Call for Mellerdrammer Scripts

Theatre Suburbia, Northwest Houston's longest running all volunteer playhouse, is looking to produce a new Summer Mellerdramer in 2016.
Our theatre has produced crowd pleasing mellerdrammers each summer for many years. We have worked with published scripts like Little Nell the Orphan Girl by Nelson Goodhue, Deadwood Dick by Tom Taggert, Rascality on the Rig by William S Davis, and Curse of an Aching Heart by Herbert E Swayne as well as unpublished works by Eddie Cope, Paul Hager, Dave Brandl and other local writers.
Theatre Suburbia invites the playwriting community to submit new unpublished scripts for consideration. Deadline for submissions is March 1, 2016.

GUIDELINES
To qualify for consideration, the scripts must conform to the following guidelines:
• The script must have a running time between 90 and 120 minutes.
• The script should have 2 acts with one intermission.
• The main characters (villain, hero and heroine) should make their stage entrances within the first 10 pages of the script.
• The script should contain from 8 to 12 characters. Characters must be a minimum of 10 years old. Remember: children can be difficult to cast and this may affect final selection.
• The scripts should contain asides (in mellerdrammer fashion) for the characters. The villain should the most, followed by the hero and heroine, and remaining cast should have a few. The asides help generate the audience responses for the main characters - boos and hisses for the villain, oohs and ahs for the heroine, and of course cheers for the hero.
• This is to be a family type show so absolutely no vulgar, offensive or suggestive language is allowed.
• Set requirements should be simple with a minimum number of locations (house, yard, street scene, etc) because the show is to be performed in the round and the popcorn must be easily cleaned after each performance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• Any agreed to production can be subject to Royalty, and will be subject to written contractual agreement between Playwright and Theatre Suburbia.
• Author may, at the theatres discretion, have limited input into the producing of the script. The director and Theatre Suburbia have final authority on the production i.e. casting, set etc.

Anderson Center Residency Program

The Anderson Center offers residencies of two weeks or one month from May-October to artists, writers, and scholars. Through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Anderson Center will devote the entire month of June, 2016, to five Deaf American artists whose native or adoptive language is American Sign Language. Through a grant from the Jerome Foundation of St. Paul, the Center will also devote the month of August, 2016 to encourage the work of emerging artists from New York City and Minnesota.) The Anderson Center is located 45 minutes southeast of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Transportation is provided between the Center and the Twin Cities airport on the first and last day of residencies only.

Each resident is provided room, board, and workspace for the length of the residency period. Each resident is asked to serve the community of Red Wing or its surrounding area by giving a talk, lecture, reading, performance, or classroom activity as specified by the Executive Director.

Visual artists are provided a 15' x 26' studio. Other workspaces on site include a natural down-draft kiln, a printmaking studio, and an open-air metalsmith facility. Practice space is also available for dancers and choreographers.


RESIDENCY PERIODS
Anderson Center residencies begin on the 1st or 16th of each month and end on the 15th or last day of each month for periods of 2-4 weeks. Your residency period must be selected within these guidelines. Please plan your requested residency dates carefully. Preference is given to those applying for month-long stays. If you have been a prior resident to the Anderson Center, you must wait three years from the time of your residency to apply again.

APPLICATIONS
Each completed application must include: a completed application form, resume, work plan, work sample, and a self-addressed stamped #10 envelope for notification. We are sorry, but due to our limited staff we are unable to return work samples. Provide five stapled packets of all printed application materials. Please collate your application material into 5 complete packets. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed by the panel. Work samples should be of recent work and should include:

1. scholars: five copies of 1 published article
2. composers: 1 CD of recorded music
3. visual artists: 1 CD with at least 5 images of work
4. nonfiction and fiction writers: five copies of 10 pages of prose
5. poets: five copies of 10 pages of poetry
6. performance artists: 1 CD or DVD of performance


DEADLINES
For residencies during the months May and July, apply by February 1. For June, apply by February 15. For residencies during the months of August-October, apply by March 1. Completed applications must arrive on or before these deadlines in order to be considered in the judging period.

SELECTION
Decisions are made by a panel of professional peers and are announced 30 - 45 days after the application deadline.

