T. Schreiber Theatre seeks 10-minute plays

T. Schreiber Theatre is currently accepting submissions of 10-minute plays that explore the idea of CHALLENGES. We encourage creative interpretations of the idea, both dramatic and comedic. We invite playwrights to submit pieces ranging from, but not limited to: political, personal, historical, religious, and fictional topics. 8 plays will be chosen to receive a 3-week run at T. Schreiber in February 2017.

Script submissions will be accepted from Thursday, June 2, 2016 until Tuesday, August 2, 2016

DEADLINE for submissions is Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016 at 11:59pm EST.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

-Plays must be 10 minutes or less in length (substantially longer plays will not be considered)

-Script should be in English, though submissions are accepted from playwrights worldwide

-Theme of “challenges” should be explored in play, though subject matter is open to the playwright’s imagination

-Seeking complete plays, rather than an excerpt from a larger piece – No musicals

-T. Schreiber recognizes the financial burden that multiple submission fees cost budding playwrights. It is part of our mission to encourage aspiring writers and as such, we accept financial responsibility for producing the winning plays. Therefore, the is NO SUBMISSION FEE for this year’s Schreiber Shorts!

If chosen, your play will receive a fully staged production and 3-week run at T. Schreiber’s Gloria Maddox Theatre.

-A director is assigned to each play. Auditions will be held, and a cast consisting largely of T. Schreiber students (both Equity and non-Equity actors) will be assembled.

-Rehearsal period of no less than one month before tech.

-We will supply a Stage Manager and technician to run sound and rights.

-Your play must fit within our theatre performance space. Tech abilities are limited, i.e. no special effects, with minimal required set, props, and costumes.

*We encourage submissions that make creative use of sound and lighting for atmosphere. Live sound (including Foley sound effects) is encouraged, as well as any pre-recorded sounds or music you imagine being part of your play. We have a wide variety of lighting instruments available (so specials and practicals are okay), although we do not have moving lights or a follow spot.

-Selected playwright finalists will be contacted no later than Monday, October 3rd.

Both new and previously produced works will be considered. Please include the production history of your piece. (Please note, T. Schreiber has an additional annual New Works Project specifically for full-length plays that have never been produced.)

By submitting an entry for Schreiber Shorts, you are affirming that you are the sole creator of the play and entitled to confer performance rights. You further affirm that, if your play is chosen, you will grant performance rights, royalty-free, to T. Schreiber Theatre for up to sixteen performances during its production of Schreiber Shorts 2017. The play remains the sole property of the playwright.

Crossing Borders Repertory – Fall Reading

Crossing Borders Repertory is a theater venture showcasing new and emerging writers and new work. Our mission is to explore topics that either directly or indirectly involve the crossing of borders between people: countries, religions, generations or life-stages; class, gender or racial differences—and the walls that must come down to allow the crossing—stereotypes, prejudices, hatred and blindly held customs.

For our fall reading we seek poetry, short prose and one-act or 10-minute plays that explore themes of culture and class. Crossing between cultures, crossing between classes―how does crossing affect how we think, how we live and how we relate to one another?

The submission deadline for the fall Culture and Class production is August 15 2016 but we accept work that fits the Crossing Borders Repertory vision on an on-going basis throughout the year.

DEATHSCRIBE: The Annual International Festival of Horror Radio Plays

The submission window for DEATHSCRIBE 2016, the Ninth Annual Festival of Horror Radio Plays, is from May 1 to July 31, 2016.

Submissions are accepted via email only at deathscribe2016@gmail.com.

Every year we seek 10-minute radio scripts that are genuinely scary, imaginative, chilling, intelligent, suspenseful, horrific or downright grotesque. Writers may submit up to two radio plays to DEATHSCRIBE in any given year. Five scripts will be selected from all submissions. These five pieces will be performed on stage in front of a live audience. The writer of the winning piece, chosen by a celebrity panel of judges, will receive the coveted Bloody Axe Award, as well as a $100 cash prize. Previous winners include:

Guidelines:

PDF format is strongly preferred. If PDF is not possible, then only MS Word please.
All scripts must have a title page with all contact information, but no identifying information should appear anywhere else in the document.

