Ice Factory 2014 Festival Application

ICE FACTORY 2014 is the newest edition of our OBIE Award-winning summer festival of new work. Artists and companies interested in participating in Ice Factory 2014 should submit their applications by February 2, 2014, 11:59pm. 

There are no fees to participate in ICE FACTORY.

During Ice Factory, each participating company receives:
-Three days of exclusive technical rehearsals in the space: Sunday - Tuesday.
-Four performances in a 74 seat house, from Wednesday - Saturday.
-Use of the New Ohio's festival rep plot for light and sound.
-Run crew and production assistance from the Ice Factory Intern Crew.
-A guaranteed artist fee.
-Festival press representation by DARR Publicity.

ICE FACTORY does not provide rehearsal space outside of the tech period in the space.

Geva Theater submission guidelines

Geva Theatre Center accepts submissions of full-length plays, translations and adaptations for production on our stages and for the following programs:

  • Festival of New Theatre
  • Plays in Progress 
  • Regional Writers Showcase
  • Young Writers Showcase 

We are looking for bold, theatrical voices and are passionate about supporting the craft of both emerging and established writers in service of our commitment to developing new work for the American theatre.
The purpose and power of the theatrical event has always been to come together in the theatre and discover a new understanding of ourselves. By developing and producing work that explores and celebrates the human experience, we engage in a dialogue about what it means to be human, what it means to be an American and what it means to be a global citizen, in the 21st century.
We try to stay open to a diversity of aesthetic, topic and approach, but plays that we are interested in frequently share some of the following characteristics:

  • Strength and depth of writing which would indicate that this is not the first draft of the play
  • Strong, interesting characters that offer actors something to explore, and rich relationships between the characters onstage
  • A compelling narrative which presents a new story, or a new take on a familiar tale
  • Smart, compelling use of language
  • Action which befits a story told onstage, rather than on film or in print
Submission Guidelines

The following guidelines apply to submissions for our Festival of New Theatre, Plays in Progress and general production consideration.

Playwrights with professional representation may have their agents send full manuscripts at any time. Please note that lawyers and law firms do not qualify as professional representation.

To best accommodate our schedule of new play activities, we have an Inquiry Window, during which playwrights who are not working with an agent may send a submission inquiry. This year’s window is from November 1, 2013 to January 31, 2014.

Inquiries submitted outside this time period cannot be processed. Before submitting a play for consideration, please look at our production history and at the lists of new plays we have commissioned or produced, as an indication of the kind of work we are likely to produce.

Please do not send us the first draft of a play. Due to the number of scripts we receive, we can only read any play one time, so make sure you are sending us your best work.

Plays for consideration in our play development series must not have had more than one production at another theatre.

To have your play considered, submit the following:

  • A cover letter introducing yourself, with your full contact information.
  • Your creative resume and a development or production history of this play. If the play has had other developmental readings or productions, they must be included here.
  • A description of this play, no more than ½ page. This need not be a summary of the plot – we welcome a description of the play’s world, characters and conflict, and your reasons for writing it.
  • A complete list of characters.
  • A ten-page dialogue sample. Pages do not need to come from the beginning of your text but must be sequential.
  • Please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you would like materials to be returned.

A-Squared Theatre is seeking submissions

A-Squared Theatre is seeking submissions of 10 minute one act plays, scenes, or monologues inspired by any aspect of “Asian Mom-ness” for the third installment of “My Asian Mom”.  Tentatively called “My Asian Mom 2.0.1.4”, this is a follow up to the company’s 2012 hit production, “My Asian Mom”, which ran for ten weeks, then followed with the all new works in the second installment in 2013 to large Asian and non Asian American audiences in Chicago, IL.  This devised show was the brainchild of Mia Park, who is also a founding member of the company.

Plays by college students on the African American experience wanted

The University of California San Diego’s Theatre and Dance Department seeks from all enrolled undergraduate students submissions of previously unproduced, unpublished scripts highlighting African American experience in contemporary or historical terms. Adaptations from books and other forms not allowed.

Scripts must be original, unpublished, unproduced and free of royalty and copyright restrictions.

Plays which have had staged readings are acceptable.

Scripts must be 50 pages or longer, typed. Manuscripts must be submitted electronically (see below). You must also include your contact information (name, email, and address); play title, number of characters, institution affiliation, and a one page story summary:

ADJUDICATION
Finalists and the eventual winners will be selected by a team comprised of the faculty and artists of UC San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance and invited judges from other professional theatres.

The decision of the team of adjudicators is final.

The UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance reserves the right to select no winner.

Heartland Theater Company Fowl Plays

What do Anton Chekhov, Sesame Street, Hans Christian Andersen, Natalie Portman, the Beatles and “The Twelve Days of Christmas” have in common? Think The Seagull, Big Bird, “The Nightingale,” Black Swan, a “blackbird singing in the dead of night,” and four calling birds, three French hens, two turtledoves and a partridge in a pear tree.

