The Anna Zornio Children's Theatre Playwriting Award

The University of New Hampshire’s Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to announce the playwriting contest for new children’s plays and musicals. The University is offering 1) a cash prize, up to $500, to a winning playwright(s), and 2) either a staged, fully staged, or touring production as determined by the needs of UNH Theatre and Dance Department.

This award was created to honor the late Anna Zornio, an alumna of the University of New Hampshire, for her dedication to and inspiration of children’s theater playwriting.
Competition Guidelines

Contest registrations are due by March 1, 2017. The award will be administered by the Director of the UNH Theatre Education Program. The Department of Theatre and Dance will reserve the right to withhold the award if, in its opinion, no submissions merit the award. The award will be announced November, 2017. All candidates will be notified of the contest results.
The University of New Hampshire will not be able to offer feedback for submitted scripts.
Hard copy scripts, sheet music and CD’s will not be able to be mailed back.
The winning Playwright will be required to sign a letter of agreement giving permission for the University of New Hampshire to perform the play with no additional royalties or fees. The Playwright also agrees that any published version of the play will include the following statement: “Winner of The Anna Zornio Children's Theatre Playwriting Award through the Theatre and Dance Department at the University of New Hampshire.”
Rules for Entry

1. The contest is open to all playwrights residing in the United States and Canada.

2. All ages are invited to participate.

3. The contest is for new plays, with a maximum length of 60 minutes and suitable for young audiences (adults will perform for children.)

4. Plays submitted must not have been fully produced at the time of submission, though it may have been workshopped or done as a staged reading for the purpose of revision; previously produced winner of an award or prize in another playwriting contest; and must not be under contract for publication before UNH’s announcement of the award winner; DOES NOT EXCEED A SIXTY-MINUTE RUN TIME. A statement stipulating all of the above items MUST be included on the registration form.

5. Playwrights may submit more than one play, but not more than three.

6. Only digital copies of the scripts will be accepted (no hard copies).

7. Each submission should include:
cast list
description of characters
a statement of design/technical considerations (the producers particularly need to know if you intend a multi-location set or unit set design motif)

8. For musical submissions, a CD of the music with lyrics sung and accompanying sheet music should be sent to:

Edward F. Albee Foundation guidelines

The Edward F. Albee Foundation exists to serve writers and visual artists from all walks of life, by providing time and space in which to work without disturbance.

Using only talent and need as the criteria for selection, the Foundation invites any and all artists to apply.

Guidelines

APPLICANTS must prepare:

• Visual Arts: 6-12 images and/or 3 media files

• Plays/Screenplays: A full manuscript (one act plays count as a full script)

• Poetry: Up to 12 poems

• Fiction: 1 short story or 2 chapters from a novel

• Non-fiction / Memoir / Journalism: 2 essays/articles or 2 chapters from a book

Please note: writers who write in a foreign language should apply with English translations of their work.

You must be able to take full credit for the creation of your work sample. No collaborations unless applying as a team!

ALL APPLICANTS must also include:

• An up to date resumé

• Email addresses of 2 professionals familiar with you and your work (your recommenders will be contacted for letters by us)

• An artist’s statement explaining your current need for a residency, as well as the details of the proposed project while in residence

The Princeton Theatre Group New Works Festival - seeking 10 minute and one-act plays

Winners will receive a staged reading by professional actors during Festival 56, Illinois’ largest summer theatre festival. The New Works Festival will also include a playwrights’ reception and opportunities to receive feedback of the winning works. No entry fee — No cash prizes

Competition Rules

Only complete scripts will be considered; no excerpts from longer works.

Scripts must be original, unpublished, and not previously produced.

Each playwright may submit only one script per category. It is possible for a playwright to win in both categories.

Competition is open to adult playwrights around the English-speaking world. No juvenile writers.

Target audience: adults, including young adults.

Genre: comedy, drama, tragedy, farce, hybrid; theatrical storytelling. No monologues, children’s plays, adaptations, or musicals.

Cast may contain any number of characters of any race, ethnicity, or gender.

Theme and subject matter are open; however, excessively strong language is discouraged.

Winners will grant Festival 56 and Princeton Theatre Group first production rights. Playwrights retain copyright.

At least one One-Act and up to six Ten-Minute scripts will be selected for staged readings. Total number of winners will depend upon the number and range of submissions.

The decision of the judges is final. Judges will not provide any written or verbal critiques.