Scripts must be no more than TEN MINUTES in length, and should follow radio drama format. An example of proper radio drama format can be found here: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scripts/bbcradioscene.pdf

The DEATHSCRIBE experience includes performing the pieces on stage with Foley artists and a band creating the sound effects and music live. Therefore, scripts must be ready to produce, including direction for sound and music cues. Sorry, but submissions cannot include usage of copyrighted music.

Writers may submit up to two (2) scripts for Deathscribe consideration in any year.
NO SCREENPLAYS. SCREENPLAYS WILL BE DISCARDED. WE KNOW THEM WHEN WE SEE THEM. (Nothing against screenplays. But this is a radio play festival.)

DO NOT submit full-length plays for consideration in Deathscribe. They will be discarded. If you wish to submit a full-length horror play to WildClaw, see our general submission guidelines.

All submissions must be made electronically. Please make sure your script is formatted correctly according to the guidelines and submit your script as an attachment to deathscribe2016@gmail.com. Please include the title of your play in the subject line.

Deathscribe selections are “blind.” The title page should include the title of the script, names of all authors, and the address, phone and email address of the author(s). The subsequent pages must include only the manuscript title and page number and NO identifying personal information (name, address, email, etc.) or it will be disqualified.

Please be aware that these scripts, if chosen, will be performed by no more than 6 actors, therefore scripts with more characters will require double casting by the director of the piece.

The Bridge Initiative is accepting new plays and musicals written by women

The Bridge Initiative is accepting new plays and musicals written by women for this year’s “Playwright of the Year” award. Stipulations are that the work must be in development with a cast limit of eight (8) and that the writer has an understanding of the next stages needed towards the creation of their play. The playwright will be submitting her piece with the intention of committing time, work, and rewriting within a conscious and measured pipeline of development that will be generated with The Bridge Initiative: Women in Theatre and three other theatre companies committed to the shepherding of the work and writer throughout the process. A panel of professional theatre artists nationwide will adjudicate the submissions.

It is necessary that our winning writer be available for the development process, beginning with a week-long residence in Arizona February 21-26th 2017 with a dedicated director, actors, and supportive artists throughout the week in Arizona, and beyond.

The PLAYWRIGHT OF THE YEAR (winner) will receive:
Promotion of themselves and their play on The Bridge Initiative: Women in Arizona Theatre website, press releases both locally and nationally, and our social media channels. In addition, similar promoting with our network of three additional supportive theatres: Magnolia Theatre Company, WAMTheatre Company, and InProximity Theatre. These three female-focused theatre companies are joining forces with The Bridge Initiative to help foster the playwright throughout her process.
A week-long developmental workshop that will include a professional director who specializes in development, dramaturg, actors, and other supportive artists for the process that will best serve the play and playwright.

Additional staged readings of the play with Magnolia Theatre Company and WAMTheatre regionally, as well as InProximity Theatre in New York City, that will include the support of producer and artists. 

The writer may attend in person or via Skype or FaceTime.
Travel, housing, and stipend for the week of development in Arizona.

Submission instructions: Female playwrights only. The play must not have been fully produced prior to this contest and there must not be any rights attached to the script. Submit online to bridgeplaywright@gmail.com

Application must include 

1) a separate resume with all contact information, 

2) separate cover letter that addresses your intended vision of process for the development of your play, 

3) a separate list of three theatre work-related references with their contact information, and 

4) a full script in pdf format that is completely scrubbed (no name or contact information) for the blind reading process. 

Musical submissions with artistic teams that are at least 50% female will be accepted and must include recorded samples of at least three songs, in addition to the materials described above. 2016 Playwrights and Artists Festival

It is that time of year again. We have chosen our artwork for the 2016 Playwrights and Artists Festival. We, as always, extend first look to those who have submitted to our festival in years previous. The artwork will follow a refresher on the rules.

1. The play must be inspired by one of the works of art below.

2. The play must be written between the dates June 13 and August 7 2016

3. The play length needs to be between 15 – 20 minutes

4. Cast size maximum, 5 characters. Set should be implied.

5. The playwright would need to attend at least one of the two weekend performances (which take place in November). In person is preferred but we have in the past skyped with playwrights. As our festival is starting to reach a greater number people in wider locations we feel that we must take this into consideration. We always hope our playwrights can attend in person and feel the energy and excitement of having their work performed onstage for the first time but we understand that sometimes this is not logistically possible.

