your submission. You may only submit one play.

The contest is open to anyone (any part of the world) without geographic or age restrictions.

The story can be a comedy, a drama, a parody, absurd or anything in between (in English only). We accept any style except musicals. If you need more ideas on writing to this year's theme click here.

The cover page should have the title of the play, the playwright's name and the list of characters. The pages should be numbered. The format should be easy to read. We accept previously produced plays (but not plays that have produced in InspiraTO before). The playwright must own the rights to the play up to June 10, 2017 (i.e. the script cannot be owned by a publisher).

We are particularly interested in scripts that aren't afraid to make bold choices: quality writing backed by imaginative staging. Only those playwrights whose plays have been selected will be notified by January 1, 2017.

The plays will be selected by a committee from the Toronto theatre community. If selected, your play will be performed in Toronto, Canada from June 1 - June 10, 2017. Between eighteen to twenty four, ten-minute plays will be selected and performed. 1st Prize: $500 CDN. Should your play be selected for inclusion in the festival, you are giving the non-exclusive right to Theatre InspiraTO to produce and perform the play in the 12th Annual InspiraTO Festival in Toronto (Canada's largest ten-minute play festival), in June 2017. The InspiraTO Festival will find the cast, crew and market your play. Authors retain copyright and full ownership of their plays.

3. The submission must be a play. A ten-minute play is distinct from a sketch, or a skit; it is a compact play, with a beginning, middle and an end. You need a character facing obstacles in pursuit of some specific goal. You need rising action, conflict, and a climactic moment and your play must tell a complete story.

Generally speaking, scripts (including the stage directions, character names and dialogue) that are over 1,900 words are more than ten minutes long on stage. This does not mean that all plays under 1,900 words are under ten minutes, so be wise: use Word Count and read the play out loud while timing the length (including all pauses). You don't want your hard work rejected because it was too long.

Get inspired. See your story come to life! You must submit your play online.

To submit your play email: inspiratoplays@gmail.com
Attach your play in a PDF or Word document (Mac users please note: make sure that the document can be opened on a PC).

In the subject line write: 12th InspiraTO Contest.

In the body of the email please state (copy and paste the following):
  • Name:
  • Address:
  • Phone:
  • Email:
  • Website (optional):
  • Play Title:
  • Brief synopsis of play (under 100 words):
  • Has the play been produced before (we stage previously produced plays)?
  • If so, where?
  • Short Bio (under 100 words):

Playwriting Group and New Play Festival

web site

Athena Theatre invites you to submit to “Athena Writes,” an emerging playwrights’ group assembled for a one-year exploration of the theme: “A New Memory,” and centered on Athena Theatre’s commitment to supporting new work which pushes at the boundaries of live theatre.

We especially encourage playwrights with an eye for diverse characters, strong points of view, and action focused dialogue to apply.

As a part of “Athena Writes,” playwrights will meet twice a month on Tuesdays (or a date that works best for the group), beginning in mid-January 2017, for three hours, to discuss the year’s theme, share new work and talk playwriting and the business of theatre. Playwrights will be asked to write a short, 10-minute play for production at the New Play Festival currently scheduled at a NYC theatre in Spring 2017. They will also spend the year working on a full length piece on this year’s theme. The playwright group will be facilitated by Athena Theatre Company’s 2017 playwright-in-residence, Nora Sorena Casey.

All playwrights will offer a ten-minute play at the play festival. Athena Theatre will provide the theater space and PR outreach; playwrights will be responsible for any specialty costumes, props or scenic items. The compilation of all ten-minute plays creating in residence will be submitted for publication consideration.

Those selected will be asked for an admission fee to be a part of “Athena Writes,” emerging  playwrights’ group 2017 is $125. This contribution goes directly to theatre rental, actor and crew stipends for the New Play Festival and the Year-End Staged Reading.

The playwrights’ full-length plays will also be considered for full production by Athena Theatre in its next season. The next year’s playwright-in-residence will also be chosen from this group of playwrights.

We will have guest dramaturges throughout the year to give feedback on the new pieces. We will also keep playwrights apprised of all play submission opportunities. The meeting space is at the Dramatists Guild Fund and playwrights will be able to hear their work read out loud. The three hour meetings will comprise of discussion about individual playwrights’ projects, as well as readings of new work, where playwrights will cast (from the other writers) and hear their work read aloud.

Athena Theatre believes that a play cannot be fully understood until the words hit the ear of an audience. This process will allow playwrights to deepen their understanding of their own work, as well as glean ideas and approaches from their fellow playwrights.

Playwrights will be asked to concentrate on both their ten-minute piece, as well as their full-length piece throughout the year.  At the end of the year, 10-minute excerpts from each full-length play will be presented as a staged reading at a NYC venue TBA.

To be considered for “Athena Writes” 2017 please submit the following by December 6th, 2016 to Founding Artistic Director, Veronique Ory at Veronique@AthenaTheatre.com:

-Cover Letter detailing your interest
-Full-length play, which highlights your style of writing
-Resume

Seeking submissions for the Spring 2017 season

web site

The Bechdel group accept new plays and screenplays, scripts in development, partial scripts, drafts - anything in progress. Our readings are designed to provide an opportunity to further script development, so we're excited about work that is not yet 'complete'. We typically feature 20 - 35 pages (roughly a half hour) of a script.

Our aim is provide an informal, festive, safe space to hear your work and get feedback from actors, directors, dramaturgs, and theater lovers.