That’s right – they’re all for the birds! And they illustrate the inspirational power of our avian friends. After all, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush…

This year, in honor of our long-time sponsor, Deanna Frautschi, who is a fantastic bird and wildlife photographer, we will be looking for FOWL PLAYS, 10-minute dramatic works inspired by birds.

Please keep in mind that we are not looking for real birds on stage. You are also warned that we expect to get a whole lot of Ibsen, Chekhov, Hitchcock and Black Swan parodies, so if you want the best chance for your play to stand out, you are advised to think of something more creative. And if we get too many Angry Birds, we might issue a warning on those, too.

Instead, we hope you’ll find inspiration in any of a thousand “bird” idioms and aphorisms – the caged bird never sings, the cat that ate the canary, the early bird catches the worm, birds of a feather, watching you like a hawk – or a song like “Bye Bye Blackbird,” “Rockin’ Robin,” “Freebird” or “Meadowlark,” or maybe you’d rather look to a fairytale or fable like Chicken Little or Andersen’s Ugly Duckling or the goose that laid the golden egg. Or perhaps you prefer to craft a 10-minute play around someone who is crazy as a loon, singing a swan song, an albatross around your neck, mad as a wet hen, a lame duck, a night owl or is sitting in the catbird seat. Or maybe The Birdman of Alcatraz, “Swedish Nightingale” Jenny Lind, Charlie “Yardbird” Parker, Larry Bird or the Saint Louis Cardinals are more your style. What do you start with? It’s a chicken or egg question.

Wherever you find your inspiration, we are looking for plays that celebrate our avian friends. Fly high! Rule the roost! Write us a great little FOWL PLAY.

Remember: No real birds on stage!

This year, we are also requiring a sentence at the beginning of your script to tell us what the bird connection is. Unless you’re a bird brain, you’ll spell it out.

ReOrient Festival of new plays

Call for short plays by playwrights of Middle Eastern heritage or about the Middle East for the 2015 ReOrient Festival.


Eligibility:

-Plays by playwrights of Middle Eastern heritage writing about any topic

-Playwrights of all backgrounds writing about the Middle East

-Plays must be written in English

The Women & Theatre Program of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education invites submissions from female playwrights for the annual Jane Chambers Award!

The Jane Chambers Playwriting Award recognizes plays & performance texts created by women that present a feminist perspective & contain significant opportunities for female performers. Experimentations in form and subject matter welcome. This annual award is given in memory of lesbian playwright Jane Chambers who, through her plays such as A Late Snow, My Blue Heaven, Kudzu, & The Quintessential Image, became a major feminist voice in American theatre.

The Award for the primary Jane Chambers Contest consists of $1000, free registration to attend the Association in Theater in Higher Education’s conference in early August & a rehearsed reading of the winning piece at that conference, hosted by WTP, with ATHE. The winner should attend the conference’s awards ceremony. The student winner is also recognized.

The 10 very best submitted plays will showcase on The ArtsCenter's Main-Stage Theater July 11-27, 2014

The Submissions:

-Please email new, original 10-minute plays with minimal set requirements to artscenterstage@artscenterlive.org.

-Plays that have had no prior productions or limited prior productions are preferred.

-Musical submissions with little or no accompaniment are accepted.

-Plays that have been published are not accepted.

-Monologues are not accepted.

Playwrights may submit up to 2 scripts.

Submit one email for each script. When submitting two scripts, two separate emails must be sent. Do not zip the files.

Email Contents:

-The subject line is the title of the play followed by the words "10 By 10 submission." (Example subject line: Fighint Mr. Right - 10 By 10 Submission.)

-The BODY of the email MUST include the title of the play and the playwright's contact information including playwright's name, mailing address, phone(s), and email.

-DO NOT attach contact information.

-Attach script in standard format (Courier or 12 pt font) in Word or PDF with cast and set requirements.

-There must be NO contact information on the script itself.

The Newburgh Free Academy Drama Department will be accepting 10-minute play submissions for their 4th annual New Play festival. The Newburgh Free Academy is an at-risk high school located in Hudson Valley,NY. The students will be in charge of reading,acting,designing, directing, and producing chosen work.

Guidlines are as follows:

downSTAGEright--a subsidiary of STAGEright Theatre--is hosting a festival of new works this upcoming March, in conjunction with the opening of the first show in the 2014 STAGEright season, and we want to read your short plays!

6-10 Ten Minute Plays (1-12 pages) and 2-4 One Act Plays (13-25 pages) will be presented as staged readings at Inscape (in SoDo), as part of a larger festival of exciting new art to celebrate the opening of SR5, the fifth fantastic year of theatre produced by STAGEright in Seattle.

Playwrights of ALL experience level are encouraged to submit a maximum of two pieces to roland@seattlestageright.org.