6. Plays must be submitted by midnight of August 7 2016.

There are no exceptions to these rules. We love the idea of fresh work based on the inspiration of our chosen art. We choose our artworks carefully. We love to see where it takes our playwrights. Each piece of art has infinite possibilities of inspiration. We wish all good luck writing and can’t wait to see the results.

I realize there are no titles with the artwork so a description of the piece is fine. Hopefully I will have titles for the pieces soon. 

Once the deadline hits I will be taking each play and categorizing it by artwork and the plays will be sent to our adjudicators. There will be 2 plays chosen for each artwork. Once they are chosen I will contact all those who submitted. Please allow for at least 3 weeks to adjudicate.

Park Playhouse seeking new musicals

Park Playhouse Inc. in Albany, NY, is seeking submissions for new musicals by unpublished and emerging composers, lyricists and librettists.

Submissions will be considered for possible inclusion in upcoming first annual new musical festival in New York’s Capital Region. 

Submissions may be workshopped through a staged reading or concert production as part of new annual festival, and may be considered for full-scale professional productions in future seasons.

The ideal submissions will be full length (at least 90-minute) musicals of either one or two acts, and will not have been produced in a professional setting to date. All genres and subject matter are welcomed.

Please send brief description of piece, PDF of libretto/score, and any links to examples/recordings of music from the piece. 

Submissions selected for workshop and development will be notified before the fall season.

London Horror Festival 2016

Calling all writers! Creators of horror! Macabre storytellers! Nightmare sculptors!

Following the success of last year’s short play competition ‘It’s Not What It Seems…’, which crowned the beautifully disturbing psychological thriller ‘CHEW’ by Sarah Tejal Hamilton the winner, we are once again calling for playwrights of all abilities to submit a 10-15 minute script.

Give our female actors a leading role they can really sink their teeth into! Good or evil, we want to see women at the centre of the story, as highly developed characters and forces to be reckoned with.

Ars Nova Residency

Play Group is a two year residency in which members become a part of the Ars Nova Resident Artist community. In addition to biweekly meetings where members share new work and receive feedback from their Play Group peers, members also receive dramaturgical support and artistic match-making advice from the Ars Nova artistic staff; invitations to Ars Nova shows, Resident Artists mixers, and to see the work of Play Group alums around the city; two Play Group writing retreats; and the opportunity to further develop and showcase one of their plays in a weeklong workshop that can culminate in a public reading. 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

All playwrights who identify as emerging are eligible to apply. In selecting new members, we will take into account the strength of the submitted play, what the writer stands to gain from membership at this point in her/his career and the overall balance of voices and styles within the group. Writers of all genders, races and abilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
HOW TO APPLY:

Looking for short plays with characters 55 or older

A Festival of new short plays for and about Seniors.

Looking for as yet unpublished, short plays in which ALL the characters are over 55 years old. This will be a non-Equity, short run festival in Fall 2016 in CT. Playwrights will be paid a small honorarium.

Deadline: August 1, 2016.
Requirements:

1. ALL CHARACTERS MUST BE OVER 55 YEARS OLD. Maximum of four actors.

2. Plays must be 15 minutes long or less. Monologues are accepted.

3. Plays must be unpublished. Previous productions are allowed (congrats!).

4. Simple, easily changed sets will be looked on favorably. No helicopters.

5. No more than two play submissions per author. Send us your best!

6. Please include your contact info on title page and in cover letter. Please include character and set descriptions on page 2 of your script. Previous production history may be included in cover letter, not required.

7. We are only accepting submissions by e-mail. Please attach your script as a Word document or PDF. PDF preferred. No hardcopy submissions.

Generate 31 New Plays in 31 Days

Brooklyn, New York – The 31 Plays in 31 Days Project, an annual event challenging playwrights to write 31 original plays during the month of August will be accepting submissions beginning August 1st. Participation is free and open to the public.

The project was founded in 2012 by Rachel Bublitz and Tracy Held Potter and as a way to motivate playwrights to generate a large quantity of material in a short period of time. Since 31 Plays in 31 Days’ inception, hundreds of playwrights from around the world have participated each summer, many of whom have gone on to produce or publish the work they had begun during the project.

In addition to posting daily writing prompts and playwright interviews, 31 Plays will be hosting two free writing workshops in New York City and Los Angeles to further motivate participants. The New York workshop will be held at the historic Drama Book Shop in the heart of Manhattan’s theater district, and the Los Angeles event will be announced closer to August. The workshops will be streamed live on Facebook.

