Culture Klatch
Jewish women used to sit around in coffee klatches sharing everything from family to refrigerators, feminism to free market economies. But those days of sharing have changed. We’re still drinking coffee, only now, we’re at our computers sipping our java and writing our stories.
The Jewish Women’s Theatre, responding to this societal shift, is creating a “Culture Klatch” — a gathering of women in homes to listen to new stories and share thoughts. And oh, drink coffee and eat dessert, too!
Be a part of this culture klatch by submitting your play, monologue, poem, essay, story, song, etc. to the Jewish Women’s Theatre. Material will be read in the JWT signature Salon Theatre with a professional cast.

Submission Guidelines
Okay, you’re Jewish, that’s a good start, but how “Jewish” do you have to write? When submitting material, consider the following parameters for your submission:
- Please check the themes of the season and submit accordingly. We will not accept late submissions this year. Thank you!
- An element of Jewish resonance is important, but your submission does not need to feature being Jewish as the prominent theme or subject.
- Feature women or a woman’s point of view, but not exclusively. Male characters are welcome.
- Short one-acts (10 minutes max) and monologues (7 minutes max) are preferred. Will read full-length, but unlikely will produce.
- 1500 words or less preferred
- Must be topical for the 21st century. While we consider plays set in another time period, we mostly select contemporary pieces.
- Small cast a must. One-person shows okay.
- Previously produced or published work is welcome. Please include production and/or publication history. A new version of a classic or an adaptation from another medium would definitely be of interest.
Although the primary focus of the JWT is on the writing, music is often a part of our events. We encourage composers, song-writers, and performers to submit individual work. Musicals are welcome.

TEMPTATION
A delicious and dangerous discovery of secrets of Jewish women in this shocking and surprising show that will surely evoke laughter and tears, but most of all, remind you how seductive temptation can be. Jan 17-Feb 1.
Write about those moments in your life in which temptation got the better of you. OR how your resisted that which tempted you. Share a secret temptation and how you succumbed. Share how someone saved you from that which you were tempted by. Temptations could arise from love, food, parenting or just about any subject! Be creative. Be truthful.

JACOB’S DILEMMA
Ripped from the pages of our sacred text and reimagined for the modern age, this hilarious and provocative show of newly commissioned pieces explores yearning, betrayal and loss, and just might upend your preconceptions about the bible. March 6-March 21
Find the archetypes and universal themes of the stories of Jacob in the Bible and then share how these themes play out in your own life today. Don’t retell a biblical story, tell us a contemporary story–your story. Jacob traveled widely, fell in love with one sister, but married another. He was betrayed. He yearned. He loved. He had many children. What do we learn from his story and how is his journey relatable to your life? Tell us a story that illuminates a universal theme.

CHUTZPAH & SALSA
Our sisters south of the border serve up funny, poignant and pivotal moments in their lives as they share what it means to have a Latina heart and a Jewish soul. May 15–May 30
Are you Latina? Do you have a Latina soul? Tell us what it’s like to be a Jew and Latina. Did you move to the USA from another country? What was that like? Tell us your stories of being a stranger in a strange land. Tell us about your family. Tell us what it is to be Jewish from a very different culture!
