PlayLab - Accepting New Members

PlayLab (Beverly Hills, CA) is our Professional playwright’s lab and a key player in our mission to nurture and promote new works for the theatre that speak to today's audience.

Led by award winning playwright and screenwriter, Shem Bitterman,  PLAYlab meets every two weeks on Sunday for three hours. Membership is for two-years and by invitation with participants focuing on creating a brand new work from scratch each year. The year culminates in LAb Works, a festival of selected new works performed by professional actors and directors.

 Application period for 2014-15 is now open.

PROGRAM INFO:

  • Writers pitch initial project ideas to the group, brainstorming and working out the kinks before writing their new play
  • Membership is limited to a handful of invited members
  • PlayLab meets for nine three-hour working sessions from December through May. Writers are required to attend at least seven of the nine scheduled sessions, which take place every two weeks on Sundays from 7pm to 10pm.
  • PlayLab hosts full readings of each of the completed plays. All members are encouraged to attend and support their fellow writers at these readings.
  • PlayLab culminates in an eight-week-long festival of workshop productions and readings of the year's completed plays. The festival, known as LAb WORKS, takes place at the Skylight Theatre from October to December
  • Guest participants: On given nights professional directors, guest writers or actors drop in to discuss the plays in progress, or aspects of their craft 
  • Access (put your scenes on their feet): 
  •  - To the Skylight Theatre Company stages for rehearsal.
  •  - To a wide casting network of Skylight Theatre Company artists, as well as actors and directors from the Beverly Hills Playhouse professional acting school 
  • PlayLab Alumni remain part of the STC's artist community; connected with PlayLab and our Play Reading Program, and with continuing access to STC's stages and personnel.

Submissions are accepted from October 1 through December 1, 2013