Topher Cusumano, Executive Director of 31 Plays in 31 Days, hopes this year’s project will offer playwrights even more inspiration and motivation to help them complete the month. As an organization dedicated to helping writers produce more work, 31 Plays is also bringing back the popular optional submissions process. “Last year we didn’t ask laywrights to submit their 31 plays through digital submission because we wanted playwrights to feel like they only had to answer to themselves during this process,” Cusumano explains. “However, participants in years past thought the submissions helped them stay on track, so we’re bringing it back for the folks who benefit from that ype of structure.”

The submission link will go live on the 31plays31days.com website August 1st at 12:00am when the project officially kicks off. Seeking short plays for young audiences

Lit on Fire will be a collection of roughly ten-minute parodies of common titles from high school English class reading lists. Selected plays will be published as part of the collection, and licensed individually for performance.

Plays should be aimed at high school performers, but with the ability to cross over to universities, and middle schools looking for a challenge.

Our preference is for parodies of novels or other non-dramatic material (i.e. not plays).

The Festival will be held between May 1st and May 14th 2017. 

The Festival presents four staged readings of new unproduced plays or musicals, an Evening of New Short Plays and a Composer/Lyricist Cabaret. Playwrights whose work have been presented include Beau Willimon, Y York, Donna Hoke, Kris Bauske, Jack Heifner, Janet Neipris, Craig Bohmler, Hal Corley, James McClure, Rich Orloff, Eric Coble, Dale Wasserman, & Richard Warren.

The Festival is accepting submissions for the following:

Full Length Plays:
  • Both dramatic and comedic.
  • Plays should be original, un-produced full length scripts
  • Plays should be in a development phase that would profit from a staged/concert reading by a professional creative team and open to additional development process.
  • Please no screen plays.
  • No multiple authors or collaborations will be accepted.
  • Scripts may not exceed 120 pages of dialogue and must be submitted bound or in a folder or by e-mail (send fee separately to the address below).

Monsterpiece Theater Collective is seeking new plays for its New Work Series.

Monsterpiece Theater Collective, a non profit independent theater company based in New York City, is developing a vehicle for new playwrights with its New Work Series. Playwrights are encouraged to electronically submit one new work to be considered for a reading series and the possibility of a full production, produced by the Monsterpiece Theater Collective. In order to be considered your play must meet the following criteria:
  • all works must be complete, no treatments or works in progress
  • only one piece per playwright
  • no more than 8 actors needed for production 
  • approximately between 30 - 90 minutes in length with no intermission 
  • sent as a PDF in standard script format
  • plays must not be previously produced in New York (readings and staged readings are ok) 
  • musicals submissions will not be considered without submitted demo tracks for all songs
  • playwright must hold copyright for any material used that is not original to the playwright 
  • playwright must be local or able to travel at own expense
  • playwright is encouraged to be involved in rehearsal process and must be present for all performances. 

Playwright will be contacted upon receipt of submission and again when selections made.

Monsterpiece Theater Collective will choose no more than 6 pieces to be presented in a staged reading format with directors and cast chosen by the Collective. Of those readings, one will be chosen by audience vote to receive a full production. Fraud & Phony, a new theatre collective in Chicago, is seeking submissions of ten-minute plays for "UNPRODUCEABLE", an upcoming live reading event. We're looking for your biggest, weirdest, least produceable ideas. The kind of scripts you might otherwise be embarrassed to send, or that you aren't sure are actually GOOD but that you find really funny, or even the Sex and the City fan fiction scene that you wrote that one time when you tried to imagine what it might be like if Samantha dated an astronaut.

We're looking for your best worst ideas, basically, to be a part of this one night live reading at Trap Door Theatre in Chicago on Thursday, August 4 at 8 p.m. This will be a free event, and will be filmed...so it's a great opportunity to get your untenable ideas performed by some talented actors in front of an audience and SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Five Minute Mile – Theatre on the Run

Cone Man Running Productions is announcing a nationwide call for the second iteration of our series ‘Five Minute Mile – Theatre on the Run.’ The series will perform at Obsidian Theatre in Houston Texas on November 10th – 19th, 2016. Michael Weems will serve as Artistic Director for the series.