Please submit all plays using the following formatting guidelines:

  • Please submit each individual play in an individual email.

Amnesty International UK: Everyone Has the Right

Everyone Has the Right is a scheme supported by Amnesty International UK and encourages writers exploring human rights stories to create compelling and thought-provoking theatre.

We look for plays that are surprising, timely, entertaining and powerful. We seek out unique voices and new talent – writers who are not afraid to tackle the big questions.

OUR NEW SCRIPT POLICY

To be included in this scheme, plays must examine human rights issues as a central and deliberate theme.  We therefore are unlikely to consider plays, for example, that deal with issues of personal freedoms without placing them in a wider political and social context, or where the responsibility for the oppression does not lie with the state or related powers.

In our experience, plays that have not been written with an express mission to explore human rights will not be appropriate for this scheme.

If the play meets the Everyone Has the Right criteria, and if a member of the ice&fire script-reading team feel it is a play that has the potential to be a successful and dynamic production, the writer will receive feedback in terms of plot, dialogue, characterization and its overall effectiveness as a piece of theatre.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Some of the writers receiving feedback will be invited to work with ice&fire to develop their plays towards production, receiving one-to-one dramaturgical support and facilitated script workshops with other writers in the scheme.

Previously, the best plays have received professional rehearsed readings at a partner theatre, or at Amnesty International UK’s central London Human Rights Action Centre. Many of these plays have then been picked up for professional productions at some of London’s most prestigious venues.

SUBMISSIONS

Our new guidelines above have been refined to reflect our experience of running the scheme since 2006. Please consider carefully whether your script is likely to meet our new criteria.

If so, we accept completed plays, in English, written for the stage, which have not been professionally produced in the UK. Plays can be of any length and for any age group. Manuscripts must be sent to us by post. There is no deadline for submission.

The Playwrights' Center Core Writer Program

The Playwrights' Center invites committed professional playwrights to apply for the Core Writer Program. Created in recognition of the particular needs of emerging and established writers, the program offers significant resources intended to further a playwright's career and is available to writers nationally.

  • Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States
  • It is not required for an applicant to have professional productions in order to apply for the Core Writer program. However, please note that the program is highly competitive and designed for committed professional writers who are pursuing playwriting as their primary career.
  • Each term is three years; Core Writers may re-apply for additional terms.

NYCPlaywrights January 2014 Play of the Month: Marlene Fanta Shyer & David Copper

NYCPlaywrights reviewed the monologues submitted for the January 2014 Play of the Month, which was a challenge on the theme "I want something from you." 

Out of 72 monologues submitted the review team selected two monologues - "The Portrait Commission" by Marlene Fanta Shyer and "Us" by David Copper.

Thanks to everybody who submitted work, and thanks to the review team for their excellent performances of and feedback on the monologues: Alice Anne English, Bruce Barton, Doug Rossi, Renee Cole and Linda Sanders.

The monologues will be video-recorded and posted to the NYCPlaywrights web in January/February.

SWAN Day seeks plays by women in MA and neighboring states

SWAN Day Boston provides an opportunity for women in Massachusetts and neighboring states to share their work. Submission genres and lengths for this year's festival are: Short plays (10 min); monologues (up to 7 min); short stories (5 min), poems (3 min), dance (3 min), song/music (3 min).

SWAN (Supporting Women Artists Now) is an internationally recognized day of celebration honoring women artists of all disciplines. SWAN Day Boston provides an opportunity for women in Massachusetts and neighboring states to share their work. In particular, we seek to increase the appreciation for, and broaden the understanding of, the varied works of woman artists and their unique contributions to an increasingly exciting and empowered collective.

The deadline for submission is January 27, 2014. All women artists may submit one previously unproduced and unpublished piece in pdf form only. Email all submissions to swandayboston2014@gmail.com. SWAN Day Boston will be held at the Boston Playwright’s Theatre, 949 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA on March 29, 2014 from 2:00-4:00 with a one hour reception to follow. Please note: As it is the goal of SWAN Day Boston to create a closer bond between artist and audience, selected artists are asked to attend the reception following the SWAN Day performance to engage with fellow artists and audience members.

Pink Banana Theatre Co. is excited to announce the theme of its TENTH annual One Acts festival: “THE HONEYMOON IS OVER!” We are NOW ACCEPTING submissions for playwrights and directors! The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2014.

PLAYWRIGHTS: We invite playwrights – aspiring and established, local and beyond – to submit plays fitting this theme for consideration.

It’s the information age and we are bombarded with news items, stories and images but can we sort truth from fiction? Can we really trust the papers? Can we separate the media’s storytelling from the reality of the people who live out the news? And what is not being reported?

Amidst the global turmoil of the 1930’s, with the Great Depression leading to widespread unemployment, poverty, degradation and misery for the masses, the living newspaper was born, a theatrical response to contemporary goings-on. Newsboy, a street News-seller witnessed the everyday injustices around him and turned from being a passive receiver of news to an activist, looking beyond the surface of what we take to be news and becoming concerned with how to change society for the better.