Indie Boots Theatre Festival

Indie Boots is currently accepting short play submissions for the fourth annual festival featuring independent theatre with different perspectives on whose stories are worth telling, what's funny, and how the world works. All plays must use the word "Ava" in the title of the piece. Plays under 10 minutes, comedies, and plays featuring underrepresented characters (women, LGBTQ characters, etc) are especially encouraged. The finalists will be performed this spring in Chicago, IL as part of Indie Boots Theatre Festival 2016: The Ava Plays. An audience award will be presented. Jane Chambers Playwriting Award

This award is administered by the Women in Theatre Program. The Jane Chambers Playwriting Award recognizes plays and performance texts created by women that present a feminist perspective and contain significant opportunities for female performers. This annual award is given in memory of lesbian playwright Jane Chambers who, through her plays A Late Snow, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, My Blue Heaven, Kudzu, and The Quintessential Image, became a major feminist voice in American theatre. 2016 Headwaters Festival

Headwaters New Play Festival - Submission Guidelines

To be considered for the Headwaters New Play Festival, a play must never have had a professional production and the playwright must be available to attend the workshop week (August 23-27, 2016). 

One of our goals this year is to more accurately reflect the diversity of human experience by including a play by a female playwright. 

The Headwaters program is the source of new plays of the West: plays set in the current, historic, or mystic western United States; plays by playwrights originally from or living in the West; plays that deal with themes connected to the real or mythic West; and plays that re-imagine what “West” means.

The deadline for submissions for the 2016 Headwaters New Play Festival is February 28th, 2016

Responses will be sent out by March 15th, 2016. CRT will provide travel, housing, and a food stipend for the selected playwrights. Plays read at the festival will be considered for full production in CRT’s 2017 season.

Cupcake Lady Productions seeks bad plays

Cupcake Lady Productions will select five (5) plays as finalists to be performed (badly) in Another Taste of Rotten Theatre on April 1, 2016. The finalists will be announced on March 7th 2016.

Three judges will rate each play on a scale of 1-10. The audience will also vote on the same scale, counting as a fourth judge. The votes will be tallied and the Best of the Worst, based on the highest total score from the judges, will receive our GRAND PRIZE!

• The author of the play must be the same person submitting it
• You must own the rights to perform the play you are submitting
• Plays must be 10-minutes or less in length
• One (1) entry per person only, please!
• Entries may be short, self-contained plays, or a 10-minute scene from a longer play (out of context scenes are strongly encouraged)
• Former contest winners are eligible to enter, but the entry must be a different play
• No plays submitted by judges, volunteers or performers participating in Another Night of Rotten Theatre 2016 will be considered.

Theatre503’s Playwriting Award

Theatre503’s Playwriting Award is an unprecedented opportunity for playwrights at all levels to be recognised for writing an outstanding, original piece of work for the stage. It will build upon the foundation of the venue’s reputation for engaging with the next generation of playwrights, whilst broadening its opportunities to include more experienced, produced writers.

This biennial award has been made possible by the generous support of The Richard Carne Trust, Curtis Brown Creative, Arts Council England and our publishing partners Nick Hern Books.

The winner of the award will receive a £6000 prize, a guaranteed production of their play at Theatre503, and their script published by Nick Hern Books.

To be considered for the 503Five you should have no full-length professional production credits.This is defined as a run of 3 weeks or more in an established venue for which you have received coverage from the national press.


  • You can submit to the award from 1 to 29 February 2016.
  • The play must not have been professional produced. We define professionally produced as a run of 5 performances or longer to a paying audience.
  • Plays must be submitted in the English language.
  • Plays must not currently be under professional option or attached to another theatre/company.
  • Plays must not have been professionally published.
  • All scripts will be read anonymously – you will be asked for your personal details when submitting but these are kept separate from your script while being read.
  • There should be no personal details contained within the script, including cover pages, headers and footers and body of the text.
  • Writers may only submit one script per submission window however this can include scripts that have been previously considered by Theatre503 or other theatres.
  • Once submitted you may not submit a later draft before the submission window closes.
  • The play must be at least 60 minutes in stage time.
  • There is no entry fee for this competition.
  • Co-written plays are accepted for the award. If the writers in question are then considered for the 503Five they will be asked to submit individual work.

Submission Process

By submitting a script for consideration you agree that:
  • The text itself does not contain any detail of your identity.
  • You are the writer of the play and exclusively own and control all copyright and all other related rights to the play.
  • The play is at least 60 minutes in stage time.
  • The play is an original, unperformed, unpublished work for the stage and has not been produced anywhere in the world.
  • The play is available for production and unattached to any other theatre or company.
  • If you are the winner, or are selected to join the 503Five, your play will be automatically under option to Theatre503 for a period of eighteen months after the announcement of the award winner or the 503Five members, whichever is applicable.
  • If you are the winner of the award then Nick Hern Books will have the first refusal over acquiring publication and amateur performing rights, pending further contractual agreement and payment of an advance against royalties.
  • You will not be entitled to any production related fees other than Theatre503’s standard percentage of gross box office receipts.
  • Upon the occurrence of any event of force majeure or incapacity, Theatre503 shall not be obliged to produce any work.
  • The information that you provide can be used for analysis purposes

Final judging panel for the 2016 Theatre503 Playwriting award will include: Timberlake Wertenbaker (Our Country’s Good), Mel Kenyon (Casarotto And Ramsey) Henry Hitchings(Evening Standard), and Lily Williams (Curtis Brown).