We will be staging a one-of-a-kind theatre festival. Each evening, twenty (20) plays will be performed off book by a core ensemble of actors. Eight (8) of those plays will be set for each evening, six (6) will be drawn at random by audience members and the last six (6) will be voted on by the audience. Every night will be a different experience! If the playwright is able to attend, we will work with them to assure their play is one of the five set plays performed that evening. Requirements:

· Submissions will be accepted through Sunday July 31st.

· This festival is open to current residents of the United States. English language plays only.

· Five minute plays or monologues. No scenes or parts of other plays. We’re looking for compact plays/monologues with a start, middle, and end.

o Special note for monologues: PLEASE take the time to read them out loud, time them, and allow for inflection and beats.

· For plays, no more than 4 pages (12 pt font and 1” margins), for monologues, no more than 1.5 full pages (12 pt font and 1” margins)

· Please put ‘Cone Man Running – 5 Minute Mile’ in subject line.

· Please include a short blurb describing your plays/monologues.

· No published works. Previous productions okay if not staged within Texas.

· No work that has been submitted previously to Cone Man Running or Five Minute Mile.

· Three submissions per playwright - however no more than one piece by a playwright will be accepted. If you have co-authored a work, this counts as one of your three submissions.

There is no submission fee for Cimientos.
Submissions lacking any of the following guidelines will not be considered.
  1. Submission will only be accepted through the online form here. (only visible in June 2016.)
  2. Submissions must be the author's own work. The piece shall be free from copyright restrictions and the author agrees to hold IATI Theater and directors free and harmless from all copyright claims.
  3. The playwright must commit to be present on the staged reading performance of his/her work.
  4. The playwright must commit to be present on the PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel) assigned to his/her work.
  5. This program is open to authors from anywhere in the world with original works in English or Spanish who are interested in a New York audience feedback. However, because of the PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel), every playwright must be present to take part in the monthly meetings or commit to presenting feedback electronically or in written form on the dates of the PPP's and with no delay.
  6. Only one play may be submitted per playwright, per season.
  7. Submissions must not exceed 90 minutes in length.
  8. The play must require 5 actors or less. Plays that have more than 5 actors and do not provide a clear and stageable doubling explanation will not be reviewed. If doubling is possible, it must be expressed clearly on the online form.
  9. The submission must be a completed full-length play that has not previously been produced in any setting. If the play has undergone a workshop, staged reading or development of any kind, the playwright must inform IATI Theater of the specifics on the online form.
  10. The author’s name(s) should be nowhere within the script, any authorship information must not be visible in the play document. Scripts will be read ‘blind’.
  11. Submissions for the 2017 Season will only be accepted from June 1 to June 30, 2016.
  12. Please use a standard playwriting format.
*The 2017 Cimientos will consists of two main components:

*PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel): Playwrights accepted to the program, IATI Theater’s artistic staff and other specially invited theater professionals will converge in workshop meetings to discuss the new works that make up the particular season. Every meeting will be dedicated to a single playwright in the program, the focus being in further advancing the text before it is presented in front of a live audience.

*SRP (Staged Reading Presentation): Each playwright in the program will be given the opportunity to present his/her play in a directed, professionally acted staged reading. We just had a play pull out of our Summer One Act Competition (with a $1000 prize for best play) due to an actor conflict, so we are seeking a short play production (7 - 20 minutes - cast, directed, ready to be performed) for the following dates:

Lucky Penny's 5th Annual Festival of 10 Minute Plays will be presented in Feb 24-Mar 12, 2017. The production title this year is "Kids Rule the 8 x 10" and we are asking for plays that include roles for young actors.

SUBMISSION INFO FOR AUTHORS
The REVISED submission deadline for "KIDS RULE THE 8 x 10" is July 31, 2016. The remainder of the timeline is as follows:

TIMELINE:

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES for THE 8 x 10:

1. Submissions must be 10-minute plays that include at least one role for a male or female actor age 6 to 16. All subject matter is acceptable but plays must be suitable for young performer participation. Authors should write for an adult audience - this is not a children's theatre production. Comedy and drama, both musical and non-musical will be considered. Musical submissions must include sheet music/score as needed. Legal clearance of materials not in the public domain is the full responsibility of the submitting playwright.

2. Scripts and related materials must be postmarked by July 31, 2016.

3. Sets, lighting needs and other technical requirements must be minimal. Since the winning plays will be produced, no play considered technically un-producible will be considered.