• Winning playwrights are strongly encouraged to attend their readings, although attendance is not a requirement for winning. If the playwright is present, a talkback with the audience and actors will immediately follow the reading of each script.

Criteria for selection
  • Well developed storyline within a short work 
  • Natural and creative dialogue 
  • Quality of writing and dramatic structure 
  • Ability of script to connect with an audience 

Submission Guidelines

Type script with 1-inch margins on all four edges, using a 12-point serif type such as Times New Roman, Palatino, or Courier.

Use standard script format including cast of characters, setting, etc.

Do NOT put your real name on your script! On the first page of the script, under the title, put a pen name of your choice.
Use the script title as the name of this document.

Create a separate document giving your real name, address, email, phone, the title of your script, and either your real age or the statement “I am over 18.”
Use your pen name as the name of this document.
This document will not be opened until after winners have been selected.

Attach both the script document and the identifying document to an email as a Word doc, Pages doc, or PDF.

Play Submission Guidelines

The play selection team is now accepting script submissions for consideration! If your submission is chosen, your play will be performed in July 2017 at CVLT’s River Street Playhouse. This is a “black box” environment which seats approximately 65 patrons. It has limited wing space, no fly system, and rudimentary lighting. Playwrights whose scripts are chosen will be contacted early in 2017.
  • Plays must be received by no later than February 28, 2017. 
  • You must be 18 years or older to submit a script.
  • Scripts must be complete. Scenes from a full-length production or from other works cannot be accepted.
  • Your show should have an estimated production “running time” of 10-12 minutes.
  • Your script must be original – CVLT will not accept responsibility for copyright violations.
  • CVLT reserves the right to choose directors for each play. You may not direct your own production.
  • While the primary mission of The 10-10 is to introduce works that have not been read or produced in public, we are accepting previously produced/read scripts for consideration.
  • You may submit multiple plays. We ask that you submit only your best scripts and keep the number of submissions to a reasonable amount.
  • CVLT cannot compensate you for your submission, nor will you receive compensation if your script is chosen for production. Our actors and staff are volunteers. All proceeds from the production go to actual production costs and facility upkeep.
  • CVLT will not produce, release, or distribute your work without permission.

UN-CHARTED NEW WORKS FESTIVAL

What is UN-Charted?

UN-Charted is a New Works Festival dedicated to giving playwrights, composers, librettists and lyricists an opportunity to have their work performed by professionals. Slated for the month of July, 2017, fifty miles north of Manhattan, under the stars on the Common at The Fairfield Museum in Fairfield, CT, Unquowa Repertory will present between two and four works that are in development and in need of an audience.

How does it work?

Selected writers will work daily with a director and company of Equity performers, as well as a music director, should the piece be a musical. A stipend, and transportation from NYC are provided for each artist selected. Writers who do not live in the NY Metro area should still apply as financial aid for transportation or housing may be available.
What can be submitted?

Submitted projects should be works in development and not have had a professional production prior to the UN-Charted Festival. We will consider both original and adapted works, providing that the rights to any material not in the public domain have been granted in writing and a copy has been included with the applicant’s materials.
How Do I Submit?

To apply for inclusion in the Festival, please have the following materials ready:
  • A letter of introduction
  • Contact information, i.e. email address, phone number, mailing address
  • Biographical information for each member of the writing team
  • Proof of rights, if the work is an adaptation of copyrighted material
  • A synopsis (no more than one page, please)
  • A character breakdown specifying age, gender and ethnicity (if important)
  • The first 30 pages of the script/libretto

Important Dates

Unquowa Repertory will be accepting submissions until February 28th, 2017. If we feel your piece is a good fit for UN-Charted, we will request a full script and further demos by mid to late March. Final decisions for UN-Charted 2017 will be made by the end of April, 2017, when all applicants will receive an email either thanking you for your submission or inviting you to present at UN-Charted.

Helen McCloy Scholarship

What Is It? The Helen McCloy/MWA Scholarship for Mystery Writing seeks to nurture talent in mystery writing—in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting.

Who May Apply? The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents only. Membership in Mystery Writers of America is not required to apply. The McCloy Scholarship is intended for serious aspiring mystery writers who wish to improve their writing skills. Applicants should not have received monetary compensation for novels, short stories, non-fiction, screenplays or play scripts in the crime-writing genre.