Helen McCloy Scholarship

What Is It? The Helen McCloy/MWA Scholarship for Mystery Writing seeks to nurture talent in mystery writing—in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting.

Who May Apply? The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents only. Membership in Mystery Writers of America is not required to apply. The McCloy Scholarship is intended for serious aspiring mystery writers who wish to improve their writing skills.

How Shall the Scholarship Be Used? The scholarship shall be used to offset tuition and fees for writing workshops, writing seminars, or university/college-level writing programs taking place in the U.S. in summer, fall or winter of 2016 or early spring 2017. Applicants must select a specific writing class/workshop/seminar to which scholarship funds would be applied.

What Is the Scholarship Amount? MWA will present two scholarships for up to $500 each. Scholarship checks are issued in late Spring and are made out jointly to scholarship winners and their chosen educational institutions.

Submission Details Applicants are required to submit:

* ONE Scholarship application form, completed – 2016 McCloy Application Form

* ONE copy of the official description of the writing class/workshop/program (from college catalog, workshop brochure, or other.)

* FIVE COPIES of a 300- to 500-word essay explaining the applicant’s interest in mystery writing

* FIVE COPIES of a sample of mystery writing for judging: either a synopsis and 3 chapters from a novel, or 3 short stories, or 3 short nonfiction pieces, or 1 screenplay or 1 play script

The scholarship committee may also require a letter of acceptance and/or syllabus or other documentation from the writing class/workshop/seminar to be attended.

The Dr. Floyd Gaffney Playwriting Competition

The Dr. Floyd Gaffney Playwriting Competition is part of the Wagner New Play Festival at UC San Diego, sponsored by the Division of Arts and Humanities. The Gaffney Prize, now in its tenth year, awards $1000 to a winning undergraduate author along with travel and lodging to participate in the play’s staged reading as part of the Wagner New Play Festival.

The University of California San Diego's Theatre and Dance Department seeks from all enrolled undergraduate students submissions of scripts highlighting African American experience in contemporary or historical terms. Adaptations from books and other forms not allowed.

Scripts must be original, unpublished, unproduced and free of royalty and copyright restrictions. Plays which have had staged readings are acceptable.

Scripts must be 50 pages or longer, typed. Manuscripts must be submitted electronically. You must also include your contact information (name, college email, and address); play title, number of characters, institution affiliation and a one page story summary.

Black And Latino Playwrights Conference

A workshop and showcase featuring the work of student and professional Black and Latino playwrights, conducted by professional guest directors and artists.

The mission of Texas State University's Black and Latino Playwrights Conference is to study the craft, to future the artist, and celebrate the work.
Program

The Department of Theatre and Dance annually sponsors a Black and Latino Playwrights Conference that includes professional guest director and actors, auditions, 3-5 days of open rehearsals and in-class presentations by guest artists culminating in staged reading performances open to the campus and community.
Objectives
  • Provide Texas State University students majoring in theatre with the opportunity to work with professionals for a hands-on, week-long lab that includes the collaborative process of "finding a play" in rehearsals, culminating with a public staged reading.
  • Showcase the work of Black and Latino playwrights from across the country.
  • Annually lend an ear to new voices and help writers, in collaboration with directors, actors and dramaturges, to shape their stories and hone their craft in an environment that allows the writer to explore and grow and learn fearlessly.
  • Share the play with the campus and community in a staged reading for audiences followed by a discussion and/or question and answer session.

PlayFest 2016 Submission Guidelines

What We Seek

PlayFest (Fall, 2016) is seeking new full-length plays that speak to the human condition in our fascinating and complicated contemporary world. We are interested in plays exploring important, challenging, and crucial social issues that affect our lives today. Topics can range from today’s international headlines to tonight's interpersonal situations in the bedroom. Both comedies and dramas are welcome.

The PlayFest weekend of staged readings is a direct pipeline to our Signature Series, our fully produced mainstage series. We prefer plays that require six or fewer actors but will certainly make exceptions for exceptional work. One-man or one-woman shows are welcome. We seek strong, dynamic, compelling stories told with an original voice and a potent theatricality.

We will select six new works to be presented as readings. Playwrights will receive a stipend, travel, and housing expenses. We will provide directors, actors, stage direction readers, and stage managers. In addition to possible consideration for our Signature Series, some plays may be selected to be fully produced at the University of Central Florida as part of our partnership with UCF.

