Women in the Age of Trump - the semi-finalists

Thanks to everybody who participated in this project by submitting scripts, we had over 80 submissions. 

We will be posting individual blog posts about each script in the next few weeks, two or three blog posts per day.

The finalist scripts will be announced Sunday, January 15, 2017, and video excerpts of those scripts will be posted soon after.

Bill Broyles Award

The Bill Broyles Award is given for a distinguished play or screenplay by a playwright or screenwriter, dealing with U.S. Marine Corps heritage or Marine Corps life.

Submission requirements: Submission must include a brief synopsis of the work, as well as a copy of the play or screenplay.

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation awards program will be accepting submissions for 2017 awards starting October 7. Each year, the Foundation presents a series of awards to both Marines and civilians, to recognize their exemplary work in advancing and preserving Marine Corps history. Individuals will be honored at the Foundation’s annual Awards Ceremony on April 29, 2017.

All winners receive a $1,000 cash prize, a medallion and a commemorative brick along the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park pathway at the Marine Corps Heritage Center.

Applicants may self-nominate or nominate another individual for his/her work. If the piece is selected for an award, the awards committee will contact the applicant for any additional information needed to get in touch with the author/creator of the original work.

Applicants who are nominating someone else´s work must indicate this in the overview that is part of each submission detailed below. Submissions must be submitted electronically in PDF form, by website URL (in the case of blogs/dispatch reporting) or mailed on a DVD. All video submissions should include four copies on DVD format, mailed in a case, along with the category for the submission and the applicant´s name and contact number. All parts of the submission including overview must be sent electronically or by mail together, rather than in multiple parts. Electronic submissions are preferred but the Foundation understands that not all submissions can be sent in electronic format.

The deadline for this year´s awards submissions is January 7, 2017. Be sure to fill out the Awards Program Submission Form and include it with all submissions.

All award submissions must include the Awards Program Submission Form and should be sent to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. Please note:

SKIRTS, the AlphaNYC Theater Company's Winter Theater Festival

Seeking playwrights for SKIRTS, the AlphaNYC Theater Company's Winter Theater Festival. 

We are seeking short 10 minute plays written with only female characters. There is no charge to participate or submit a play. Plays must be 13 minutes in length or less. The AlphaNYC will supply the actresses, and directors.

Performs one weekend, February 16th through the 18th at the new 60-seat Roebuck Theater in Midtown NYC.

Carlton E. Spitzer’s Excellence in Playwriting 2017

HGGT is holding their 2017 Carlton E. Spitzer’s Excellence in Playwriting contest. Submissions are now being accepted through December 31, 2016. Click to find out more.


Contest Details
Winner will be notified in June/July 2017. Winner will receive cash award of not less than $500 for the premiere production.
Winner will permit HGGT to perform the play or portions of the play without payment of fee with full credit to playwright in all promotional and printed materials.
HGGT assures entrants their work will not be copied or used in any way other than described herein. HGGT reserves the right to not choose a winning play.

Special submission guidelines for 2017 contest

We are looking specifically for two types of submissions
Short plays or monologues that require few characters and focus on disability issues in business or the workplace.
Short plays or monologues about figures in history that had a disability or dealt with discrimination.

• Each submission must be an original play not yet performed.
• Each must be consistent with the mission of HGGT: To raise public awareness of disability and discrimination in society through dramatizations of real life and fictional experiences.
• Each must include written permission of all living persons portrayed.
• Each must include playwright’s name, address, telephone, and email address and synopsis of the play and characters.
• Each must be sent in Word or similar format. At least 10 minutes in length. Can be a play, one act or monologue.

Promising Playwright Contest 2017

Full-length play scripts sought for theater workshop opportunity. The winner will receive a prize of $1,000 and a script workshop weekend in summer 2017. The workshop will culminate in a rehearsed public reading of the script at our theater in Annapolis, Maryland.

GUIDELINES:
  • Playwrights must currently reside in Washington DC or any of the 13 original colonies of the United States 
  • Plays must be unpublished and unproduced.
  • Estimated run time should be at least 85 minutes, and cast size should not exceed 10.
  • Musicals and musical librettos are not accepted.
  • The winner will be notified by May 15, 2017.
Judging is blind. No name(s) of the playwright(s), nor any other identifying information is allowed on any submitted material. The materials will not be forwarded to readers for judging if names appear anywhere.

All entries must include four PDFs:
  • Summary of the story not to exceed two pages. Plotline only! Please do not include reviewer comments, notes of praise, or any enthusiastic blurbs that are intended to sway judges or sell the piece
  • List of Characters with descriptions
  • 10 consecutive representative pages from the script
  • Full script (no author names or other identifying marks)

ONLINE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

MultiStages, a multicultural, multidisciplinary theatre company located in New York City, is seeking original, unproduced, high quality full-length multidisciplinary plays by established and emerging writers for its eighth New Works Contest. The Contest Winner will receive a Workshop Staged Reading with professional actors or a Fully-Staged Production at a reputable theatre in New York City under an AEA approved code. The Finalists will receive a Staged Reading with professional actors in the New Works Festival.

MultiStages produces non-traditional multicultural, multidisciplinary theatre works that incorporate a fusion of art forms rarely found in today’s theatre. These fusions include collaborations with artists working in dance, music composition (including opera), visual arts, puppetry, poetry, multimedia, et al. If your play includes music, you may choose to submit with a composer. All submitted scripts must be multidisciplinary and multicultural, and respect non-traditional casting choices. All productions are subject to development by MultiStages in collaboration with the playwright.