How Shall the Scholarship Be Used? The scholarship shall be used to offset tuition and fees for writing workshops, writing seminars, or university/college-level writing programs taking place in the U.S. in summer, fall or winter of 2017 or early spring 2018. Applicants must select a specific writing class/workshop/seminar to which scholarship funds would be applied.
To be eligible, the chosen writing program must require the applicant to produce writing and to have writing critiqued. Writing conferences featuring only panels and agent conferences are not eligible.

What Is the Scholarship Amount? MWA will present two scholarships for up to $500 each. Scholarship checks are issued in late Spring and are made out jointly to scholarship winners and their chosen educational institutions.

Submission Details Applicants are required to submit:

* ONE Scholarship application form, completed – 2017 McCloy Application Form

* ONE copy of the official description of the writing class/workshop/program (from college catalog, workshop brochure, or other.)

* One copy of a 300- to 500-word essay explaining the applicant’s interest in mystery writing

* One copy of a sample of mystery writing for judging: either a synopsis and 3 chapters from a novel, or 3 short stories, or 3 short nonfiction pieces, or 1 screenplay or 1 play script

ANNOUNCING PLAYFEST 2017 NEW PLAY SUBMISSIONS

Orlando Shakespeare Theater will be performing seven new plays for the PlayFest 2017 weekend, November 2–5, 2017. In Round 1, we will accept submissions from January 1, 2017 through March 1, 2017 of 10 pages from new plays to be considered for PlayFest 2017.

WHAT TYPES OF PLAYS ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We look for scripts that are appropriate for our Goldman Theater, an intimate proscenium theater that seats 118. Typical cast size for the Goldman Theater is 1–8.

We are especially interested in scripts that speak to the issues that our audiences are experiencing right now. Past PlayFest plays have dealt with issues of racism, autism, gender, Alzheimer's, immigration, etc. Our Shakespeare and classical productions deal with “timeless issues” and we like for our new plays to deal with modern “issues of our times.”

ELIGIBILITY
For a script to be eligible for inclusion in PlayFest 2017, a play does NOT have to be a world premiere, but it must be a “new” play. For our purposes, that means it cannot:

1. Have had more than two previous professional (AEA) productions before PlayFest 2017
2. Have been published
3. Have had an AEA production in New York City or Orlando
4. Most importantly, the author must still be developing and working on the script.

ROUND 1 PROCESS - UNSOLICITED 10 PAGES
For unsolicited scripts, please send us the following from January 1, 2017 through March 1, 2017:
1. A brief bio about you (100-150 words)
2. A brief synopsis of the play (100-200 words)
3. A brief character breakdown (1-2 sentences that describe each character)
4. 10 pages from the script

Please send us your BEST consecutive ten pages, not necessarily the first ten. We want to be able to get a strong sense of your use of language and dialogue to tell your story. We do not have the staff necessary to read full unsolicited scripts, but we are excited to read your best 10 pages and then ask for your full script as a part of Round 2. Full script submissions for Round 1 will NOT be read or considered for PlayFest.

2017 is the inaugural year of The Future Is Female Festival, a national festival with 22 outposts across the United States. As the only in MPLS, Pretty Shrew Productions invites female-identified playwrights of all intersecting identities to create short plays on the subject “the future is female” and what that looks like and/or means to them.

The Future Is Female Festival: MPLS will consist of five plays to be performed as staged readings with professional actors from the Twin Cities at the Playwrights' Center. Selected playwrights will receive a monetary prize for their contribution.

All submisions must be received by 5:00pm on Tuesday, March 7th, 2017.

The Future Is Female Festival will take place at the Playwrights' Center on Monday, March 27th at 7:00pm.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Play must adhere to the theme “the future is female”
Plays must have 1-5 actors maximum

The Future Is Female Festival celebrates the diversity of female voices - please include a brief, informal statement (200 word max) describing how your play makes an impact regarding this theme

Urban Stages Emerging Playwright Award Submission Guidelines

No deadline. Year-round submissions accepted.

It begins with submitting your play and being selected for step 1 of our process - a staged reading. Out of hundreds of submissions a year, we select 15-20 plays for readings. From these, we select 1-3 plays annually to go on to our workshopping phase. Our workshops are meant to prepare a play for our Off-Broadway stage. From our workshops, we select 1-2 plays for full productions, complete with a playwright’s contract and compensation (separate from the award).

Our $500 Emerging Playwright Award (coupled with press coverage) is given to playwrights who show excellence and dedication throughout this process – from development to the stage.