Now in our politically trying times, the stage is set for the return of NEWSBOY.

We are looking for short playscripts to be part of a new theatrical sketch show to be performed script in hand in Glasgow in February/March 2014.

We want pieces examining, investigating and challenging the current social and economic situation through events of global, national and local significance, and/or the way in which these stories are represented in the news.

Scripts should be up to 10 minutes in length. This can be one script or several shorter scripts but the total submission should not be more than 10 minutes/15 pages approximately. We’re looking for rapid response writing, exciting theatre which provokes debate. We welcome scripts from writers of all levels of experience and you can write in any style or genre. We are currently accepting submissions of one-act plays to be oerformed in 2 evenings of staged readings for our “See, Hear Taste, Touch” series which will be held March 2014 in New York City.

This “See, Hear, Taste, Touch” program will be a celebration of female artists and their work; so, our criteria for submission to the project is as follows:  original work by female playwrights.

Submission packet must include:

• A 5-12 page long play (should be 15 minutes max) with an optimum cast size of 2-6 people. The submitted script must be the script proposed for presentation, with no major alterations necessary and be production ready.
• A Submissions inquiry letter (one page only) which must include:
• Brief history of the work
• Cast size & character breakdown
• Synopsis of the piece (any genre)

The deadline for submissions is January 24, 2014, 6pm EST and the final line-up will be announced in February 2014. Only one entry per playwright will be accepted. The Arundel Festival Theatre Trail, conceived and presented by Drip Action Theatre Company, is now in its fourteenth year. It performs at the end of August, on each of the Festival’s eight days, eight short plays at eight different venues all over Arundel – this year, for example, in a church hall, a kitchen, a ballroom and Arundel Jailhouse. An audience of nearly 2,000 came to see the eight 2013 Theatre Trail plays.

The Trail is firmly established as one of the major components in the Festival and is a great showcase for both new and established writers.

Plays should be between 30 and 40 minutes long, with practicable casting, props and effects. All entries should be submitted to

NYC based classical composer seeks playwright to create libretto for new opera

Classical composer is seeking a playwright to create a libretto for a new opera.  Opera will be based on a real life small American community responding to the aftermath of a natural disaster.  This new work will be submitted for consideration for a grant, no later than February 9th.

Looking for a playwright to write a libretto for one short scene (5-10 minutes) for consideration of the grant.  If funding is secured, we would proceed with the entire opera, and librettist would receive $700 honorarium.  Opera would receive premiere in a NYC concert venue TBD.

The Actors Training Center 2nd Biannual Ten Minute Play Festival

The Actors Training Center is seeking play submissions for its 2nd Biannual Ten Minute Play Festival

We are seeking NEW 10-MINUTE PLAYS that give voice to the teenage experience. Our goal is to provide young actors with 7th-12th-grade-appropriate materials and characters.  Submissions may be dramatic or comedic. PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE MOST INTERESTED IN MATERIAL WITH 3 OR MORE ROLES.

Scripts previously submitted in the last year will be considered—please do not resend.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 31st. 

Selection will take place by February 14th.

Chosen scripts will be workshopped by select ATC students during a 9-week course, Sundays 6:15-9:15pm, February 9 to April 13.  The Ten Minute Play Festival will take place on Sunday, April 13th at the Wilmette Theatre, home of the Actors Training Center.  There may be the opportunity for occasional playwright involvement in the workshop/development process.

Clockhouse seeks dramatic works

Clockhouse, the literary journal published in partnership with Goddard College, seeks short dramatic works from emerging and established writers for its 2014 issue.  Dramatic works can be either a standalone piece or a self-contained excerpt from a play or screenplay, and up to 15 pages in length. Deadline is February 1, 2014.

Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks seeks original scripts for live performance by the On-the-Air Radio Players.

This year the theme is "Voices from the Past"

Looking for scripts written in the style of old-time radio, with plenty of sound effects for our talented foley artists to play with! It could be a new episode of an old show. Or it could be contemporary characters written in an old-time style. In addition to sound effects, we favor scripts with a variety of voices and good roles for females. New this year - a special category for best fake commercial. Give it a show with a one-minute pitch of a made-up product or one that is no longer around. As always, scripts must be family-friendly for an audience of all ages.

Here's what you win:

1. See and hear your script performed! (scheduled for June 2014, specific dates to be announced.)

2. The recorded show will be available for streaming and downloading from our website!

3. Cash prizes! (First place: $50; Second place: $30; Third place: $20; Best commercial: $10)

Rules for Scriptwriting Contest for OTARP Radio Drama:

• The script should be between 15 minutes and 25 minutes in length.

• It must be an original script, unpublished, unproduced and free of royalty and copyright restrictions.