For Your Play to Qualify

For your script to be read at PlayFest 2016, it must:

1. NOT have received more than two prior professional AEA productions
2. NOT have received a Broadway or Off-Broadway production
3. NOT have received an Orlando production in current form
4. NOT be published for general distribution with the rights held by the Publisher

Kevin Spacey Foundation: (KSF) Artists of Choice Award


The Kevin Spacey Foundation: (KSF) Artists of Choice Awards have launched and we are looking to fund emerging theatre artists. We want to hear from anyone forging a career for themselves with an exciting, creative and unique project.

Applications are open to artists resident in the UK, USA; and for the first time this year, Canada made possible by a partnership with KSF and Manjy and David Sidoo and the support of The Sidoo Family Giving Foundation.

KSF Artists of Choice Awards will be made to four UK-based, four US-based and four Canada-based artists or companies, each will receive up to £10,000 or $10,000 in funding, year-round in-kind support from KSF and an industry mentor.

A panel of respected creatives will help to select the recipients. Last year's panel included actor Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife), theatre director Jamie Lloyd, Atlantic Theater's Artistic Director Neil Pepe, and playwright Marcus Gardley.

East Valley Children’s Theatre is searching for aspiring playwrights to become a part of the theatre’s future seasons of performances. Contest rules and prizes are listed below.

* All Plays must be submitted to EVCT no later than March 1, 2016

. (Must include a cover sheet with name, address, phone number, email address.)

* Plays must be suitable for children to perform for children.
(Small casts are not as likely to be chosen for performance, casts of 15 or more are preferred.)

* Plays must be one hour to one hour and a half in length. (Shorter plays may be submitted but they will not be considered for production by the theatre as one of its season’s productions.)

* Plays and Musicals must not have been previously performed. They must be original and unpublished.

* Musicals must include a copy of the music in some form, either
manuscript or recorded.

* No entry fee is required.

Competition Rules

Only complete scripts will be considered; no excerpts from longer works.
Scripts must be original, unpublished, and not previously produced.
Each playwright may submit only one script per category. It is possible for a playwright to win in both categories.
Competition is open to adult playwrights around the English-speaking world. No juvenile writers.
Target audience: adults, including young adults.
Genre: comedy, drama, tragedy, farce, hybrid; theatrical storytelling. No monologues, children’s plays, adaptations, or musicals.
Cast may contain any number of characters of any race, ethnicity, or gender.
Theme and subject matter are open; however, excessively strong language is discouraged.
Winners will grant Festival 56 and Princeton Theatre Group first production rights. Playwrights retain copyright.
At least two One-Act and up to six Ten-Minute scripts will be selected for staged readings. Total number of winners will depend upon the number and range of submissions.
The decision of the judges is final. Judges will not provide any written or verbal critiques.


• Winning playwrights are strongly encouraged to attend their readings, although attendance is not a requirement for winning. If the playwright is present, a talkback with the audience and actors will immediately follow the reading of each script.

Well developed storyline within a short work
Natural and creative dialogue
Quality of writing and dramatic structure
Ability of script to connect with an audience

Submission Guidelines

Type script with 1-inch margins on all four edges, using a 12-point serif type such as Times New Roman, Palatino, or Courier.

Use standard script format including cast of characters, setting, etc.
Do NOT put your real name on your script! On the first page of the script, under the title, put a pen name of your choice.
Use the script title as the name of this document.

Create a separate document giving your real name, address, email, phone, the title of your script, and either your real age or the statement “I am over 18.”
Use your pen name as the name of this document.
This document will not be opened until after winners have been selected.

Attach both the script document and the identifying document to an email as a Word doc, Pages doc, or PDF.

Pop Up Theater is an annual performance of original ten-minute plays. Plays range from fully staged scenes to book-in-hand readings. The intent is for artists to get a work on its feet, in front of an audience, and see where it goes. The theme of each Pop Up Theater allows artists to find inspiration for a new story, focus an idea that has been stewing for a while, or dust off an old scene for a new life. The plays can be monologues, poems, skits, excerpts from larger plays, musical pieces, movement or dance, even performance art – as long as they fit the theme. You provide the work, and we’ll help you with directors and actors. The performance will be staged for a live audience and will be live streamed on-line.

Rules for the Play Competition for Youth Theatre

1. The Marilyn Hall Awards consist of two (2) monetary prizes for plays suitable for grades 6-8 (middle school) or for plays suitable for grades 9-12 (high school). The two prizes will be awarded on the merits of the play scripts, which includes its suitability for the intended audience. The plays should be approximately 45 to 75 minutes in length. There is no production connected to any of the prizes, though a staged reading is optional at the discretion of the BHTG.

2. Authors must be U.S. Citizens or legal residents. Co-Authorships are permissible.

3. The plays must be written in Standard American English. Slang, jargon, and regional dialects, etc., may be used only to establish necessary characterization.