Woodward/Newman Drama Award

The fee will be waived for Dramatist Guild members with an enclosed photocopy of a membership card.

The BPP is accepting submissions for the 2016-17 Woodward/Newman Drama Award. Submissions are due by March 1, 2016. The top 10 finalists will be announced at the end of May with the winner announced in June 2016.

  1. "Full-length" plays will have a complete running time of between 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) to 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes).
  2. Plays submitted must be unpublished at the time of submission. Plays that have received developmental readings, workshop productions, or productions at small theatre companies are acceptable. No scripts with previous productions at major regional theaters will be accepted. Once entered, subsequent activity does not change the acceptability of the script.
  3. Each submission must include a synopsis (1 page or less) including the cast size. A separate page should include a brief bio of the playwright, and production/development history if applicable.
  4. Each submission must include a cover letter with contact information and a $10.00 reader fee. Agent submissions require no fee. The fee will be waived for Dramatist Guild members with an enclosed photocopy of a membership card. Make sure to note with your submission that you have paid the reader fee online.
  5. It is preferable for musicals to include a demo CD. The complete score is not necessary but may be included. All plays are read by BPP's literary personnel led by and including the Literary Manager and Artistic Director.
  6. We do not accept email submissions. Scripts will not be returned. Blind submissions are not necessary. Please include all contact information. Plays submitted in previous years will be accepted.
  7. The BPP reserves the right not to name a winner and/or name a winner but not commit to a reading or production.

Adapt your Play (or any material) into a Screenplay


This class is for writers wishing to adapt source material of any form (play, novel, tv show, web series...the sky's the limit!) into a screenplay, focusing on adapting specifically with the camera in mind. You will discuss each person's adaptation, as well as the rights to the original source material, and what one can gain from doing an adaptation. Richard will be hands-on in class, talking to you about your project as if he were directing it, and asking the same questions a director would if they were going to film your adaptation. By the end of ten weeks, you should have a first draft of your screenplay.

Hudson Theatre Works, a member of the New Jersey Theater Alliance, whose production of “A Steady Rain” was chosen as one of the best productions in New Jersey for 2016 by the Star Ledger and who was nominated for a New Jersey Stage Award as one of the "Best Places to See a World Premiere,” is currently accepting submissions for its acclaimed reading series PlayWorks.

Submitted plays should not have been previously produced and should be works in progress or new scripts. Preferably, the plays chosen for our PlayWorks series are being presented to an audience for the first time, offering the playwright the opportunity to receive valuable feedback at the end of the reading. We are interested in character-driven stories that comment on society. Several of the plays read in our PlayWorks series have subsequently been produced at HTW and elsewhere.

Submissions from New Jersey based playwrights will be given priority.

Every summer Capital Stage presents professional staged readings of new works through the PLAYWRIGHTS’ REVOLUTION. We seek submissions for new plays from December 1, 2016 – February 28, 2017.

Description
As Sacramento’s leader of bold, thought-provoking theatre, Capital Stage created the PLAYWRIGHTS’ REVOLUTION. This series of staged readings seeks to identify and develop exciting new plays and playwrights. These new works are brought to theatrical life through a series of staged readings performed by professional actors in Capital Stage’s intimate theatre. Capital Stage invites audiences to take part in the new play development process by attending readings and participating in post-reading discussion.

Qualifications
Capital Stage is particularly interested in plays that fulfill our mission to bring bold, thought-provoking work to the region. Plays must be full-length in any genre: comedy, drama, musical, etc. Translations, collections of one-acts, children’s plays and any play that has received a full-scale, professional production prior to submission are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading or non-professional production are still eligible. Only one submission per playwright is allowed each year.

The Selection Process
Capital Stage’s competitive selection process consists of two rounds of selection. All play excerpts submitted during the first round, averaging 300 submissions, are reviewed. Then, selected playwrights are asked to provide a full manuscript of their play. Finally, Capital Stage invites 4 to 6 playwrights to have their work included in PLAYWRIGHTS’ REVOLUTION.

Preference will be given to those plays that are aligned with Capital Stage’s mission to bring bold, thought-provoking work to our community.

TWO WEEK-LONG RESIDENCIES IN AUGUST

Celebration Barn is an incubator for physical theater with an emphasis on collaborative process. Residencies provide artists a retreat from daily demands, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in creating and refining work. Located in the beautiful countryside of western Maine, Celebration Barn’s 45 year history fuels a super-charged atmosphere that encourages artists to play on their creative edge, to be nurtured and challenged by collaborators, and to launch performance in new directions.