• It must be appropriate in language and theme for a “family” audience.

• There are no limits on cast size, sound effects or settings, but keep in mind that your script should be able to be performed with an ensemble of 6 to 12 people, and the sound will be created by a table full of gadgets, gizmos and the vocal talent of our sound effects wizards. We use an electronic keyboard for musical intros and outros, but we do not use pre-recorded sound effects in general or licensed musical recordings in our shows.

• Up to 3 scripts may be submitted by one author.

• All scripts must be postmarked by or before February 1, 2014 or send by email by or before that date. Winners will be notified by April 1, 2014.

• Scripts will be judged anonymously by a panel selected by the Board of Directors of the On-the-Air Radio Players.

How to Submit a Script:
We now accept electronic submissions as well as hard copy submissions. All scripts should be typed using a standard radio script formatting (see next page for example) and numbered. The author’s name should not appear anywhere in the manuscript except the first title page. Please include TWO title pages: the first one will include the title, your name, address, phone number, and email address. The second title page will have the title only.

Scripts will not be returned, so save a copy for yourself!

2014 Playwrights Festival seeks 10-15 minute plays

City Theatre of Independence is pleased to announce we are now accepting submissions for our 2014 Playwrights Festival.

The Theme selected for this year “Party of Three.”

Each play must have 3 characters. Plays should have simple set, costume and property requirements. Expensive requirements will prohibit consideration. Plays should be 10 to 15 minutes in length, plays over 20 minutes will not be considered.  Offstage voices will not be considered a character. Submissions with more or less characters will not be considered.

All submissions will be acknowledged.

The 2014 Austin Latino New Play Festival (ALNPF) takes place May 8-10, 2014 8 pm 3 nights, 3 new plays at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Culture Center,  600 River Street, Austin TX.

The Austin Latino New Play Festival, produced annually by Teatro Vivo, brings together playwrights and audience members for staged readings of new works and rich conversation, each running just one night.  After each reading, the playwright, director and actors participate in moderated talkback sessions with the audience.

What is the process for Austin Latino New Play Festival (ALNPF)? The ALNPF provides an opportunity for Texas playwrights to hear, see, and receive feedback on their original works. The festival format brings together the playwright to work with a dramaturg, director, and actors to bring their play to life as a staged reading in front of an audience. The rehearsal process for each staged reading is approximately one week.

Guidelines for ALPNF scripts:

* The script is a work by a Latino(a) playwright or focused on the lives of Latino(a)s.
* The script is an original work.
*The script utilizes both the English and Spanish language.
* Scripts cannot have been produced or scheduled for full production before July 2014.
Playwrights selected will:
*be available and willing to collaborate with the dramaturg and the director that are selected to work with your play.
*be available on  to attend the reading of their play, and participate in a facilitated talk back with the audience immediately after the reading. We encourage playwrights to attend all three readings of the festival, if possible.

Submission Information:

*Playwrights will submit their script in a pdf file via email by Friday January 17, 2014 by midnight, with the submission information requested below.
*Teatro Vivo will select scripts to be read in the play festival.
*No payment, fee, stipend, actual or implied will be paid to the playwrights. Selected playwrights incur their own travel expenses. Possible housing in the homes of Teatro Vivo company members.

Artemisia, A Chicago Theatre, is accepting plays for its 2014 Fall Festival of Staged Readings. All plays submitted must be full length and fit within Artemisia's mission. They must be about women, have a minimum of one female leading character and must challenge the audience's perception of women.

This is truly a global call for plays - as long as they're written in English we will accept plays from writers from anywhere in the world.

THEME: INTOXICATION.

Of any sort, don't limit yourself. Anything from a scent, to a person, a place, a thing-is fair game. Of course things regarding intoxicating beverages are more than acceptable, but we encourage you to think outside the box.

Five Actors or Less – This does not mean five characters or less, it simply means your play must be able to be performed by a maximum of five actors.

Avoid Traditional Stage Directions – While this may seem obvious given our “radio” format, it is important to remember that your play is conveyed through the dialogue, music, and sound effects.

Theme/Genre – Small Fish Radio Theatre and Thespinarium encourages imaginative plays that transport the listener. Whimsy, fantasy (other than Sci-Fi), fable, fairy tale, melodrama, mystery are among the types of radio plays we look for.

Short Stories and Poetry –
 We accept short stories and poetry in written form (PDF preferred).

Please do not submit recorded radio plays, stories or music.
We are not accepting produced radio plays.

VENUS/ADONIS THEATER FESTIVAL/COMPETITION 2014

We are a group of playwrights and directors who joined forces to create festival/competitions that offer a friendly (not factory) environment for playwrights to stage their work. Our two festivals run for 12 weeks each: Venus/Adonis (February 1 to April 15) and Thespis (June-July-August) . The extended time allows us to offer five to six-hour tech rehearsals and performances at prime theater-going hours, including two shows on weekends. We also offer excellent prizes.