The Navigators Theater Company seeks 10-minute plays from women

This winter and spring The Navigators Theater Company is hosting a podcast and monthly trivia nights, and during each we will produce a radio-theater-style 10-minute play reading. We are seeking submissions from female and female identifying playwrights, with the following themes: Aliens, Prophecy, Time Travel, Mars, Virtual Worlds, Apocalyptic Sci-Fi, and Robots. We'll also read any 10-minute play you have that is considered Sci-Fi!

Proscenium is now accepting submissions

Proscenium is now accepting submissions for the sixth issue of Proscenium Journal and the third annual Proscenium Live Festival of New Work.

Proscenium accepts plays of any length and any style. There is no submission fee. Unless otherwise noted, all plays will be considered for both Proscenium Live and Proscenium Journal.

Submission Procedures:

We accept all submissions via email. Please email your original play to submissions@prosceniumjournal.com. Include the title of the play and your name in the subject heading. Please submit your play in PDF format along with a brief author bio. If your play has been produced, please send us information about production history.

The deadline to be considered for the sixth issue of Proscenium and the Proscenium Live is February 24, 2017. However, we accept submissions year-round and will consider submissions after the deadline for future issues and festivals.

Due to the large number of submissions we receive, we regret that we cannot acknowledge all submissions. Proscenium reserves the right to reject any submission for any reason.

Las Vegas Little Theatre's 9th Annual New Works Competition

Accepting submissions until December 31st, 2016
  • All plays must be full length (90 minutes or more). No musicals please. 
  • Plays must have no more than 8 characters – doubling is allowed 
  • The set must be simple or representational. 
  • Ideally looking for subject matter that will appeal to an age range of 18 – 30. 
  • Seeking new plays that have not been professionally produced or published. 
  • Plays will be screened by the competition committee. The top 5 will be submitted to the judges. 
  • Prizes – 1st prize = Production of the play in the Fischer Black box in May plus $150 
  •     2nd prize = $75
  •     3rd prize = $50 
  • Contestants must sign a release form to authorize production 
  • Scripts cannot be returned 
  • Materials that are adapted from or otherwise derived from copyrighted source material must also submit permission to use the material at the time of submission. 
  • The winning author agrees to the production of his/her play with no royalty payment. The author also agrees to allow LVLT to video tape the production. LVLT cannot provide transportation, lodging or other compensation for the author to travel to Las Vegas for the production. 
  • Members of LVLT’s board of directors may not submit for this competition 
  • Submissions will be accepted through Dec 31, 2016. The winner will be announced no later than March 30, 2017. 
  • Decision of the judges is final. Any disputes will be decided by the LVLT board of directors. 
  • Only 2 submissions per person please. If more than 2 submissions are received from an individual, only the first 2 received will be considered. 
  • Each submission will be assigned a number and author’s names will not be provided on judges copies of the script to prevent any bias.

Call for Submissions For 5th Annual LaBute New Theater Festival

The St. Louis Actors’ Studio is proud to announce call for submissions for the 5th Annual LaBute New Theater Festival at the Gaslight Theater, with plays debuting from July 07 - 30, 2017. Submissions will be accepted through December 31, 2016.

Professional Submissions: Successful entries will have no more than four characters and be crafted specifically to exploit our intimate performance space. (18' x 18' stage) Changes in scenery or setting should be achievable quickly and with few major set moves. Our focus is on fundamental dramaturgy: plot, character and theme.

Professional, new and previously unproduced one-act play submissions should include a letter of inquiry, a synopsis and a 10-page sample from the script. Running time for each performance should not exceed 45 minutes.

Up to eight plays will be chosen, in addition, a new piece from Mr. LaBute will be performed every night for the run of the festival. Mr. LaBute is scheduled to participate in the opening weekend activities.

High School Submissions: Winning plays by high school students will be presented in readings. The guidelines are straightforward: The one act should include no more than four characters featuring a clearly developed plot and distinctive characters. No longer than 15 minutes in length.

Non-Professional, new and previously unproduced one-act play submissions should include a letter of inquiry and complete script.

The Robert J. Pickering Award for Playwriting Excellence

This annual award was established to honor past member and playwright, Bob Pickering, and to provide a vehicle for playwrights to see their works produced. Over 30 plays have been produced over since 1984. $200 is awarded for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.
Deadline:

Manuscripts must be received by December 31st

Types of plays accepted

Full length, unproduced plays and musicals. Children’s plays accepted. Unable to return without a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Selection Process:

Chairman and committee members read and review each entry and select ten finalists from which the first, second and third place winners are chosen.
Production:

Branch County Community Theatre reserves the right and agrees to produce the first place winner in this yearly competition. First place winners are required to sign a production contract.
Production House:

BCCT productions are staged in the historic Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater, Michigan. Built in 1882, Tibbits is a completely restored 500-seat proscenium theater.

Women in the Age of Trump - NYCPlaywrights call for monologues and 10-minute plays

NYCPlaywrights seeks monologues and 10-minute plays. The theme is "Women in the Age of Trump."


President-elect Donald Trump has said a number of controversial things, including that he can grab women "by the pussy" because "when you're a star they let you do it, you can do anything." This is considered a description of sexual assault by some, but locker room talk by others.

NYCPlaywrights is looking for scripts about women in a time when the leader of the United States is Donald Trump.

We encourage scripts from first-time playwrights as well as experienced writers.

Although the theme is inspired by the 2016 US presidential election the scripts do not have to mention or be directly about the 2016 US presidential election.