Thanks to generous support from the Nowlin Family Foundation, the program, including our meal plan, is now available without charge to the participants!

Residency dates: There will be two Show Incubation Residencies, each of which will be one week long. Artists will only be accepted for a single week.
August 14-19, 2017: Arrive anytime on Monday, August 14. We will enjoy dinner as a group at 6:30 PM. Public Sharing TBD. Departure is on Sunday, August 20 by no later than 10 AM.

Who is eligible: Individual artists (age 18+ and at any stage of their career) working with a director/production team and ensembles (with up to 8 members) are encouraged to apply. Accommodations are only provided for those who are creative participants in the project. Up to 3 artists/ensembles may be in residency at one time, depending on the needs of applicants.

THE PLAYWRIGHTS GROUP — A WEEKLY WORKSHOP

Whether you’re a novice or a pro you’ll find yourself at home at TPG.

Here’s how it works: You bring in material — anywhere from a few pages to an entire script. It can be a full length, 10 minute play, webisode, musical, film, whatever. We divvy up the parts, read it and give you feedback. You get some ideas. You go back to work. Simple.

Participating in a group is a great way to stay focused and motivated throughout the process of writing a play. And it sure doesn’t hurt to get some exposure to other writers and see how they approach the particular projects they’re working on.

We’re a loose group. We have fun. And we love new faces. We have people who are just starting out, trying to get their first production; and people who have had quite a bit of success. And there’s always a nice mix of writers who have been members for years along with new folks.

The best way to see if TPG is a good fit for you, a place where you’ll feel comfortable and able to thrive — is to sit in on a session and see if you like the vibe.

Yale Repertory Theatre submission guidelines

Yale Repertory Theatre accepts submissions of full-length plays, musicals, translations, and adaptations. All submissions are considered for productions at Yale Rep and for development opportunities with the Binger Center for New Theatre.

Playwrights must submit their work either through established agents or by first sending a letter of inquiry, accompanied by a brief synopsis, cast breakdown, a ten-page dialogue sample, and a résumé. The Literary Office will review these materials and contact playwrights regarding Yale Rep's interest in reading a full manuscript.

Submissions are accepted year-round. Unsolicited manuscripts will not be reviewed.

Yale Rep prefers electronic submissions. You may send files (as either .doc, .docx, or .pdf) to literary.office@yale.edu.

The First Draft at Primary Stages

JANE CHAMBERS PLAYWRITING AWARD

This award is administered by the Women in Theatre Program. The Jane Chambers Playwriting Award recognizes plays and performance texts created by women that present a feminist perspective and contain significant opportunities for female performers. This annual award is given in memory of lesbian playwright Jane Chambers who, through her plays A Late Snow, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, My Blue Heaven, Kudzu, and The Quintessential Image, became a major feminist voice in American theatre. Buckner.The awardee will receive an award of 1k from the WTP Program, and, from ATHE $500 towards travel expenses (reimbursement), in addition to conference registration and two nights in the conference hotel.

MANHATTAN REP'S PLAY PRODUCTION PROGRAM


How you can have your play produced in NEW YORK CITY!

So this is an idea that we have been kicking around for some time, but now that we have settled in to our new Theatre space on 45th Street, we are going to make it possible for anyone with a good play, and for a nominal fee, to have their play produced at Manhattan Rep. We will supply the director, the cast, the rehearsal space, set and props, and we will bring your  play to life in Midtown Manhattan where one can invite friends, family, producers and literary agents to come and see it. 

For a 10 minute play with 2 to 3 characters:

For Manhattan Rep to put up your production in one of our short play events the fee will be $595.00

For a 11 - 20 minute short play with 2 to 3 characters:

FROM PAGE TO STAGE is a festival of new musical theatre dedicated to showcasing un-produced work and work in development to an audience to garner feedback and create new opportunities for the artistes involved.

We are delighted that the fifth annual FROM PAGE TO STAGE festival has been invited to Andrew Lloyd Webber's newest theatre The Other Palace.

The 2017 festival will open for submissions on November 28, 2016 and close February 28, 2017.