All genres of shows are welcome to submit to our festivals. If they've already had a run (in theaters or in other festivals) they can still participate, but only with a completely
new cast and crew.

Venus is not only a festival; it’s a competition as well. That means there are prizes! The winner of Best Play will receive a prize of $2,500. Winner of Best Actress will receive $500.

Because of our success with The Venus Festival for Women, we've created The Adonis Festival for Men to run alongside Venus. The Adonis Festival is dedicated to male writers and works much the same way as Venus. The big difference is that its $500 award goes to Best Actor.

Venus/Adonis, as well as our summertime festival, Thespis, is hosted by Cabrini Repertory Theater a beautiful proscenium theater in uptown Manhattan.

First-time writers are more than welcome!

Submissions must be between 40 and 50 minutes long and must be in by January 15, 2014

Only plays from New York and New Jersey will be accepted.

Each applicant is fully responsible for all elements of their production. These include directing, casting, stage-managing and hiring a sound & light board operator.

Submission Rules
In order to submit a play please send the following via email:
1. A 100- to 200-word synopsis of the play
2. The complete script
3. Your telephone number and home address, plus the phone number of one other person in your production that we can contact
4. Your bio

As soon as your play is accepted, you will be sent the festival guidelines and when you send your paper work you will be assigned immediately the dates of your tech and Performances.

All plays will be given a three-performance run at the theater.
Each show is paired with a second, and the two will perform on the same nights.

We make it a point to help you with everything you need. Here are a few things we provide to make the process as creative and unstressful as possible:

Shows will be not be packed into a cramped festival schedule.

Musicals requiring live music are more than welcome. There is a large area in front of the stage to place your orchestra and a fully tuned baby grand piano.
Five-hour tech/dress rehearsal (as opposed to getting just double your show’s run time)

Highly professional, easy-to-use lighting/sound system that anyone on your cast can learn to use. Vast lighting possibilities include 45 different lights at your fingertips with color ranges of all kinds.

Free lessons on how to use the system.

Free venue director from the Cabrini Repertory Theater team–you won’t have to hire an outsider.

Constant contact with the Artistic Director of the venue should you have any questions about staging, lighting, sound or theater rules. You will never be forced to wait on answers, causing your production process to be held up.

A strong, effective and aesthetically beautiful ad campaign run in the theater’s neighborhood, which means access to audience members in the surrounding area

Email blasts announcing your show to the theater’s mailing list

Large selection of props and set pieces that are already stored in the theater, saving you time, energy and money in transporting stage sets

The Jewish Women’s Theatre Culture Klatch

Jewish women used to sit around in coffee klatches sharing everything from family to refrigerators, feminism to free market economies. But those days of sharing have changed.  We’re still drinking coffee, only now, we’re at our computers sipping our java and writing our stories.

The Jewish Women’s Theatre, responding to this societal shift, is creating a “Culture Klatch” — a gathering of women in homes to listen to new stories and share thoughts. And oh, drink coffee and eat dessert, too!

Be a part of this culture klatch by submitting your play, monologue, poem, essay, story, song, etc. to the Jewish Women’s Theatre.  Material will be read in the JWT signature Salon Theatre with a professional cast.

Submission Guidelines

Okay, you’re Jewish, that’s a good start, but how “Jewish” do you have to write? When submitting material, consider the following parameters for your submission:

  • Please check the theme of the season and submit accordingly.
  • An element of Jewish resonance is important, but your submission does not need to feature being Jewish as the prominent theme or subject.
  • Feature women or a woman’s point of view, but not exclusively. Male characters are welcome.
  • Short one-acts (10 minutes max) and monologues (7 minutes max) are preferred.  Will read full-length, but unlikely will produce.
  • Must be topical for the 21st century. While we consider plays set in another time period, we mostly select contemporary pieces.
  • Small cast a must. One-person shows okay.
  • Previously produced or published work is welcome. Please include production and/or publication history. A new version of a classic or an adaptation from another medium would definitely be of interest.
Although the primary focus of the JWT is on the writing, music is often a part of our events. We encourage composers, song-writers, and performers to submit individual work. Musicals are welcome.

Please adhere to the theme when submitting work.  Please submit before the deadline.

UNKNOWN STORIES OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS

Stories from our sacred texts are reinterpreted for the modern age.  Any preconceptions are sure to be upended with this hilarious and provocative show of newly commissioned pieces.

AFO announces reading series for Solo Shows

All For One, the theatrical production company dedicated to empowering solo performers, is excited to expand our new play development program with our Works In Progress series (WIP).

AFO’s Works In Progress series provides an outlet for solo shows in progress to receive outside help in their development. AFO will help connect solo show artists with directors and other collaborators as needed to help develop their work and present a reading in front of an audience, AFO community members, and industry professionals to receive feedback.