4. Maximum number of characters per play is four, and for this year, at least one role must be suitable for an actor age 6-16.

5. Running time is to be 10 minutes or less, which may mean 6-10 pages depending upon the density of dialogue. Authors are responsible for submitting work that is within the 10 minute running time limit. Cuts will be requested of the playwright for any selected play which runs over the limit regardless of the number of pages in the script.

6. Plays must be typed/word-processed, numbered, and stapled. Do not use binders or covers.

7. Plays must be presented in proper script format.

8. No electronic submissions will be allowed. (And please don't tell us "Hey, it's the 21st century! Other people accept email submissions!" We know that. We don't.)

9. All submissions are judged blind and this requires two types of cover pages. One, a separate cover letter, will include your name, address, phone number, e-mail and the play title. The other will be on each copy, but only showing the title. There can be no identifying information on the script other than the title. Do not include the author’s name on every page.

10. There is no limit to number of plays that an individual may submit, but each play must be accompanied by the proper cover pages as described. Only one play per author may be chosen.

11. Scripts cannot be returned. Lucky Penny Productions assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged scripts.

12. The eight best plays will be selected from all entries by the reading committee. Notification to authors will be made by October 1, 2016. The eight selected plays will be staged in Feb-Mar 2017 as “Kids Rule the 8 x 10: A Festival of 10 Minute Plays.”

13. The author of the play chosen as the "People's Choice" will receive a $100 honorarium from Lucky Penny.

WAIVERS AND CONDITIONS:

2017 Briefs: A Festival of Short LGBTQ Plays

It's that time of year again, and we are opening short play submissions for our sixth annual Briefs: A Festival of Short LGBTQ Plays, which will be held in Spring 2017 in St Louis, Missouri. The festival is well attended and received and usually gets excellent coverage.

We are looking for plays that are 8-12 minutes in length, have two to five characters and that can be done with simple staging/props (we only use cubes for the set and minimal props), and that are LGBTQ themed. In the past few years, we have gotten a lot of pieces about coming out and also on marriage equality. We would prefer to get pieces based around other concerns unless the piece is really special or offers a new perspective. LGBTQ characters or themes must be central to the piece, and we are especially interested in reading plays that explore the experiences of LGBTQ people of color, trans experience, youth and seniors. Comedy is a plus.

We work with a dramaturg, and it proves a very successful addition to the festival, especially for work that has not yet been produced or that might have needed additional attention. Do let us know if you would be open to using his services if we suggest it.

Please do not send us pieces you have sent before as we keep previous submissions on file, if you are unsure, email Becky at becky_galambos@sbcglobal.net and ask before submitting. You may submit more than one play, but please submit each play separately.

Infinity Stage, Sound & Film seeks scripts

Infinity Stage, Sound & Film is an indispensable one-stop shopping source of new scripts, songs and incidental music, actors, singers & musicians, soundbeds, sound engineers, sound effects, cinematographers, techies, and venue for directors and producers of staged productions and indie films, as well as arts lovers everywhere.

Infinity Stage would love to hear from playwrights, composers for stage and screen, actors, singers, musicians and blog writers. Inclusion on the site is free. Please send inquiries and submissions to mistercomposer@gmail.com

Playwrights: In the body of your email, please include a short summary, number in cast, genre and any disclaimers. Also tell us what you wish to receive in royalties. Attach a pdf of the play or musical (of any length) and a short excerpt. Keep the title and byline, but omit personal contact information. (so that we know the client came through our site). Also attach a jpg file of cover art, if possible, and for musicals, at least 3 mp3s. (musical writers will eventually need a score/lead sheets and, if possible, a backing instrumental track). This is a totally non-exclusive publishing deal. We make no claims on your work and there is no fee to the playwright. We keep only 15% of royalties and script sales to partially offset the cost of marketing.

Actors/singers: Listings are completely free of charge. There are no qualifications or conditions. Just send a jpg headshot, contact info, a brief bio and include a 10-year age range, your union status, your home base, and, optionally, a Youtube or Vimeo reel.

Musicians: send an optional photo on jpg, instrument played, a brief bio, and style of play that is your specialty, including whether you sight read or play by ear.

Bloggers: Please send a sample or previous work, especially theatre-related.