To submit for an application, you will need:

- Information about the piece and its writers (names, cast sizes, etc.)
- A 100 word summary of the show
- 3 mp3 song files
- a pdf of the first 20 pages of the libretto
- 1 piano/vocal sheet music example

From Page to Stage funds and arranges the inclusion of the selected pieces, endeavouring to pay a fair wage to all contracted artistes. The festival is not intended for profit but to allow new work a platform on which to be developed and exposed to new audiences. Our aim is to develop new work, excite audiences about the opportunity to see pieces in the first stages of development, and support the creatives involved in the process.
For the 2017 season, there will be a number of ways that your piece could be included.

Pieces will be selected to receive fully-staged, rehearsed readings. This includes a week of rehearsal, a cast of up to 8, a creative team, and three performances each. The readings are a perfect opportunity for a piece that is finished but perhaps has not been put on its feet yet.

Pieces will also be selected to be a part of the showcase evenings. They will be performed by rep casts and will also receive a week’s rehearsal, creative teams, and multiple performances each. The showcases are 30 minutes long per piece and we will adapt or abridge each piece to suit. (Shows with larger casts are therefore able to submit for showcases, as material shown can be arranged to fit within casting limits.)

One piece will receive a fully produced production. With three weeks of rehearsal, a cast of 8-10, a creative team, and 10-12 performances, depending on the schedule, the headline musical is a piece that is ready to be performed and simply has not had the opportunity.

We will also have a number of Gala Performances, highlighting songs from submitted shows. (A perfect opportunity for shows that are not yet complete.)

There will also be opportunities for writers/writing teams to present cabaret-style evenings of their back catalogue or work in development. These songwriter showcases will be musically driven, not productions, and should be applied for only by writers with three or more shows to draw upon.

What is the criteria for submission?

First, submitted material needs to be in development. We want the artist to learn something from the 2 nights of performance, and the ultimate goal is to inspire a continuation of the work.

Next, we ask the artist to bring in 10 people to see the show. Admission is free, and an audience is an important factor for understanding what works/doesn't work in the piece. Since the idea is to blend performance and party, socializing, drinking, and talking about the evening is highly encouraged.


EVCT Aspiring Playwrights Contest 2017

East Valley Children’s Theatre is searching for aspiring playwrights to become a part of the theatre’s future seasons of performances. Contest rules and prizes are listed below.
  • All plays must be submitted to East Valley Children’s Theatre no later than March 1, 2017.
  • Must include a cover sheet with name, address, phone number and email address
  • Plays must be suitable for children to perform and for an audience of children. (Plays with small casts are not as likely to be chosen for performance; casts of 15 or more are preferred)
  • Plays must be 60-90 minutes in length. Shorter plays may be submitted but will not be considered for a seasonal theatrical production.
  • Plays and musicals must not have been previously performed. They must be original and unpublished.
  • Musicals must include a copy of the music in either manuscript or audio recording format.
  • No entry fee is required.


* The first place entry will receive a $500 cash prize, a stipend for travel, and will be produced by East Valley Children’s Theatre in its upcoming season, if it meets all the criteria for performance. Second and third place winners will be announced and recognized.

Bacchanalia 2017 New Play Readings Festival

We are now accepting submissions for our Bacchanalia 2017 New Play Readings Festival!

 Submissions are due by February 14, 2017, with the festival to open in New Orleans in May. 

 One play from the festival will be selected for a full production

This year’s theme is Protest Plays.

Show us your discontent and artistic ire with the coming regime! All new plays adhering at least broadly to the theme will be accepted, but preference will be given to plays with:
  • Five or less actors required
  • Multiple speaking roles for women
  • Less than an hour running time

A focus not merely on the Orange One, but the larger problematic culture in American politics.
Please understand that by submitting your play, you grant performance rights to Blunt Objects Theatre and any associated company through 2017. If your play is selected for a full performance, monetary compensation will be determined, but there is no monetary compensation for participating in the festival. 
 
Multiple entries are acceptable.

New Aesthetics two-week summer intensive

Application Deadline: February 15th, 2017
New Aesthetics is a two-week summer intensive for mid-career artists.
Each year a pair of international artists are invited to share their practice
with a group of twenty working artists from around the world.

New Aesthetics accepts 20 participants annually. Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience. Please email a Letter of Intent and your CV to corbin@theatrereplacement.org. Your application will be reviewed by committee and you will hear back from us by the end of February. If accepted, a $250.00 deposit will be required early in the year.