4 WIP slots are available over the course of the year. Applications are now open and will continue on a rolling basis. Applicants must provide a current draft of the script, a cover letter detailing what they hope to get out of a staged reading, and their resume.

Theatre Arts West is accepting submissions

Theatre Arts West is accepting submissions between October 15th ,  2013 and January 15th,  2014 for its first The Women’s Project.

The Women’s Project will take place June 19th – June 22nd at the Fallbrook School of the Arts in Fallbrook, CA and will include original plays, visual art, music and choreography by women living in the United States with particular interest in women living in southern California and especially women who will be able to attend the event.  One of the commitments of Theatre Arts West is to support, in a powerful way, the growth and success of women in the arts. We will be producing the Pulitzer Prize winning The Heidi Chronicles in honor Wendy Wasserstein.

We are accepting submissions in the categories of 10 minute play, half hour play, full comedy, full drama, musicals, children’s theatre, and children’s musicals.

ALL MATERIALS MUST BE SUBMITTED PROFESSIONALLY IN PDF FORMAT.

Yale Institute for Music Theatre applications

The Yale Institute for Music Theatre accepts applications for projects at various stages of development but focuses on work that is ready to be explored musically and dramatically with performers and directors. Submissions cannot have had a professional production.

Book musicals and other imaginative music theatre projects are welcome. Only composers, book writers, or lyricists who are current graduate students; or who have graduated from an accredited degree-granting institution (undergraduate or graduate) within the past five years; or who are current Yale students (undergraduate or graduate) are eligible to apply.

Applicants may only submit one work for consideration. Composers and writers may apply as individuals or as part of a team.

Participants must be available for the full duration of the residency. Each member of the writing team will receive an honorarium of $1,000, as well as round-trip transportation and accommodation.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION

Online applications will be accepted beginning October 28, 2013, through 11:59 PM (EST) on January 7, 2014.

All submissions must include each of the following, and all documents (with the exception of music recordings) must be uploaded as PDFs:

1. APPLICANT BIO: a BIOGRAPHY or resume of no more than one page, for each creative artist;

2. SYNOPSIS/SCRIPT/SHEET MUSIC

a.  SYNOPSIS of no more than one page, with a list of characters and instrumentation;

b. SCRIPT with lyrics or a full libretto;

c. SHEET MUSIC for a minimum of five songs;

3. MUSIC RECORDINGS: a sample of at least 20 minutes of music. The sample must include the five songs for which sheet music is submitted. Piano and vocals are sufficient, and a composer’s demo is acceptable though not preferred. Studio demos are not necessary. Music recording files must be clearly labeled and uploaded in sequence. All submitted recordings must be clearly noted in script.

4. DEVELOPMENT HISTORY AND GOALS: a brief description of the work’s history and what the creative team hopes to achieve from the development process at the Institute;

5. RIGHTS STATEMENT: proof of fully secured rights if the proposed project is an adaptation of an existing work that is not in the public domain;

6. SIGNATURE: an electronic signature from the Lead Applicant on behalf of all Co-Applicants (composer, book writer, lyricist)

CulturalDC’s Source Festival seeks 10-Minute Plays

CulturalDC’s Source Festival seeks 10-Minute Plays of any genre (comedy, drama, magical realism, etc.) that relate to one of the three themes listed below. The themes are inspired by the Festival's three Full-Length Plays. Summaries and information about these three plays can be found here.

  • Mortality/Immortality: Seeking plays that address living forever or examine death from a fresh perspective
  • Revenge: Seeking plays that address the need for retribution, large or small, comic or serious
  • Quests: Seeking plays that address the compelling pull to go on a journey to accomplish a specific task

To submit your 10-Minute Play to the Source Festival, please complete our online form and upload your play as a PDF file.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Plays must not have been previously produced or published.*
  • Playwrights may submit only one 10-Minute Play.
  • Plays may be no longer than 10 pages, exclusive of your title page.
  • Plays must be submitted in PDF format.
  • Playwrights must be based in the United States. We are not currently accepting international submissions.

Due: January 10, 2014 at 5 pm. No late entries. No exceptions. Playwrights whose scripts have been selected for Source Festival 2014 will be notified in the spring of 2014.

*Source Festival defines "previously produced" as any production for which the audience was charged admission. The following exceptions apply:

The previous production was a student production (75% of cast were students).
The play has been substantially rewritten (30% or more) since the last production.
The previous production had only one performance.

The deadline for the NYCPlaywrights January 2014 Play of the Month was Sunday December 29. We received 70+ monologues - thanks to everybody who sent one. The monologues are currently being reviewed and the selected monologue will be announced in the next couple of weeks.