SEMI-FINALIST SCRIPTS
NYCPlaywrights will select as semi-finalists as many of the scripts that we like and which meet the submission guidelines.

The semi-finalists will be listed on this blog and an excerpt from each script (if permission is granted by the playwright) will be displayed in a blog post, one per day, along with any web site links or other contact information the author wishes to share. The deadline is Sunday, December 24, 2016The semi-finalist script selections will be announced Saturday, December 31, 2016.

FINALIST SCRIPTS
The finalist scripts will be selected from the semi-finalist scripts. Between 5 and 10 scripts will be chosen. Video-recorded excerpts of those scripts, read/performed by actors will be displayed on NYCPlaywrights.org  (if permission is granted by the playwright) along with contact information and links to author web sites, author biography and a summary of the script. We decided to do video recordings rather than a single public performance so that people all over the world can see the work.

The finalist scripts will be announced Sunday, January 15, 2017.  Excerpts from the finalist scripts will begin posting soon after that.

THE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
YOU MUST READ THEM BEFORE SUBMITTING
The deadline is Saturday December 24, 2016 at 11:59 PM EST.
  • Send only one play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org. 
  • The script submission should be sent by email, with the script itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be .pdf because it will retain your original script formatting. 
  • There is no fee for submission. 
  • All rights will remain with the playwright. 
  • The script must be submitted by the author of the script, no agents or others may submit. 
  • Make sure you have your name and your email address on the script. 
  • Plays can be submitted by anybody, of any gender, anywhere in the world but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.) 
  • A play that has had a production is acceptable.
  • A play that has been published is not acceptable.
  • Please note: simply having a female character in the script does not, by itself, meet the theme of "women in the age of Trump" - the script must focus on one or more women and their experiences in a world which reflects the values of a country that would make Donald Trump its president. See More on what Donald Trump has said about women for ideas. If the script does not focus on one or more women it does not meet the theme of this call for submissions. If you have already submitted a script that does not meet this criterion, you can resubmit a new script that does, as a replacement. If you don't have a 10-minute play or monologue that meets that requirement, you might consider writing one, the deadline is December 24, 2016. 
  • 10-minute plays must be no more than 10 dialog pages (not counting the title page, list of characters, etc. Please have a title page, character list page, etc that is separate from the 10 pages or fewer of dialog) using standard script formatting - that means page numbers, centered character names in dialog pages, etc. See guidelines and a template here. For some advice on what we think makes a good 10-minute play go here. If you submit a 10-minute play you cannot also submit a monologue.
  • Monologues must be only one page long, using standard text size and spacing. See an example here. For some thoughts on writing monologues go here. If you submit a monologue you cannot also submit a 10-minute play.

Source Festival 2017 10-Minute Play Submissions

Source Festival seeks 10-Minute Plays of any genre (comedy, magical realism, drama, etc.) that relate to the theme listed below. This theme is inspired by the festival's Full-Length Play; please read the summary below for more information about the Full Length Play.

We encourage innovative/humorous/surprising scripts that address the following themes:

COVERT CATALYSTS

Inspired by Topher Payne’s Perfect Arrangement. We are looking for plays that examine a instant of revolution (on a macro or micro level) in an unexpected way. We encourage the playwrights to find a surprising method or action in which to invoke change. Expose and explore tension in a subterranean, surprising, humorous or clever way. Enjoy!


In a 1950s Georgetown duplex, Bob and Millie live next door to Norma and Jim, in what appears in all manners to be a perfect arrangement. The twist is that all four are gay and have cultivated fake identities outside of their homes in order to live truthfully inside. The cultural shift of the 1950s brings about a moment of change when this carefully crafted falsehood is thrown into chaos. Topher Payne’s play (based on historical events) explores this shifting landscape with humor, energy, farce and surprising honesty.

Eligibility Requirements:

- Playwrights may submit only one 10-Minute Play to the the festival and the play may only be submitted under one theme.

- Plays may be no longer than 10 pages, exclusive of your title page.

- Plays must be submitted in PDF format.*

- Plays must not have been previously produced or published.**

INKtank is Rising Circle Theater Collective's play development intensive for playwrights of color. INKtank has a two-fold mission of providing emerging playwrights of color an artistic home and support system while assisting them in the creation of a more developed draft of a full-length script. The final drafts of the INKtank plays will be presented at PlayRISE, a culminating festival event where the selected works receive a public reading.

The INKtank Lab seeks to select 3-4 writers of color who are invested in the revision process of their own work as well of their peers in an artistic community environment with a shared intention of honest feedback and rigorous pursuit of excellence. The lab cycle will be facilitated by INKtank alums, Raquel Almazan (La Esperanza, or The Hopefulness) and Monet Hurst-Mendoza (Lilia, Veil'd). INKtank is a collaborative process where Rising Circle will provide structure and resources, while playwrights create what happens week-to-week based on the needs of each writer.

Applicants must submit the following by January 6, 2017:

• One full-length script that you would like to work on during the lab. The play must be in line with Rising Circle’s mission statement to expand the scope of storytelling on the American stage by giving voice to unheard stories of people of color. We are especially interested in plays that have an urgency to address the current social, political and cultural times. Please note: we are not accepting one-character plays or musicals at this time.
• Resume
• A one-page Artistic Statement explaining your personal rewrite goals, what you feel are the strengths of the script, and what you would like to focus on for the piece during the developmental process. Please include any developmental history of this piece, if it has had readings in the past, or if there are any upcoming readings of your work.