4. Authors may enter up to two (2) scripts in the Play Competition for Youth Theatre.

5. Entries must be unpublished, theatrical works written for the living stage and suitable for the grades designated. Play scripts may have had one (1) non-professional or educational theatre production. But the play may not have been produced on a professional level for which authors, actors or staff were paid.

6. Entries may be original plays, adaptations and/or translations. Authors of adaptations and/or translations of works that are under current copyright must provide (upon request) proof of permission from the copyright holder(s) or their legal agents to use such works.

7. Plays shorter than approximately 45 minutes are not eligible; musicals are not eligible; and plays entered in previous BHTG Competitions are not eligible. (Please note: plays with music, i.e. plays with an occasional interpolated song, are eligible: works that are designated as musicals are not.)

8. Submissions received with postmarks BEFORE January 15th or AFTER the last day of February of the contest year will not be accepted, read or returned. Authors will be notified of ineligible submission and the reasons why.
9. Submissions in noncompliance of these Rules and the Submission Procedures will be ineligible.

10. BHTG has the right to accept or reject any entry without explanation, and will not correspond with, or discuss with, any person the results of the competition, or the acceptance or rejection of any entry.

11. The competition judges' decisions are final in all respects.

12. BHTG has the following rights which it may exercise at its sole discretion:

a. To declare any entry ineligible if prior to Competition's close (June 1) the entry is in violation of rule #6. Authors must notify the BHTG of any change in status.
b. To reproduce as many copies of an entry as are necessary for distribution among the judges.
c. To use the author's name and title of any entry receiving an award for publicity about this Playwright Award and the results of the competition.
d. To present one script-in-hand, rehearsed readings of an award winning entry to an invited, nonpaying audience. No royalty payment will be due to the entry's author for these readings.

13. Each award winner will, at all times, in connection with publications, production, publicity, advertisements, etc. about the award winning entry, designate that the play is an "Award Winner of The Beverly Hills Theatre Guild/Youth Theatre Competition."

14. Each entry will be free from copyright restrictions relating to this Award, and the author will hold the BHTG, its officers, and directors free and harmless from all copyright claims and violations.

15. The BHTG is not a producing organization. No production is connected with the competition nor any prize awarded.

16. Sorry, the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild - Youth Theatre Competition does not sponsor scholarships, fellowships, educational grants, or loans to students or private individuals. Nor does the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild as an organization.


Submission Procedures

1. Each entry must be accompanied by an individual, completed application/entry form. Application forms may be duplicated as necessary. Application forms and Competition rules and Submission Procedures may be obtained by sending #10 business-sized SASE to the address below.

2. Each author must personally sign the application. Entries must be legible and signature clearly the name of the writer(s). The author(s) must sign the entry form. Proxy or agent signatures are not accepted and will lead to disqualification.

3. Bind your entry securely and include a title page with the name of the play, whether it is an "original" or an adaptation/translation from another work, and, if desired, copyright or registration information and date (instead of the author's name, please use "by the author.") On the second page list all characters, time, place, number of acts and scenes, and any other pertinent information such as whether the scripts make use of special effects, e.g., puppetry. Scripts must be bound. A clip holding pages together unfortunately doesn't constitute being "bound". (This is insisted upon for the protection of the script and benefit of the writer. Loose scripts may have pages become misplaced or lost. The competition is not responsible for loss or damage to entries or parts thereof.)

4. Do not show your name, address or any identifying information on any page of your entry. Attach with a removable paper clip, a sheet containing the title of your entry, your name, address, phone number and any other information.

5. To preserve anonymity, all entries will be identified by numbers for judging. All identifying marks will be removed.

6. Submissions will not be returned. This includes either eligible or ineligible submissions. Enclose with your submission a #10 business-sized SASE for our response.

7. You may enclose a self-addressed stamped postcard for acknowledgment of receipt of your entry. Competition winners to be announced on this web site in June.

8. The BHTG is not responsible for loss or damage to entries.

9. No script will be accepted by fax or e-mail. No electronic submissions or correspondence.

10. No entry is returned.

FVCC Theatre Announces Call for Submissions for Original 10-Minute Play Festival

Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC) Theatre is accepting entries for its fourth biennial 10-Minute Play Festival. Selected plays will be performed in the college’s Black Box Theatre May 5-7, 2015.

Entries must be original, unpublished plays lasting 10 minutes or less in length. Previously performed plays will be accepted; however, adaptations of original works will not be accepted.

Submissions should be “blind” and include an email address, phone number and cover sheet excluding the playwright’s name. Each playwright is allowed to submit up to three entries for consideration. There are no submission or reading fees associated with the festival.

