Theatre503 are pleased to announce that we are once again looking for five new playwrights

Theatre503 are pleased to announce that we are once again looking for five new playwrights to become part of the Theatre503 team – to work with us, write for us and inspire us.

This exciting opportunity has helped us evolve the way we work with playwrights and explore ways in which we can place the writer at the centre of what we do at Theatre503. The playwrights will have a creative home in the theatre, with opportunities to engage in every aspect of the theatre’s work and feed the vision of the building.

Each playwright will be supported in writing a first draft commission for the theatre between autumn 2011 and autumn 2012. At least one of the plays will be taken into full production and we have a commitment to finding appropriate production opportunities for all the writers involved. The only commissioning brief is to be ‘fearless’ and to create work that is immediate, responsive and of boundless possibility.

In the first year of the scheme we produced three of the writer commissions in-house, and a short play commissioned by 503 has been developed into a full-length musical, soon to receive a major London production. The remaining playwright received a full production with the Hightide/Old Vic during their participation on the scheme.

We are looking or writers at an early stage in their career, who may have had some playwriting success, but have yet to have a professional production of their work in London or in a major regional venue.

We are asking playwrights to submit to us by Monday 5th September 2011:

1. A sample of their work.

2. A rough idea of what they’d like to write for us.

3. A statement of where they are in their practice, what they would hope to get from working with us

4. What they’d hope to contribute to the theatre.

We will be creating a shortlist of writers at the end of September, with a view to the project starting mid-autumn.

Please make submissions via email only to 503five@theatre503.com