Native American New Play Festival

Open Call for Full-length Script

Deadline: February 15, 2017

The Oklahoma City Theatre Company’s 8th annual Native American New Play Festival invites Native American, Alaska Native, Hawaiian, First Nations, and Indigenous Mexico playwrights to submit full-length scripts written from an indigenous perspective. All themes and topics are welcomed. Plays may focus on historical or present-day issues. We are especially interested in plays that center on an Oklahoma tribe and tribal history within the state.

Selection Process: Full length plays that are received by February 15, 2017 will be read and evaluated by a panel comprised of Native American theatre artists, Oklahoma City Theatre Company artistic staff and invested community members. The panel will select 2-3 plays for a staged reading during the festival based on originality, theatricality, and execution. Finalist will receive a staged reading with actors and a director during the first weekend festival on April 8, 2017. An audience discussion will follow the readings. A full production will be awarded to one of the finalists from the readings and showcased as the featured production for the following festival year, 2018.

All submissions must conform to a standard play-script format (one-inch margins, #12 Times or Courier font, all pages numbered).

We welcome plays that have had previous workshops and productions within the last five years.

 Please include a production history if applicable. Include a title page with full contact information, (mailing address, phone numbers, email address) a draft or revision date and a character breakdown at the beginning of your script.

Please provide a biography of 100 words and provide a photo of at least 300dpi.

Premiere Stages seeks full-length plays

From October 1, 2016 through January 1, 2017, Premiere Stages will accept submissions of unproduced plays (previous readings, workshops, and showcases are acceptable) written by playwrights affiliated with the greater metropolitan area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania). All plays submitted to the festival are evaluated by a professional panel of theatre producers, dramaturgs, playwrights, scholars, and publishers. Our panel selects four finalists who will be given public readings with Equity casts in March 2017. Following the March readings, the panel selects the festival winner, who will receive a full Equity production in the Premiere Stages 2017 Mainstage Season and an award of $2000. The runner-up receives a 29-hour staged reading and $750. The two other finalists will be awarded $500.

Premiere Stages is committed to supporting a diverse group of writers; playwrights of all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in scripts that explore or address contemporary issues and tackle topics that challenge and connect with our audience. Agent/Theatre Professional Submissions

Premiere Stages will accept full scripts from literary agents or theatre professionals affiliated with Premiere Stages. All other writers are required to submit a 10-page script sample and synopsis.

● Plays must be full-length and have a cast size of no more than eight.

● Plays submitted must be unpublished and must be works that have not been previously produced (readings, workshops, and showcases are okay).

● Plays must be written by playwrights who have strong affiliations with the greater metropolitan area  (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania).

● Musical submissions, adaptations, and solo shows will not be considered at this time.

● Submissions are limited to one script per playwright.

● Playwrights must be available to be on-site at Premiere for the development of their script (see Play Festival schedule on following page).

● Submissions are due by 11:59pm on January 1, 2017. All plays must be submitted electronically, attached as a PDF. Hard copies will not be accepted. Non-agent submissions

Playwrights submitting without an agent/theatre professional must include:

● A brief synopsis of the play (no more than half a page).

● A character breakdown.

● A history of the play’s development (if any) and a brief statement of your goals for development.

● The playwright’s bio or resume.

● A script sample from the play (no more than 10 pages).

Plays and synopses will be evaluated by a panel of arts professionals. The panel will submit their recommendations to the Producing Artistic Director and Literary staff. The panel will request full scripts from synopses of interest.

Little Festival of the Unexpected 2016

Submissions for the upcoming Little Festival of the Unexpected are accepted September 1st through December 31st for consideration the following May. Only scripts and samples of full-length plays are considered for the Festival.
  • Literary agents may submit complete scripts on behalf of their clients.
  • Playwrights who do not have agents may submit 10-page dialogue samples for consideration. Dialogue samples must be accompanied by a synopsis, production history and character breakdown.
  • Plays are eligible for development at the Little Festival of the Unexpected only if they have not previously been professionally produced or workshopped with Equity actors. This restriction includes Actors Equity showcase and waiver productions. Plays that have had readings or non-AEA productions are still eligible.
Only one submission is accepted per playwright in a given year.
Submissions of 10-page samples (from playwrights) must be sent by U.S. Mail only – no e-mails, faxes, etc.
Portland Stage rarely produces scripts with more than 8 characters. When doubling occurs, a full character track breakdown should be included.

Metropolitan Playhouse, New York's OBIE Award-winning explorer of America's Theatrical Heritage, is currently accepting submissions for new plays inspired by the life and history of New York's Lower East Side. 
 
Submissions will be evaluated by Metropolitan's artistic staff, and we will produce up to 10 of the submitted plays in April 2017, as part of our 8th Annual East Village Theater Festival.

Subject - Very Important:

Plays MUST pertain specifically, though not necessarily exclusively, to the East Village and Lower East Side of Manhattan. Please DO NOT submit plays that do not conform to this simple guideline. We are eager not to waste your--and our--time. Plays that do not in some way illuminate life and/or conditions in that neighborhood--past, present or future--will not be considered. The subject or theme may well pertain to other places as well, but they must be quite specifically applicable to the East Village/Lower East Side.

As a secondary consideration, and as in prior years, preference will be given to plays that pertain to a chosen theme. For Volume 13, the theme is Prosperity as it relates to life in the East Village of today and in eras past. (See below for more information.)

The Festival
East Village Chronicles, Vol. 13 is the 13th seasonal festival of new, one-act plays that celebrate and explore the varied history and eclectic culture that have defined Manhattan's Lower East Side (in all its permutations). Combined into two, distinct evenings of short plays, which run on alternating nights over three weeks, the presentations will include a variety of styles and tones, unified by their being clearly related to life in the theater's neighborhood.