Successful entries are complete works featuring fully-developed plots and characters. They are easily adapted into a variety of theatre spaces and do not rely on major scenic elements to tell the stories. Entries will be screened and selected by a committee comprised of FVCC faculty.

The deadline for entries is February 15, 2016. Each play selected to be performed at the festival will receive a $100 cash prize.

Taboo Theatre seeks adult fairy tales

Taboo is looking for submissions again! We have wanted to do this for a while and we are very excited that now is the time. This year, instead of Grand Guignol plays, we are looking for original adult fairy tales, exploring diverse taboos. Our showcase will have the theme “The Uncanny: When the Fantasy is Too Real.”

Here are the requirements:
–Submissions must be accompanied by a 150-250 word description of which taboo your work is exploring and how.
–The plays can be either completely original, adaptations of classical works or other material that fits the requirements of this genre.
–The plays must be 10-25 minutes long.
–The plays should not require elaborate sets, props or costumes.
–Submissions may consist of one or more plays.
–Completed drafts are preferred but not absolutely necessary.
–Please include with your submission any past writing and theatre credits.
–Submissions will be accepted no later than February 15, 2016.
–Chosen submissions will be announced by March 1, 2016.

The accepted plays will be workshopped during early spring (the exact dates will be determined by the number of shows accepted). The selected works will then be rehearsed and mounted over the following months, with exact details and dates to be announced at a later time.

Headwaters New Play Festival

To be considered for the Headwaters New Play Festival (Colorado), a play must never have had a professional production and the playwright must be available to attend the workshop week (August 23-27, 2016). One of our goals this year is to more accurately reflect the diversity of human experience by including a play by a female playwright. The Headwaters program is the source of new plays of the West: plays set in the current, historic, or mystic western United States; plays by playwrights originally from or living in the West; plays that deal with themes connected to the real or mythic West; and plays that re-imagine what “West” means.

The deadline for submissions for the 2016 Headwaters New Play Festival is February 28th, 2016. Responses will be sent out by March 15th, 2016. CRT will provide travel, housing, and a food stipend for the selected playwrights. Plays read at the festival will be considered for full production in CRT’s 2017 season. Script Submissions to Yale Rep

Yale Repertory Theatre accepts submissions of full-length plays, musicals, translations, and adaptations. All submissions are considered for productions at Yale Rep and for development opportunities with the Binger Center for New Theatre.

Playwrights must submit their work either through established agents or by first sending a letter of inquiry, accompanied by a brief synopsis, cast breakdown, a ten-page dialogue sample, and a résumé. The Literary Office will review these materials and contact playwrights regarding Yale Rep's interest in reading a full manuscript. Yale Rep will not read unsolicited manuscripts.

Submissions are accepted year-round. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if materials are to be returned. Unsolicited manuscripts will not be reviewed.

Playwriting Competition for High School and College Students

Against the Grain Theater Festival is seeking submissions for its 2016 high school and college playwriting competition. The winning playwrights will receive a workshop in Buffalo, New York, where they will get to work on their plays with local actors, directors, and designers. The workshop will culminate with a public reading.

Guidelines:

1. Submissions will be accepted from high school and college students from around the world. Graduate students are eligible for the college competition. If you are not in school, but would like to submit a play, you may submit to the high school competition if you are between the ages of 13 and 18, and to the college competition if you are between the ages of 19 and 23. If you are not attending school, please provide proof of age.

2. Submissions must be original, unpublished, unproduced plays, in English, of at least 20 pages. Plays that have received a workshop, reading, or non-professional production may be submitted.

3. Submissions will be accepted until February 15, 2016. A bracket format for the eight regions in the map below will be used to determine the overall winner. The semi-finalists in both the high school and the college competition will receive detailed feedback from Against the Grain Theater Festival and will be recognized on our website after the competition. Winners will be announced on May 1, 2016. Workshop dates are yet to be determined.

4. Please include only the play’s title on the first page of the script. Do not include any other identifying information in the script.

Barter's Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights (AFPP)

This annual festival celebrates the richness of the Appalachian tradition by showcasing the stories of the region, both past and present, and the inspiration it provides the writers who live here.

Since 1933, Barter Theatre has been developing new works and nurturing area talent. The AFPP has gained national attention by developing a process that has resulted in new plays being produced not only on one of Barter’s two stages, but in regional theatres across the country.

Keep on the Sunny Side, by Douglas Pote, first read at the AFPP in 2001, went on to a full production on both of Barter’s two stages before touring to 23 states in 2004-05. Enjoyed by more than 100,000 people, this poignant love story about A.P. and Sara Carter has been produced by theatres throughout the country. Black Pearl Sings by Frank Higgins, was first read and developed in 2006 at the AFPP and, in 2010, was listed as one of the most produced plays of that year by TCG.