Urban Stages looking for new full-length plays

Urban Stages is a 30-year-old award-winning Off-Broadway Theatre specializing in new plays by up-and-coming writers. www.urbanstages.org

PROCESS & AWARDS
All submissions are reviewed by our Literary Committee. A select few (approximately 20) are given Staged Readings. 1 or 2 of our Staged Readings move on to full productions. Playwrights of full productions are paid via our Off-Broadway writers’ contract and gain press exposure. Many Urban Stages’ productions go on to larger venues regionally and internationally. All Playwrights of full productions are eligible for our Emerging Playwright Award (an additional $500 and further press exposure).

WHAT TO SUBMIT
Full-length plays only. Small casts: 7 actors or less accepted. 4 actors or less preferred. Doubling is okay. Any subject matter is acceptable, but plays with diverse social issues and diverse casts are given special consideration. We’re looking for nearly polished plays with strong voices.

We accept submissions of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, screenplays, and plays. We also accept submissions of visual art for consideration for each issue’s cover. Please limit your longer works (fiction, nonfiction, screenplays, and plays) to one submission; for poetry, limit your submission to five poems. For art, please include no more than five pieces. We will not accept previously published pieces.

FLARE editors select work through a blind reading process. Please remove names and identifying features from actual manuscripts.

The publication is printed in the fall and published as an online edition in the spring.

10th Annual Premiere Stages Play Festival

Premiere Stages, the professional theatre company in residence at Kean University, seeks submissions to the 10th Annual Premiere Stages Play Festival.

Agents may submit full scripts; playwrights may submit a synopsis and script sample directly.

Final deadline is January 15, 2014 and there is no fee to enter.

Premiere Stages is committed to supporting emerging and regional playwrights by developing and producing new plays.

Submission Guidelines

  • Plays must be full-length and have a cast size of no more than eight. 
  • Plays submitted must be unpublished and must be works that have not been previously produced (readings, workshops, showcases are okay). 
  • Plays must be written by playwrights who were born or reside in the greater metropolitan area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania). 
  • We seek to support a diverse group of writers and are especially interested in scripts that explore or address contemporary issues. We encourage writers to view our production history for a better understanding of the type of scripts that resonate with our audience. 
  • Musical Submissions and solo-shows will not be considered at this time. 
  • If you would like the script/synopsis returned, please include a SASE. 
  • DEADLINE for postmark of scripts/synopses is January 15, 2014. 
  • Playwrights must have schedule availability in the summer/early fall of 2014. 

Plays and synopses will be evaluated by a panel of arts professionals. The panel will submit their recommendations to the producing artistic director and resident dramaturg.

Playwrights (non-agent submissions)
Playwrights submitting without an agent must include:

  • A brief synopsis of the play (no more than half a page). 
  • A character breakdown. 
  • A history of the play’s development (if any). 
  • The playwright’s professional bio. 
  • A script sample from the play (no more than 10 pages). 

The panel will request full scripts from synopses of interest. Playwrights who are asked to submit full scripts, including those not selected for expanded development, will receive an evaluation of the submitted play from the panel upon request.

Agent submissions
Full scripts will be accepted from legitimate literary agencies and by professional
recommendation of someone with an affiliation to Premiere Stages. Agents may submit electronically (PDF format only).

The schedule for the Premiere Play Festival is as follows:
October 21, 2013: Premiere Stages begins accepting submissions
January 15, 2014: Deadline for submission to Festival (Postmark deadline)
February 27, 2014: Scripts are reduced to four finalists
March 13-March 16: Readings of four finalist plays
April 2014: Festival winner and runner-up are selected for expanded development
April to July: Development of scripts continues
Late June 2014: 29-hour Staged Reading of Runner-up
July or September 2014: Full Production of Festival Winner

Through our Play Festival script competition, Premiere Stages offers developmental opportunities to four playwrights. We provide playwrights with an encouraging and focused environment in which they can develop their work through discussions, rehearsals, sit-down readings, staged readings, and fully-produced Equity productions.

Four of the submitted plays will be selected as finalists, presented as staged readings with Equity casts March 13-16, 2014, and awarded cash prizes. Following the March readings, the winner of Play Festival is selected for a full Equity production during the 2014 Premiere Stages Mainstage Season and awarded $2000; a second play will be selected for a 29-Hour Staged Reading and be awarded $750, and the two other finalist writers will be awarded $500. Premiere Stages productions are consistently reviewed by The New York Times and scouted by major publishing houses. Multiple Festival plays have been honored by the American Theatre Critics Association.

A Call for Submissions of New Musicals

Ball State University's Department of Theatre and Dance, in association with the Discovery Group and the Provost Immersive Learning Initiative, is looking for unproduced, emerging musical theatre librettists and composers interested in having their work performed in the first annual Discovery New Musical Theatre Festival of new musicals at BSU during the Summer of 2014.

Three musicals will be chosen from the submissions and performed as concert readings in the festival.  From the three finalists, one will be selected for inclusion in the BSU theatre season in Strother Theater, and be entered as a participating entry in KCACTF.