Metropolitan Playhouse will produce the plays on our 3/4 thrust stage in our 51 seat theater at 220 E 4th Street.

The plays will be directed by directors engaged by Metropolitan to coordinate and rehearse the entire festival.

The plays will be performed by a core company of actors, cast specifically for the festival, each of whom will perform in at least two festival plays. The cast of any given play will be drawn from this core company, and therefore anyone cast must be suitable for more than one play. Because we are forming a company, while playwrights' input is highly desired, final decisions remain with Metropolitan's artistic staff.

The Theme for 2017: Prosperity

The Chronicles plays have been connected each year in that they have focused on a certain topic, theme, or timeline. Selecting plays that are inspired by some such organizing principle helps to give the festival shape and to enrich the experience for audience members. (See * below for further discussion of the theme idea.)

This year, the Chronicles will be devoted to Prosperity. We believe this theme is especially resonant within the context of our national conversation and the particular history and character of the neighborhood. In our neighborhood, with its history of promise to newly immigrated Americans, its long defiance of the conventions of mainstream lifestyles, and its current rapid rise in real estate values, what it is to prosper has meant many different things over the decades.

Playwrights are encouraged to respond directly, indirectly, and creatively to this idea; how a play relates to the notion of "Prosperity" is up to the playwright. 
 
Technical Guidelines
We are seeking plays of no more than 30 minutes that can be played by 5 or fewer actors.
The plays will be presented with at least three others in a given evening, and as a consequence, should not require elaborate set or properties.

Samuel French: Playwrights welcome


Playwrights Welcome, developed for the Dramatists Guild of America members, is a national ticketing initiative created by Samuel French along with Dramatists Play Service, Dramatic Publishing, Music Theatre International, Playscripts and Rodgers and Hammerstein. This program was made out of a desire to support the artistic health of our industry's writers, and by extension the vibrancy of the American theatre.

We’re aware that attending theatre is an integral part to how writers learn their craft and grows as artists. However, it can often be costly for writers to do that simple act. Playwrights Welcome is designed to offer available tickets to professional playwrights on the day of a performance, free of charge. These available tickets are ones that would otherwise go unsold; we firmly believe that no theater should give away a ticket that could otherwise be sold. To learn more about how your theater can get involved, or how you as a playwright can take advantage of this Dramatists Guild benefit, see below.

How It Works
Theaters may sign up to participate in Playwrights Welcome by filling out this form. Our Program Manager will be in touch with next steps. Once registered, theaters will receive a welcome packet, complete with language to use in marketing and promotion, a logo pack, and a window cling to display in your box office window.

We will advertise the program to playwrights, but we encourage you to promote Playwrights Welcome to your community by displaying the window cling in your box office. We also recommend featuring the Playwrights Welcome program on your website or in printed materials with your ticket policies.

Eligible playwrights will call or visit your box office for day-of tickets - or through a reservation system designed by your theater. Every box office works differently, and we know that you may not be able to offer day-of tickets, so managing reservations for this program is at your discretion. Our only requirement is that playwrights present their Dramatists Guild card to claim their ticket. We are always seeking new full-length scripts that have never had a full production produced in New York City. Please send a cover letter, resume and a .pdf or .doc file of your script to submissions@horsetrade.info. You may submit multiple scripts, though we encourage you to submit your best pieces first and foremost. Please note we accept all new scripts on a rolling basis, we can not guarentee a timely response. We are alway working to better our new material intake rate, but contrary to popular opinion, theater is not dead and we have a lot to look thru.

We are also looking for new Monthly programming ideas. We currently have over a dozen monthly shows. See our front page listings under House Shows, for the kind of monthly shows currently running. If you have an idea for something that might work please email office@horseTRADE.info.

We are always looking to diversify our programming, so if you see a kind of show, a target audience, a performer pool, a POV or anything else that is under represented in our existing shows or season, then quite simply, it will make us more interested.

Rose Desena and Peggy Howard Chane run a monthly show in the Theater space below the bar at Lucky Jacks on Orchard St. We are looking for original writing of short stories, plays and or essays that are no longer then 5 – 10 min. Please see the rules below. 

We like funny, romantic, enduring or Political (we like those). There is no fee to submit. Our show is March 7th at Dixon Place. It is a very nice event that is well advertised. If you are a writer trained in acting you are welcome to participate providing our director approves. We are always willing to take suggestions for actors you might like to use. There will be at least one night of rehearsals that you should attend. There is no payment to the writer.

The Robert Chesley/Victor Bumbalo Foundation residency

The Robert Chesley/Victor Bumbalo Foundation supports playwrights of Gay and Lesbian theatre.

Established in 1993 by Victor Bumbalo in playwright Robert Chesley’s honor, The Robert Chesley/Victor Bumbalo Foundation seeks to advance gay and lesbian theatre by honoring writers whose work is making a substantial contribution to our culture.

In 2009 the Board of Directors elected to form a partnership with the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation to provide residencies at the artists’ colony in Taos, New Mexico.

The Wurlitzer Foundation and the Chesley/Bumbalo Foundation will select the awardees. The Chesley/Bumbalo Foundation will underwrite the residency expenses and, in addition, will provide a stipend to the awardee.

The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico provides residency grants to people who specialize in the creative arts. The foundation accepts applications from and offers residency grants to painters, poets, sculptors, writers, playwrights, screenwriters, composers, photographers and filmmakers, of national and international origin.