Project Outline

Barter’s Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights is actively planned and organized throughout the year.

Here's what happens: A brief rehearsal process (six hours/play) takes place in June with an emphasis placed on clarity, not effect—getting the playwrights words and story out to the audience. The plays are read by members of Barter’s Resident Acting Company.

Following each public reading there are audience and artist discussions about the play, led by Richard Rose, Producing Artistic Director, and a panel made up of local and regional theatre professionals. The reading and discussion is an invaluable tool to a playwright seeking to discover what’s working in the play and what needs work. Over the years, the AFPP has developed an audience who love to be a part of the process of helping playwrights develop their work. This process works because the playwright has a chance to hear from the very people who will eventually be buying tickets to their play!

Play Submission Guidelines:
  • Plays must be written by an Appalachian playwright (currently living in the Appalachian Mountains which, for our purposes, run from New York to Alabama) OR the plays must be set in the Appalachian region.
  • Plays must be unpublished and must not have had a full professional production .
  • Full length plays are preferred.

Four Quarter Theater, a NYC based theater ensemble, is currently accepting 10 minute plays

In each quarter of the year, and aligning with the seasons, Four Quarter Theater aims to produce a new set of ten-minute plays. Each season is framed around a theme, which relates to the season in which the quarter falls. Each theme is open to artistic interpretation and is provided as a thematic framework to guide the playwright. The format of the performances will be staged readings in New York City.

Four Quarter Theater is currently accepting 10 minute plays for the remaining seasons of 2016:
  • Spring: Renewal
  • Summer: Burned
  • Fall: Abundance
Below please find our submission requirements and additional guidance to successfully submit your piece to Four Quarter Theater. Please note that playwrights are eligible to submit one piece per season only. We are currently accepting submissions for each season until February 25, 2016.

Submission Requirements

§ The play must be presentable in ten minutes (generally between 7 to 12 pages of dialogue).

§ There is a submission limit of one play per theme. The playwright must designate the theme submitted for in the subject line of the email (Renewal, Burned, or Abundance).

§ Please do not submit first drafts. Due to the number of submissions, Four Quarter Theater can only read any play one time.

§ Original and never before produced plays are highly encouraged and considered.

Cover Letter in Body of Email

§ Title, author’s name, address, phone number, email address.

§ A brief description of the play—this need not be a summary, but may include description of the play’s world, the characters, the conflict, reason for writing, connection to theme, etc.

Script in PDF Format

§ Title page should include at least the title, cast of characters, time and place.

§ Script should be approximately 7 to 12 pages not including title page and include completed dialogue as plays cannot be edited after submission.

Selection of Plays

The play selection process is conducted by the Play Selection Committee. As many as seven plays are selected for each series (approximately 4 times a year). Only selected playwrights will be contacted. Plays not chosen for this quarter/year may be considered for future series if considered by the company to be theme appropriate.

Four Quarter Theater reserves the sole right to make all production decisions with regard to the plays selected. Four Quarter Theater reserves the right to photograph and video record selected plays to be utilized for promotional materials; promotional video recordings will only include clips of performances and never the full performance of the selected play.

Four Quarter Theater is committed to highlighting work of emerging artists. There is no financial compensation for entries, nor is any financial commitment required by the playwright.

Woodward/Newman Drama Award 2016

The BPP is accepting submissions for the 2015-16 Woodward/Newman Drama Award. Submissions are due by March 1, 2016. The top 10 finalists will be announced at the end of May with the winner announced in June 2016.
  • "Full-length" plays will have a complete running time of between 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) to 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes).
  • Plays submitted must be unpublished at the time of submission. Plays that have received developmental readings, workshop productions, or productions at small theatre companies are acceptable. No scripts with previous productions at major regional theaters will be accepted. Once entered, subsequent activity does not change the acceptability of the script.
  • Each submission must include a synopsis (1 page or less) including the cast size. A separate page should include a brief bio of the playwright, and production/development history if applicable.
  • Each submission must include a cover letter with contact information and a $10.00 reader fee. Agent submissions require no fee. The fee will be waived for Dramatist Guild members with an enclosed photocopy of a membership card. The BPP only accepts U.S. checks or money orders (Make check payable to "BPP"). No international checks or money orders will be accepted. If submitting internationally or if you want to avoid paying by check, pay online with your credit card here
  • Make sure to note with your submission that you have paid the reader fee online.
  • It is preferable for musicals to include a demo CD. The complete score is not necessary but may be included. All plays are read by BPP's literary personnel led by and including the Literary Manager and Artistic Director.
  • We do not accept email submissions. Scripts will not be returned. Blind submissions are not necessary. Please include all contact information. Plays submitted in previous years will be accepted.
  • The BPP reserves the right not to name a winner and/or name a winner but not commit to a reading or production.