You may submit your script at anytime, but we read and respond in two windows:
For our Fall Workshop Series: we read scripts between March 1 and June 15, and aim to respond to all submissions by the first week of July.

For our Winter/Spring Workshop Series: we read scripts between August 1 and November 15, and aim to respond to all submissions by the first week of December.

We are happy to accept submissions that are being shopped elsewhere, but we ask that you contact us if your script is selected for another workshop, a staged reading, or production.

Due to the high volume of submissions, we regret that we cannot give each submission individual feedback.

Your submission MUST:
  • Be in progress. Our aim is to provide a space that will help you develop your work. If your script or screenplay is 'finished', has had full productions, or is about to be produced, we are not the right organization for you. We are happy to consider work that has had prior workshops or informal/staged readings, if you still consider your script in development.
  • Pass the Bechdel Test. You must have two female characters, with names, who have a full scene/conversation that is not about their romantic relationships.
  • We are constantly discussing the Bechdel Test and the way it serves (or fails to serve) our mission. We know that as a 'test', there are flaws and gaps. We are indeed interested in scripts that push boundaries and raise discussion points - however, this is our baseline. Please do not send us two-handers with one male and one female character or scripts with only one female character.
  • Support our mission of fostering strong, complex, dynamic roles for women.
What we want:
Complex, layered female characters.
Thoughtful consideration of your needs in terms of script development - we look at the questions you're asking about your work carefully.

What we do not want:
Scripts that just manage to pass the Bechdel Test. If your main female character goes 60 pages without interacting with anyone but men, chances are good we will not be interested. If your qualifying scene does not forward your plot, chances are good we will not be interested.

Have you read all this? Are you feeling confident about The Bechdel Group as a good fit for you?
Well, then, click here to submit.

Submission Guidelines
  • The play should be approximately ten-minutes in length.
  • The play must have no more than five on-stage (speaking and non-speaking) characters.
  • You may submit only one play, so send us your best! Please do not make more than one submission.

  • The play must be unpublished and unproduced at the time of submission to our contest. We do screen for this, so don’t send us your play if it has been produced. (Staged readings are not counted as “produced.”)
  • Submitting your play to our contest grants Lakeshore Players the right to produce your play in our annual festival and photograph and/or videotape it for archival purposes, if it is chosen as a finalist.

Additional Guidelines
  • The play should have simple technical requirements. There won’t be a set — a few furniture pieces and a few props only — we only have about one minute in between plays to change scenes.
  • As a community theatre, we want to appeal to the largest possible audience, therefore plays with excessive offensive language are less likely to be selected – please keep that in consideration.

Association for Theatre in Higher Education ATHE Award for Excellence in Playwriting

web site

The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) is pleased to announce the ATHE Award for Excellence in Playwriting. The award honors a new play marked by sophisticated and nuanced storytelling, with the potential to make a major artistic impact on contemporary theatre.

Plays must have been written during the two years preceding the upcoming national conference (August 2017) by playwrights engaged with an institution of higher education (be it student, faculty, artist in residence, guest artist, etc.) during that time period.

Only full-length plays, in Samuel French Playwriting Format, may be nominated for this award. Self-nominations and nominations from ATHE members are permitted. Only one play may be submitted per playwright in any given year. The plays can be produced or unproduced, but must be unpublished.

Qualifying plays should be submitted through the ATHE website. No submission fees are required. The winning playwright is expected to attend the ATHE Conference and participate in a development workshop and staged reading of the play. The conference takes place - The playwright will receive conference registration, four nights in the conference hotel, $500 towards travel expenses (reimbursement), and a one-year membership in the Dramatists Guild. Additionally, the winner will receive a plaque at the annual ATHE Awards Celebration and attend a reception.

Submission Guidelines
  • Electronic submissions are required. Word, PDF, and Rich Text formats preferred.
  • Samuel French script formatting required.
  • Although we do permit the submission of musicals, the limitations of staff and resources will make it difficult for us to produce such material.
  • We do not accept screenplays.
  • Your play must not include material that you do not have permission to use.
  • Your play must not be previously published.
  • Previous production of your script is allowed
  • Do not submit a play that is incomplete, unfinished, or a rough draft. Send us the entire completed play.
  • The ATHE Award for Excellence in Playwriting committee has no problem with you submitting your play to other competitions simultaneously.

Jewish Women's Theatre seeks scripts

web site

Okay, you’re Jewish, that’s a good start, but how “Jewish” do you have to write? When submitting material, consider the following parameters for your submission:
  • Please check the themes of the season and submit accordingly. We will not accept late submissions this year. Thank you!
  • An element of Jewish resonance is important, but your submission does not need to feature being Jewish as the prominent theme or subject.
  • Feature women or a woman’s point of view, but not exclusively. Male characters are welcome.
  • Short one-acts (10 minutes max) and monologues (7 minutes max) are preferred. Will read full-length, but unlikely will produce.
  • 1500 words or less preferred
  • Must be topical for the 21st century. While we consider plays set in another time period, we mostly select contemporary pieces.
  • Small cast a must. One-person shows okay.
  • Previously produced or published work is welcome. Please include production and/or publication history. A new version of a classic or an adaptation from another medium would definitely be of interest.
Although the primary focus of the JWT is on the writing, music is often a part of our events. We encourage composers, song-writers, and performers to submit individual work. Musicals are welcome.

Submit your material to info@jewishwomenstheatre.org.