The Foundation, with support from The Caruso Family Foundation, also provides academic scholarships to Taos High School seniors pursuing degrees in the creative arts.

HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP)

HARP is designed to support collaboration across disparate art forms by nurturing hybrid artists in the development of dynamic live performances. HARP provides significant long-term artistic, financial, and administrative support, tailored to each artist's individual needs.

Please note: This year's artist selection is focused specifically on dance and puppetry-led works - meaning these genres are primary drivers of the proposed project. Music or theatrical works which integrate these genres will also be considered, but only if one or more of the lead artists have a history of working in these specific genres.

HARP RESIDENCY EXPECTATIONS:

Artists or collaborative teams chosen for HARP are expected to participate in the program by developing the work as outlined in their application and by actively participating in the member and public activities associated with the program. Since HARP is designed to respond to the ideas and needs of its members, the members themselves must be proactive in bringing those ideas and needs to HARP and to each other. We expect our members to be both good citizens of the HERE community as well as ambassadors to the public.

During the residency, HARP Artists participate in monthly artistic meetings, bi-monthly work groups focused on both artistic and business topics, regular individual meetings on budgeting, production, and fundraising issues, and formal and informal work-in-progress showings.

At the monthly meetings, artists show work, give feedback to other artist projects, engage in and contribute to artistic skill sharing. At the bi-monthly work groups, artists share career skills and learn from others, as well as from HERE staff and outside experts on topics ranging from grant writing to touring to budgeting to work samples.

Artists are also encouraged to show work in each stage of development. A number of work-in-progress showings, both public and private, allow members of HARP to contribute to the growth of their peers. Through this component, we create a balance of practical and theoretical work that exposes the whole group to a comprehensive experience. Each season, we present 8-10 public showings of HARP works-in-progress and provide HARP artists with a more formal opportunity to present stages of their work in CULTUREMART, our annual winter festival of workshop productions, before a public paying audience.

Each year, HARP artists participate in a one-week retreat at an artist colony where they are able to dedicate all of their energy to the creative process without the distractions of daily life. At times, when possible, we offer one- and two-week project-specific intensive retreats for second- and third-year HARP artists.

Three to five projects that are in development are selected for production each year. Each selected artist participates in all development activities, and collaborates with HERE to raise funds and develop appropriate resources and support for their production. Projects are produced at the scale appropriate to the work – there is no set formula for producing in the season – chamber or mainstage, four performances or 20, one performer or 25. It is our expectation that the works being developed in the program are being scaled to fit and will be produced in one of our spaces. Most works developed through HARP are fully produced by HERE.

The artists themselves shall retain ownership of all work initiated, developed, or workshopped during their residency. For the works that go to full production, HERE and the artists will negotiate a separate ownership and rights agreement. However, in all public materials about the artist or team the following must appear: "(Name of Artist or Team) was/is a member of HERE’s Artist Residency Program (HARP), 20 __ - 20__, NYC", and in all public materials relating to the work’s development, the following line shall appear: “Development of (Name of Work) was made possible through the HERE’s Artist Residency Program (HARP), 20_ - 20_, NYC." For works that go to full production the following line shall appear: “(Name of Work) was commissioned, developed, and produced through the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP), 20_ - 20_, NYC.”



RESOURCES FOR HARP ARTISTS:

Artistic Development:

While in residence, the artist or team’s residency is linked to a specific project in development and an exploration of ideas and processes intrinsic to their artistic growth. HERE believes that artists must be in control of the work that they create. This control goes hand in hand with a responsibility to participate in all phases of their artistic projects from inception through all development stages to full production. HARP is designed to respond to the ideas and needs of its artists. The artists themselves must be proactive in bringing those ideas and needs to HARP and to each other; they shape workshop and discussion offerings, create performances, and work with HERE staff to publicize and promote HARP events.

Career Development:
HARP also includes hands-on administrative sessions to supplement our already strong artistic development process. We believe that in order for these artists to stay in the field, they must have the necessary skills to function as viable creative enterprises. HARP offers advice on business issues such as grant writing, project planning, budgeting, marketing, and nonprofit incorporation. Administrative sessions are led either by a HARP artist with the necessary skill, an appropriate HERE staff member, or an outside expert.

HARP artists also have access to an online resource managed by HERE that fosters these skills and asks the artists to participate in an online community discussion by posting work and responding to others’ work between meetings and presentations. Most important, frequent meetings provide community and address the needs of the whole artist. In addition, each member of the HERE staff dedicates significant one-on-one time with each artist to articulate the vision for the project in terms of producing strategy, audience development, marketing, fundraising, finance and production.

Facilities and Equipment:
HARP Artists have access to the HERE staff, including development, marketing, and general management team, and access to sample contracts, grants, and budget templates. Due to the lack of on-site rehearsal space and the heavy use of our theatre spaces, HARP is not primarily a space residency. However, HERE offers resident artists limited rehearsal space and equipment on an as-needed, as-available basis in our theatres. The Mainstage Theatre is a flexible black box theatre with a sprung wood floor which measures 46' x 46'. It can seat up to 150 (depending on the configuration of the seating platforms), and usually seats 99. The theatre has a complete lighting package including 92 dimmers and a complete sound system. The Dorothy B. Williams Theatre is a charming proscenium-style theatre with a 14' x 38' stage. The theatre also has the capability to transform into a flexible black box space. It has a fixed grid, a state-of-the-art lighting package including 75 dimmers and a complete sound system. The theatre has 63 seats and 8 stools. HERE has an extensive inventory of high quality equipment available for our artists’ use. HERE also actively develops partnerships with other organizations and landlords to offer dedicated rehearsal space to our resident artists.