Scrap Mettle seeks new work

Our first event will focus on theatre. NIGHT ONE: Successful applicants will have a selection of their piece presented during a night of readings. The pieces will be voted on by genre and votes will be tallied while a guest band plays an awesome set! NIGHT TWO: Pieces that move on will have a larger selection of the piece read in a similar format to the first event, and, NIGHT THREE: Those who make it to the third round will earn a staged reading of either the first act or the entirety of their piece produced by Scrap Mettle!

We only have two rules:

1. None of your work can have received any major grant or residency, and it cannot have been produced or shown at a major venue.

2. The work you submit must be a passion project and work that you have already been developing. Any new work written for this event will not be eligible and a complete draft* must exist. This is an honor system...except that you might be asked for a complete draft at any time.

(* We understand what it means for a piece to be in development and that your excerpt may be coming from a new draft that has not yet been completed. That is okay! As you progress through the program and work with our actors and directors, we hope more development will take place as well. Re-writes throughout the process are not only permissible but they are encouraged! We just ask that there has been a complete draft at some point in the piece's lifetime and that the draft be a minimum of 45 pages.)

1. There is no cost to apply or to participate in Scrap Mettle's program.
2. Scrap Mettle Arts will provide actors for the readings. More resources are made available to the playwrights as they progress through the rounds, including rehearsal time and directors.
3. Playwrights will present longer excerpts as they progress through the rounds.

Short plays require an ability to convey character, effective dialogue, and action without extensive exposition, and in this 10-week class, you'll learn how not to waste a single word. From this class, you'll take away the skills to craft surprising pieces of theater, regardless of length, that reflect something deeper about the world at large, and you'll be well on your way to compiling a portfolio of submission-ready short plays.

The World Sinophone Drama Competition for Young Playwrights project seeks to encourage production of new dramatic works that reflect upon global Chinese culture from a variety of perspectives and enrich our understanding of Sinophone cultures, circulations, histories, and communities. To this end, we invite young playwrights (aged 18-35) to submit new scripts composed in either English or Chinese for the inaugural round of this international drama competition. For English-language submissions, we welcome works of self-reflection from members of Sinophone communities, as well as those that explore encounters among the Sinophone and other cultural contexts; for Chinese-language submissions, there are no specific requirements for content.

The winners each will receive a monetary prize, translation of their winning work (either from English to Chinese, or vice versa), and bi-lingual e-publication by the Performance Center of National Central University in Taiwan. The premiere staged reading and workshop will take place in Taiwan shortly after winners are announced, and a series of readings by our partners around the world over the following two (2) years will offer winning playwrights an unprecedented opportunity for international circulation of their work. HighTide exists to discover and nurture exciting new plays by exceptional emerging writers. As we enter our tenth year, our writers have consistently shaped the mainstream of new writing theatre today. Could you be next?

We want audacious, challenging and inspiring writing that reflects the Britain and wider world we live in today. Writers from anywhere can apply, although we are particularly interested in writers from communities and demographics that are underrepresented and underserved by British theatre.

In order to apply, you will need:

- A 20 page extract of your proposed piece.
- An accompanying synopsis of the whole narrative of the play, which should include a brief paragraph contextualising your extract.
- A completed Equal Opportunities Monitoring form.
- A completed online application form

All plays must be a minimum of one hour long.

We do not accept screenplays, treatments or radio plays.

We welcome international writers to submit as long as the play is in English.

We only consider one script from any writer at a time. Should you have more than one play, please only submit the play you most wish to be professional produced.

We do not produce plays that have had a premiere, full production or previous staging.

Watermelon Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the theater arts and to providing a nurturing and educational environment for original works written by both students and adults.

Submission deadline is February 14, 2016
WOAF is an excellent opportunity to showcase an original one-act play in a competitive environment and to receive instructional feedback that will help to further develop the play for future productions. Cash prizes totaling more than $1,000 will be given to the best overall script, audience choice, production/director, ensemble, and performers.

We welcome all original and unpublished works between 10 and 65 minute running time (includes set up/breakdown and curtain call). Ten to fourteen entries will be selected based on the quality of the writing, story/plot, and character development. Minimal technical requirements is advised as there are only 60 minutes for a technical rehearsal, all props and actors must fit into a 10- by 10-foot space, and there is no technical award.

To submit a play is completely free and up to three scripts can be submitted per participant. However, if selected, a non-refundable $100 entry fee is required to assist with defraying festival expenses.

Watermelon is NOT producing the play, merely presenting the finished product, which may be performed a total of two times if selected as a finalist.