SUBMISSIONS for the 2017 season open NOW through 7/31/16

Devoted solely to producing new and original work, we are particularly interested in bold and innovative plays that are challenging and entertaining.

We are seeking unproduced original work, adaptations of films and novels, translations and adaptations of classic works, musicals, comedies, tragedies, melodramas, kitchen sink musical comedies, operas, light operas, operettas, soft rock operas, heavy metal boulevard farces and many other forms hitherto unknown.

If you can imagine it, then we will make it happen.

We are open to any genre, with a special emphasis on genres that are often neglected in theater such as science fiction, adventure, superhero epics and cross-genre works, immersive environmental plays, or pieces that are truly “uncategorizable”!

While we are looking to nurture and develop local artists we are also open to giving voice to artists across Texas and to other artists national and international.

We are, in short, looking for exciting plays that will move the audience of today and perhaps be a beacon to audiences of the future.

Located between the Pearl Brewery complex and the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Overtime has been voted the favorite theater of readers of the San Antonio Current for six years in a row. The Overtime is home to two performing spaces, one of which is small while the other is quite cozy.

Compensation

Currently we do not have a stipend for playwrights. Writers, directors, cast and crew are all compensated through an equal share of audience contributions and other donations to the “love bucket” which is divided at the end of a production’s run. Artistic staff and the board of the Overtime are all volunteers.

This is not an ideal situation, and it is hardly reflective of the value we believe art should have, but it is as fair and democratic a way we have of ensuring the survival of a theater for the people and by the people.


Guidelines for up to 2 submitted works

Plays

Please submit your plays in PDF format.

We will accept full-length plays, “one-acts” and even shorter works that may be combined with other authors’ works for a full program.

We will even consider cycles of plays or anything else you can come up with.
Serials

We will accept submissions for serial pieces with the following requirements.

1. A completed pilot episode.

2. A series bible that defines characters and story arcs and an outline of the total run of the series.
3. A detailed synopsis for each of the following episodes.
4. An outline of the plan for scheduled completion of the serial season.
Movement Based Pieces/Improvisational pieces/Devised Pieces

We will consider forms of performance that are not “traditional” plays.

For these we will consider them in several forms.

1. For choreographic pieces (dance, ballet, etc.) we will consider pieces with a descriptive text.

2. If the artist is proposing to direct/perform then we will also like to see a sample of previous work and a full CV in addition to a descriptive synopsis of the piece.
3. For improvisational/devised pieces we will consider them based on a descriptive concept statement along with a full account of the process by which the proposed piece will be created.
Other Proposals

In addition to the above we will consider other options for a play or performance that is not covered here. Please contact us with your proposals.

How to Submit

In an effort to be ecologically responsible, the Overtime Theater accepts scripts with all materials (PDF format please) in one email (use link below) no later than 7/31/16. You may submit up to two works.

Please do not email us asking if we received your play, when we will read it or if we will get back to you. Last year we received over 900 submissions and as you can imagine we are very busy reading them all. Yes, all of them. If your work is chosen you will be contacted.

play for voices and words without borders contest

Calling all literary translators, radio dramatists, and international radio drama enthusiasts! Play for Voices, in partnership with the lovely online journal of international literature Words without Borders, seeks radio play scripts in English translation for our first contest.

We invite submissions of translated radio plays of all lengths and from all languages. The Play for Voices producers and Words without Borders editors will select the winners. The winning play(s) will be produced by Play for Voices and published in Words without Borders.

CONTEST GUIDELINES

– Plays must be written or adapted for radio. We are not currently seeking unadapted stage plays or other literature.

– Plays can be of any length, and translated from any language.

– Translators should determine that performance and publishing rights are available before submitting and, if possible, provide contact information for the rights holders.

– Play for Voices and Words without Borders will retain nonexclusive first publication rights to produce and publish submissions.

– Submissions should include two attachments:

* A single MS Word document containing: 1) the English translation of the play; 2) short bios for the author and translator; 3) a translator’s note that includes background information about the play and its production history; and 4) any details regarding rights.

* A PDF of the original play.

– Multiple submissions are permitted.

– Please email submissions to contest@playforvoices.com.

– Submissions will be accepted until June 31, 2016.

Please note: We are seeking only translated plays for this contest, but we encourage writers of original radio plays in English to send us their work anytime!