In the letter (no more than 2 pages) let us know:
– a little bit about the work you’ve made or helped to make,
– two or three questions you’re considering within your practice,
– why you are interested in New Aesthetics at this point in your career, and
– whether you’d like to be considered for financial support

Please remember to check your respective funders for deadlines on professional development grants. These normally fall in March or early April.

Park Plays Festival

Park Plays is a festival of ten short plays exploring and celebrating the events, environs, and denizens of Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Five plays will be commissioned from internationally known playwrights, and half will be selected from an open submissions process.

Performed by an ensemble of eight actors, Park Plays will celebrate some of what makes Flushing Meadows Corona Park unique: from the Unisphere, the US Open and Arthur Ashe Stadium, Citi Field, the Playground for All Children, the Hall of Science, and the NY State Pavilion to wheelchair basketball and dragon boat races. Flushing Meadows Corona Park represents much of what the borough of Queens and the city of New York aspire to be: a commons for all, a place for learning and relaxation, an inclusive and nurturing playground for young and old.

Playwrights interested in submitting their work for consideration should send their play and a short bio as two PDFs to parkplays@queenstheatre.org. Plays must be no longer than ten pages. Previously produced plays will not be accepted.

The Headwaters program is the source of new plays of the West: plays set in the current, historic, or mystic western United States; plays by playwrights originally from or living in the West; plays that deal with themes connected to the real or mythic West; and plays that re-imagine what “West” means.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

To be considered for the Headwaters New Play Festival, a play must never have had a professional production and the playwright must be available to attend the workshop week (August 21-26, 2017 - Creede Colorado). Since 2015’s festival, our goal has been to more accurately reflect the diversity of human experience by reserving one of our two slots for a female playwright. We will continue this at this season’s festival.

We are seeking full-length plays, one submission per playwright.

2017 Submission Deadline is February 16, 2017.
Any plays submitted after this date, will go into consideration for our 2018 Festival. Responses will be sent out by May 1, 2017. CRT provides travel, food stipend, and cozy accommodations for the playwright. The scenic mountain beauty of this quaint arts town will provide endless inspiration as you develop your work. Prism Festival

Stay Awake! is accepting original 10-minute play submissions for its second Prism Festival. Selected plays will receive a full staging in New York City at Shetler Studios in The Bridge Theatre, June 2017. A panel of professional theater artists will select the final plays. We request one submission per playwright. Deadline for submission is February 15, 2017. 

Plays must be no longer than ten minutes, must be original, and previously unproduced works (student productions are acceptable). We seek pieces that pose a philosophical question, confront the status quo, or somehow empower unheard voices.
Given Stay Awake!'s commitment to education, in particular, the intersection between arts and learning, we actively seek artists who affiliate with an academic institution as a student, staff, or faculty member.

Screenwriting Structure at Primary Stages ESPA

This 10-week class will focus on all the "pre-work" that goes into transforming the glimmer of an idea into a full-length screenplay. You will first screen several contemporary films and analyze the basic principles of the traditional three-act story structure seen in most mainstream Hollywood films today. Drawing upon those principles, Kate will take your original ideas through the development process—from log line, to treatment, and to a detailed scene-by-scene three-act outline. By the end of your ten weeks, the challenging, doggedly-detailed pre-work will be complete, and you can dive head-first into the fun part: actually writing your screenplay!

Big Apple Theater Festival is a new monthly event which presents a series of 10-12 minute one act plays in the heart of New York City. Each month the festival will highlight 5 short one act plays from playwrights and cast from the New York City metropolitan area.

Our next festival will take place April 8th, 2017

Submission Information:
  • All plays must have a running-time of 10-12 minutes or less
  • All genres of shows are welcome to submit
  • All shows MUST be previously unproduced
  • Submission deadline is February 15. Notification will be soon after submission.
  • Productions must be non-union and no Equity Waivers
  • Production values must be kept to a minimum: MUST BE VERY MINIMAL TECH REQUIREMENT. Costumes and hand props ONLY. THERE WILL ONLY BE 5 MINUTES BETWEEN PRODUCTIONS. Therefore, we will only have 5 minutes to transfer props/set.
  • Tickets are $20. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps.
  • There will be a tech rehearsal from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8th.
  • Each play gets 2 performances, the first show will be Saturday, April 8th at 7:00 p.m. and the second show will be at 9:00 p.m.