Funding:
In addition to the extensive range of community, development, and production resources listed above, HERE offers each resident artist a developmental commission, work-in-progress (WIP) and workshop fees in order to develop their project. The developmental commission, paid out in monthly installments, is up to $5,400 total for a 3-year residency. HERE also provides each artist with an annual WIP fund of $1,000, as well as a fee of $1,000-$2,000 for each workshop in our annual CULTUREMART festival. All of these funds may be used as each artist deems fit for their individual project. In addition, there are fees for creators and their collaborators in the budget for the final production. The budget is developed jointly by HERE and the artist. HERE allocates at least $20,000 towards the final production in addition to partnering with the artist to raise project-specific funding. Over a 3-year residency, HERE invests over $35,000 in cash in each project.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
HARP is designed to assist mid-career individual artists or collaborative teams (writers, performers, composers, directors, designers, dramaturgs, puppeteers, dancers, singers) working in a hybrid form in live performance. Hybrid form refers to the full integration (not just as backdrop) of two or more genres (theatre, dance, music, puppetry, media, and visual art) in the work.

This year's artist selection is focused specifically on dance and puppetry-led works - meaning these genres are primary drivers of the proposed project. Music or theatrical works which integrate these genres will also be considered, but only if one or more of the lead artists have a history of working in these specific genres.

We define a mid-career artist as one who has:

(1) completed their education within the last 8-15 years

(2) had at least a few significant residency or commissioning opportunities,

(3) created a body of work over at least 5 years and at least one full evening-length work, and

(4) earns some income from their art practice.

Artists must also meet the following criteria:

*The artist or team are residents of the NY metro area.

*The artist or team find themselves at a point in their career where they are developing a distinctive form/style/content of work, or are interested in stretching the previously accepted boundaries of their work by experimentation with form/style/content.

*The artist or team is interested in actively participating both in the community of HERE and in a peer-based program aimed at exchanging resources, ideas, critique, and support.

*The artist or team are proposing a project that is very early in its development process, meaning at its inception and has not been previously workshopped, and any underlying rights for pre-existing material for the project have already been secured.

Additionally, HERE believes that diversity is extremely important within the makeup of our residency program. HARP actively seeks this diversity both from the work itself in terms of genre and content, and in the background of the artists.

The selection panel includes HERE leadership, artists, and performing arts curators from NYC.

Austin Playhouse Festival of New American Plays

Full-length scripts are currently being accepted through December 15, 2016. Three to four scripts will be selected and announced to the public on March 1, 2017. Professional directors and performers will be assigned to the selected scripts for a rehearsal period culminating in a series of public staged readings from May 5 – 7, 2017.

Festival playwrights will be awarded a $500 prize.
  • Plays must be submitted in PDF form by December 15. 
  • Plays must be full-length with a running time of at least an hour. 
  • Plays must be submitted in an acceptable script format and written primarily in English.

Undiscovered Countries seeking short sci-fi plays

Undiscovered Countries is now accepting three to fifteen minute submissions for our January 16th show at BIZARRE Bushwick, which is Sci Fi themed!

We're particularly soliciting work in non-dystopian sci-fi - we're interested in alternate narratives from the nihilist, humorless, shoot-em-ups that frequently get pushed as the dominant sci-fi stories.

Emotional depth and even darker emotions are encouraged, but work coming from a place of (even shaky) hope about the future and love and empathy for the characters is preferred.

Glittery, feminist, brown, weird, beautiful, funny, sad, queer, non-humanoid, hopeful - go wild!

PL.A.Y Noir: One Act Play Festival

Punk Monkey Productions is now accepting submissions for their sixth annual PL.A.Y Noir one-act play festival. One-acts should range ideally range between 10 to 20 pages in length with a Film Noir theme (think private detectives, femme fatales, unscrupulous villains, etc.). For a frame of reference, please look at movies like The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, and The Third Man. Entries can range from dramas to comedies, and from period to contemporary, as long as they fall under the umbrella of noir.

Selected pieces will receive a four week run (twelve performances) in the fall of 2017 at The Actor’s Workout Studio in the North Hollywood Arts District, as well as, non-exclusive publication in a collection of the selected plays performed that year. For more details, click

10-10 FESTIVAL SCRIPT SUBMISSION

The play selection team is now accepting script submissions for consideration! If your submission is chosen, your play will be performed in July 2017 at CVLT’s River Street Playhouse. This “black box” environment which seats approximately 65 patrons. Playwrights whose scripts are chosen will be contacted early in 2017.
  • Plays must be received by no later than February 28, 2017. 
  • You must be 18 years or older to submit a script.
  • Scripts must be complete. Scenes from a full-length production or from other works cannot be accepted.
  • Your show should have an estimated production “running time” of 10-12 minutes.
  • Your script must be original – CVLT will not accept responsibility for copyright violations.
  • CVLT reserves the right to choose directors for each play. You may not direct your own production.
  • While the primary mission of The 10-10 is to introduce works that have not been read or produced in public, we are accepting previously produced/read scripts for consideration.
  • You may submit multiple plays. We ask that you submit only your best scripts and keep the number of submissions to a reasonable amount.
  • CVLT cannot compensate you for your submission, nor will you receive compensation if your script is chosen for production. Our actors and staff are volunteers. All proceeds from the production go to actual production costs and facility upkeep.
  • CVLT will not produce, release, or distribute your work without permission.

Celtic Calling 2017 Playwriting Contest

The 2016 Celtic Calling Playwriting Contest was won by Huntington’s ‘Murder and Merriment,' who performed ‘An Irish Wake’ at the Copper Pint Pub during the inaugural festival.

It went so well, we’ve decided to do it again!

Calling all playwrights, storytellers, bards, jesters, minstrels and other like-minded folk!

Celtic Calling, is now accepting proposals for production of original plays, vignettes, or one-acts, not to exceed one hour, with a ‘Celtic’ theme, to be performed during the weekend of the Second Annual Celtic Calling, March 3-5, 2017, at a location to be determined. The deadline for submission is December 31, 2016, and the winning submission will be announced no later than January 15, 2017. One or more winning entries may be selected and will be given a $100 stipend.

1.All proposals and scripts must be typewritten and emailed to CelticCallingCopperPintPlay@gmail.com by December 31, 2016, at 5:00pm.
2. Multiple submissions are permitted, as are collaborations between writers.
3. The submission must be original, and the entrant must have the rights of performance prior to submission. Celtic Calling will be granted exclusive rights of performance from the time of submission through March 31, 2016.
4. The play should not exceed one hour.
7. Celtic Calling may charge for tickets to the performance, which will go to offset the costs of production of the play and/or festival.
8. The submission must have a ‘Celtic’ theme.
9.The play will be selected by a committee, whose decisions are final, including the decision not to decide, should the entries not meet the requirements or other standards.

Desde el Puente 2nd Annual One Act Play Festival

Calling all Latinx Playwrights for submitting works to Desde El Puente, the 2nd annual production of Raíces Theatre Company’s one act play festival. Desde El Puente honors the memory of Rafael Pérez, a leader in Western New York’s Latino community, and recognizes the bridge that needs to be crossed for Latino works to be celebrated by the wider world. Ten plays will be chosen for a 3 weekend run starting May 26th, 2017 and closing June 11th, 2017 in Buffalo, NY.

Please read our submissions guidelines carefully. Submissions that do not follow our guidelines will not be considered.

Playwrights: May submit a maximum of 2 one act plays, each no longer than 10 minutes. If you find yourselves with more than 10 pages on hand, please read it aloud and time it. All plays must have a cast no larger than 6 characters and minimal set requirements as there is no time for elaborate set changes. All plays must deal with subject matter that relates to the Latino culture. If selected your play will be cast, produced and directed by Raíces Theatre Company. All selected plays will run every night. Selected plays will receive a $20 royalty.

Vermont Pride Theater at Chandler seeks full-length plays


Vermont Pride Theater at Chandler (VPT) requests submissions for its seventh annual summer festival in July in the historic Chandler Center for the Arts, Randolph (VT).

We are seeking full-length scripts that present the issues and concerns of today's LGBTQ populations, especially in rural areas. In addition to new plays, plays that have been previously produced or published are welcome and their performance history would be of interest. Evergreen Museum & Library Artist-in-Residency Program

House Guests is an artists-in-residence and exhibition program that celebrates the history of the Garrett family, collectors and patrons of the arts, who hosted artists and musicians at their Evergreen estate during the first half of the 20th century. Every year Evergreen opens its doors to an artist and invites them to use the collections, the architecture and the grounds to practice in place. House Guests offers the public new ways to see and understand this historic place through the work of contemporary artists.

The House Guests Artist-in-Residence program provides housing, individual studio, and a stipend, allowing the artist the time and space to produce new work in a visually and culturally rich setting. One residency is awarded every year.

For a $595 fee, you get a 2 hour tech/dress in the theatre (nights), and TWO performances, (nights and weekends) and YOU GET ALL OF THE TICKET SALES! So if you have a free space to rehearse, a good team, and friends and family that can fill the house, you can actually make money putting up your play. (And more performances are available for additional fees.)

You also received free ticketing service, a webpage for your show, a venue manager, reduced rate rehearsal rental space in the theatre if you want, and a brand new beautiful, clean, theatre on West 45th St to present your work.

Act One: One Act Festival January 9th - 28th

The Act One: One Act Festival 2017 is now accepting submissions for the 2017 festival. 

Deadline for submissions is December 9th and acceptances will be awarded from now until December 12th, i.e.: We will be reading plays as they come in and notifying before the deadline passes. Early submission advised.

The Act One: One Act Festival 2017 is a self-producing competition style one-act play festival. The plays are divided into three different programs. Each program will run six times with four of those performances being evening performances. The Audience will vote for best plays so if all of your friends come you will be sure to make the finals!

The top six nominated plays will compete on January 28th at 7:30pm for Best Actor, Best Actress, Director and Best Play. Best Actor wins $50, Actress $50, Director $50 and Best Play $100. We also intend to invite the finalists to have their play published in a short play anthology. This would be a non-exclusive deal, which doesn’t prevent the author from pursuing a deal with Samuel French for example and is not mandatory.

All types of short play are considered, but please remember to keep the staging simple with minimal set and props. We will be using the theatres standard lighting plot and will provide you with a light and soundboard operator. In addition we will offer free 2-hour rehearsal space to each show from Jan. 3rd - 13th, which is subject to availability and on a first come first served.

We are ideally looking for plays that are 10 – 20 minutes in length.

The Act One: One Act Festival 2017 plans to run a rotating schedule of performances beginning Thursday, Jan. 12th through Saturday Jan. 28th. Each Play is responsible for providing their Director and Actors for their production.

Break a leg! Equity Showcases permitted but acts will obtain their own code; The Secret Theatre will provide Equity compliant Insurance to the productions.