PLAYWRIGHTS, DIRECTORS AND CAST WILL RECEIVE:
4 hours of rehearsal time (For all 5 one act plays combined). Therefore, Each play will get to rehearse their one act performance approximately 4 times each.
3 hours of tech rehearsal prior to the show on performance day (3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. on April 8th)
2 performances of their one act play, one on April 8th at 7:00 p.m. and the second at 9:00 p.m.
There will be a Playwrights reception following the performances at 9:30 p.m.

Panglossian Playwrights submission guidelines

Panglossian is seeking new full-length plays for our new global/local developmental reading series, Plays in Progress.

We work with writers across the globe to develop work locally here in Williamsburg.

Selected playwrights will discuss their goals for the script with our staff, attend one or two discussion/rehearsals, and participate in a public reading, which will be streamed online. Writers who are not local may participate virtually over Skype.

What are we looking for?

Playwrights at different stages in their careers who share our sense of daring and passion, and a desire to develop their work in a collaborative, supportive setting.

Plays that show muscular language and strong theatricality and that say something universal in a unique way. While we are open to any genre, we would love to receive more comedic full-lengths and smart plays for young audiences.

2017 Jerome Emerging Artists Residency (August) - For MN and NYC Artists

ELIGIBILITY: Through the financial generosity of the Jerome Foundation of St. Paul, residency-fellowships for the Jerome Emerging Artists Residency at the Anderson Center are awarded to emerging artists in all disciplines who live in Minnesota and New York City. There is no exact and singular definition of an emerging creative artist. This residency supports those artists who show significant potential, yet are under-recognized. Examples of recognition include exhibitions, critical reviews, commissions, performances, grant awards, residencies, fellowships, publications, and productions. References, individuals familiar with an artist's work, are also an important component of the eligibility decision. Career stage is a factor but not a limiting one. Many emerging artists fall in the early career category but not all do. Age is not a factor in determining an emerging artist. The term emerging refers to artistic development, professional accomplishment, and recognition.

APPLICATION DEADLINE
The Jerome Foundation Emerging Artists Residency for August must be submitted by February 15, 2017. Applications must be complete on or before the deadline in order to be considered in the judging period. There is no fee for applying to this residency program. The fellowship includes room, board, quiet workspace, travel expenses and a weekly stipend.

APPLICATION
A completed application form includes a resume, CV, or biographical statement (3 pages maximum); work plan; and work sample. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed by the panel. You may begin your application, leave and return as many times as necessary to complete the form PRIOR to clicking the submit button at the bottom of the completed form. Important: do not submit your application form until you are completely finished editing as your application will be finalized at that time.

The Resume, CV, or Biographical Statement is a Word or PDF document that shows education, work experience, publications, awards, and previous residency experience.

The Work Plan is one to two page page Word or PDF document. Write about your work, yourself, and your current thinking about what you’d like to accomplish at the Anderson Center as clearly and concisely as possible. The document can be single-spaced.

Work Samples should be of recent work and should include:

For composers and musicians: 3 to 5 recordings
For visual artists: At least 5 images of work (300 dpi or larger)
For nonfiction and fiction writers: 10 pages of double-spaced prose
For poets: 10 pages of poetry
For translators: 10 pages of translation and original text
For performance artists: 3 short videos of performancesDURATION OF RESIDENCY: The Jerome Foundation Emerging Artists Residency at the Anderson Center offers residencies of two weeks or one month in August. Preference is given to those applying for month-long stays.

LOCATION: The Anderson Center campus is on 350 acres of the historic Tower View Estate, built by AP Anderson between 1915 and 1921, on the western edge of Red Wing, Minnesota, and the buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Center is approximately 45 minutes southeast of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Transportation is provided between the Center and the Twin Cities airport on the first and last day of residencies only. Artist Residents that choose to drive will have access to private parking on the property.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Each resident is provided room, board, and workspace for the length of the residency period in the historic Tower View mansion. Visual artists are provided a 15' x 26' studio. Other workspaces on site include a natural down-draft kiln, a printmaking studio, and an open-air metalsmith facility. Practice space is also available for dancers and choreographers. Dinners are prepared and presented by the Anderson Center chef Monday through Friday. The chef will also shop for meal items for the artist residents, and the residents are responsible for preparing their own breakfasts and lunches, and meals over the weekends.

SELECTION: Residency awards are made by a panel of professional peers and are announced 30 - 45 days after the application deadline. Final awards of the residencies are at the discretion of the Anderson Center. In some instances, artists and writers are invited by the director to participate.
